AITA Quarterly Open Forum Oct - Dec 2026

Keep things Civil! Rules still apply.

Greetings Assholes!!! Happy All the Holidays between now and January 2027!! Way too many to list.

This quarter, we are going to go over Rule 3 - No Violence. A topic that’s dear to my heart and one that covers so many different scenarios.

The very heart of this rule is “Do not even mention violence”. Very simple on the surface, very complicated once you dive down. It sometimes seems like we are being too specific/granular on what constitutes violence - we get that. But violence tends to breed violence, so the most benign post/comment can spiral into some off the charts shit.

The violence rule break is often the result of a soft topic going off the rails. Example: Someone is put out by their partner picking food off of their plate. What we see: “stab them with your fork, that’ll teach them (assault)!” Or, someone is stealing lunches out of the break room - “just put some hot shit in there, that’ll teach them (poison/assault)” Or, the kid goes around hitting people (assault) begets “just beat their ass (assault)!” Simple, common things we’ve all said at some point in our lives. Still violence.

The hardest ones for us are those that deal with abuse of any sort. It’s easy to jump on that hate train. Truthfully, I’m probably on some of those trains, cause fuck abusers. BUT, we remove those comments/posts because they beget violence - it’s not that we don’t have opinions on those topics, far from it. These break the violence rule and, regardless of our personal opinion, it breaks the rule. It’s as simple as that.

We get MOD mails so filled with anger and spewing hateful shit because “How dare you remove that post for violence. Y’all must agree with them”. No, we don’t - violence is violence. There is enough of it out in the real world, we don’t need it here for any reason.

Finally, the real reason for reviewing this rule: Consent.

Very simply, if anyone touches you without your consent - this is assault. Sexual harassment counts! It is not ‘ick’, it is not ‘smile, they will go away’ - it is something covered by this rule. This is true regardless of gender. Understanding this will help the most when deciding if something is violence or not.

As always, do not directly link to posts/comments or post uncensored screenshots here. Any comments with links will be removed.

We'd like to highlight the regional spinoffs we have linked on the sidebar! If you have any suggestions or additions to this, please let us know in the comments.

AITA for making my (30m) female coworker (28f) unconfortable at a Textile-free wellness spa?

3.2k Upvotes

Some context. Im Dutch and large mixed gender nude spa's are very normal here. You usually wear a robe in between the sauna's and baths etc. But inside the sauna, baths etc you're not clothed. There are loads of different saunas, pools, baths, chaairs, and places to relax, so you can easily spend a whole day there.

I (30m) went to a spa by myself recently. I have a busy job and young kids, so a day off on my own is a pretty rare thing for me.

I was sitting in a jacuzzi when a guy came up to me and introduced himself as the boyfriend of one of my coworkers. He explained that they were there together, but that his girlfriend was uncomfortable being naked around a male coworker. She's pregnant, and she wanted to relax, but apparently couldn't do that with me there.

He basically asked me to leave.

I told him I understood where she was coming from. Personally, I wouldn't think much of it if a coworker saw me naked at a spa, but I realise not everyone feels the same way, and it's probably a different situation for a woman. I didn't want her to spend the whole day feeling uncomfortable because of me, so I asked him if there was anything I could do to make things more confortable for her.

He said she wanted me to leave, and that was the only thing that would make her comfortable.

I told him sorry, but I wasn't going to leave. This was my day off too, and I don't get many of them.

I did offer to make her as confortable as possible. I wouldnt enter any sauna or bath they were in. I would actively look away if we did cross paths and do my best to avoid here in general. Altough I couldnt promise we wouldnt cross paths at all. But I would make an effort.

He wasn't rude about it, but he kept insisting that they wanted me to leave. I told him that if she really couldn't relax with me there, then I didn't see why I should be the one who had to go. I hadn't done anything wrong, and I was willing to avoid her as much as possible, but I wasn't going to give up my day entirely.

He clearly wasn't happy with my answer, and we left it at that. I didn't see either of them for the rest of the day, so I assume they went home.

Later I heard from some colleagues that she was upset I'd refused to leave. Apparently, some people think I should have just gone because being naked is more vulnerable for a woman than for a man.

And I do understand that position. I empathise with her and understand her disconfort of being naked around a male coworker. But at the same time, I was there to relax too, and I don't think it's fair that I should have to leave just because someone else is uncomfortable with me being there. I tried to find a middle ground, but that wasn't good enough for them.

So, AITA? Should I have just left to make her feel comfortable, or was it reasonable to stay and try to avoid her instead?

Edit: several comments talk about me being there first. I actually dont know if I was in the spa first. They just noticed me first. Its pretty big so easy to miss someone for a while. I personally dont think its relevant who was there first, but please correct me if you do think its relevant!

AITA for changing my WiFi password and not sharing it with my parents downstairs anymore?

I (38F) pay for my own internet. My parents rent the main floor apartment in my building, I rent the upstairs. Same landlord.

For a couple years I let them use my WiFi for free to save them money when they were going through tough times.

For context, I'm the outcast since I was a kid. Heavy triangulation — my mom and her husband will tell me one thing, tell my sibling another, then watch us fight. Blatant favouritism — my sibling (32F) can do no wrong, I get blamed for everything. I've been told my whole life I need to be a "better person" while being treated like garbage.

This Thanksgiving they had dinner in the main floor apartment. They invited my sister and her daughter. They did not invite me and my daughter, who live directly upstairs.

My daughter was hurt too. They exclude her while they treat her cousin (my half-sister's daughter) like gold — same pattern they did with me and my sister.

I'm the one who shovels snow so they can move their cars, brought them food when they couldn't afford it, and listen to their woes every day. Meanwhile they give my sister rides to work every day, babysit her kid — things they'd never do for me.

After that dinner I changed my WiFi password and said I'm not comfortable sharing it anymore after being excluded at the holidays.

Now they are threatening me for taking away WiFi over "one dinner" and that I'm selfish. The thing that hurts is they don't seem upset about hurting us, only about losing the WiFi.

AITA for not sharing my WiFi anymore?

AITA for keeping child support payments

1.5k Upvotes

My ex wife is requesting I cancel our child support order because she is struggling to get ahead due to the $380 she pays me a month. She is 9 months pregnant in her new relationship and will be going on unpaid leave here soon so will owe back child support when she returns to work. Out of the $380 she gives me $200 of it goes directly into an investment account for our child and the other $180 pays for her musical instrument and at least 1 personal day for her and I. AITA for not wanting to stop the payments since she is struggling even though it is better for the child in the long run?

AITA for Not Having Alcohol at my Daughter's First Birthday Party?

My husband (32M) and I (31F) had our daughter's first birthday party a few days ago. We had a ton of fun prepping for her party over the prior months, and really believed we thought of every little detail. I handmade my daughter's outfit, invites, party favors, decorations; I made all the food, etc. We put as much love and thought into the day possible, just like any parent would for their child's birthday.

The issue arose whenever guests started arriving. My BIL asked where the beer was. I said, "Oh, sorry; we didn't think of that! We actually don't have any". He got angry and called over a few of my husband's uncles and his father to berate us about not having beer, or any alcohol, at the party. They called us "stuck up", and said they believe that "we think they're better than them for not drinking".

For context, both my husband and I don't drink. I haven't drank before, and my husband did up until a few years ago when had serious gastrointestinal issues related to alcohol specifically. However, they blame me for him not drinking anymore. We are not judgmental of those that do, and did not specifically ban alcohol from our daughter's party.

My husband said that if they weren't happy with the drink selection, they were welcome to go get their own. We live close to a big box store and multiple gas stations. Instead, my BIL and his family chose to leave, and later chose to berate my husband and I over the phone for being "prude assholes". My husband said that he "hoped they would have a good night, and that they got home safe", and hung up on him.

So, Reddit; are we "prude assholes" for not buying alcohol for our daughter's first birthday party?

AITA for not letting my brother with Down syndrome hold my baby right after she’s born?

3.2k Upvotes

My mother in law has these pre conceived ideas on what she thinks my birth plan is. I told her we will have visitors at the hospital, but only after the baby comes and has had time with my husband and I for a few hours. She’s really pissed about this because she assumed she would be there all day or night waiting for the baby to come. We also would prefer nobody to hold her as it’s flu and cold season, but to avoid another fight , and because I understand it might be too much to ask, we’re going to let my husbands parents hold her. My only thing is when she told my brother in law with Down syndrome he would get to hold the baby, I told her privately that I’m not comfortable with that. I love my brother in law, but he hates babies, he’s never held one before - let alone one that’s a couple hours old, and he’s not the most hygienic person. AITAH for setting this boundary about my brother in law, it’s not forever , just for the first couple weeks until the baby gets stronger incase he doesn’t support her properly.

AITA for discussing medical procedures with my parents?

hi all! my[25F] parents[53M &47F] are challenging me to post this because they are sure they are right.

Today, I had gone to the gyno for a well woman exam. I didn’t discuss anything about the exam, I just told them i was excited about something my doctor discussed with me. I told them that I am getting an IUD so maybe I won’t suffer so much month to month, but that I had told the doctor I was scared on the tenaculum, and explained to my parents that it was a sharp clamp that holds the cervix. But also mentioned that the doctor actually told me that they are now regularly offering pain meds and numbing, which is exciting!

ofc when i said this, they like recoiled in disgust. they said it’s incredibly inappropriate to talk about anything “down there” with your father. I said that it is no different than explaining any other procedure, but they said i was being too graphic and gory(?) and i’m not married to my dad so i should be talking vague at most. to the “we’re not a couple” argument, i said it’s not sexual, it’s for my health. i do work in the medical field, so i thought i was being pretty clinical but to them anything mentioning “privates” is too much.

So reddit, AITA for explaining a fairly necessary medical procedure and clinical advancements to my parents?

oh so ETA: here’s the best part. he told me “you know how i have a hard time not picturing things! i don’t want to imagine you like that!” (to be fair he does struggle from like intrusive visual thoughts)

AITA For Not Eating The Cake My Boyfriends Dad Made?

So my birthday was last week and I’m not usually the type of person to take my birthday very seriously I just kind of stay inside like it’s whole other day. My boyfriend’s parents take birthdays, pretty seriously so all day they were surprising me with gifts and food. To which I all appreciated. I was very very grateful and even cried when his mom gave me a keychain of a game that I have only mentioned once the whole time of knowing her.

After all the guests have left, his dad told me that he had one last surprise for me and that it was gonna be special. I was already a little nervous because of everything that had already gone on that day. I was feeling very, very tired and my social battery was on low. His dad then walks out with a big 8 x 8 cake and it was an upside down pineapple cake. I immediately thanked him and gave him a hug telling them that this was the best birthday ever. We sliced up the cake and I realized that there was pineapple on it. I am absolutely not a fan of pineapple. If I take one bite out of it, the texture makes me gag. I was picking up the cake trying to eat around the pineapple, but the whole cake tasted like a pineapple to me and I was having a hard time eating it. His dad noticed and asked me if I didn’t like the cake to which I said it’s not that I just had a lot of food today and the alcohol isn’t sitting right in my stomach. I I asked my boyfriend to finish the cake to which he said he couldn’t so I said I’m going to take it upstairs and try to eat it slowly.

When I got upstairs, I did throw the cake away because I didn’t want to be rude or hurt my boyfriend’s dad feelings. When my boyfriend got upstairs, he noticed the cake in the trashcan and started yelling at me that I was ungrateful and picky. He then took the trashcan downstairs and showed his dad that I had not finished the cake which did upset him. I explained to him that my stomach has just really been hurting and that my stomach was being sensitive but that made him feel worse saying he should’ve brought it out earlier. I thanked him for it again but I could tell he was upset and my boyfriend looked pissed. After getting ready for bed and going home, my boyfriend said he couldn’t believe how rude I was to his dad. Am I the asshole ? Was I being too picky?

AITAH for prioritizing a night alone with my boyfriend over my brother's sleep?

I have a studio apartment 3 minutes off my college campus. My brother (freshman) lives in a dorm. He does NOT like his roommates--one snores, never leaves the room, while the other one stays up late, brings people into the room at midnight--so he has trouble sleeping.

My brother has a key to my apartment. I go home--my parent's house-- most weekends, so I gave him one so he can get a good nights sleep there. He typically uses it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. I don't really care, as I'm not even there. It does add more work for me, however, as he uses my sheets and towels so I'm having to wash them after each time he sleeps there, so they are clean for myself (he sleeps in my bed). He also cooks there, studies there, and just hangs out. But I feel bad for him, so want to provide a space for him to sleep.

However, some weeknights my boyfriend stays with me, example, tonight. My brother asked if he can sleep there as he says his roommates are making him crazy. It's not really that big of a deal, but since I have a studio, he would have to sleep on the couch. It's very close to the bed. Again, not a super big deal, but as selfish as it sounds, I sometimes just want to be with my boyfriend.

My parent's house is 40 minutes away from our college. I suggested to him that he can always drive home for a night, to which he says "That's a funny joke." He has a car on campus, as well.

I told him he can use my apartment all day today, as well as every night this weekend, but I want it to myself tonight to spend time with my boyfriend. He got very mad that he cannot use it tonight to sleep. I know that sounds so selfish of me, so I am wondering AITAH for not letting my brother sleep in my apartment tonight?

Edit: I'm going to explain why it feels selfish at least to me, I feel like since he is my younger brother, I should be there for him no matter what.

AITA for telling my coworker he's an idiot and that he better call Africa to tell all the tribal mothers he thinks they're lazy?

A few of my coworkers and I were having a discussion about things to put in an expectant mother gift, as one of my coworker, we'll call him Bob, just got married this summer, and now he and his wife are expecting.

My idiot coworker, we'll call him Dolt, criticize my suggestion of the swaddle wraps that people can wear and carry their babies (usually) against their chests. Dolt decided to condemn my idea, and said there's no way he'd ever get one of those, because they're for LAZY PARENTS! He said you should be holding your baby, a baby is not an accessory, and only lazy people used those.

What?! Excuse? I would think just the opposite. Parents that are multitasking and trying to get more done use them, and using one in no way makes a person lazy. He said if you were trying to get things done, and couldn't hold the baby, then put them in the stroller.

I told him he was an idiot, and that he better call all the African Tribal Mothers and let them know he thinks they're lazy moms. AITA?

ETA: yes, I'm white. I'm 48, and grew up in Michigan. When I was little and in school in the 80s, we had National Geographic magazines GALORE. I was always amazed by the colorful and glorious photos, and the African Tribe articles are my favorite. I found inspiration in the women could do so much, and have their babies attached to them so they could be on the go! I have a friend that used to swaddle her child with a wrap, but for what ever reason, the first picture that came to mind when he said lazy, were those national Geographic photos of the mothers who were active, innovative, and determined to get stuff done, and never had to put their babies down. I'm AuDHD, and my brain is constantly processing and picturing things, and my mouth moves faster than my filter.

Also edited to clarify dolt is not the dad to be. He is already the dad of a 16 year old daughter.

AITA for telling my SIL I won't attend family dinners if my brother and youngest nephew come?

Context: I'm 39F and have a great relationship with my SIL and her two older kids (18 and 16). My relationship with my older brother (46M) and their youngest, who's 13, is more complicated.

Last weekend, we went to a nice seafood restaurant to celebrate my SIL's promotion. I was excited for her, but the evening quickly became embarrassing. My brother arrived almost 40 minutes late because he wanted to finish a game at home. Once seated, he complained about the parking, the wait, and the menu. We ordered appetizers to share, but he grabbed most of them before everyone had a chance, then complained about the portions. Meanwhile, my youngest nephew was playing videos on his phone at full volume and refusing to put it away. My SIL kept apologizing, while her older kids looked mortified.

Things got worse when my brother started arguing with the waiter over a dish that wasn't available. Later, he complained about the price of something he'd ordered himself and demanded to speak to the manager. When the bill arrived, he loudly accused the waiter of overcharging us for a side dish, even though the charge was correct. I'd finally had enough. I paid for my own meal and the two older kids' portions, said goodbye to my SIL, and left.

The next day, my SIL called to ask if she'd done something wrong. I told her I enjoyed spending time with her and the older kids, but I wasn't willing to keep going to restaurants with my brother and youngest nephew if every outing turned into a scene. She said she understood my frustration but thought I was being unfair to a teenager and a husband who'd been stressed lately. I told her this wasn't a one-time incident. Every outing seems to involve complaints, rude behavior toward staff, and arguments over nothing. My mom later told me she was glad someone had finally called my brother out, but some relatives think I'm being too harsh and should be more patient. I don't want to stop spending time with my SIL or her older children. I just don't want every nice dinner to become an embarrassing experience. So, AITA for refusing to go out to eat with my SIL's family when my brother and youngest nephew are coming?

AITA for answering honestly when a coworker asked me if I thought she was annoying?

• Upvotes

I work at a bank with a bunch of mostly female coworkers. We get along in a teasing manner and we’re always busting chops in good fun. One of the coworkers I get along with best, let’s call her Becca, does nothing but argue with me, but everyone can tell that it’s from mutual affection and not animosity. Our supervisor even gets mock angry at us telling us to cut it out and that we fight like we’re siblings.

Well, we have a coworker, let’s call her Ashley, who joins in on the fun in a way that nobody else likes. When the rest of us (a group of 10) roast each other, we’re having fun. When she joins in, she’s just saying mean shit. She sees our annoyed faces and laughs, proclaiming “I love being a bitch” or “I love pissing people off” or some variation. My theory is that she sees how I am with Becca and thinks that this is the best way to connect with me. It’s not. Not the way she does it. It’s just exhausting. But when I find myself in this situation with an unpleasant person, I let off steam by being equally as mean to them. All our coworkers recognize that I can’t stand her, but she seems to think that I’m reciprocating affection. I’m not. I’m genuinely being mean.

One day, Ashley flat out asks me if I think she’s annoying. I say “Yes” very matter of fact. She laughs and says “no, for real. Do you think I’m annoying?” I let out a light chuckle and say “yea. You’re really annoying.” She gets teary-eyed and says “ok, so seriously, I have this thing where I don’t like for people to think I’m annoying. I’m insecure about it so it really gets to me if someone thinks I’m annoying.”
I tell her “ok, then stop being annoying and I’ll stop thinking you’re annoying.”

She turns red and fights back tears. Now I’m genuinely pissed off. She has made it very clear. Not only is she aware that she’s irritating, it’s her goal. And the fact that she has the balls to cry about it? I tell her “I don’t know why you’re surprised. You know this about yourself. You are proud of it. You say ‘I love being a bitch. I love pissing people off.’ And even though I see you full-on crying right now, I don’t feel the least bit bad for you. You do it on purpose.”

She sat quietly, sulking. Frankly, I enjoyed the silence.

All of my coworkers love this story, but when I’ve told it to anyone else who doesn’t know her, they say I am an asshole for being so blunt. So I bring it before the Reddit council. AITA for being honest when she asked me if she was annoying?

AITAH for not letting my coworker’s kid use my car for his driving test?

Mark, who is my neighbor, and we know each other for years now. Tyler, his son, is seventeen and got his driving test booked. His dad's car is currently out of commission, and as per the requirement of the testing agency, he will have to provide a car, which must be registered and insured.

Last week, Mark visited me and asked me if I would allow Tyler to use my car for taking the test. I told him that I would think about it. The car that I own is a 2019 model hatchback and is essential for my commute to and from work every day. I am the only person covered under the car insurance policy, and my insurer made it clear to me that if any unlisted driver were to cause an accident in my car, not only would the claim be rejected, but my insurance rates might also go up.

After consulting my insurance provider on this matter, I informed Mark politely that I cannot let Tyler use my car due to the insurance issue, but I will happily drop him at the testing place or help him rent a car.

Mark got annoyed and said I was being dramatic and that it’s just a ten-minute test. He said that real neighbors help each other out without making it complicated. Tyler ended up rescheduling his test, and Mark told people on our street that I was too selfish to help a kid with his future.

I never raised my voice or said anything rude. I offered two other ways to help, and he turned both down.

AITAH for saying no to lending my car?

AITA for telling a mother to turn the sound of her device off?

I (47-year-old dad) was in the lobby of my daughter's dance studio; the lobby holds probably 20-25 people, there are about 10 in there as this happens.

A mother with one child presumably in a class and another next to her (a boy of about 8) took out a device (Nintendo Switch?) and started watching a show/movie with her son at a pretty high volume. Roughly equivalent to the level you'd use in your living room. Maybe a touch lower, but nowhere near "we need to keep this low because there are other people in the room" level.

After about 2-3 minutes, I asked her, with some exasperation, "could you please turn the volume off so the rest of us don't have to listen to it?" She glared at me from a few seconds, to the point I asked her why she was glaring. She responded that I could have asked the question in a more polite and less rude manner. This is absolutely correct, but in my mind irrelevant; her behavior was intentionally rude enough that she gave up any expectation of a polite response (as if, say, she had bumped into me or something like that).

She went on to say that it was a dance studio, and therefore loud; to me, this is an argument *against* playing devices at (nearly) full volume but she said I should relax. At some point in here I noted that the screaming coming from the video was inappropriate given there are three and four year olds in classes there; she replied "it's not screaming, it's Toy Story".

To me, the behavior is just simply and obviously inappropriate and inexcusable. There are very few explanations for playing a device like that in public at that volume. But I am a little weird around noises and rules, so I need a check here. And I suppose there are levels. So...

  1. AITA for being irritated at the behavior at all? In other words, in the lobby of a facility that serves children, it's not a big deal if parents are playing videos on speakers without headphones. I pretty firmly believe the answer here is 'no', but, again, I need a check.

  2. AITA for speaking to the woman directly instead of reaching out to an employee? My defense would be that I don't want to bring staff into it. It's not the job of an administrative assistant at a dance studio to police the behavior of adults in the lobby.

  3. AITA for speaking to her in an admittedly exasperated way, particularly in front of her child? This is the only aspect of it that right now I have some guilt about. But she was literally watching it with him, there was no ability to make my statement quietly or to the side. Had the opportunity presented itself, I would have preferred to make my point away from her son. But I also did not see the need to listen to the speaker for another 20 minutes before the class ended.

I feel I did nothing wrong, but, again, I need a check. I look forward to your judgments.

WIBTA If I Told an Artist I Love a Painting of His I Thrifted?

I am really interested in local artists in my area and love supporting local artists when I can. I was thrifting with my sister last week when I found a gorgeous painting by a lesser known local artist. I’ve actually admired his work for a while having seen it in local artist shows. I recognized his style, but not the painting itself. Once I looked closer, I saw that this was clearly a painting he had made as a personal gift to someone. It had a very sweet note on the back explaining the piece and what it meant and a Merry Christmas message.

It was only 3 dollars and I bought it so fast. He usually sells his work for close to 2,000 dollars, which is out of my budget as someone who works in education.

I found his website and he has a contact me page. Clearly he runs it himself. I was talking to my sister and mentioned that I was thinking about messaging him about how much I love this painting I thrifted. She said that would be mean since clearly he painted this for one specific person and they basically threw it away, so it would hurt his feelings. I’ve been talking to other friends and they are torn. A few agree with my sister and think I shouldn’t potentially ruin this guys relationship with his friend. Other people say that an artist would love to hear that someone is enjoying their work, no matter how they came to find it. I see

Edit: y’all, I didn’t realize my post cut off. Here is how it was supposed to end

I see both sides and don’t want to hurt his feelings. I don’t want to tell him the price, just that I found his painting and it has been personally meaningful to me. WIBTA if I reached out to him?

I am seeing that my desire to tell him I enjoy this piece might cause more harm than good, so I will just enjoy it on my wall and the next time I see him at a local art show, I’ll tell him I love his work in general. Thanks, all

AITA for asking my son's gf to be cleaner

Some background: He's in college and living w/us. On more than one occasion, I've cleaned period mess in the bathroom. Blood drops on floor and seat, unwrapped pads in trash. To me, this shows lack of self care and also disrespect to think someone else is cleaning it up (possible future in laws no less). It's just gross to me. We don't have a super close relationship but I don't think its bad either, although I also don't care for her too much. Was thinking of just letting her know what I've noticed, showing her where I've stored some the female hygeine things in the br and and then politely asking her to also wrap up her mess?

AITA for refusing to apologize to my SIL for supposedly ruining her reputation?

• Upvotes

My husband, “Mark,” and I are in our late 50s and recently married. We knew each other for decades but began dating after I moved back to the area during COVID. His family is close, and his mother expects everyone to attend family gatherings. The family includes my FIL, MIL, SIL, BIL, Mark, me, and Mark’s two adult sons.

SIL has a history of criticizing Mark, holding grudges, and being insulting. For example, at my stepson’s birthday, she gave him a gift card saying, “I will take you and buy you some shoes that aren't from Walmart, unlike your dad.” This was early in our relationship, and I had no idea she was like that. Her parents made her apologize to Mark the next day.

To complicate matters, I have life-threatening allergies to several things, including peppers, fragrances, and flowers. SIL dismisses them as drama and makes little effort to accommodate me. As a result, I’ve had multiple reactions at her home.

About four years ago, SIL and BIL hosted a Father’s Day gathering. SIL insisted on making kebabs with peppers because she thought her dad liked them, despite my severe allergy. We asked her to prepare separate pepper-free food and keep it separate for me. She agreed.

When we arrived, the peppers she cooked made it difficult for me to breathe inside her house. SIL assured us the food was safe, but I struggled despite my usual allergy medication. I learned from my MIL that the chicken was marinated. I asked for the ingredients, but SIL dismissed my questions and said I didn’t need to worry about it. I had to insist 3 times before she gave me the ingredients.

I went outside considering calling 911. When my MIL came to check on me, I told her, “My SIL keeps trying to kill me off.” I meant I felt unsafe, not that SIL had deliberately poisoned me. I was sick for days and missed work. SIL blamed me for not providing enough information and never apologized.

Afterward, Mark and I began hosting family gatherings for safety reasons. Everyone, including SIL and BIL, attended without incident.

Months later, while we were planning my birthday, my FIL called Mark, furious with me. SIL claimed I was still talking about her, had told someone outside the family about the incident, and had posted about it online, damaging her reputation.

I never posted anything about her. We did tell friends what happened at the time because I was explaining my illness. There was nothing to apologize for. Mark defended me, but my birthday was ruined. SIL and BIL now refuse to attend family events if I’ll be there, and his parents expect Mark to fix things.

I suspect one of Mark’s close friends may be stirring things up with SIL, but I can’t prove it.

AITA for refusing to apologize when I never posted about her or tried to damage her reputation?

AITA for getting my stepbrother a retro cap?

I(20) visited my dad last week and asked my stepbrother(8) what he wanted for his birthday. He said he wanted his baseball team’s cap, so I went to their official store to see which designs they have. At first I was about to get one of their current ones but some of the retros looked pretty cool so I ended up buying one of those.

My stepbrother was excited about the gift and thanked me for it but my dad said I should have gotten a modern design instead of one they stopped using ages ago and that he could get bullied for wearing something different from the other kids.

AITA for going to an event that doors opened at 6:30/started 8 before my boyfriend got off work

My boyfriend and I talked about going to an event. I talked to him earlier today and he said he didn’t want to go anymore. I didn’t confirm that I was still going but I didn’t say I wasn’t. The last conversation we had this morning is that a small part of me was not wanting to go because I have an early morning flight.

I got off work at 5, went home to feed the dogs and change and got to the event location early enough to get close to the stage. he called when he got off at 6:46 asking what I was doing. I said I just got into the event. He asked where I was standing. I said by the stage. He asked how he would be able to find me and I said I didn’t think he would be able to since I’m near the stage and by the time he gets here it would be hard to get to the stage. He said “well I’m not going anymore because I don’t want to alone at an event.” I told him “well I’m here alone at an event and I’m doing just fine” He got mad and hung up on me.

AITA?

edit to add. I had told him originally that I was planning to go right after work and taking out the dogs/changing. he said friends from work were coming with him.

also, we live together. So while I’ll be gone for the weekend, we spend anytime we’re not at work together.

AITA for not giving my step father my headphones?

• Upvotes

Trow away account because my step-father family knows the main one.

I (19 female) still live with my parents, my mom (39 years-old) and my step father (38 years old), becuase moving out wasn't option yet i still live in my childhood home but i pay rent and both my mom and step dad told me it was perfectly fine for me to stay while i pay food and rent, something i was perfectly fine about.

So recently i had a fight with my step-father, Honestly we aren't very close but we are civil, i respect him but i don't see him as a dad but hes not a monster and my mother is happy so i don't have any complaints on that aspect, the problem was that yesterday he had to go to a work meeting and asked me if i could give him my headphones.

The problem is that each time I share something with him, he breaks them or they stop working minutes after he gives them back, he has already broken 2 of my preview headphones, both were brand new, so when he asked me I told him 'I'm sorry but I won't, I don't trust you to take care of them while you have them'

He started to demand me to give them to him because they were just 'headphones', i told him i buy them with my own saved money and unless he promised to buy me new ones if he broke these then i won't give them to him.

He left angry and with no headphones, my mom is in my side, saying i did the right thing by being firm and that she would talk with him but my step father Sister (Call her Jess) sent me a text calling me a spoiled brat about it.

So, was i the Asshole?, is it is then i would fully apologize but i wanna ask to be sure.

Not the A-hole AITA for refusing to eat his bday dinner for me since he wouldn't add what I asked for

2.4k Upvotes

For my (30F) birthday we ate dinner at home. It is not my birthday but he is leaving to visit his friends for a wedding on my birthday.

He (30M) made chicken salad (EDIT green salad + chicken NOT whatever mayo chicken thing y'all are thinking of) which I find weird since I don't really like this and didn't ask for it but whatever. I asked him to put carrots in it and I had some in a container in the fridge. He asked where it was and I said the bottom shelf. He didn't look and just asked me to go get it. I am doing something else and asked him to get it. He said he refused and was obviously frustrated. I asked him why he couldn't do it and he said he doesn't know where it is. It is easy to see if you try.

I told him I didn't want his dinner and went to go study by myself. I guess he wants some big reward for making dinner and hates the idea of me wanting something added to it? We are trying to save money which is why I didn't want to go out. He just acts stubborn and will refuse to do something if I ask him to do a little task and its really irritating.

EDIT: It was just salad greens with chicken on top. Not that other type of chicken salad sandwich type. So many people were bothered by this LOL.

AITA for telling my sister we are tired of her using her birth story in every conversation possible?

4.6k Upvotes

I’m F29 and my sister is F31. This year my sister gave birth to her first baby, a gorgeous little girl in March. This baby is so loved by everyone in my family there is zero question about that. The issue we are all having currently is with my sister. My sister had some complications with her birth. She had a C-Section which at first went fine but afterwards she had some complications which she needed to go back down to surgery for. My family, my husband and my brother in law were so frightened when it happened and it was probably one of the scariest things we have experienced. She did however recover great and her and baby were perfect afterwards and have been perfect since. Now the issue we are having is any and every time, and I mean EVERY time, I see my sister, she has to mention how she “nearly died” giving birth. The conversation can be nothing to do with birth or children but she will bring it back to that, and the hardest thing is when myself or another person is trying to vent or even just get something that is bothering them out she spins it back to herself and how she “almost died giving birth”. The final straw was last weekend, myself and my husband went to visit my sister and her husband and the baby and my husband was speaking about the anniversary of his friends passing from a car accident that was coming up and he was upset as this was only the first year since it happened and my sister took this as a moment to say, “i completely understand, I mean I almost died giving birth so I know how aweful that must feeling” I snapped and told her, not everything needs to be about your birth story, we get it, you had a traumatic birth but this isn’t about you and we are tired of you using it in every conversation. It went silent for a second and she got upset saying that I didn’t appreciate how I could have lost her. I got very angry and said of course I appreciate it, I was there I was crying but your okay and baby is okay but what is not okay is you dismissing someone else because you think you had it worse. My brother in law then proceeded to tell everyone to relax and we would go get lunch. We did but the rest of the day was quite awkward. AITA for confronting my sister this way or was I right to tell her to stop?

EDIT
This is something my sister is in therapy for and has been since she gave birth. And myself and my family have even been to appointments with her.
This also wasn’t the first time she was talking over someone else’s grief or trauma to bring up her birth complications

Not the A-hole AITA for telling my sister not to press the button in public unless it's a real emergency?

1.7k Upvotes

I (20's, F) have a younger sister "Ellie" (11F). Ellie is non-verbal, and communicates entirely through Proloquo (an AAC app) on her tablet.

Lately, when she's slightly inconvenienced, we're fighting, or something just isn't going her way - she presses a button that says "Disaster" and follows it up with "Call 911". She's kind of a drama queen.

Yesterday, she pressed the "Call 911" button in the grocery store while she was inconvenienced. A few people asked if she was alright. Afterwards, I told Ellie that she should stay away from the "Call 911" button in public unless it's an actual emergency.

My mom is mad at me for telling her that. She says that Ellie has the right to use her buttons however she feels and that I shouldn't be discouraging any use.

AITA for telling my sister not to press the button in public unless it's a real emergency? I don't want her to be the "the girl who cried wolf" AAC edition.

AITA for getting my niece to swim lessons, and signing up for her school's truck or treat day?

I am pretty much with my niece five days a week. Her father is solely a weekend hero dad, and I help my sister out since I don't work much, kind of soft retired. I work like 8 hours total a week, don't have a partner and a lot of free time so I spend a lot of time with my niece. She calls me her second mommy.

Both her parents have been promising to give her swim lessons for like two years now, they have not. An indoor swimming spot recently opened up in a shopping plaza we pass by everyday after I pick her up from school. She asked if she could go, i said sure let's sign up for some classes.

I did, and now my sister ia upset, and I am like why. She could have done this a million times over, even offered to pay for the classes myself. She said I am taking away moments from her, I asked her when was she going to give her lessons? She will be six in April going to wait another year?

She said she does not have time, to do all the things her daughter wants. I get it, but why get upset when someone with the time is willing to do so?

Then she brought up her how I signed up for the school truck or treat. She has an issue cause she claims I make her look bad. I got confused cause my sister was not going to participate cause she has work but was still going to send my niece. I said that is kind of messed up, and told her daughter asked if we could decorate the car for the day and I said sure why not?

My sister told me to stop just giving her daughter what she wants. I told her i don't, but what exactly is wrong with signing her up for swim classes, or taking part of her school events? If you don't have time or means does that mean she should be forced to wait?

I have the time and means, why is she upset? She said because she is the mother and it is not fair I get more time with her. So i asked her what does she want, should she go to after school program until 7 since that is when you get off?

She said maybe at this point, I don't get what exactly did I do wrong here.
