Weekly Bodacious Space Pirates • Mouretsu Pirates - Anime of the Week
43
Upvotes
Welcome to the weekly Anime of the Week Discussion Thread! Each week, we're here to discuss various older anime series. Today we are discussing...
Far in the future, where interstellar travel is considered commonplace, high school student Marika Katou balances her duties in the space yacht club and her job as a restaurant waitress. Following a chance encounter with a peculiar pair of customers, Marika meets them again and learns that her absent father has passed away.
During his life, he was known as the legendary pirate "Gonzaemon." He has left behind his infamous ship Bentenmaru and its crew exclusively for Marika to inherit. With one of the few remaining Letters of Marque that permit legal piracy, Marika must choose whether to stay as a regular student or take up a second life as a high-octane space pirate.
As Marika ponders her decision, the delicate situation attracts the eyes of various government agencies and the mysterious transfer student Chiaki Kurihara, all eager to see if the upcoming captain lives up to her father's reputation. If the crew of the Bentenmaru want to maintain their status, they will need to set sail into the vast expanse of space and once again become a name to be feared.

Discussion Why did a bunch of anime, around 2008, include warnings about watching anime in a well-lit room?
45
Upvotes
I've been working my way through Gin Tama, and I'm in the 100s, episode-wise which were airing in 2008. And they all include on-screen warnings about watching TV in a well-lit room. The episodes before about number 100 didn't have that warning. In addition, the first season of Hayate No Gotoku included a similar warning, and that was airing between 2008 and 2009. I'm well aware of the Pokemon seizure incident, but that was in 1997, and there were plenty of anime that aired between then and 2008 that didn't have that warning.

Discussion What was your first anime?
36
Upvotes
Hi everyone! I'm curious about how people got into anime.
My first anime was Bakugan, and after that I watched Naruto. I have some memories of watching them when I was younger, and I'm curious about what other people started with.
What was the first anime you ever watched? Was it something you discovered as a child, or did you get into anime later in life? I'd love to hear your stories!

Discussion Most Unique Anime OPs and EDs
23
Upvotes
I thought it would be fun to make a list of the best OPs (Opening songs) and EDs (Ending songs) that are visually and musically unique. Obviously, this is all my opinion, but I tried to be as objective as possible.
The videos I've linked to have the animation from the anime, since those are the visuals I’m judging (and I’m giving the visuals a bit more weight than the music). I tried to link to official videos, but if I couldn’t find them, I used the most popular unofficial uploads. That said, let me know if I missed any official uploads!
Also, please let me know about any other OPs/EDs with unique music and visuals! I’m always on the lookout to discover more!
I’ve roughly ordered them from most to least unique, but it was very hard to decide, so don’t take the order too seriously.
Warning: Some OPs and EDs have mild violence or adult content.
Well Known but Worth the Hype
- Anything by Creepy Nuts, but especially (from favorite to least favorite)
- Undead Unluck OP 1
- Black Clover OP 10
- Kakegurui OP 1
- Frieren ED 1
- Domestic Girlfriend OP
- Jaadugar OP 1 and ED 1
- Every Oshi no Ko OP (in chronological order cause I can’t choose between them)
- Kaiju No. 8 OP 1
- Trigun Stampede OP 1
- Any Apothecary Diaries OP, but especially (from favorite to least favorite)
- To be Hero X OP 1
- Yuri on Ice OP
- You and I are Polar Opposites OP 1
- Witch Hat Atelier OP 1
- Zom 100 OP 2
- Link Click OP 1
- Bishounen Tanteidan (Pretty Boy Detective Club) OP
- My Hero Acadamia (final season) ED
Hidden Gems
- The World is Dancing OP
- Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines ED 2 (Also, here’s the Spotify link since it’s kinda impossible to search for there)
- Journal with Witch OP
- Elusive Samurai ED 1
- Komi can’t Communicate ED 2
- Sanda OP
- Witch Watch OP 1
- Goodbye, Lara ED
- Shoshimin OP 2
- I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day OP 1
