Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Review/Discussion Old Meets New! (Moondrop Dreamdisc 2)

Post image
32 Upvotes

Around 2 months ago, I took a risk and bought the Moondrop Dreamdisc 2. I wanted a player that didn't make me worry about its age as we know... old things break (my Sony discman and DVD player are over 20 years of age).

It has a phones and line/optical out jacks so its definitely usable as a home unit or a cd transport.

Personally (as a 22 year old person that can hear above 17k), it defenitely falls behind the DVP (the unit below). It doesn't amplify the highs and lows as well and the sound stage is very narrow. However, it reads scratched up discs very well which is something the DVP can't do.

I wouldn't buy it for the price as it borderlines "budget" and you're better off with a 2nd hand Sony Discman. But if longevity is a concern then by all means, get this unit.

Got these today for 30€. The one in the left is working properly but the one on the right has a broken tweeter or some other problem that affects the tweeter.

I’m going to contact Adam Audio about the problem and availability of spare parts and so on.

What do you think I should do with the speakers after those are working again?

E: typos

The Pioneer mains were free (previous renter left them in the storage shed with a short in one speaker) the C12 center was a trade for some Klipsch speakers, the UB5 surrounds were about $200 I think, the DefTec D8 rear towers were like $100, the Velodyne CT150 sub was maybe $75. The Onkyo receiver and SVS sub were purchased new.

Purchasing USA VERA-FI AUDIO SCAM UPDATE: Avoid Shifty Schifter's new Ranger HiFi website!!

The website address is RangerHiFi.com and it appears to be Shifty Schifter's effort to distance himself from the stink that now permeates all things Vera-Fi Audio.

The Shifty One has sent multiple emails since early September alleging a few "containers" have arrived and alleges "Ron and Jordan" are busy and actively shipping product -- yet there's no evidence whatsoever of anyone receiving said product.

If the Shifty One is into you for some cash please contact me directly and I will put you in touch with the legal authorities who would like to hear from you.

Best.

PS...the guy has really ramped up his game -- advertising a $2,300 pair of speakers this time around!!

Purchasing EU/UK Just got this Yamaha setup - looking for budget speaker recommendations!

Post image
41 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I recently got this Yamaha setup, consisting of a Yamaha AX-380 amplifier, a Yamaha KX-260 cassette deck, and a Yamaha CDX-670 CD player.

Now I’m looking for a pair of speakers to complete the setup. I’m on a budget, so I’d love to hear your recommendations for good, affordable speakers that would pair well with this amp.

I’m open to both new and used speakers. I mainly want something that sounds good for music and offers great value for the money.
What would you guys recommend? Any specific models I should look out for on the used market?

Thanks in advance! :)

Purchasing USA Seeking home-use speaker assistance

• Upvotes

I currently have 2 Klipsch 8000F II & a WiiM Amp Ultra - but admittedly not crazy about their size and lack of portability around the house

Would I be disappointed switching to 2 JBL Partybox 710s, 520s, 320s, or 120s?

The 8000F get very loud which I like, but it’s not like they don’t cause slight listening fatigue at higher volumes like the partyboxes do (I love my bose flex and soundlink max, they just don’t get loud enough)

-knowing i love the smaller bose, would I be better off with 2 Bose S1 Pro+ portable PAs?

Purchasing USA Looking for an amplifier to pair aestheticly with my early 80s Sony Profeel A/V setup

Post image
5 Upvotes

The setup includes:

Profeel KX-1901A CRT

VTX-1000R Tuner

SL-5000 Betamax

A TBD DVD player

A pair of SS-X1A speakers

A pair of SS-X10A speakers

The Sony MVL-1100 seems to be an amplifier sold around this time period to be used with TVs, but I couldn't find the specs for it anywhere. Would you recommend one for a setup like this, or would a different amplifier be better?

Looking at Sony amplifiers from the time period, 1980-1983, I've found the following:

  • TA-AX 2

  • TA-AX 3

  • TA-AX 4

  • TA-AX 5

  • TA-AX 6

  • TA-AX 7

  • TA-AX 8

  • TA-AX 35

Would you recommend anything from this series? Or is there another Sony model that you would recommend from the time period?

I'm not super concerned with the performance/quality of the amplifier. I just want something that matches the aesthetic and will allow me to use both pairs of speakers.

Thanks for your time.

Review/Discussion Any tips to get more out of my humble stereo setup without replacing anything?

Hi all,

This is my small stereo setup. I’m not looking to replace any component, so I’d love to hear any tips or tweaks you think could improve it (settings, connections, accessories, etc.).

Current gear

Role Model
Integrated amplifier Denon PMA-280
Speakers (out of the picture) B&W DM601 S3
Turntable Denon DP-200USB
CD transport Sony DVP-NS33 (DVD player used as a CD transport)
DAC SMSL SD-793II
Streaming (hidden in the back) Belkin AirPlay 2 adapter into the Denon’s AUX input (iPhone / Mac)

Signal chain

  • Sony DVP-NS33 → [coax] → SMSL SD-793II → [RCA] → Denon [CD]
  • Denon DP-200USB → [built-in phono preamp OFF→ Denon PHONO input]
  • Belkin AirPlay 2 → Denon AUX
My audio setup :)

The speakers are on shelves on each side of the room. It’s a small room and I can’t change that, so I’m not looking for placement advice.

Thanks!

Purchasing EU/UK Moving away from my home theater system and transitioning to a desktop 2.1 system with my existing subwoofer and receiver, would appreciate suggestions for bookshelf speakers.

So I've been running an Elac 5.1 for over a year now, but I've recently come to the conclusion that I watch so much stuff on my PC and it's always an ask to just stay at the sofa and just watch stuff on it that I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off beefing up my PC set up and letting the home theater go since I don't use it enough to warrant how much I've sunk into it.

I have had a denon avr-x1700h receiver, Elac Varro PS-350 subwoofer, Elac Debut 6.3 as the LCR and Elac Debut B4s as the surround speakers.

My pops has been generous enough to take on the LCR from me and put them to his own use, so I'm left with the receiver, the sub and the bookshelves. I'm currently using them as my 2.1 system, but I'm intending on switching from the B4s to something better considering my system currently consists of a subwoofer I bought for 680€, a receiver I bought for 300€ and bookshelf speakers I bought for 80€ which is a hilarious discrepancy.

Right now there's a listing for Elac Debut 5.3 Bookshelves for 280€+ fees. Another site has B6.2s for 170€ + fees. I'm also thinking about potentially contacting the person I sold my Klipsch RP-500Ms to considering I very much remember having kind of sort of regretted selling them forwards.

Asides from those, I'm entertaining all options. My budget is somewhat flexible, the debut 5.3s would certainly match the Varro being the same system, but if anyone has any ideas of what could be better for a 70-30 movies-music habit, I'm all ears.

Desk space isn't an issue. I have one stand I can set the other one on and position it outside the desk.

Show and Tell Planned budget setup

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m new to the audiophile world, but I’ve always wanted to put together a vinyl setup for warm home listening. For years it was like, "nah, maybe someday, it’s not a priority, it’s not the right time, blah blah..." Years were passing, and a few months ago something just clicked in me, and I was like, "OK, the time is NOW!" Funny enough, this realization came right when I need to save money the most, because in half a year I'll have to spend a huge amount updating my working licenses and stuff like that, lol.

But anyway, I decided to start.

After doing a lot of research on how best to get into the audiophile world on a tight budget, here’s what I decided to get:

ALREADY BOUGHT:

- ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 — $256 (used / second-hand);

- Cross-Tech 70cm Speaker Stands — $127 (new)

PLANNED FOR NEXT MONTH:

- Denon PMA-520AE — $128 (used / second-hand)

- Audio-Technica AT-LP120X-USB — $307 (new)

What do you guys think of this setup?

Purchasing USA Cheap Mini speaker(s) for Dorm?

My TV's speakers are dying out—or maybe I'm going deaf—because I can hardly hear anyone speak! I don't have a lot of space or money to work with. (Maybe around $40-50 max) I'm not particularly picky with sound quality, but I don't want it to sound like a tin can either, yk? It's an old TV from the early 2010s or so, so I'd have to either pair it with Bluetooth via my fire TV stick, or plug it in with analog. Any help or even just pointers to a database or brand will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Show and Tell JVC R-X60

$60 and included a JVC AL-A158. Hooked up to Design Acoustics PS 8b. 55 watts. It makes a beeping noise when in radio search. Those who remember Japanese cars from the 1980s will appreciate all the lights. A couple pluses for the era is that they are colorful, much lighter than the hefty ones from a decade prior, still have a phono amp but may include some more modern input options. And JVC equalizer known as S.E.A, is a nice touch.

Purchasing USA So Many Questions, So Little Time - 🚨Noobie Alert🚨

I’ve finally done it! I’ve upgraded from a crappy all-in-one. Today, I bought an Audio-Technica AT-LP3 ($90 on FB Marketplace) and a Sony STRDH190 ($90 on Craigslist). Both are in near pristine condition and work well.

I’ve been shopping around for sub-$300 used tower speakers, but haven’t found any in local thrift stores, on FB Marketplace or Craigslist. Since I want to get my system up and running asap, I’m thinking of biting the bullet and just buying a new pair of Dayton Audio Classic T65’s for $230.

I’m also considering upgrading the stock stylus on the LP3 (ATN-91) to an AT-VM95EN or AT-VMN95ML.

A few questions…
(1) Did I get a good deal on the turntable and receiver or did I biff it?
(2) For the price, are Dayton Audio Class T65 speakers a good starter set?
(3) Will a stylus upgrades make a significant difference in the sound quality of my system? If so, would you recommend the AT-VM95EN or AT-VMN95ML?

Purchasing USA Good CD Player?

Hey ! im fairly new to the whole home stereo scene but i recently bought a BSR 610 turntable off of facebook market place, and hooked it up to a pair of speakers ive had lying around. Im in the process of purchasing products to round out the set up, such as a phono preamp, but another thing that ive found quite mixed ideas on is the CD player, id like to hook it up to the same speakers so that i can use the record player some days and a CD player others. But every good quality record player im finding is like 200 - 300+ USD ? i cant imagine thats how much i should be paying.

To be honestly ill probably end up thrifting a shitty CD player, even if i have to fix it up a bit, but if any of yall have suggestions on cheaper CD players id love to hear.

edit: would also love your opinions on more mobile cd players ? thank you

Requesting guidance on where to begin fixing a power issue with this Soundesign 5954 AM / FM Receiver / Stereo Cassette / 8 Track Recorder

The only light that comes on briefly when powered on is the FM Stereo light.

The Rec. Level dials move to the right and the Tuning dial wiggles when powered on.

When Play is pressed for Tape, the unit has a faint internal hum.

Review/Discussion Outlaw RR2150 and KEF 104/2

Post image
10 Upvotes

Recently picked up the Outlaw RR2150 to power the KEF’s. They are finally alive. The spaceship is complete for now:

- Outlaw RR2150, one owner, really clean, and I like the look and simplicity.(300.00)

- KEF 104/2’s, immaculate condition, owner was a speaker builder/enthusiast, being powered by the Outlaw (400.00)

- ADS L620’s, I got these in terrible structural condition. Dried, repaired, sanded, painted, sealed, I really enjoy their bass response. I use them as booth monitors when DJing, and turn them forward for that Wall of Sound effect for movies (20.00)

- Fosi ZA3 powering the ADS’s

- Auris Blume HD Bluetooth DAC

- Two Technics 1200 MKII (350.00 for both, I like to negotiate)

- Pioneer DJM 750 MKII, everything runs through this. I use it as a pre-amp / EQ.

- Yamaha CR-1020 It’s out of commission and will be posted on eBay for parts.

And I won’t get into all the DJ and guitar equipment I hook up to this from the studio to A/B sounds. That’s for another sub and discussion.
