Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Show and Tell "Budget" home theater finally complete."

For many, many years now, I've always wanted a real home theater setup, but it was just never in the cards. No space, not enough money to buy a new setup.
But over the last several years, I've been accumulating speakers and amps and after getting divorced and having the house to myself, I figured it was time.

I'm a huge vintage Infinity fan and that's the route I decided to go.

Finally got in the brain earlier this week and this is now complete, calibrated, and up and running.

Source: PC via HDMI, separate cables for audio and video.

Brain: Denon AVR-A100 - came up for less than 400 in good, working condition. It runs only the center and two rear speakers.

Front speakers: Infinity RS-III (1981), 120 on Craigslist, powered by an Acurus A2002 for less than 300 bucks that just needed a single fuse replaced.

Center channel: Infinity Kappa Video Series 1, for a 108 dollars. Needed a refoam, but that was a straight forward operation, I think the kit was around 25-30 or so.

Rear speakers: Infinity Modulus (1990), found a pair in good condition for 315, used some cheap wall mounts that are surprisingly sturdy and overbuilt for the size and weight of the Modulus rears. Pic in comments. Ignore the mess, por favor.

Subwoofer 1: M&K MX350THX Mk2, under 200 locally.

Subwoofer 2: Paradigm UltraCube 10, for 250ish.

The stand is a super cheap Amazon dealie that I went kinda nuts with while putting together, so it's glued at every joint AND I put a bunch of screws in it in the parts that have two layers of particle board, so it's surprisingly sturdy. But I will eventually do something unhinged and build my own stand.

I didn't want to become a woodworker, but when companies are out there charging insane prices for MDF with a plastic laminate and calling it "Ennobled wood", well... Out of spite I'm going to make my own.

The whole thing sounds ridiculously good with huge low-end power (I had no idea so many things would rattle in my house) and the center channel is incredible for dialogue.
I finally have what I've long wanted and it's glorious.

My son and I found this gear a couple of blocks from home. Everything works and it cleaned up nicely. Good first setup for him, he has an Audio-Technica turntable and I thrifted a pair of RA Labs bookshelf speakers that I refoamed.

Edit: typo

Show and Tell You don't need to keep chasing lossless bit-perfect intergalactic binary formats to enjoy music. Currently streaming-detoxing playing my old music library from the WinAmp days and feel immersed just as I am when streaming lossless 1:1.

Setup: HD490 Pro (de-screened, memory foam pads) + Luxsin X8 (though amp is mostly irrelevant, just use the amp that sounds great on your headphones regardless of price) via MusicBee 👍

Ya know, it's not one of those 200+ Sony units but for 15 bucks, I had to snag it. Quick stovetop function test and she appears to chooch just fine.

Now to actually make a spreadsheet of my current CD collection so I quick adding duplicates to the mix.

If anyone has a spare remote, holler.

Show and Tell Second System B&W

Post image

This my Budget secondary system. I know many people will say this isn’t budget, however I bought this all second hand. This what I ended up with took a lot of time and been hunting over the years for this gear. I was very disciplined and I wasn’t going to over pay what a lot are asking.

Marantz SR6014 - $200
Marantz MM7025 - $150
B&W 804n + HTM2n - $1250
SVS Micro 3000 - $400
Total paid $2000

So just wanted to put it out there for hope and trying to build your budget setup.

Review/Discussion Old Meets New! (Moondrop Dreamdisc 2)

Post image
41 Upvotes

Around 2 months ago, I took a risk and bought the Moondrop Dreamdisc 2. I wanted a player that didn't make me worry about its age as we know... old things break (my Sony discman and DVD player are over 20 years of age).

It has a phones and line/optical out jacks so its definitely usable as a home unit or a cd transport.

Personally (as a 22 year old person that can hear above 17k), it defenitely falls behind the DVP (the unit below). It doesn't amplify the highs and lows as well and the sound stage is very narrow. However, it reads scratched up discs very well which is something the DVP can't do.

I wouldn't buy it for the price as it borderlines "budget" and you're better off with a 2nd hand Sony Discman. But if longevity is a concern then by all means, get this unit.

Purchasing USA Connecting Blu Ray to older amplifier

Hello, everyone! My current setup utilizes a Sony STR-DA30ES amplifier, which works just fine. However, I am looking for a new Blu Ray player and having a hard time finding one with outputs that would work with an older amplifier. I would love any input on players that would work well or best options for connecting. Thanks!

Got these today for 30€. The one in the left is working properly but the one on the right has a broken tweeter or some other problem that affects the tweeter.

I’m going to contact Adam Audio about the problem and availability of spare parts and so on.

What do you think I should do with the speakers after those are working again?

E: typos

The Pioneer mains were free (previous renter left them in the storage shed with a short in one speaker) the C12 center was a trade for some Klipsch speakers, the UB5 surrounds were about $200 I think, the DefTec D8 rear towers were like $100, the Velodyne CT150 sub was maybe $75. The Onkyo receiver and SVS sub were purchased new.

Purchasing USA VERA-FI AUDIO SCAM UPDATE: Avoid Shifty Schifter's new Ranger HiFi website!!

The website address is RangerHiFi.com and it appears to be Shifty Schifter's effort to distance himself from the stink that now permeates all things Vera-Fi Audio.

The Shifty One has sent multiple emails since early September alleging a few "containers" have arrived and alleges "Ron and Jordan" are busy and actively shipping product -- yet there's no evidence whatsoever of anyone receiving said product.

If the Shifty One is into you for some cash please contact me directly and I will put you in touch with the legal authorities who would like to hear from you.

Best.

PS...the guy has really ramped up his game -- advertising a $2,300 pair of speakers this time around!!

Purchasing EU/UK Which passive speakers should I choose?

Hi everyone, I own an ATLP120XBT and a Fosi V3 (48V). I'm planning on buying the ifi zen air phono 2, and I was wondering which speakers I could get. My maximum budget is €500 (overkill). Spending as little as possible would be the best option. I'm currently considering the Triangle Borea BR02 or 03. What do you think? Do you have any others in mind? I'm looking for a clean and precise sound.

Purchasing USA Looking for an amplifier to pair aestheticly with my early 80s Sony Profeel A/V setup

Post image
8 Upvotes

The setup includes:

Profeel KX-1901A CRT

VTX-1000R Tuner

SL-5000 Betamax

A TBD DVD player

A pair of SS-X1A speakers

A pair of SS-X10A speakers

The Sony MVL-1100 seems to be an amplifier sold around this time period to be used with TVs, but I couldn't find the specs for it anywhere. Would you recommend one for a setup like this, or would a different amplifier be better?

Looking at Sony amplifiers from the time period, 1980-1983, I've found the following:

  • TA-AX 2

  • TA-AX 3

  • TA-AX 4

  • TA-AX 5

  • TA-AX 6

  • TA-AX 7

  • TA-AX 8

  • TA-AX 35

Would you recommend anything from this series? Or is there another Sony model that you would recommend from the time period?

I'm not super concerned with the performance/quality of the amplifier. I just want something that matches the aesthetic and will allow me to use both pairs of speakers.

Thanks for your time.

Purchasing EU/UK Just got this Yamaha setup - looking for budget speaker recommendations!

Post image
51 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I recently got this Yamaha setup, consisting of a Yamaha AX-380 amplifier, a Yamaha KX-260 cassette deck, and a Yamaha CDX-670 CD player.

Now I’m looking for a pair of speakers to complete the setup. I’m on a budget, so I’d love to hear your recommendations for good, affordable speakers that would pair well with this amp.

I’m open to both new and used speakers. I mainly want something that sounds good for music and offers great value for the money.
What would you guys recommend? Any specific models I should look out for on the used market?

Thanks in advance! :)
