Damn, Fran's body being literally torn apart during the fight was freaking brutal. The same goes for the scene where she was mentally attacked and saw Teacher, Jean, Urushi, and herself dying.
In the end, Fran and Teacher just barely managed to defeat that Skeleton Knight in this episode, so I seriously wonder how she's going to beat the Dungeon Master.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I’ve said it in another comment but Fran being just so incredibly tough is just crazy. Like being willing to break her bones multiple times to do a finishing move? And have teacher just heal her back up? She’s crazy
36
u/ad3z10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/ad3z10 1d ago
She must be absolutely terrifying to face in battle for a regular person, especially if they realise what she's putting her body through without even complaining.

u/ussgordoncaptain2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Edmund_Nelson 20h ago
There's a reason the whole guild was like "who the hell is fran and is she actually a spy"
Fran is an adventurer who shows up out of nowhere with C rank level skill, (and by now probably B rank) who also has no backstory and has no real known origin.
Like "who the hell are you and why is this A ranked adventurer so interested in you" are the 2 most pressing questions about fran to an outsider

She's already there, lol. I wonder if the Royal Etiquette skill helps her avoid the whole sword licking thing.

She’s crazy
She's gotta be crazy as hell to get to her goal. Trying to evolve like every other Black Cat person when they supposedly can't. Gotta be crazy to attempt the impossible.

If it's anything like other anime/RPG, the life of a slave will do that for you.

that was a rollercoaster, first few episodes were meh ish to me , but holy crap, getting torn apart from blocking is insane.
cant recall if this is one of the first instances i've seen this. especially the thigh scene

u/Accurate_Treat6360 1d ago
"IT DODGED?! THAT'S ILLEGAL."
Skeleton Knight was on demon time after seeing his undead horse die. Bro battle IQ is way to good lol.

u/Jacob-C 22h ago
It really added some humanity to the nameless skeleton dungeon boss. It's basically how Fran would react if Urushi or Shishou died.
6
u/Hot-Log6283 19h ago
Pretty sure we saw how she reacted when she got hit by that Fear/Panic skill from the Lich.
56
u/Falsus 1d ago
Fran really getting the Alicia treatment this season isn't between the falling and body breaking?
23
u/bb2b 19h ago
Roll Over and Die, Clevatess, and Sword. We need more strong unafraid female protag/deuteragonists wreaking havoc.
4
2
u/Falsus 7h ago
This season got Mugino from ITEM and Lufas from A Wild Last Boss Appeared also.
Soon there will also be Alia from Otome Heroine's Struggle For Survival.
1
u/bb2b 2h ago
I forgot about Last boss! But, technically that's a male reincarnated so kinda sorta.
Railgun also had strong girls. But, kinda got bored of that franchise so maybe I'll go back and check out ITEM? Dunno tho
1
u/Falsus 50m ago
There is plenty of strong female characters besides Lufas in A Wild Last Boss also.
[big, big, big spoiler for last boss]There is more to Lufas's gender situation than is merely being presented right now, so it should kinda count.

3rd episode and we already got a fight worthy of a season finale. Fuck yeah.

u/epicfail1994 1d ago
The fights in this show are consistently amazing, it’s a shame it’s kinda stuck in the HiDive gulag and thus doesn’t get the attention it deserves as one of the better isekai out there
33
u/mekerpan 1d ago edited 23h ago
>> HiDive gulag.
Still, I don't begrudge having to pay for access to what it has to offer.
13
u/tapdancinghellspawn 23h ago
I joined HiDive to watch GuP. Then K-On! Then a bunch of other anime, such as, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! and The Eminence in Shadow. HiDive has gotten me through some dark times.
3
u/Razor4884 18h ago
Plus, just simply _not_ being Crunchyroll is a point in its favor. I don't even want to imagine what they would look like with even more market share.

HiDive gulag
Yeah ...
Putting good shows on obscure streaming services half the world can't even access is a crime, ngl. It stifles a shows reach and success.
In my country its on one of Primes paid channels. Watching shit legal is such a pain.
10
u/tapdancinghellspawn 23h ago
Agreed. If it were on CR or Netflix, it would be one of the biggest anime. We need to spread the word. Pump up the numbers so we get more seasons.

u/epicfail1994 23h ago
It’s my favorite isekai period
The fights these last two episodes have been amazing and this one was brutal
7
u/tapdancinghellspawn 22h ago
I almost skipped this anime because of the premise. Reincarnated as a something something. But I gave it a chance and immediately fell in love with it. What's not to love. A father figure who just happens to be a sword watching over an adorable curry loving cat girl. I hope this anime runs forever.

That fight was brutal, damn.
47
37
u/1000TrickRick 1d ago
Had to rewind when she tore her knee, like damn did that just happen? Then it got worse, and then the fear illusion happened. Only 3 episodes in and it’s so intense. Loving it.
16
u/VritraReiRei 21h ago
I look at how brutal the Skeleton Knight fight was then weep at how they ruined the actual Skeleton Knight from last season...
37
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
Oh wow season really delivering on the fights. God damn is the fight is brutal. I know Shishou can heal Fran, but that still has to hurt serverily.
I am curious about the Lich's connection to the dungeon. As we know the 3 kids were from the flashback. Damn the moment went towards the Lich it almost broke her.
21
u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 1d ago
I got to assume the boy is the lich. In the OP it does show the boy and then fade into showing the lich standing in the same position.
5
u/Perkelion 21h ago
i don't think so, in the flashback he was clearly the undead eater
7
u/Hot-Log6283 20h ago
At the end the boy said "That was the day I ceased being human." - it's possible that Undead eater/Stefan is his "humanity" along with his diary, and what's left over is this lich.
4
u/mischievous_shota 20h ago
Then whose form is Stefan taking?
1
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 8h ago
someone was theorising that maybe the unnamed boy split, his physical to the lich and his spiritual to the eater. It could also just be the asshole who was running the operation.
32
u/Sakulle 1d ago
Holy broken femur, Batman! That was Graphic! Sure, fighting the blue cat to the pain was, too, but watching poor little Fran have her leg basic ripped off as they SHOW the bone snap in two was several orders of magnitude worse.
At least she got to eat curry over that skellies corpse.
21
u/desmaraisp 1d ago
Not just broken, that shit was straight-up torn off, yikes. She's one tough cookie

Serious whiplash from this episode, but one of the best greatsword depictions out there.
20
43
u/FelixAndCo 1d ago
Unironically "they didn't need to go that hard". I almost feel like it takes too much attention from the generic "level-up" plot that created their victory. Season 1 never really phoned it in with moves in battle, but every knockback and parry here was choreographed with intention, and great animation.
27
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1d ago
Man I must've forgotten how brutally graphic this anime is because seeing Fran's leg being torn off and her arms exploding on impact caught me off guard O_O
That Heavy Slash attack was awesome! Not gonna lie, I was hoping Shishou would transform into a hammer and crush the skeleton knight's skull, but extending the blade was pretty cool too.
Fran dancing while using the fried chicken legs as maracas was adorable. A nice little bit of cuteness before we enter the dungeon's final boss.
They got me there for a second. I really thought Jean actually got one-shotted by the boss. As soon as Urushi started melting and Shishou got Thanos snapped, it was pretty obvious it was all an illusion.
The next episode is definitely gonna be intense. If Fran and Shishou were pushed to their limits by that skeleton knight, I'm excited to see how they'll handle the Lich fight.

In this episode we learn Fran was born to be a Tank class while Jean sits back and watches a tween bursting her muscles fighting a legendary skeleton
18
u/mabbo_nagamatsu 20h ago
Fran really should've been an AGI focus but she chooses to be a Heal Tank because whatever damage she suffers Sishou will heal it anyway.
10
u/Patchourisu 13h ago
I mean, she WAS dodging most attacks to begin with when she could, but the Skeleton Knight was very well intent on not letting her dodge his attacks after it was enraged.

Awesome fight. They really had to give their all. That final slash kinda reminded me of Demon Slayer Ep 19
The Dungeon Master looks almost impossible to beat atm, especially after that fight. Though I assume Stefan will be the ace up our sleeve somehow
13
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 1d ago
We don't know what happened to Fry still either. New risky skill + Fry will come into play somehow. They feel like Chekov's Guns.
1
u/Hot-Log6283 19h ago
Fry? You mean Fly? Jean's ghost that map out the dungeon? Didn't he said it most likely got killed?
3
u/oops_i_made_a_typi 17h ago
That final slash kinda reminded me of Demon Slayer Ep 19
yeah i had that thought too, with the multiple repeats from different angles, and slow mo of the full arc of the sword sweeping through the head/neck
40
u/AceSoldia https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 1d ago edited 1d ago
Wow what a brutal fight..the whole episode was combat they barely survived..and that fear effect was wild.
I dunno how they gonna manage to defeat this Lich
15
u/Obaruler 1d ago
I mean ... the Lich is drip feeding them XP by sending strong underlings at them first (unless summons don't count ...).
For as long as Shisho doesn't run out of MP thats basically power-leveling.
4
u/Shadowlord723 21h ago
Summons usually do count for exp as far as I know according to when they farmed the beetle summons in season 1.
However even that can get exhausting after a while, so imagine trying to fight a continuous onslaught of undead summons while also dealing with the dungeon master.
11
u/mekerpan 1d ago
It seemms impossible -- unless Frqan gets a major power-up midway through.
13
u/AceSoldia https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 1d ago
Maybe she evolves!
7
u/mekerpan 1d ago
I don't see any other feasible way for her to have a chance if she doesn't.
5
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 8h ago
they got unlock potential from the stone, very high chance that comes in to play. Maybe even another level on sword arts
5
u/Viktorv22 1d ago
My guess is an incredible power-up with her newly got latent power skill. She got it for a reason just now heh
13
u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 22h ago edited 22h ago
I dunno how they gonna manage to defeat this Lich
Prediction: (1) Obviously Jean is going to use his vitality sapping named bone staff, not sure what it's going to do but control undead would be pretty helpful; (2) Stefan is going to come back from whatever sidequest Jean sent him on with some resource that was Jean's "backup plan for emergencies" - probably something that can partially depower the lich; (3) Stefan might then use his undead-eater powers to great effect - especially if it turns out that the lich harbors the intelligence of one of the bad guys from the flashbacks; (4) Fran has levelled up and probably has unallocated skill points that she might allocate at a pivotal moment, like how Shishou got Advanced Sword Mastery Rank 5 in the last fight.
Oh yeah, and as a number of people have pointed out, they are going to use Potential Unleashed at a pivotal moment.

also good to see fran is building up a nice collection of magic swords. with the addition of deathgaze she's now up to 4.
24
u/ad3z10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/ad3z10 1d ago
I'm looking forward to her pulling off an unlimited blade works in the future with how her collection is growing.
5
u/misteryk 1d ago
i wonder what the range of storage and telekinesis is. Imaging taking out like 20 swords behind someone's back while they're distracted and shooting them with telekinetic catapult
3
u/epicfail1994 23h ago
It's mentioned in season 1 in a blink and you'll miss it way, but there's one character that does something kinda like that
1
u/mischievous_shota 20h ago
They're clearly meant to be for Fran to use in situations where she can use Shishou for whatever reason but I wonder if there's a way for him to somehow absorb their unique properties for himself.
1
8
u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 1d ago
Somewhat concerning to have a sword with instant death on hit, it may actually be her most powerful sword now. Only way to defend against it appears to be save vs instant death buff or skill, such as Fran has on her special armour.
2
u/Hot-Log6283 19h ago
Most boss would probably have immunity to that, so it's probably useful for clearing out mobs.

Like AoT... that took 7... and was worth every minute.
That combat was season-ending material...in chapter 3!!!!
16
u/Ceryto2 https://anilist.co/user/Ceryto 1d ago
Another amazing episode! I just love to see Fran fight, she just has such a metal fighting style and I love how the anime just doesn't hold back on showing it. Her limbs being completely torn apart and healed up again is just such brutal imagery. But fortunately Fran and Shishou prevailed and we got rewarded with some amazing Fran Curry scenes.
Next week Fran will finally get to fight a Dungeon Mastaaa and considering how difficult her last opponent was, this fight definitely won't be an easy one. Really looking forward to seeing her beat up that Lich and probably finding out how all those flashbacks tie in with this dungeon.
As for the weekly Curry report: Today I wanted to do something different than the usual curry+rice combo, so I dissolved a block of golden curry and put it together with some minced turkey and panko (and some other stuff) and made Curry flavored Tsukune. And I was actually surprised how much I could taste the Curry in those. I think that actually fit quite well together and they were really quite tasty. And considering Fran was also at first forced onto a Curryless diet until she did the cutest "Give me Curry dance", maybe Shishou should have just done the same and combined the curry and the meat today. But then I wouldn't have seen Fran say "Dase, dase, dase!" in such a cute way, so maybe it was for the better this way.
15
u/TheOneWithALongName 1d ago
Reminds me about the demon fight in S1. But more brutal. Who knew killing his steed would activate some sort of berserker mode.
9
u/JoeyTheNekoGuy 1d ago
kill someones pet and they go apeshit. turns out this applies to undead too.
7
u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 1d ago
I was thinking of Ornstein and Smough.
3
u/Razor4884 18h ago
When a new MMO raid comes out and someone suggests to defeat the annoying mob first. That will make the fight easier, surely.
2
u/Hot-Log6283 19h ago
I believe this also happened in one of the fight in SLF, so the studio would have some great experience doing that already.
41
u/Shmappii 1d ago
I was a little worried about a continuation for this show after Skeleton Knight Season 2 let me down, but this has been awesome so far. Threats keep getting stronger, Fran has definitely become mentally tougher after getting both arms cut off last season, and the show isn't afraid of having a fight take up most of the episode by committing to varied choreography.
My only knock against the current arc is the main characters having little to no awareness of the dungeon's history, so there isn't a ton going on for an emotional throughline. Not a huge deal, though. Maybe Jean is going to lay down the exposition hammer once they get a chance to breathe.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
The light novel has over 20 volumes and I believe the web novel was recently finished too. We got content for years. Hopefully S3 comes faster then S2 came.

Yea as far as directing goes, putting the flashback right after the intro and before the fight was a weird choice. Honestly could have done with the whole thing together where it was the second time. But overall, the show is fun.

Fran being put through the blender in these fights one after the other.
29
u/KumaKumaGambler 1d ago
The difficulty level of the floor bosses spiked exponentially.
In the previous episode, it took about a quarter of an episode to defeat the undead spear lady.
This time round, it was almost a full episode of combat against the legendary skeleton dark knight.
Defeating the final boss of the dungeon should give us closure to the story of the diary's author too right?
9
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 1d ago
Defeating the final boss of the dungeon should give us closure to the story of the diary's author too right?
Probably, but I don't think that they will be beating the final boss anytime soon though. Based on the OP and this season's key visual, it seems like the whole 12 episodes will be based around this.
12
u/misteryk 1d ago
based on the OP there will be another arc at the sea with new characters so they can't sit in the dungeon for the whole season
5
u/mischievous_shota 20h ago
Yeah, we're already at the final boss fight at episode three. They're not going to devote ten whole episodes to this. If I had to guess, the boss fight will be the next episode, and the next episode will wrap up everything to do with this dungeon.
6
u/Boshwa 21h ago
I give it like, one or two episodes of this arc
3
u/JMEEKER86 7h ago
Well we just witnessed a full episode fight, so another full episode of fighting plus a fully episode of backstory and narrative closure makes sense, although the narrative elements may well be interspersed within the battle.
5
u/Hot-Log6283 19h ago
Based on the OP and this season's key visual
Nah you can't based it on the OP if it's anything like last season where the number of characters/visual in the OP keep changing based on where they were in the story, i.e that greater demon.
27
u/epicfail1994 1d ago edited 1d ago
Fran is such a badass/tough kitten, shrugging off losing limbs like that and just spitting up blood then going back to the fight
Fight choreography and music was great as usual.
Fran and teacher working together as always was great too.
And the fact that Fran just powers through and basically breaks her arms to do that double finisher? She’s such a little badass.
The fight in this episode is a huge part of why I love the characters so much (besides Fran being so friggin adorable of course) and why this is one of my favorite isekai
Also, soon we’ll have even MORE meat gifs on top of the ones from season 1.
Edit: going from the end to the ED was such a tonal shift, lmao.

People should recognize how talented of a studio is C2C is. The fact is this season looks as good as it is. Makes me wonder what is in store for SLF S3.
Since that series is the number 1 priority for C2C at the moment.

Yeah they have great people and (probably) great schedule. Both seasons of Shangri La were 2 cours and I never felt like there were bad episodes in animation department. What's more, they really locked in for major boss fights, some of them are my absolute favorite of anything really.

Fran is pretty much this season's Alicia Glenfall (Clevatess) and honestly, I'm still catching my breath from that amazing battle! I was worried cause it had to live up to what was already an amazing sword/spear fight from the last episode, but this one exceeded it TENFOLD!
This story honestly a borderline dark fantasy, and I can appreciate that. The brutality was something else and, yeah, I know she's gonna get healed by either Shishou or Jean, but she still has to feel her bones breaking and muscles tearing! They only BARELY got by with that one. Really felt like a Dark Soul fight!
10/10; amazing!
27
u/JoeyTheNekoGuy 1d ago
dude that was an intense fight with amazing animation and now we got a battle against a dungeon master worthy of a season finale? sweet.
24
u/deynyel 1d ago
Damn, they cooked with this fight again. The 9th Floor Sentry was way stronger than expected and really put Fran through the wringer. That fight alone took pretty much everything they had, and now they have to deal with the Dungeon Master and his minions? BRUH. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Jean and Stefan were cooking up in the previous episode.
13
u/tapdancinghellspawn 23h ago
Fran is such an adorable character that it's easy to forget how badass she is. Still, watching her get torn apart hurts more than watching other characters from other anime getting torn. I think I speak for most of us here when I say, Leave our kitty alone.

NGL, those were some great fight animations! :D
And poor Frany ... she had to tank SO MUCH DAMAGE! :O
Shisho was required to have insta-max heal on speed dial, those were some brutal hits. Even their Ult puts punishment on little Frans body ...

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 1d ago
Skeleton Knight proved to be the toughest opponent that Fran faced so far. Seeing Fran's limbs being tore off and Shisho's frantically trying to heal her was hard to watch. And the skeleton knight's potential release after seeing his companion skeleton horse dead.. what a buff that was !
But Fran and Shisho's impact slash coupled with the telekinesis was finally able to defeat the Knight. Having curry with monster karaage after a hard fought win has to be delicious. Yasuharu Takanashi's background score elevates the fight to greater levels. C2C really does a spectacular job this season with the animation.
I just can't get enough of the ed by Hanabie. ❤️🔥❤️🔥

Man, that was a tough battle against the skelly knight. Fran took a real beating before finally slicing the mfer’s head in two. This level 10 boss is like 10x stronger at least and it’s summoned 6 dudes the same strength as the skelly knight. Really keen to see how Fran and Sword Dad do against this thing. They can’t escape either so it’s do or die…
3
u/Rooby_VTuber 23h ago
Now that was a proper boss battle, the damage it kept on inflicting to Fran was fatal if she didn't have someone to use healing magic on her.
This Lich is going to be an even tougher encounter by the looks of it, I thought everyone did die for a second but it was a mental attack which is scary on it's own.

What a damn good fight that was, congrats to producers. Now I am actually sad that this show isn't getting the attention it deserves.

The combat is really great. The additional details they put into how hard Fran is getting hit (like the damage to her limbs) really elevates it.

Dang, after all that hard fighting, you'd think Shishou would have the sense not to skimp on the curry...
Give our poor cat-girl a break, will ya, Shishou???
Man, gotta say though - this season is hitting a lot harder than season 1 so far. Gives me something to look forward to on a Wednesday!

Fran and Teacher's teamwork never gets old. Really happy season 2 is keeping the fights this fun to watch week to week.

This episode was straight fire! I already loved season one, but this show just became a MUST-WATCH.
Also, you can’t just turn your show into Berserk without warning somebody! Season one was dark, but this season got REAL dark. Plus, there are homages to Berserk all over the place.

That fight was brutal, Fran died like 4-5 times even more if you don’t count the black cat armor nullifying all the instant death procs.

Fran's limbs tearing apart as she parried the Dungeon Guardian's blade was a brutal sight. So it's mind-boggling to think that the Dungeon Master has teleported the party into an inescapable boss fight with him!
Between the summons, and his mental attacks. This battle is already off to a dire start!

Our hard working little murder kitten!
Fran is the best!
And loving the adaptation so far, with so many letdowns with other shows, this one is really knocking it out of the park!

Why is the animation and choreography so good? I mean, if its 90% of the anime it has to be, but still.
While the pure 3D / CGI models stand out extremely badly (the zombies at the end look like shit), the blending of 2D and 3D during the fights is very well done.
Going a bit on a off-topic rant here, but last month we had Bookworm being absolute shit at their major fight scenes. Can Studio Wit borrow whoever does these fights for an episode or two for their next season of Bookworm?

They're pouring so much love into this, big props to the animators.
Here I thought budget-kun would start to suffer after last week, but it's still going strong. Looks like they have every intent to keep this quality throughout the entire season.

Brutal fight, but that dungeon boss clearly never has heard of the Conservation of Ninjutsu.

I mean, he's a summoner/support. Mapped out the dungeon, removed all the traps, got them to the island in the first place, held the knight down using whatever those hands from the ground were, Stefan handled a bunch of undead and oneshot the wraiths. He also provided information on the skills and sent Stefan on an important mission that's obviously going to come in handy later since it's impossible to retreat.
We also know he has been in this dungeon before and wasn't able to clear it, his magic and summons can't beat the knight, so what do you expect him to do this far in lol. He enlisted the help of Fran+Teacher for a reason.
Not gonna lie, you remind me of the party members of a "kicked out of the hero's party" anime when the dude getting kicked out handled like 90% of the logistics lol.

The anime didn't mention it (although It DID show it) but the Skeleton Knight was so resistant to magic that none of Jean's spells could scratch it, they barely serve as a distraction (the thing even shrugged off a High Undead purification spell)
And we saw that if the knight turned his attention on Jean, he's fucked.

He did provide transportation. While sword dad can fly Fran she uses too much mana to get there. Also his summons do all the trap location and support jobs.

The subs are so unnecessarily liberal that it's distracting. You can really tell what was added by the translator as a means of spicing up the dialogue for the sake of it, like all the cringey "bone" puns. Surprised more people haven't made an issue of it.
