How do YOU define an ebike?

the internet can’t seem to come to a consensus on the true definition of “ebike”

i come from a background of mountain biking, so I am very familiar with the discourse on this topic and that has also framed my opinions on this

my own personal definition of an ebike is

“a bicycle integrated with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery that assists with propulsion”

the key word there is “assists”
if you have to pedal your bike in order for the motor to give you any assistance, that’s an ebike.
if you have a throttle so that you don’t have to put in any effort at all then i now consider that something else. what that is, i don’t know.

I’m curious what the redditors of this sub consider an ebike. how would you define it in your own words?

E-bike recommendations

Hello everyone,
I’m in the market for an e-bike with a budget of around $1,100. I’m looking for something that can go over 30 mph and has a decent range. I’m 6ft tall and weight about 195 pounds.
I want the Toyota Camry of e-bikes 😂 Something reliable, well-built, and durable that will last me for years without giving me a bunch of problems.
E-moped recommendations too
What would you guys recommend?

What do you wish you knew before upgrading your electric dirt bike?

One thing worth thinking about before upgrading an electric dirt bike is whether the part actually fits your setup and how it will affect the overall ride.
It can be tempting to focus on power upgrades, but things like brake condition, suspension, battery compatibility, and the availability of replacement parts matter too. A cheaper component isn't necessarily a better deal if it doesn't fit properly or is difficult to replace later..
I'm part of a team working with a Sur-Ron bikes and parts store, so this is a topic we pay attention to. I'm interested in hearing from riders who have modified their bikes: which upgrade made the biggest difference for you, and which one would you skip if you were starting over?

Bike repair question e-bike wheel doesn’t turn but motor does

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

long story short, i replaced the controller on my e-bike and rewired what i needed to. now the wheel is not exactly spinning. it did the same as in the video when i wired it exactly but i reversed the polarity of the motor to change its direction (swapped hall sensor wires corresponding to the reversal) and it still doesn’t work although.

you can hear a clang when i hit the throttle again in the video. when the polarity of the motor was normal, it spun faster than the video (which shows a swapped polarity)

things i’ve done:
-swap polarity
-check for stripped planetary gears
-swap hall sensors

could someone help me out? i need the bike tomorrow so it would be best if i could hear out something soon thank you!

motor is a bafang 48v 500w rmg06 i believe

Goat Power Bikes in SoCal

I’d like to hear from people who have one of the Goat Power Bikes (or a similar high-power bike with pedals) in southern California about whether they are having issues getting pulled over, bike confiscated etc. I’m strongly considering getting a King Goat bike for riding in San Diego county and want to know if I’d be just destined to have it impounded in the first month, even riding under 20mph and pedaling on public streets.

“Why not just get an actual 20mph, 750w class 2 e-bike and not worry about it?” I have one and it’s nice, but there are some steep dirt trails around my house that I can use as shortcuts and the class 2 doesn’t cut it on some of them.

Bike purchase question What's a reasonable price for an entry-level eMTB?

Not talking about some fancy $5k+ carbon eMTB. Just something decent for someone who's getting into trail riding.

What would you actually be willing to spend?

363 votes, 2d left
Under $1,000
$1,500–$1,999
$2,000–$2,499
$1,000–$1,499
$2,500+
I'd rather buy a used one

What is an off brand, or foreign (say Chinese) ebike that has always interested you?

Let's not get going to get into local laws, bike regulations or "that's an emoto" arguments. Let's all pretend we live in a place without ebike laws where we all just like to cruise.

For this post only if it has pedals it's an ebike, regardless of the body, wattage, motor, etc. And no laws exist, the roads are all soft and everyone is always safe.

So what's a make and model that's caught your eye but you've never went ahead with? What's the reason?

I have an ebike which is great on throttle but sadly I live too far it kills the battery until I can get my new bike I must ride pedal assist and let me tell you my ankles are dead at the end of the day and are in so much pain but I have to push through.

Anything besides insoles advil I can do to help rest my feet? I work in maintenance so my main thing is working all day with no people around. I wouldn't trade this job for anything. I love fixing stuff.

Using my electric scooter for 2 years and now switching a month ago to Ebike...

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello, I just wanto to share something different. And yeah, its been a month since I switched from an electric scooter to an ebike. and so far, I am so happy with it. , I used my electric scooter for my daily commute for about 2 years. You know what, it was fun, very easy to use, and perfect for my short trips. It doen'st mean I don't like it, I still like it and have a lot of good memories riding on it. My problem was that in terms of carrying the things. If I want to have groceries or wanted to buy something much heavy, it was difficult. Even bringing home a case of beer felt like a challenge for me.. so Last month, I decide to moved to a new place and it was a good time to try an ebike. I got a Tesway X5, and it has been great for both commuting and grocery runs. The biggest difference for me is; it is very stable. In rough roads also, it doesn't bother me as much, and riding uphill is easier than it was on my scooter. Another thing I like is that; if ever the battery runs out, I can still pedal going home. even though it doesn't happened yet, but it's nice to know that I have the nice option. Now, whenever I want to have my groceries or want to pick up a case of beer, I don't have to think if I will buy or not because carrying it home is very easy.. I just ride on my bike and go. I still think electric scooters are great, especially for short city trips. But for my current lifestyle, an ebike has been a much better fit. Has anyone here also like me, else switched from a scooter to an ebike? I'd love to hear your experience.

26x4 Fat Tire Recommendations

Finally time to replace my stock tires after about 2700 miles. I was going to get the ones everyone recommends the ultraverse brand ones. But they say there are heavier tires. Will they slow me down or make my battery range less? If they do does anyone have any other tires they recommend that are not so heavy. I am looking for more street tires then off road ones, mainly on pavement city riding.

E-Bike Bluetooth Speakers

I typically never where headphones or listen to music when driving my e-bike. I ride all over Las Vegas roads. Does anyone recommend a handlebar-mount bluetooth speaker? I am trying to not carry a portable speaker in my basket. My budget is less than $100 for this.

Bike purchase question Anyone use a folding ebike for beach trips?

Hey all! We're in SoCal and take the kids surfing most weekends. My husband and the kids can spend hours in the water, so I've been thinking about bringing an ebike to ride along the coast while they surf.

I've been looking at the mars 3.0 mostly because it folds, but our SUV is already pretty full with all the surfboards, a cooler, and the rest of our beach stuff. Not really sure how much room it saves when folded or how much of a pain it'd be to get in and out of the car by myself.

Anyone tried fitting a folding ebike in an SUV with all their ohter gear? Would love some advice before I buy one and regret it.

Fiido X pulling/resistance sensation

Hello,

I have issues with my fiido X. While riding, I can feel from time to time as if the support is shutting off - there's sudden temporary resistance or pull back. This happens mostly at low speeds, just after starting riding, so it is not connected to reaching the support limit over 25 km/h.

Has this happened to anybody and was it fixed?

I dont even know how to document this for the company, I tried recording it but it doesn't show on a video.

Bike purchase question 29 inch ebike vs 26 inch fat tire ebike?

Considering either a Duotts C29 or F26 Lite.

I was first looking at the Duotts C29 for commuting, as I already have a mtb and know it's comfortable to ride, however I saw the F26 Lite and I really want to try it.

The F26 Lite looks like it is fun to ride on gravel trails, however I don't know it compares to the C29 for commuting, and if the 4 inch fat tires are a gimmick I will become tired of for commuting.

I read that 29 inch 2 inch wide tires are better and more efficient for paved long distance commuting, and was wondering how the 26 inch 4 inch fat tires compare.

Bike build question Is it worth converting Retrospec Harper 7?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've had this bike for a few years and it's been great. I'm hoping to use it more for commuting, which involves some pretty substantial hills. Anyone have experience converting a Harper 7? Worth it, or would it be more worthwhile to just invest in a purpose-built e-bike?

Has anyone actually replaced most of their car trips with an e-bike?

I’ve been thinking about how useful an e-bike could be for everyday trips. Things like going to the grocery store, commuting to work, or running errands seem like they could be much easier without dealing with traffic and parking.

For those who use an e-bike regularly, has it actually replaced your car for most short trips? What still makes you reach for the car instead?

Ive done a ton of research and still can't 100% decide. I'm leaning more towards the Monarc. Do any of you have some good, bad, ugly stories to share about either or?

Bike pics My honest review for the Tesway X7 dual motor, pedal assist ebike.

(Cons and pros at the bottom)

I'm not quite where to start with this, but let me give you some context and to why I purchase this HEAVY ass ebike (because context is important). Awhile ago I made some posts here and elsewhere asking for the best ebike given my current situation, I had a 500w 48v ebike (goes 20mph) that was doing poorly most of the time and that is because I live in Wyoming where the wind is horrible and the area I live in has some decent ass hills to climb. Pair that with the wind and you're going to get knocked over a few times and drain your battery. Anyways you probably already know what I'm getting at here and if you've been to Wyoming you very well know why there's semi trucks turned sideways and flipped over along the highway.. okay I think I made my point clear.

After speaking with some of you here and watching videos on YouTube I needed something with a big battery (50 amp hours+) I didn't care about the speed as I'm not like all these dumb kids and their surrons.. I still wanted a bike with functional pedals, dual motors (to get up the hills easier), and something that didn't look like a surron. I wanted a bike that would be good for putting weight on the back and to travel with. 3 people suggested I look into the Tesway and so I did, bought it off Amazon from the company directly there. Bike came via FedEx and it came in good condition. Cons to the delivery was putting it together, it was extremely heavy and I had to get help just to put the front wheel on lol.

Overall Cons and pros-

[CONS]

(1.) Because the bike is low pedaling around curves and/or if the ground is high in some parts caused my pedals to scrape the surface of the ground. This could be extremely dangerous if your pedals get stuck hitting the ground. Going in a straight line is fine and little curves, but around sharp corners I just let on the throttle a little.

(2.) Rear motor on only is extremely slow and takes at least 20-25 seconds just to get up to 28mph.

(2.)cheap tires expect flats, just like most ebikes you get they came with cheap tires. I installed tannus armor inserts in both + sealant and pulled out at least 30 goatheads with no issue at all.

(3.) As I showed in my picture above the speed limit [64] is false, perhaps it's just a place holder letting you know the speed limit is unlocked? I'm able to hit 44mph on it and that is also according to my phone speedometer... definitely not 64 lol.

(4.) 200 mile range claim is not technically possible. I have done several range tests on this bike and got only about 132 miles on pedal assist 2 (single motor) I have yet to try level 1, but by the time I finish that I'll have to be thrown in the nut house because the 132 mile test really tested my patience and sanity 🤪.

(5.) Motors cut out and bike temporarily shuts off for at least 30 seconds (can be fixed by turning it off then on), why this happened- I was going up a really steep mountain (Teton Pass Wy) it made it halfway then shut off. But let's be honest, I'm really crazy for even trying that.

(6.) Battery mount rail will become loose going over potholes and even mild bumps, make sure it's tightened at least once a month!

(7.) Break levers (at least in my case) require pumping a few times to work better. Best way to describe it is my levers go all the way in which isn't good, but if I squeeze or pump them a few times they go all the way out (not entirely sure why, but has not been an issue as the stopping power is great)

(8.) Bike is heavy.. that is all I have to say.

The bike has issues, but if you have a brain you can fix a lot of them at home with just some tools. Customer support is semi horrible at getting back with you, but at least they didn't ghost me.

[Pros]

(1.) Bike does well in the wind last week we saw wind gusts of 55mph+ in my city, bike preformed well against it going 25-30mph, dual motors. Battery did not drain that much and lasted 6 days at 47miles before plugging in. (This was on windy day's) to my job and back.

(2.) Dual motors take off speed is instant and can be dangerous if you dont know what you're doing, dual motors +level 5 got me up to 40mph within 10 seconds a little less even. I normally go 20-25mph but if it's windy I have to really be in dual motors.

(3.) Back suspension spring coils have been a tremendous help because I live in pothole city and uneven terrain. Suspension in the front forks are decent.

(4.) Bike speedometer is accurate at least on mine, I saw a lot of reviews of this bike from YouTube and it seems they have changed the display and made a few changes from what I noticed. So there's that.

Conclusion: I don't really have much to say about the bike not in a bad way, but because I got it for two reasons. The distance and something to benefit me more given where I live. I'm not going to glaze over it as I mentioned the cons it had and false claim, but it definitely is a step up for me and I like it.

Oh yeah police don't bother me, they only go after the surrons and the one's with fake pedals wheeling up and down the street. I had one cop ask me if I can do wheelies on this bike lol it's impossible hahhaha
