Got these today for 30€. The one in the left is working properly but the one on the right has a broken tweeter or some other problem that affects the tweeter.

I’m going to contact Adam Audio about the problem and availability of spare parts and so on.

What do you think I should do with the speakers after those are working again?

E: typos

Purchasing EU/UK Just got this Yamaha setup - looking for budget speaker recommendations!

Post image

Hey everyone! I recently got this Yamaha setup, consisting of a Yamaha AX-380 amplifier, a Yamaha KX-260 cassette deck, and a Yamaha CDX-670 CD player.

Now I’m looking for a pair of speakers to complete the setup. I’m on a budget, so I’d love to hear your recommendations for good, affordable speakers that would pair well with this amp.

I’m open to both new and used speakers. I mainly want something that sounds good for music and offers great value for the money.
What would you guys recommend? Any specific models I should look out for on the used market?

Thanks in advance! :)

Review/Discussion Old Meets New! (Moondrop Dreamdisc 2)

Post image
40 Upvotes

Around 2 months ago, I took a risk and bought the Moondrop Dreamdisc 2. I wanted a player that didn't make me worry about its age as we know... old things break (my Sony discman and DVD player are over 20 years of age).

It has a phones and line/optical out jacks so its definitely usable as a home unit or a cd transport.

Personally (as a 22 year old person that can hear above 17k), it defenitely falls behind the DVP (the unit below). It doesn't amplify the highs and lows as well and the sound stage is very narrow. However, it reads scratched up discs very well which is something the DVP can't do.

I wouldn't buy it for the price as it borderlines "budget" and you're better off with a 2nd hand Sony Discman. But if longevity is a concern then by all means, get this unit.

The Pioneer mains were free (previous renter left them in the storage shed with a short in one speaker) the C12 center was a trade for some Klipsch speakers, the UB5 surrounds were about $200 I think, the DefTec D8 rear towers were like $100, the Velodyne CT150 sub was maybe $75. The Onkyo receiver and SVS sub were purchased new.

Show and Tell "Budget" home theater finally complete."

Post image
• Upvotes

For many, many years now, I've always wanted a real home theater setup, but it was just never in the cards. No space, not enough money to buy a new setup.
But over the last several years, I've been accumulating speakers and amps and after getting divorced and having the house to myself, I figured it was time.

I'm a huge vintage Infinity fan and that's the route I decided to go.

Finally got in the brain earlier this week and this is now complete, calibrated, and up and running.

Source: PC via HDMI, separate cables for audio and video.

Brain: Denon AVR-A100 - came up for less than 400 in good, working condition. It runs only the center and two rear speakers.

Front speakers: Infinity RS-III (1981), 120 on Craigslist, powered by an Acurus A2002 for less than 300 bucks that just needed a single fuse replaced.

Center channel: Infinity Kappa Video Series 1, for a 108 dollars. Needed a refoam, but that was a straight forward operation, I think the kit was around 25-30 or so.

Rear speakers: Infinity Modulus (1990), found a pair in good condition for 315, used some cheap wall mounts that are surprisingly sturdy and overbuilt for the size and weight of the Modulus rears. Pic in comments. Ignore the mess, por favor.

Subwoofer 1: M&K MX350THX Mk2, under 200 locally.

Subwoofer 2: Paradigm UltraCube 10, for 250ish.

The stand is a super cheap Amazon dealie that I went kinda nuts with while putting together, so it's glued at every joint AND I put a bunch of screws in it in the parts that have two layers of particle board, so it's surprisingly sturdy. But I will eventually do something unhinged and build my own stand.

I didn't want to become a woodworker, but when companies are out there charging insane prices for MDF with a plastic laminate and calling it "Ennobled wood", well... Out of spite I'm going to make my own.

The whole thing sounds ridiculously good with huge low-end power (I had no idea so many things would rattle in my house) and the center channel is incredible for dialogue.
I finally have what I've long wanted and it's glorious.

Purchasing USA VERA-FI AUDIO SCAM UPDATE: Avoid Shifty Schifter's new Ranger HiFi website!!

The website address is RangerHiFi.com and it appears to be Shifty Schifter's effort to distance himself from the stink that now permeates all things Vera-Fi Audio.

The Shifty One has sent multiple emails since early September alleging a few "containers" have arrived and alleges "Ron and Jordan" are busy and actively shipping product -- yet there's no evidence whatsoever of anyone receiving said product.

If the Shifty One is into you for some cash please contact me directly and I will put you in touch with the legal authorities who would like to hear from you.

Best.

PS...the guy has really ramped up his game -- advertising a $2,300 pair of speakers this time around!!

Purchasing USA Looking for an amplifier to pair aestheticly with my early 80s Sony Profeel A/V setup

Post image
7 Upvotes

The setup includes:

Profeel KX-1901A CRT

VTX-1000R Tuner

SL-5000 Betamax

A TBD DVD player

A pair of SS-X1A speakers

A pair of SS-X10A speakers

The Sony MVL-1100 seems to be an amplifier sold around this time period to be used with TVs, but I couldn't find the specs for it anywhere. Would you recommend one for a setup like this, or would a different amplifier be better?

Looking at Sony amplifiers from the time period, 1980-1983, I've found the following:

  • TA-AX 2

  • TA-AX 3

  • TA-AX 4

  • TA-AX 5

  • TA-AX 6

  • TA-AX 7

  • TA-AX 8

  • TA-AX 35

Would you recommend anything from this series? Or is there another Sony model that you would recommend from the time period?

I'm not super concerned with the performance/quality of the amplifier. I just want something that matches the aesthetic and will allow me to use both pairs of speakers.

Thanks for your time.

Requesting guidance on where to begin fixing a power issue with this Soundesign 5954 AM / FM Receiver / Stereo Cassette / 8 Track Recorder

The only light that comes on briefly when powered on is the FM Stereo light.

The Rec. Level dials move to the right and the Tuning dial wiggles when powered on.

When Play is pressed for Tape, the unit has a faint internal hum.

Show and Tell JVC R-X60

$60 and included a JVC AL-A158. Hooked up to Design Acoustics PS 8b. 55 watts. It makes a beeping noise when in radio search. Those who remember Japanese cars from the 1980s will appreciate all the lights. A couple pluses for the era is that they are colorful, much lighter than the hefty ones from a decade prior, still have a phono amp but may include some more modern input options. And JVC equalizer known as S.E.A, is a nice touch.

Purchasing USA Looking for good quality turntable or cassette player to last a lifetime!

I am someone who loves music, and over the years my vinyl collection has grown significantly. 200-300 rock/punk albums. Unfortunately for my records they have been played on a new record player that’s quality is anything but good. I think what has held me back is there are so many options out there. As well as Ads trying to push new turn tables on me. It’s like trying to find something good in a sea of shit. I feel I don’t know much about quality turn tables and what is best. My budget is as high as $500. I want to buy second hand and I want to buy something that will last me the rest of my life! Any recommendations on models that fit this description are greatly appreciated!

Purchasing USA Cheap Mini speaker(s) for Dorm?

My TV's speakers are dying out—or maybe I'm going deaf—because I can hardly hear anyone speak! I don't have a lot of space or money to work with. (Maybe around $40-50 max) I'm not particularly picky with sound quality, but I don't want it to sound like a tin can either, yk? It's an old TV from the early 2010s or so, so I'd have to either pair it with Bluetooth via my fire TV stick, or plug it in with analog. Any help or even just pointers to a database or brand will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Purchasing USA Good CD Player?

Hey ! im fairly new to the whole home stereo scene but i recently bought a BSR 610 turntable off of facebook market place, and hooked it up to a pair of speakers ive had lying around. Im in the process of purchasing products to round out the set up, such as a phono preamp, but another thing that ive found quite mixed ideas on is the CD player, id like to hook it up to the same speakers so that i can use the record player some days and a CD player others. But every good quality record player im finding is like 200 - 300+ USD ? i cant imagine thats how much i should be paying.

To be honestly ill probably end up thrifting a shitty CD player, even if i have to fix it up a bit, but if any of yall have suggestions on cheaper CD players id love to hear.

edit: would also love your opinions on more mobile cd players ? thank you

Purchasing CAN Garage listening setup

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi, total audio newb here looking for input. My wife and I are building a house with an attached 3 car garage on a 30° angle in relation to the house and I’m planning out a man cave area in the “triangle” part of the garage. See attached diagram with the layout, the red part is the house.

My idea right now is to put two speakers on wall mounts at the ceiling in the locations marked by the yellow circles, with the speakers pointed towards the couch direction. I have them positioned kind of far away because my listening preference is to have the speakers loud but not too close so that you can’t have a conversation with someone. [EDIT: after looking at the diagram some more, maybe I would be better off putting the wall speakers on each side of the TV to create a more equal distance between my listening position and each speaker? I could put a chair on the opposite side of the coffee table to place myself exactly in an equilateral triangle to the speakers when I want to just listen to music.]

I would like to have the speakers hardwired so I need to plan out the conduit before we drywall so I can have it all hidden inside the walls. My wife has a pair of JBL PartyBox 110s for her home gym, they’re good speakers but they drive me nuts fussing around with the Bluetooth connection sometimes, and also having to pair them in stereo every time. So that’s my reasoning behind wanting these ones hardwired with an AUX input coming out of the wall near the bar area.

As far as speakers, I’m not sure what to go with. I’m pretty handy so if building my own speaker boxes is a good way save some coin then I’d be interested in going that route. Otherwise if there’s something off the shelf that would be recommended?

Thanks!

Review/Discussion Any tips to get more out of my humble stereo setup without replacing anything?

Hi all,

This is my small stereo setup. I’m not looking to replace any component, so I’d love to hear any tips or tweaks you think could improve it (settings, connections, accessories, etc.).

Current gear

Role Model
Integrated amplifier Denon PMA-280
Speakers (out of the picture) B&W DM601 S3
Turntable Denon DP-200USB
CD transport Sony DVP-NS33 (DVD player used as a CD transport)
DAC SMSL SD-793II
Streaming (hidden in the back) Belkin AirPlay 2 adapter into the Denon’s AUX input (iPhone / Mac)

Signal chain

  • Sony DVP-NS33 → [coax] → SMSL SD-793II → [RCA] → Denon [CD]
  • Denon DP-200USB → [built-in phono preamp OFF→ Denon PHONO input]
  • Belkin AirPlay 2 → Denon AUX
My audio setup :)

The speakers are on shelves on each side of the room. It’s a small room and I can’t change that, so I’m not looking for placement advice.

Thanks!

Purchasing USA So Many Questions, So Little Time - 🚨Noobie Alert🚨

I’ve finally done it! I’ve upgraded from a crappy all-in-one. Today, I bought an Audio-Technica AT-LP3 ($90 on FB Marketplace) and a Sony STRDH190 ($90 on Craigslist). Both are in near pristine condition and work well.

I’ve been shopping around for sub-$300 used tower speakers, but haven’t found any in local thrift stores, on FB Marketplace or Craigslist. Since I want to get my system up and running asap, I’m thinking of biting the bullet and just buying a new pair of Dayton Audio Classic T65’s for $230.

I’m also considering upgrading the stock stylus on the LP3 (ATN-91) to an AT-VM95EN or AT-VMN95ML.

A few questions…
(1) Did I get a good deal on the turntable and receiver or did I biff it?
(2) For the price, are Dayton Audio Class T65 speakers a good starter set?
(3) Will a stylus upgrades make a significant difference in the sound quality of my system? If so, would you recommend the AT-VM95EN or AT-VMN95ML?

Tech Support Connecting subwoofer if using 2 x Fosi ZA3s in mono and preamp is a DJ mixer. How?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I want to add a subwoofer to my setup, but I'm uncertain on the best way to connect the subwoofer to the my mixer. I've added a screenshot of the connections of all the components.

The mixer is a Pioneer DJM-S11 and is connected from the MASTER 1 to two Fosi ZA3 amps via XLR. The subwoofer I'm considering is a Mirage Omni S10.

I'm guessing I would use a Y splitter RCA (male to male) cable? I would connect this to MASTER 2 of the mixer and then connect the other end to the single SUB INPUT of the subwoofer and then adjust the sub volume on the subwoofer. Does that sound right? You can see there is a HIGH LEVEL INPUT, but I'm uncertain on how to use those connections.

Purchasing EU/UK Which passive speakers should I choose?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I own an ATLP120XBT and a Fosi V3 (48V). I'm planning on buying the ifi zen air phono 2, and I was wondering which speakers I could get. My maximum budget is €500 (overkill). Spending as little as possible would be the best option. I'm currently considering the Triangle Borea BR02 or 03. What do you think? Do you have any others in mind? I'm looking for a clean and precise sound.

Purchasing USA Seeking home-use speaker assistance

I currently have 2 Klipsch 8000F II & a WiiM Amp Ultra - but admittedly not crazy about their size and lack of portability around the house

Would I be disappointed switching to 2 JBL Partybox 710s, 520s, 320s, or 120s?

The 8000F get very loud which I like, but it’s not like they don’t cause slight listening fatigue at higher volumes like the partyboxes do (I love my bose flex and soundlink max, they just don’t get loud enough)

-knowing i love the smaller bose, would I be better off with 2 Bose S1 Pro+ portable PAs?
