Speaking as someone that actually went to an art college and understands the mindset of many types of "artists", these kinds of performative displays are done by people who would rather do this than actually be productive and produce something people actually want or need. They get to pretend they're intellectual and cultured, and the people watching get to pretend along with them.

Sometimes it goes back multiple generations if they’re smart with the trust fund and don’t depend on just the fund to live off of…. unlike this artist

Long standing joke in art school is how an artist needs two things to be successful: inspiration and a trust fund.

I went to college with one of these guys. Walked around campus in a bathrobe all day, made art out of wind blowing into plastic bags from fans, had parents who were rich af.

My now ex took me to an experimental opera and got mad at me for laughing while I watched a grown woman fully submerge her face in a bowl of water and blow bubbles for almost 2 minutes. We got into a fight afterwards and broke up the next day.

True performance art should allow the evocation of any emotion the viewer experiences, that’s the point because art is supposed to be subjective. So your expression of laughing at that bullshit is valid lmao.
3
u/papayakob 17h ago
Literally my entire argument. Art is subjective. Also a grown woman sticking her head in a bowl of water blowing bubbles is objectively funny

feels like "look at me look at me" rather than constructing or creating a work of art like a dance or something sturdy for the people appreciate and study. this feels like therapy for the girl smothered in gel. she needs everybody to pay attention to her.

Yes or some sort of deluded sense of “this is something good for the world”.

I got a degree in art and as someone who didn't use any drugs all throughout college, it was a challenge to relate to this kind of behavior! I think you have to honestly be in an altered state of mind to pretend this has any real meaning or relevance. And honestly I've seen even worse, more boring displays. I'm sad to say.

nah i disagree. You can learn a lot watching the audience of a person playing in fake jazz all over the floor in their sleepwear. Look at the smirking dads, watch the mom that uncrosses her legs and then poses with anticipation of some weird fantasy and gratification. They sit there all in different shades of reality looking at what some see as nonsense. Most of what people do is nonsense and you see another person that apparently can excel in it. I really wondered, "hmm, I wonder how this video went down at the family holiday gathering" quite a ghastly bunch of facial expressions being suppressed as much as possible?
17
u/Inevitable-Copy3619 1d ago
As a musician (a type of artist) I get self expression and all that. I also get avante garde and more off beat styles.
But this just feels like a no talent ass clown trying to be a somebody. It’s neither providing enjoyment for the viewer nor providing expression for the artist.

This particular "art" seems so pointless. It evokes nothing but slight disgust.

u/russtripledub 1d ago edited 21h ago
They’re socially aware. I know of a guy whose project was photocopies of his dick and he provided some social commentary on the world, linked to his art project.
I think awareness goes a lot further than being inherently smart or not. But in general, they’re usually try hards who try their best to be edgy.

Some are actually very intelligent, but some not so much. Each has thier own reasons for why they do this kind of performative art - as with any human in any endeavor - though I think there's a very similar parallel and overlap in pursuing something that's essentially peculiar and insincere. I suppose there's a curiosity to this "creativity" but I don't think it's what it portends to be; it's portrayed as high culture and intellectually introspective or whatever, but ultimately I think it's just laziness.

u/AwwHeeelllNaaah 1d ago

They're the kids who enroll in art programs and then realize they can't hack it. Those without any natural talent or drive end up cosplaying as "artists" like this.
Many of them didn't really go to real high schools either, but instead attended private "arts high schools" so they get to college and are especially out of touch.
My favorite thing about this video is that it's angled and off center, because the person filming it knows that everyone knows this is so ridiculous, and that therefore, any attempt to record it would embarrass the artist. Thus, they'd all frown on such an attempt to embarrass her, than the person holding the phone has to go out of their way to not let anyone know they're filming.
I dated a girl in college who was one of these failed artists, and so I got to know a lot of her friends in a program like this.

u/iammixedrace 1d ago
Me in my Design Degree when asked why I did something. And HAD to have a rationale for every decision.
Learned very quickly that much of art and design decisions are just - felt like it, it looks good/cool. Then to sound smart you research the hell out of a random topic and relate the piece to that. "Oh yeah red in xyz culture or thing represents nothingness to the xyz so that is represented by a red background.. now clap please"
Yes some artist/ designers start with research then refine the piece. But within all that many many many decisions were vibes based then related to the topic.

I have a degree in Fine Arts and what did I really learn? That all you need is the right Artist Statement and you can sell ANYTHING as art.
10
u/John_Save_America 1d ago
I’ve tried to look into a steel man for contemporary art, and every argument either boiled down to, or explicitly was, “you just don’t understand what the artist is portraying, you don’t have the context”. Obviously that’s bullshit, but even if it isn’t, doesn’t that just mean the artist did an inadequate job creating their art? If the majority of people don’t understand what you’re saying, you’re just a poor communicator.
Ultimately people can spend their time and money on what they want, but watching it performed or defended still rubs me the wrong way.

u/MyLifeIsAWasteland 1d ago
I had a friend who drew comics well, and any time I lamented my own drawing skills, he'd tell me "If you can tell what it's supposed to be, it's not a bad drawing."
I can't tell what this art is supposed to represent, aside from "I have a jizz fetish."

I would have way more respect for stuff like this if people would just say that they're fucking around. Like just say you have no idea what you're doing but think it's goofy enough to be worth trying. "Has anyone else done this? No? Well I'm gonna!" It's the pseudo-intellectual spin that's more off-putting than the actual thing itself. I'm totally fine with people doing what they want. Just don't sniff your own farts in the process.

Speaking as someone that actually went to an art college and understands the mindset of some of the many types of art students, I can attest to the fact that the many types of art students is practically unlimited and, as such, not as easily categorised as some would have you believe. The main point is that they are students and some are learning and excited about new definitions of art and trying new things successfully or not. Are some indulgent? Presumably. Are some wealthy? Presumably. Are they having a good fucking time? Presumably. Will most of them go on to be successful artists making a living from whatever art they are learning about? No.
Most importantly, speaking as someone that actually went to an art college, most of them had a great two, four or maybe six years of studying art and could care less about what anyone else thinks.

I’m one of those art school grad fru-fru people who thinks this type of contemporary art is valid, yes even if it’s from annoying rich kids. Do they take themselves way too seriously sometimes? Absolutely! Does the fact that it’s boring, awkward, and strange make it not art? Not necessarily! Art isn’t about producing things people want or need, that’s a very market forward way of thinking about it. It isn’t meant to be a product to sell all the time. And if this takes place in an educational setting not much is created for explicitly that purpose. The purpose is decided my the artist and the interpretation from the audience also serves that purpose even if the take away was “Well that was stu.” Commercial art is a product, but I don’t think that’s the case here.
That being said, I don’t like this performance. I think I’d enjoy displays like this if they actually leaned INTO the absurdity and inherent humor of their performances. If they got up and said “Honestly I’m just doing this for fun 😏” I’d be at least entertained. Or if they made the performance more coherent and a “target” , one performance piece that still sticks with me is Rhythm 0 by Abramovic, that piece has been talked about to death on reddit, but I bring it up because it does have a target! She leaned into the danger of exposing herself to the general public by including items she knew were meant for violence. This reply isn’t meant to be abrasive btw I just generally like discoursing and thinking about art :D!

u/13thgeneral 9h ago edited 9h ago
Thanks, that's an interesting perspective to consider. And I agree with a number of your statements, especially the bit about "leaning into the absurdity". Unfortunately I don't think many of them actually see the absurdity or embrace the oddities as somehow enlightened - and then there's the ArtLARPers whom know but ride the waves for attention and clout. For those who do understand it's a peculiar display and performance, but do it knowingly as an expression and experience, I suppose I can accept that as more honestly artistic.
