What to Watch? New to Anime: What to Watch? (I liked Konosuba)

• Upvotes

Hey. I don't watch anime that much. I watched Bleach as a kid, love Naruto, but that's about it. I recently started watching Konosuba and I do really enjoy it for some reason I can't really specify. At first I thought parts of it, the sexual ones, were cringy but it seems to be better as the series goes on. I enjoy the relationship they have with each other, companionship. I don't really care about the setting (if it's fantasy or anything else). I don't want anything too heavy, just something fun. I am thinking of watching Re:zero next but I heard it can be heavy with it's themes.

Anyway, any anime recomendations are very welcome. :)

Discussion Bleach: Is Ichigo Really Using Shinigami Powers, or Are His Quincy and Hollow Powers Imitating Shinigami? [Discussion] Spoiler

• Upvotes

Ichigo inherited his bloodlines from both a Quincy and a noble Shinigami clan. He is essentially a hybrid. The reason he has Hollow powers is that he is a Fullbringer. His mother was infected by White, and the infection was continuously suppressed during her pregnancy. Hence, she was technically under attack during her pregnancy, which is how Ichigo acquired his Hollow powers.

When Rukia passed her powers to him at the beginning, Ichigo's balanced Quincy-Shinigami-Hollow vessel was stimulated by Shinigami power (Rukia's power). This created an imbalance, with Shinigami power dominating at that time. At the same time, Rukia's strong, developed spirit influenced Ichigo's soul and appearance. This led to Ichigo's soul appearing in Shinigami clothes, with predominantly Shinigami powers as his power source. Similarly, due to Rukia's strong influence, the shape of his sword became a giant version of hers.

However, the sword spirit inside was Ichigo's. The sword's shape was not due to Rukia, but the reason he was able to manifest his sword is that it wasn't a Shinigami sword; it was a Resurrección sword. Arrancar seal their bodies and create swords out of their own bodies. Hence, Ichigo was holding his sealed true body, which took the shape of Rukia's sword.

The reason this happened is what I am trying to explore. Could it be that:

  1. His Fullbringer powers mutated his Shinigami powers into a Resurrección-type Shikai and Bankai?
  2. The White infection was special. Even though it was suppressed, it had already changed Ichigo's mother's biology, making her half Quincy and half Hollow. Hence, Ichigo is not just a Quincy-Shinigami-Fullbringer but a Hollow-Quincy-Shinigami-Fullbringer. Therefore, his Hollow and Shinigami powers mutated each other, creating a Bankai that works like a Resurrección, which also has a sword spirit.

Anyway, when Ichigo's fist transforms, he gets an appearance and sword shape due to Rukia's Shinigami influence. Yet the physical sword he is holding is his Resurrección sword, with his own sword spirit inside it. The sword contains both of his powers: Quincy and Hollow.

At that time, his main source of power was Shinigami. We did not see much Hollow influence in him because his Shinigami and Hollow powers had mixed with each other. Therefore, whether he used Shinigami or Hollow power, the end result would be the same.

However, his Quincy powers, which are antithetical to the other powers because it disturb the balance of the world, did not mutate. Because two other powers were in synergy, the Quincy powers, which were the outlier in this situation, were being suppressed. This could have stimulated it to fight back, limiting the Reishi Ichigo could produce and control.

Alternatively, due to the mixing of powers, just as Shinigami power transformed Resurrección into a sword spirit, it may also have transformed Quincy power into a sword spirit. Hence, the Quincy spirit gained sentience and tried to follow the behavioural patterns instilled in it by:

a) Ichigo's mother, who did not want Ichigo to fight and get hurt.

b) Yhwach, its progenitor, who did not want to be suppressed or forgotten (aka his son abandoned son of god trauma), like Ichigo's real Quincy power, and therefore tried to fight against the suppression of the Shinigami and Hollow powers.

Later, we see Byakuya destroy Ichigo's Shinigami spiritual pressure points. I believe this means Ichigo can no longer use his Shinigami powers as a Shinigami. In other words, he is still a Hollow-Quincy-Shinigami-Fullbringer at the source, but the outlet that allowed him to use his spiritual power as a Shinigami is broken, so he needs to change the outlet.

This is where Kisuke comes in. He makes Ichigo turn into a Hollow to regain his powers. Ichigo retains the Shinigami clothes due to Rukia's earlier influence, but his sword looks more like a Resurrección, with a sword spirit inside it. However, the power outlet he is using is now his Hollow side.

A simple way to think about it is that Ichigo is a car with diesel and petrol engines. One engine breaks, so he has to use the other.

As a result, his Shinigami powers become nonexistent as an active source, while his Hollow powers grow and once again create an imbalance. With his Shinigami power no longer functioning as an active source, his Quincy power also becomes more prominent. As I said, Quincy powers are antithetical to the other powers in Bleach. If they are passively aggressive towards Shinigami powers, they are even more directly opposed to Hollow powers. Hence, in the Soul Society arc, we see more reactions from both the Hollow and Quincy sides, with each trying to suppress the other. At the same time, both sides still want Ichigo to survive, so they help him when necessary.

Later, Ichigo finds a balance between his Hollow and Quincy sides. His Shinigami outlet is still broken, but his Shinigami power continues to exist as part of the mixture of Shinigami and Hollow powers, with the addition of Quincy power. This balance allows Ichigo to defeat Aizen.

Mugetsu, at that point, sacrifices all of his powers: Shinigami, Quincy, and Hollow.

Hence, Ichigo loses his spiritual energy and can no longer see souls. However, through his Fullbring training, he awakens his Fullbring powers.

From the time Uryū lost his Quincy powers and regained them, we know that a Quincy must be physically and mentally exhausted, with their Reishi reserves fully drained. When they are in that state, a spiritual arrow pierces a specific point in their body next to the heart, and they regain their abilities.

And that is what I believe happened to Ichigo. Once he mastered his Fullbring powers, his power was taken away, draining whatever Reishi reserves he had left and exhausting him physically and mentally. Then he was pierced by a spiritual sword near his heart.

For me, that is the moment Ichigo awakened as a Quincy. His appearance was once again the result of two influences: Rukia's earlier influence, or the Reishi contained in the spiritual sword that combined the spiritual energy of the captains, influenced the appearance of Ichigo's soul, which was essentially a blank slate at that point, giving him a new Shinigami-like appearance.

The manifestation of his new sword is tricky. There are two possibilities:

  1. His sword is a manifestation of his enhanced Fullbring powers due to a Shinigami energy power-up. Just as other Fullbringers awakened their powers after absorbing Ichigo's Shinigami power, Ichigo's body, now awakened as a Quincy but still meeting the requirements for Fullbring, could have awakened his Fullbring powers again, this time upgraded to function like Shikai and Bankai.
  2. As he awakened as a Quincy, his Shinigami and Hollow powers were also reawakened. Hence, he obtained his Resurrección with a sword spirit inside it. But now, his car engine runs not on diesel or petrol, but on jet fuel.

Therefore, Ichigo is now a Quincy who uses Quincy energy as his source of fighting power. His appearance is due to the stronger spiritual energy of the captains influencing the appearance of his soul, and his new Asauchi contains the spirits of his Quincy and Hollow powers.

To say it again, Ichigo has only the appearance of a Shinigami who has swords representing his Quincy and Hollow forms, but the source of his energy is Quincy.

P.S. (Shinigami is nothing but a normal soul with Asauchi )

Help Trying to find an isekai anime where the MC asks two women for survival advice through an on-screen forum

I watched episode 1 recently but can’t remember the title. A male MC appears alone in a forest and uses a chat/forum that pops up on screen to ask things like how to kill monsters and whether a fruit is safe to eat.

Two women seem to help him through it. One looks like a dark witch or demon queen, while the other looks more like a human hero. I think one of them lends him a weapon, and items might be transferable through the forum.

I’m not sure when the anime originally came out. Does anyone recognise it?

Help Looking for an anime/manga

Alright so the plot is going to be vague however the premise was: the main character was either isekai'd or stuck in a hard game. He spawns in and kills the in-game child hood best friends brother thinking its just a game, gets arrested and befriends the masochist jailor, then fights off a goblin invasion getting fast movement boots.

Does anyone know this anime? I finally have down time and would love to read the Manga, as when I watched it, I had to cram and never bookmarked it.

Discussion Favorite iyashikei anime? Or just cozy anime in general?

Realized i kinda love this typa shit. Started with restaurant to another world, farming life in another world, delicious in dungeon, campfire cooking in another world. I guess a lot of them seem to be isekai but are pretty chill (and often the main character is invincible so it’s less stressful i suppose). I’ve heard smoking behind the supermarket with you is good. Thanks yall.

recently started my first anime and i’m really enjoying it. i decided to watch it dubbed as I thought it would be easier for me to understand the story. i kept the captions on as a safety net, but now im just completely confused as to where i should be looking. animation only? captions most of the time? or should i turn the captions off completely? any help would be appreciated greatly. I feel naturally drawn to read the text, but it also helps me understand what is going on and i’m torn. thanks!

What to Watch? Looking for anime recommendations based on my taste

Hey everyone! I’m looking for some new anime recommendations.
Here are some anime I’ve watched and my thoughts on them:
Hunter x Hunter – Loved Kite and the character with the smoking pipe. I really enjoyed the story and characters.
Attack on Titan – Watched seasons 1–3 and really liked it, but I still need to finish season 4.
Chainsaw Man – Finished it and enjoyed it.
Demon Slayer – Finished all the currently released episodes.
Blue Lock – Finished it and really enjoyed the competitive atmosphere and hype moments.
Hell’s Paradise – Watched it and liked it.
86 – Finished it, but it was just okay for me.
One Piece – Currently watching it, and I’m already hooked. I love how exciting it is.
I’m mainly looking for anime with great characters, an engaging story, hype moments, and good action. I prefer shows that grab my attention early and keep me wanting to watch the next episode. I don’t mind longer anime if they’re worth it.
What would you recommend based on my taste? Both popular and underrated anime are welcome!

Discussion Why did a bunch of anime, around 2008, include warnings about watching anime in a well-lit room?

I've been working my way through Gin Tama, and I'm in the 100s, episode-wise which were airing in 2008. And they all include on-screen warnings about watching TV in a well-lit room. The episodes before about number 100 didn't have that warning. In addition, the first season of Hayate No Gotoku included a similar warning, and that was airing between 2008 and 2009. I'm well aware of the Pokemon seizure incident, but that was in 1997, and there were plenty of anime that aired between then and 2008 that didn't have that warning.

What to Watch? What anime should I watch?

I just watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners which is the first anime I've watched fully. I once binged the first half of Death Note a few years ago and I burned myself out, so I'm about to start watching it again slowly.

Apart from these, what would suit me best to watch next? I'd prefer to watch a shorter series as I don't want to commit to lots of seasons. For context, my favourite TV shows are BoJack Horseman, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, House, Ted Lasso, HIMYM and Hannibal. My favourite movies are Fight Club, Interstellar, The Godfather, Good Will Hunting, Taxi Driver, Shutter Island, The Silence of the Lambs and Pulp Fiction.

Discussion There have been some good girlfriend wish fulfilment shows lately.

It's a pretty standard premise for an anime. "What if this, or these, super hot girl(s) were super into you, the quiet nerdy guy?". But I just finished Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku, and that one really rose above its base premise, because the characters were really a lot of fun to spend time with. I actually did kind of buy that those two girls could become best friends, or more with the main characeter. And Oh Boy Was I Wrong About Her, from last season was pretty enjoyable, even if it didn't really resolve anything at all. I've always had a soft spot for these types of romances, having been a quiet nerdy kid myself. And honestly, I think they've been getting better as time goes on

Review [Review/Thoughts] Mushoku Tensei (up to the end of Season 3 part 1) Spoiler

So I have been watching Mushoku Tensei in Japanese alongside Yurizono Eru's watchalongs, and also jumping into the novels for a bit, and I think I have reflected enough to share some in-depth thoughts somewhere. I thought this subreddit might be a good place to start a discussion post.

I had some preconceived thoughts before jumping into this series, because of learning stuff such as:

- Rudy being an irredeemable pervert, because he was fapping to loli lewds in his past life on the day of his parents' funeral (it seemed that he fapped to voyeuristic material of his niece in some deleted chapter of the web novel? Which uh, does make his deviant perversion seem even worse than simple loli lewds). And this deviant perversion remained a deeply rooted part of his personality when he reincarnated to his second life.

- Rudy being a more-than-standard emotionally weak protagonist, which led to him making very anger-inducing decisions (how he is easily swayed to make the worst decisions possible? Before watching the series, I saw a lot of stuff about him cheating whenever he falls into severe despair for example).

- Rudy's past life appearance being consistently depicted and shoved in the viewers' faces whenever his inner self converses with that man god. Normally other Isekai series does not do this, other Isekai would simply treat their protagonists' past life as as an interesting piece of background info before simply moving on, so this part of Mushoku Tensei consistently reminding viewers of Rudy's past life appearance seemed to turn some viewers off.

If there was one thing I would say about my thoughts that changed, it's that I feel pity? or it should be closer to empathy for Rudy now.

ー

Rudy's past life was a trainwreck, he tried to save a fellow classmate from bullying, but in return, he became the target instead. One of the worse parts of his school pulling was him being hung at the front of the school gate naked, and because of that, photos of him circulated around social media that made fun of his small dick, and this made it on TV news. Along with other comments in the watchalong, I agreed that it was no surprise that he turned hikikomori and shut himself, and this was just him starting starting his first year of high school. I always wondered how his deviant perversion became so twisted that the author would write that deleted chapter, and I figured it was because of this event. When everyone was reflecting on the earlier episodes together, the conclusion we reached is that "ejaculation from fapping feels good, it temporarily makes you forget all bad things currently happening in your life." People often forget that sexual stuff in itself is like drugs, doing it can help you forget the bad things that is happening in your life, and this is a universal thing both in fiction and reality.

But to his second life with his memories intact, how Rudy was emitting all this perversion as a toddler was, in simplest terms, creepy lmfao (how he looked at his mother's breasts when being breastfed, and looking at all the women in the household with lewd eyes). After reading the novels of what the anime covered and realizing how much the anime condensed it, at first it was easy for me to forget/overlook a lot of things and connect the dots. What really reminded me how severe Rudy's trauma as a shut-in hikikomori was when Rudy was brought outside with Roxy holding his hand. And after the first season, the consensus of everyone from Yurizono Eri's livestreams was that Rudy relies on perversion to express himself. It seems from interviews with readers, the author has once said that Rudy's perversion stem from his Greyrat bloodline, but it can be said that you can't deny a big part of it is also due to his past life trauma, and from it how he learned to express himself with perversion (the perversion that carried his psychological state when figuring how to cope with his dark situation in his past life).

Ah, but his perverted actions in his childhood were still deviant, like wanting to look under Eris's clothes while she was asleep was very improper on his part and he deserved the Eris punch. But I also realized that all of his perverted actions were also always out of pure sexual curiosity. Since people often forget, he became emotionally stunted from a high school freshman, so at least I find it understanding even if it was very improper to do to any maiden.

...

After fully realizing many of these points of Rudy's past life and personality, a lot of the stuff regarding Rudy that happens in season 2 and season 3 make a whole lot more sense.

- Like how when Rudy wholeheartedly accepted Eris and they slept together. The act of sex has always been a universal way to express romantic affection between couples, but it is doubly so for Rudy that expresses himself through his perversion. When Eris left, Rudy developed ED. That is not a normal reaction to being stood up by his first girlfriend he made from both his past and current life. Him crying in tears was one thing, but the discussion on this topic also veered to how Rudy wanted to express how much he loves Eris through his ability to sexually satisfy Eris, but he misunderstood that he wasn't good enough, hence losing complete confidence in his ability in sex and developed ED.

This is also a reason why Rudy attempted suicide after Sara broke off her relationship with Rudy. It is Sara breaking off her relationship with him that triggered it, but the cause was the helplessness of being unable to express his feelings through sex to Sara that left him depressed and wanting to drink until he's dead drunk.

- And also the situation with Roxy. Roxy was told that to pull men out of despair, one of the surefire methods is to slept with them. And coincidentally, it overlapped with Rudy's ways to cope: sex. Rudy was able to be pulled from his severe despairing state with Roxy's sacrifice (although not with fully pure intentions). I find this particular event one of my favorite moments of the series, because despite Roxy wanting to keep it as a one night fling, Rudy did two things right that earned some respect from me: Him keeping in mind that he should ask for Sylphy's permission first, and that he had the ability to take responsibility for those that are sacrificing themselves for his wellbeing.

It really felt that the aim of season two was to put Rudy through a series of coming-of-age events that he never experienced in his past life, and by the end, he was able to mature away from his vulgar perversion to a more decent young adult, and this is because of both Roxy and Sylphy supporting him by his side. His inner thoughts would still often stray to something perverted with the unreliable narration, but through his actions, the series has shown him to be much more... gentlemenly and upfront(?). It seems that because of these changes, Rudy has steadily been learning to be more open with his feelings of happiness and expressing it through sex with Roxy and Sylphy.

- The above points, however, leads to issues that pop up in season three. In what others call the dark timeline, Rudy loses Roxy, sleeps with prostitutes, and falls into a spiral of self-destruction. It's because of a long list of series of events that led to this point that Rudy now had a heavy reliance on both Roxy and Sylphy's existences, they were his source of happiness he earned himself and never attained in his past life. With the topic veering to reasons why Rudy slept with the prostitute, the consensus was that Rudy couldn't cope with the despair from losing Roxy, so he slept with prostitutes. And since he loved Sylphy deeply as well, he didn't want to "use his source of happiness" to cope with his despair, which was why Rudy resorted to prostitutes, which were essentially strangers to him and he can be as rough as he wants when having coping sex (if I were to better describe) with them. This seemed to be one of the top moments that angered viewers, but now that I have seen and read up this point, I find it difficult to completely hate Rudy even if the decisions in the dark timeline were irredeemably self-destructive.

ー

From reaching this point in the series, I have realized many more things about the series now. And this makes me wonder about how the criticism from English speakers (posting on X for example), that hyperfocus on Rudy because of his perverse character, now seem more... exaggerated than I initially thought? At least, after learning a lot about the series, a lot of the criticism seem somewhat ridiculous.

Like how "he is a 34 year old man in a child's body, acting on deviant perversion to other characters around him;" I could confidently argue that "this is a emotionally stunted high school freshman" so he still retains his sexual curiosity. And although it's improper deviancy, Rudy is acting on both harmless and pure sexual curiosity, and it is to all characters regardless of age (his own Mother, Eris's mother, Ghislaine, the beastkin sisters at the academy, the prostitutes, etc). Treating Rudy as a consistently big pervert is a irrevocable fact and that part can deserve its own slander and memes, but some English speakers seem to want to treat him as a PDF rapist(?) for some reason despite these points laid out. The conclusion I came to is that viewers are finding it difficult to separate past life Rudy and current Rudy as two separate entities at this point in time, and many viewers seem to take the unreliable narration in the series too seriously and literally, despite the selling point of this series is a reincarnation/second chance story with a protagonist coping with a severe past life trauma and the perversion that developed from it.

...

But eh, I guess you can't make everyone happy? I did notice that there has also been a trend where some overseas fans are simply not big fans of sexual content in general, especially adult loli content, due to both religious beliefs(?) and cultural differences (Japan has a huge love for moefication and is a core concept in anime, which is why loli also exist in fiction), so... there is that. A rude thought did come to mind, making me wonder if viewers with these sort of criticism are lacking... literature comprehension? A lot of contextual comprehension and depiction of conflicting character perceptions seem very important in this series (there are a whole lot of unreliable narrations), so if viewers are unable to comprehend why certain events happen and why certain characters exist, act, and change in certain ways, that would simply be unfortunate.

This is the end, and this is all the thoughts I wanted to share in this post and let out to the internet. I'll post this same post in another place so I can read different opinions from different places. If you read to this point, then thank you for reading to this point. If there are any comments that require a reply from me, I'll drop a reply.

And one last thing to fellow Japanese fans and multilingual fans learning Japanese: please consider watching Yurizono Eru's watchalongs as the vtuber does in-depth aftertalks and discussions after every couple episodes. I highly recommend investing time in listening to her watchalong archives if you are a fan of Mushoku Tensei.

Disclaimer: I hope this post does not cause discussions to devolve into a sea of flames with everyone hurling personal insults at each other. I made sure to write this post as humble as possible, so you too please be civil in this discussion.
