Mokona is an adorable little goober lol

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Just continuing to mess with Presea's things while the Magic Knights suffer for it's mischief and Presea is none the wiser lol.

8

u/Frostbitten_Moose 23h ago

Hell, she even starts laying into 'im as he's still there screwing with her papers only to see what her trap actually caught and then completely forgets he exists.

24

u/namizo88 1d ago

I'm glad they kept Presea's sadistic side

21

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Girl didn't care who she got to torture, she's just in it for love of the game.

24

u/NanDemoKnaives 1d ago

You can't even say Alcyone was caught by surprise, she just let Hikaru use her spell.

21

u/cupperoni https://anilist.co/user/cupcakey 23h ago

Her global cooldown wasn't ready yet lol :D

9

u/Frostbitten_Moose 23h ago

Nah, this is old school so no cooldowns yet. But talking has always been a free action.

6

u/cupperoni https://anilist.co/user/cupcakey 22h ago

To think I had EverQuest in my head when I commented and now I'm realizing that was still a few years after. gd I'm old as fuck now.

God, I'm already loving this show so much. It feels so fantastical and magical. They're not skimping out on the fight scenes either. They look really nice.

Edit: It's weird, I can read above and below me rn are two comments talking about how disappointing the OP and ED are and how they massacred... whatever, idk. Surprising. I loved the OP and the ED was just incrediblly immersive for me.

15

u/Frontier246 1d ago

And the OST really helps capture that high fantasy vibe.

10

u/XsStreamMonsterX 15h ago

Because they're always going to be compared to the originals, and "Yuzurenai Negai" (which we heard last week) is a generational anthem of an OP.

9

u/zackphoenix123 15h ago

Yeah... I mean, I don't even disagree with the feeling that the OG OP is an absolute powerhouse that is very hard to top, I mentioned as much myself, but there's a difference between "it doesn't have that same oomph as the original", and saying it was a massacre or spectacularly disappointing (ofc, it's exaggeratory but still) when there's so much good that the new OP offers.

I guess it's just a shame for me. The visuals are fantastic, dare I say stronger than the original, and the song itself still carries a magical feel. It's not head bopping hype like the OG, but it still had a lot of sauce.

Though, y'know, I'm more surprised by the reception toward the ED cause I think I might like it more than the OP. I was at awe watching it. Both the OP and ED aren't as energetic as the OGs, but I will say, at least for the ED, that was the most emotional I got across all four credits so far. Ah, I haven't watched Rayearth S2 yet, so idk if they change OP/ED there.

Hopefully in a couple of years, people will see this as a collection of really strong OP and EDs rather than just dunking on the remake.

4

u/urwelcome971620 21h ago

I have the OP on repeat and the ED is a cool opposite vibe.

6

u/Oden_sama__ 17h ago

yeah same, they're both peak

0

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

OP is bearable. ED is just sleep inducing. Not even joking. I want the true RHYTHM of Rayearth to return.

13

u/No-Win-8949 1d ago

Pure nostalgia is driving my watch of this anime right now.

13

u/runevault 23h ago

Random thoughts.

Sol (aka Sun) being the title for the bad guy is really funny. Also Presea having a spear in a bunch of her fantasies about torturing people was interesting since she's not carrying one right now. And man Arrow of flame looked sick (also the track playing during that sequence was really good).

Really anxious for the mecha (err rune gods) to show up so we can see them in action in episode. The mecha anime this season are a fascinating batch so have to fully see how this one fits in once those come into play.

27

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1d ago

Stitches!

I'm definitely using this image of the girls in their full armour and the Rune Gods as a wallpaper. The new OP is definitely gonna take some getting used to, though. Otome no Tsurugi/Maiden's Sword by Toaka is still a pretty good OP, but Naomi Tamura's Yuzurenai Negai is just too iconic.

Fuu comparing their situation with Alcyone to an RPG and how she's too challenging as a first encounter was pretty damn funny. Also, I love that after Umi tells Hikaru it's dangerous to stand up, Fuu butts in that sitting or standing doesn't really change their current level of danger. xD

It turns out Alcyone is a perfect first encounter for the girls since Hikaru's Arrow of Flame managed to one-shot the fuck out of her! To be fair to Alcyone, she was underestimating them and was clearly caught off guard.

So I think it's pretty clear at this point that Hikaru has a natural affinity with animals. She did the same thing with Clef's fish summon last episode, and we learn that she has a family pet that she treats like a brother.

Umi saying it's okay to forget their manners a little since they're in another world was pretty funny. This girl has clearly been given the chance to let loose, and she's definitely taking it. xD

We finally get to meet Mokona! Even if you've never seen MKR before, he should be familiar if you've seen xxxHOLIC or Tsubasa Chronicles. This little bugger is so goddamn cute. My sister still has her Mokona plushie to this day.

And we also finally get to meet Presea! Her sadism and ojou-sama laughter are just perfect. I love how upset Presea is at Mokona for ruining her papers and then the two of them started dancing together while thinking about what she should do with the girls. xD

Well took a while for Presea to realize that the girls couldn't have broken in, but I'm glad she finally realized that the only reason they could open the door is because they're exactly who she's been waiting for.

19

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I love how Fuu is so utterly blase about everything. Scantily-clad lady trying to kill us? Mid-boss showing up in the game early. Umi needs her cheeks pinched? Why not just stretch them for all their worth. Technically intruding in someones' home? May as well inspect everything like a good RPG protagonist.

It's only been barely a few hours in and our Heroines have defeated their first baddie, rode a gryphon, AND gotten locked up for crimes they technically did and did not commit!

10

u/MrsLucienLachance https://anilist.co/user/tribble 18h ago

I am praying this remake prompts some glorious fanart of Mokona and Brushbuddy hanging out. It would improve my life.

6

u/gvon89 https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 15h ago

Thats a dynamic duo right there

As a still green xxxHolic/Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle fan, seeing mokona absolutely brought me joy

5

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

I always thought Hikari is a SHE. Well, for obvious reasons, but still.

3

u/Genocide_Angel16304 16h ago

Mokona looks like an accountant reviewing tax returns with those papers.

2

u/TnAdct1 16h ago

When watching the episode at Otakon, I was concerned that the episode was going to end right at the part where Mokona is introduced, as its first appearance was the moment that was waiting for (with a lot of people also cheering when he finally appears).

10

u/ernie2492 23h ago

So far we got the Autozam Clef, Mitsubishi Emeraude, Subaru SVX, Nissan Presea, and a certain Italian coachbuilder in the world of the Nissan Cefiro

9

u/Beowolf_0 22h ago

The new OP and ED are still nice on their own, which is good.

Hikaru is the bravest among the three but also is the softest, which is rare for a Red. Fuu is just too ditzy for an ojou I guess, with all those talks over games? And Umi is just rash. We're seeing them warming up to each other as a team by now, that said I wonder how long would they stay after they receive their weapon.

12

u/zackphoenix123 22h ago

I think Umi is meant to be the spoiled Ojou who is losing her mind over bieng in such an unfamiliar environment, while Fuu is the bookworm who is familiar with all these tropes already.

1

u/Xical 17m ago

Well, our girls are from an age where most of those tropes were still in formation.

And Fuu is not ditzy, she is a little blunt, a book smart state the obvious girl, a (only a *little) eccentric that knows about classic rpg tropes, but she is not a Shoujo romcon protagonist ditzy girl... I hope.

8

u/XsStreamMonsterX 15h ago

Since I did this for last episode, the car names in this episode are:

Technically, we heard her name mentioned last episode, but this is the where we actually first see her.

Previous characters:

6

u/chilidirigible 16h ago

I appreciate the sense of humor.

And the numerous shifts to SD.

But thinking, is that going to get us anywhere?

Cefiro is a silly place, though it does have its charms.

I really did like the banter, though it does give the impression that the episode took its time to deliver a handful of story beats. My main impression is that the interactions between the trio were well-established here.

3

u/Elimin8r https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ayeka_Jurai 13h ago

Cefiro is a silly place, though it does have its charms.

Unlike Camelot, which is also 'tis a silly place, but somehow with less charm. And more coconuts.

Man, this show gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, it just hits the nostalgia beats so far. Now, if only they'd come out with an El-Hazard remake (that didn't fail like the original eventually did), that would be something.

Also - hope you don't mind the replies. I figured I'd just let you know that your posting is not in vain.

That, and I do rather find the lack of Sky disturbing. I would think this would be her kind of show.

Ah, well, carry on, and maybe I'll see you in CDF again someday. If I ever remember to look there...

7

u/J_Linnea 23h ago

Seeing Mokona in 2026 brought a tear to my eye!

15

u/Eunuchest 1d ago

Shame, so the original OP last episode really was just a one time thing

Hikaru's fire spell looked much better than i expected

Wow, i didnt expect the Griffin to be that huge

Presea sure has a quirky personality and i also noticed that her skirt is much shorter than the trio if it wasnt for her loincloth. That's kinda ironic

11

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Presea sure has a quirky personality and i also noticed that her skirt is much shorter than the trio if it wasnt for her loincloth. That's kinda ironic

Fuu: "I've noticed that none of the women in this world seem to wear pants."

Umi: "THAT'S what you're focusing on right now!?"

9

u/Frostbitten_Moose 23h ago

Shame, so the original OP last episode really was just a one time thing

Yeah, I can't entirely blame them for getting something new. But that one was iconic.

3

u/drostan https://anilist.co/user/Drostan 22h ago

My favourite was the 2nd op, I am still holding some hopes

-2

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

Unfortunately, the new OP and ED are... less than optimal. And that's not nostalgia, that's my genre sense.

5

u/ReishWasHere 23h ago

Ok, I liked that better upon first watch than episode 1, but having rewatched episode 1 I've realised that what I really had a problem with back then was the standing around in one spot during the exposition. Everything else about that episode was decidedly well written. I don't know why I was fixated on their brief period of calm reactions as such a big problem when that bit only lasted for a couple of sentences; Maybe its simply down to how eye caching the art style of the faces is.

Anyway, I'm happy to see where this goes (and to the one who tried to hint at what's to come before reddit deleted your comment, don't worry, I'm aware of a certain development that happens later on so I know the plot itself is interesting enough to keep going).

My main take away is that having an easily exasperated character and a cool-headed and very straightforward character bouncing off each other makes for a surprisingly entertaining comedy routine. Also Presea is delightfully unserious for her role, though I feel concerned for anyone that came to her door before the apocalypse started.

7

u/shadebug 21h ago

Can we all agree that “I am the world’s greatest artisan” is not a cliffhanger?

5

u/jardex22 17h ago

I'm guessing it's the end of a chapter though.

11

u/imperialist_cat 23h ago

I jumped for the mechs and ended up loving it, even if the pace is rather slow right now. Just binged eps 1 and 2 but definitely following.

-8

u/drostan https://anilist.co/user/Drostan 22h ago

It's magic knight ray earth not escaflowne, no mecha

2

u/FriedRiceistheBest 1d ago

My dumbass thought Hikaru will shout "Fire Soul" on that scene.

8

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 1d ago

Hey, Flame Arrow is another of Rei's moves, so you weren't too far off.

3

u/FriedRiceistheBest 1d ago

Fire Soul was just memorable to me since Rei immediately cast that upon her first transformation.

2

u/namizo88 1d ago

Is Hikaru's Crystal's Rei?!

4

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Umi actually has strong 90's Sailor Mars energy.

6

u/magnumcyclonex 19h ago

I'm just here along for the ride, having never watched the 90s series. Presea reminds me of Sailor Venus. Good thing they were able to fend off Clef's student Alcyone. And Zagato makes his appearance to Clef.

4

u/BosuW 19h ago

I didn't know this had mechs!

6

u/jardex22 17h ago

Someone mentioned in last week's thread that they were featured in one of the recent Super Robot War games. They were also in the intro of the first episode as well.

1

u/suboptimal_prime73 3h ago

Hell, in one of the entries Hikaru starts bugging the cast of Getter Robo for advice on team attacks.

2

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 17h ago

I wonder if Alcyone survived that fire and the fall from the sky.

Persea is pretty great, and I swear it's not just because she doesn't seem to be wearing any pants. It's also the really big hair ponytail and the oh ho ho ho hos. It is a bit surprising however that she doesn't have drills to go along with that laugh.

5

u/dagreenman18 14h ago

It’s just so fucking 90’s and that brings my heart joy. So far they’re striking balance between nostalgia and modernity.

Which means we got 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s peak being represented this season (Ranma bleeding between the first 2 since it ran for a decade).

6

u/Calwings x3https://anilist.co/user/Calwings 23h ago edited 23h ago

I guess Souls-like games didn't exist back in the 90's. So yeah, interesting start so far. Hikaru using her magic for the first time to snipe that bitch out of the sky was cool, but her understanding what the gryphon was saying was also pretty neat. I wasn't expecting the main villain Zagato to show up in Ep2, even if it was just to warn Clef about interfering. And this new woman Presea is certainly... something. Between her hairstyle, her outfit showing off so much leg, and what appears to be a complete lack of panties, she's like a recolor of Lyn from Fire Emblem.

I assume the "Rune Gods" referred to in this episode are the 3 giant robots shown in the OP, and I'm very curious how this story will explain the existence of 3 giant robots in a fantasy world. Are they actual mecha that the girls pilot? Do they fuse with the girls and become Symphogear-style power armor for them? Or are they companions that fight alongside them like golems? I'm coming into this completely fresh with very little knowledge of what happens in this story, so I guess I'll find that out later.

3

u/Frontier246 23h ago

her outfit showing off so much leg, and what appears to be a complete lack of panties,

Also Alcyone. I'm sensing a theme here like the petticoats in the girls' skirts.

6

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

Princess Emeraude was literally voiced by Shinji Ikari (NOT a joke), so that should clue you in, lol!

On the other (unrelated) hand, the NEW Emeraude is... Himawari. What the LOL!!!

7

u/DemonWraith2500 1d ago

Fuu, that type of game exists, they're called soul-like.

Hikaru use isekai cheat skill. It's very effective.

That cage is too big for Mokona.

12

u/Frostbitten_Moose 23h ago

Fuu, that type of game exists, they're called soul-like.

Not in the 90s they didn't.

3

u/jardex22 17h ago

My dwindling supply of quarters at the arcade says otherwise.

3

u/Frostbitten_Moose 15h ago

The term you want is Nintendo Hard. Which is back when consoles still ported stuff from arcades that wanted to eat your quarters.

1

u/suboptimal_prime73 3h ago

Maybe she’s a big fan of King’s Field.

3

u/jardex22 17h ago

True, but soul-like games usually weave death into the story in some way, like the warrior being a shade or undead, so they can fight, die, and fight again. These girls only get one life, as far as we know.

2

u/Frontier246 1d ago

That cage is too big for Mokona.

Imagine it's more about the chase than the destination...

5

u/RemZeroBestGirl 18h ago

Seeing Mokona again in a modern remake is pure joy. The new OP is gorgeous too, CLAMP's designs translate really well to this style.

3

u/Cheesemacher 23h ago

I miss the song that plays in the original when she uses Flame Arrow. It's so epic

-5

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

Yeah, this one got overextended and underwhelmed. In general, I see the SAD theme of this version's songs being slow, soft, and (therefore) BORING. This is sooo NOT the REAL Rayearth in feeling, it's sad.

3

u/warjoke 17h ago

Whoever was the producer who suggested to make Yuki Kajiura in charge of the OST deserves a bonus

6

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Now that's the opening narration you would expect from a high-fantasy anime epic! And the OP is equally fitting as a beautiful and mythic theme plays out during the girls' adventures in Cefiro as they encounter allies, battle villains, and also...Mecha!

Zagato wasn't the only traitor they had to worry about...Alcyone was Guru Clef's former student, meant to be a loyal sorceress to Emeraude, and now she's out to kill the Magic Knights. Though you have to give her credit that she knows her abilities enough to not fight a battle she can't win against her mentor and prioritize completing her mission.

Good job Umi trying to keep team morale up by becoming Clef's hype-man! And Fuu who keeps a rational, stable, head that helps keep the girls on-mission.

I love how they're about to die and Fuu is only mildly bothered by how this doesn't fit with typical RPG enemy progression.

But while they don't have weapons, they DO have magic: as Hikaru unleashes FLAME ARROWS to deliver a roasted Alcyone!

Fuu, that's not pinching Umi's cheeks, that's stretching them for all they're worth! Which is adorable, mind you, but still.

Hikaru is great with animals, of both the normal and fantastical variety! She practically grew up with her dog Hikari as a brother after all! Though I felt bad for the Gryphon when the girls left, he seems to get really lonely.

Zagato has definitely mastered villain aura farming as he confronts both Clef and Emeraude for the futility of banking on the girls to revive the Rune-Gods and become the Legendary Magic Knights. But why HAS he turned to the dark side and consigned Cefiro to ruin?

Welp, if it's that easy to open Presea's (Emiri Kato!) front door, they may as well waltz in! But instead of Presea the girls find...Mokonoa (Mika Kikuchi!) an adorable ball of fluff! Less cute is the girls all getting caught in a cage!

Enter Presea! An artisan with a stellar ponytail, amazing thighs, an ojousama laugh, and who really seems to love thinking of ways to torture anyone who gets on her bad side. The girls walked into her ongoing prank war with Mokona and now have to fight accusations of being home invaders. Umi does NOT deal well with quirky girls.

But if they were able to get in, that must mean that they MUST be the Magic Knights of legend! And hopefully now the can count on Presea's help.

The ED is absolutely serene, with pretty visuals of all the cast!

6

u/Charles883 1d ago

Yeah, Zagato is TOTALLY Evil.

2

u/EmergencyEntrance 20h ago

Random thoughts over the course of the episode:

  • I like the intro card with Kajiura's score, too bad they don't actually wear those outfits. Loving how they haven't been hiding the Rune Gods since the beginning by the way.

  • camera pans down to Alcyone's breasts

  • I don't really vibe with Noto's Alcyone for some reason. On the other hand Sakura's Hikaru is PERFECT

  • Animation suddenly got a bump in quality wtf, we're suddenly getting a lot of movement during the action scenes. It's still very all over the place however, the fluid moments just make the static frames stand out more. Also would it hurt to make the characters blink a little?

  • Hikaru's Flame Arrow is a little overanimated but the OST wins

  • Zagato shows up, spouts ominous foreshadowing and leaves.

  • Zagato shows up again, spouts ominous foreshadowing and leaves again. Voice is perfect though.

  • Fuu's right, it IS like a role playing game, you can just walk into people's houses and touch stuff

  • Had to do a double take with Umi suddenly swapping position with Fuu in front of the door. Did I see it right?

  • I am SO glad they kept the chibis

  • omg it's mokona

  • PANIC

  • omg it's presea

  • the native headdress wouldn't have flown in 2026 I sorta see why they removed it from Presea's daydreaming

  • ...UMI THE GAP BETWEEN THE BARS IS WIDE ENOUGH FOR YOU TO WALK THROUGH

  • "No."

  • the amount of chibis in this sequence is insane

  • Umi's ear perking up lmao

  • either somebody messed up perspective here or Umi suddenly got BIGGER

  • again I love how they shamelessly show the Rune Gods

  • FFS I'm liking the ED sequence a lot.

I'm still not over the fact I get to see these three goobers on a screen again so my perception might be skewed, but I loved it despite the flaws. Huge step up from episode 1 in quality also, I can see why the premieres shows put on both episodes.

1

u/jardex22 17h ago

I noticed the frame shifts as well. Sometimes there's a flow to it, but other points they cut from one shot to the next. I'd assumed that they were trying to animate manga panels faithfully, or something along those lines. I haven't read the source material, so I'm not sure. It takes some getting used to, but it's not bad, I suppose.

-1

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 20h ago

Everything is at least as good, or maybe even a slight improvement... except the OSTs. Like, totally NOT.

2

u/Narvalis 17h ago

So wait a minute she was going to punish people for trespassing in her house that no one but her, the guy that made the lock and the chosen knights can get into, and somehow didn't realize who they were? I'm starting to figure out why this world is in danger. I might be on Zagato's side on this one, if people like this are the alternative.

3

u/zackphoenix123 15h ago

To be fair, I don't think most people would think "wait, you're the legendary prophecized heroes of legend!?" when they see three children just appearing inside their house. TvT. They could've sneaked in through some other stupid means.

1

u/YumiyaRakko 10h ago

I assume she thought they somehow managed to trespass rather than entering by legimate means. No one supposedly being able to enter through the door doesn’t mean one cannot enter in any other way, there is magic so one can have posibilities

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 16h ago

Hikaru is easily my favorite of the trio so far. I do wonder how much of the 90s JRPG reference modern fans recognize. This is a fun show.

Presea is definitely a silly one to say the least.

2

u/zackphoenix123 15h ago

They're all so incredibly charming, I think Umi's my favourite though!

2

u/YlfaTheForsaken 9h ago

Hold up, as a gundam girlie this series has mechs? Say no more. That's just delightful.

Also I've known the Mokona design for years, decades even, but it's from this series? Wow, legitimate anime history.

Say whatever about Alcyone, but I liked her unicorn. You don't often see pretty unicorns on the antagonist side.

Presea just casually has a cage that lowers and rises when she needs it to, what is she secretly a professional wrestler?

u/Animamask 22h ago

I never noticed, but the way they pronounce rune gods sounds like machina (as in deus ex machina). Can someone who knows Japanese say whether that's just me hearing things, a pun on some version of the Japanese words for gods and rune, or if they're actually calling them machina?

Since this will be two cours and thus more than enough to cover the story, I wonder what will be added. I think the producers mentioned that it'll adapt the complete story, it won't be a one to one adaptation. Maybe they'll expand on the lore or certain characters, or they might change certain plot points and developments from the manga that weren't well received or CLAMP themselves thought weren't so great. Or maybe they'll incorporate elements original to the first anime, like Nova, who I remember ended up quite popular with fans back in the day.

The Tokyo Mew Mew reboot for example, despite being mostly faithful, added an original episode exploring the background of the antagonists, made Kishu more vile and dowlayed his relationship with Ichigo since his behavior is way less accepted nowadays, upgraded Masaya from potato to guy with actual personality, made the final antagonist more complex, and Minto explicitly gay (while giving her more development in general) with Zakuro being implied to reciprocate.

I never noticed, but the way they pronounce rune gods sounds like machina (as in deus ex machina). Can someone who knows Japanese say whether that's just me hearing things, a pun on some version of the Japanese words for gods and rune, or if they're actually calling them machina?

They're using the term 魔神 - "witch/demon/magic god", which is read here as mashin (you might know this 'ma' from mahou, majo, maou or akuma, and this "shin" from shinto), and indeed looks to be a wordplay on 'machine'.

Bless for linking this site but I also crumbled into dust when I saw how it is formatted

Umi fainting & getting her cheeks stretched was cute & funny.

Presea & Fuu did the ojou laugh.

Presea was really thinking of eating the trio.

I love the chibi forms.

The bird looking sad when Hikaru left was cute.

Hikaru briefly had cat ears in the cage.

It's gonna be hard to decide whether Umi or Presea is best girl. Still early days yet but hopefully tings will develop a little more uickly after next episode.

Im sorry but the new animation and the weird color scheme changes on certain characters I loathe it… it looks so bad… also had to re watch the original to be sure, but the new animation looks sloppy, inconsistent and its missing a lot of the original details and magic that made the art style so unforgettable… specially the armors and faces… nostalgia aside, its turning out to be such a let down…

Well, those are spectacularly disappointing OP and ED songs. Yikes.

I'm wondering whether you are downvoted by people who genuinely like slower and calmer songs, or by people who downvote anyone for daring to have a justifiable nostalgia taste sense, lol?

Listens OP, ED. Cries in "look how they massacred my boy".

I think both are fire.

Yeah, sadly. Rayearth feels associated with ACCCSHON, and these OSTs are... a lullaby and a whine. Lol.
