miscellaneous [Loved Trope] The Comedy Suddenly Stops Joking Around Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
621 Upvotes

There's nothing I love more than being in a comedy, and you get that one moment, usually a single look from a character, and all of the sudden we stop joking around. Whatever's going on from this point forward is played completely straight in stark contrast to everything that came before.

1). A moment from the comedy show Scrubs. Our man Dr. Cox is exchanging jokes with his best friend when he is asked "Where do you think we are?" Suddenly it is revealed Cox's best friend isn't actually there, and they are at his funeral.

2). An dark comedy called Haunted Hotel. The whole show specializes in dark humor with ghosts, demons, and plenty of death. But when near the end of season 1, it is revealed that always happy go lucky ghost Nathan died from suicide, everything slows way down. Suddenly the whole show gains this tiny bit of underlying seriousness they never joke about.

3). From an anime called Gintama. One two episode story arc involves an old alien dog that wants to conquer the earth now that his old owner is hospitalized. Near the end, suddenly all jokes are off as the two old timers struggle to avoid dying of old age as neither wants the other to feel lonely.

miscellaneous [Meta trope] Featuring someone who is the very thing they villainize

Thumbnail
gallery
605 Upvotes

Cars - The main villain of the movie is Chick Hicks, who is an embodiment of dirty motorsports drivers who do anything to win including crashing into others on purpose which is obviously incredibly dangerous. The irony is that it has a cameo by F1 driver Michael Schumacher, who is exactly the same kind of dirty driver that Chick is, having also crashed into his competitors more than once

Marty Supreme - Milton Rockwell is an asshole, ruthless businessman who is played by Kevin O'Leary, who fits that description to a T. The irony is that O'Leary is even more of an asshole than Rockwell, who was just an arrogant dick but didn't do anything that was actually evil, whereas O'Leary has supported Trump's plan for the annexation of Canada(despite being Canadian) and he and his wife were responsible for killing someone

(translation: starts out as a bad guy, becomes a good guy)

Baldur's Gate 3 - there are many ways to play the Dark Urge origin, but one of the most satisfying is to completely reject your villainous urges and earn Withers' respect

James Cameron's Avatar - after realizing that his CO never wanted a peaceful solution with the Na'vi, Jake Sully switches sides and rejects his humanity

Final Fantasy IV - Cecil deserts Baron and becomes a paladin by overcoming his dark side

Wing Commander IV - Blair follows some very questionable orders before defecting from the Confederation

Marge (The Simpsons) In modern episodes, I genuinely feel bad for her voice actress Julie Kavner, she is 74 doing Marge’s scratchy voice and you can hear that it’s it sounds different and squeaky.

Spongebob (Spongebob Squarepants) in modern episodes of SpongeBob, you can notice that his voice sounds a bit deeper and not the same, Tom Kenny is 64 today he has stated that he wants to voice SpongeBob for as long as he still have a voice, he’s a legend

Goku (Dragon Ball Z) the original Japanese voice for Goku, Masako Nozawa is 89 years old and she still voices Goku to this day. You can definitely hear more age in her Goku voice but she can still deliver a “Kamehameha” like a legend.

even worse if the reason is for being butthurt

-Program Exchange (along with some few 90s cartoons like Tiny Toons Adventures): basically the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got the "this thing ruins young generations" treatment or being seen as something that gonna pass out quickly for being "a stupid concept" (Basically "Boomers Cartoonish we're baffled kids would rather watch Pokemon over Goodfeathers), one of the funniest examples is the Program Exchange promo (with Woody only being a public icon in Brazil, Fred being only a cereal and vitamin mascot, and Dennis being dead and most of the niche of public prefer the British version)

-Family Guy: the infamous "joke" of Quagmire being over Marge and killing the Simpson family, probably just as a respond to the "plagiarismo di plagiarismo" joke of the Simpsons

-Midtopia I mean Chimptopia: (EDIT) promoting their new show by throwing trash at Gameoverse like an attemp of "console wars of SEGA vs Nintendo" type (and with some things revealing about the author like being rejected of a gartic phone with RubberRoss, makes the situation more lame at that time)

-The Red Ape Family: basically the authors being butthurt for the most logic arguments of the NFT being a scam and critics about their "show" and putting most of the critics as a bunch of babies, some of them being saberspark

-Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest: between all the war of consoles, in the "Cranky's Videogame Heroes", there's a trash can with Sonic's Shoes and Earthworm Jim's pistol with the sign of "No Hoppers"

Lore Once the rebellion takes control, the former regime becomes the new insurgents.

Examples:

  • House Reiss and the Anti-Personnel Control Squad (Attack on Titan) - The Kingdom of the Walls was ruled by a shadow government via the Reiss family and controlled by merchant guilds. The Reiss Family wants to keep humanity trapped inside the Walls for eventual extinction because of Eldia's atrocities in the past. But Erwin Smith and the Scouts want to free their people, so they stage a coup, arresting all guild leaders. This meant that Rod Reiss and his enforcers, the Anti-Personnel Control Squad, were branded fugitives
  • The FND (Far Cry 6) - The FND were the official military and enforcement of the Castillo regime over Yara, but then Libertad slowly won back the country; they laid siege to the capital, where Castillo killed himself and his son, Diego. After this, the remaining FND soldiers ended up becoming terrorists using the same tactics that we used throughout the game.
  • The First Order (Star Wars) - After the fall of the Galactic Empire, the civil war still raged on, but a New Republic was eventually formed to bring stability and democracy back to the galaxy. But the remnants of the Empire remained and became the First Order. Force Awakens removes all the politics behind this and instead kills off the New Republic so it's Rebels vs. Empire again.

i’m using the term “human” very loosely. As long as they look like a human, it counts. Yes i know Yoruichi is a Shinigami and Minerva is a witch

Characters [beloved trope] flamethrower troops

Thumbnail
gallery
390 Upvotes

If man instinctively fears fire, what reaction can be expected from a high-speed jet of flame (whether liquid fuel or gas)? Unfortunately, flamethrowers are impractical—for various reasons—yet they remain impressive nonetheless.

  1. Flamethrower Clone Troopers – Star Wars: The Clone Wars: In addition to their distinctive Geonosian-camouflage armor, flamethrower clone troopers make their debut against a Geonosian colony (with the expected results).

  2. Flamers and melta weapons—Warhammer 40k: to hunt the alien, purge the unclean, and slay the heretic, flamers are a more than acceptable choice—available in all sizes, from hand-held flamers to heavy flamers that spew vast quantities of promethium. And for those requiring greater armor penetration, there are meltaguns—a sort of hybrid between a flamer and a plasma weapon capable of melting through the heaviest armor.

  3. Greek fire—the real life: the ancestor of the flamethrower and one of the secret weapons of the Byzantine Empire—or rather, the Eastern Roman Empire. It was key to maintaining its naval supremacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, to the point where its production was a state secret.

miscellaneous [Compelling Trope] - You're too important to join the fight or would make things worse

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Joining a fight would actively make things worse, whether it be giving the enemy what they want or potentially losing their ace in the hole or worse.

Naruto and the Great Ninja War - Naruto

Madara, the man waging war on all of Konoha wants to gather all the Tailed Beasts together for his plan. Naruto carries one in his body as well as his friend Killer B. Both of them are so powerful they could level the playing field by a fuckton, but that would risk giving Madara the last two Beasts if they die in battle. Which is why so many of Naruto's friends and allies try to keep him away from the battlefield as long as they can.

Ben and the Highbreed Armada - Ben 10

The Highbreed are attacking Earth and Ben wants to stop them using his Omnitrix. But Azmuth, the creator of the Omnitrix, orders him to not join the fight. He reveals one of the reasons he made the Omnitrix was so if the universe were destroyed or devastated, the DNA reserves on it could help repopulate it like Noah's Ark. If Ben joins the fight and the Omnitrix is destroyed then there's no second chance, they're fucked.

Amazo fighting Justice League members - DC Comics

Amazo is an android that adapts to and copies any power it comes in contact with. This means the Justice League have to try and fight him with as few members as possible or else they might fuck themselves over. In the JLU cartoon, Superman is told not to intervene so it doesn't gain his Kryptonian powers. In the Injustice movie, Plastic Man is told to stay out of it because his plastic physiology makes him nearly invincible, definitely can't let it copy that.

Brencis (Blood of Dawnwalker) he was aware he might lose to Coen… so in order to gain the last laugh, he turned his sister Lunka into a feral vampire. And so far in the story, there is no cure to her condition.

Safin (No time to Die) During his final confrontation with James Bond, Safin infects him with DNA-targeting nanobots designed to kill Madeleine and Mathilde, Bond's family.
Bond kills Safin, but the damage is already done. Bond can never safely reunite with the people he loves, and ultimately chooses to die in the missile strike.

John Kramer (Jigsaw) Kramer arranged for Lynn Denlon to wear an explosive collar connected to his heart monitor. If someone killed Kramer, Lynn would die too. When Jeff finally kills Kramer, he unwittingly triggers the device that kills his own wife. Even worse, Kramer leaves behind a recording revealing that their daughter has also been kidnapped.

Necrons from 40k: very technologically advanced and nigh immortal, unfortunately they’re splintered by multiple dynasties that all have their own agenda. Also they’re old and have robot dementia

Orks from 40k (again): innumerable and lives for fighting, unfortunately since they love fighting that means they love to fight among themselves

Skavens from Warhammer Fantasy: if they want, they can burrow from underground and emerge up, caught everyone off guard Emergence Day style and taken over the world. Unfortunately their culture thrive in backstabbing and betrayal against one another

Tbh, most if not all warhammer faction could’ve won if infighting wasnt a concept lol

Characters [Fun Trope] “Who Needs A Costume, This Is Just Me”

Thumbnail
gallery
299 Upvotes

Since my last one was so serious, I’d figured my next post would be something both fun and festival, and I thought it would be fun to do one of the times where a characters alter ego clothing (essentially superhero or villain) or their own unique appearance gets confused for a costume and they get to blend in rather than just being feared or seen as something more than human

Essentially where an exceptional character uses their natural appearance or work outfit for Halloween or other occasions where costuming is expected, I will be mostly focusing on the halloween ones but you can focus on the other occasions if you want

Examples:

Supergirl

In one of the issues of her 2025 run, Kara is convinced to go trick or treating wearing her original Supergirl outfit and claiming to be an ordinary partygoer wearing a costume

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In their 2003 series, an episode reveals that Halloween was the only day that Splinter would take the turtles to the surface and trick or treat all day

Spider-Man

In the PS4 game, there’s a mission where you go into a Halloween party to look for someone while in full costume and some people may remark on it being well made

Catwoman: Hunted

In order to infiltrate a costume party, Selina disguised herself with her Bronze Age costume

  1. The Sonic Screwdriver (Doctor Who) - works as a versatile sci-fi multi-tool that opens any door, as well as an array of other Dues-Ex-Machina feats, but it has the hard limit (with multiple examples in the show) of not working on wood. Low tech vs high tech kinda thing.
  2. Green Lantern Ring (DC comics) - This is more of a holdover from the goofier Silver Age comics, but it sometimes rears its head in the modern day stories. The Green Lantern ring’s power constructs do not work on/around things/creatures that are yellow in colour (due to yellow being “opposite” to green in colour and in ideals - what with yellow representing the fear powered lanterns)
  3. The Penance Stare (Marvel Comics) - One of Ghost Rider’s most OP abilities is the Penance Stare. If they use this stare on someone, the recipient suddenly feels all the pain and turmoil that they have wrought upon others (usually resulting in their soul burning from the inside out). There are a few times that Ghost Rider’s whips out this power on someone without any effect - the explanation being that the recipient must have the ability to feel regret/remorse/guilt, otherwise the power of the Penance Stare is nullified.

Powers [Mixed Trope] Stripping heroes of their power or main power

Thumbnail
gallery

I don't mean adaptations where they no longer have their powers, I mean them literally losing their powers

Justice League Apokolips War - Darkseid injects Superman with kryptonite which makes him lose his powers, turning him basically into a normal guy. While I really dislike this movie, I think Superman is one of the redeeming aspects of it as it shows that Clark will still be a hero without his powers and leaving him alive was a mistake on Darkseid's part

Green Lantern Future State - The Green Lantern corps lose their power rings, I honestly wasn't a fan of this one as I felt it took away what made them interesting

Naruto - In the end of the series Kakashi loses his Sharingan

The Unworthy Thor - As the title suggests, during this run Thor was unworthy of the Mjolnir, which was taken by Jane Foster

Characters A character provides another with a prime opportunity to kill them, to demonstrate the absolute power of their position

Just to demonstrate a difference in control, to humiliate, or to test: An opportunity for a free kill is provided which the opponent can not afford to take. Often this comes back to bite them in the ass once tha balance of power has shifted.

  1. GOT - Ramsey let's Reek shave him, who is too broken and afraid to make a move, even tho he has little left to lose.

  2. TWD - Negan hands his bat Lucille to Rick and then turns his back on him. Days earlier, Negan used this bat to execute Ricks friends in front of him and he'd love to return the favour, but Negan is still holding a gun to the heads of everyone Rick knows.

  3. Breaking Bad - Gus hands a kitchen knife aimed at his own heart to Walter. In this peaceful beginning to their business relationship, Walter is already very aware that he's dealing with a smart, dangerous and careful individual. He understands the gesture both as a sign of trust and peace, and as a power move and silent threat.

(Jesters and mimes also allowed)

-Ronald McDonald (McDonald's): He's just a guy that wants to help kids by making them smile (This may be debatable though considering he's the mascot of a fast food business).

-Rainbow the Clown (Powerpuff Girls): Technically he only became evil because of a bleach accident.

-The Jester (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths): I don't know if this is cheating but he's basically a good version of Joker from earth 3.

-Jojo (Jojo's Circus): I don't really have anything to say about this other than this was one of my favorite underrated shows growing up, I just don't really remember much from it though.

Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty (2013-) is the smartest man in all of the universes within the CFC, living with a cynical view of the world that he only has himself to protect from his struggles, and himself to blame for what he struggles through. In A Rickle in Time, he has to make fracturing timelines coincide to keep himself and his grandkids safe. Morty slips into the void around them as they just get ready to do so which loses his own collar. This instance of Rick quickly frees Morty out of the split timeline dimension while knowing this would trap him forever.

Eustace Bagg from Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999-2000) is Muriel Bagg's husband and spites their adopted dog Courage throughout the show as he's either roped into or actively instigating problems for the family. In The Curse of Shirley, the plot of the entire episode revolves around the Bagg family being cursed if he can't be anything more than selfish. Looking through a mystical mirror to see his own younger self in need of a hat, it moves Eustace to gift his hat and break the curse over them all.

Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants (1999-) is jaded in general for existence to match the fry cook's overzealous nature as the two create friction over working in the same restaurant and living as neighbors. In Pizza Delivery, each of SpongeBob's efforts to protect a customer's Krusty Krab Pizza from contamination, which Squidward consistently elected to forget about, culminate with the door slammed in his face all because of him not having Diet Doctor Kelp on the side which that fuckass fish didn't order in the first place. Squidward comes straight to defend SpongeBob's honor for this via a pizza pie thrown into the customer's face and considering the wellness of his usually unwelcomed partner.

Don't watch these at Sunday School

1) While a more sympathetic example than the below, Lucifer's tirle character still retains the CW bait (yes I know it's a Fox/Netflix show) crowd as he's busy solving crimes.

2) Mystery of the Kingdom of God was a 2021 Christian kids film that would've fallen into obscurity beyond fudnamentalist audiences if it wasn't for folks picking up on the Tumblr sexyman vibes of the film's devil.

3) The CEO of Hell Lucifer (or 'Lucy') is an intimidating persona also reflecting the creator's preference for women in business suits.

4) Le génie du mal ('The Spirit of Evil', sculpture on the right) was a sculpture by Guillame Geefs in 1848, meant to replace the sculpture on the left by his brother Joseph, criticised for its distracting beauty and 'unhealthy allure'. He didn't do a good job (or did a VERY good one) taking that into account.

Mina from Noita: Every enemy, every substance, every pixel tries to kill you. Dying in Noita is very easy .. until you get so many buffs that spells that one-shot everything do no effect on you. Locking the win and ending the run in this situation is quite the predicament.

Basically whenever the story sets up a love triangle/corner or similar in the story with the implicit expectation of having to choose between the partners but then the story pulls the rug under you asking "Why can't they all be happy?" and allowing all involved character to date each other

Rentarou x Hahari x Akane - The 100 Girlfriends who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really love you: Rentarou is a guy who falls in love easily to the point that, at the age of 16, he has confessed to 100 different girls and has recieved 100 rejections (With his first one being at 8 months of age), he's then confronted by the God of Love who confesses that, due to an accident while watching "Castle in the sky" by Studio Ghibli, he accidentally made Rentarou have 100 soulmates. He explains to Rentarou that having 1 soulmate is an incredibly lucky occurance, to the point that those people who are blessed to have one have exhausted all their luck in life and are prone to accidents that scale in severity until they meet an early end. Thankfully their luck resets if those soulmates find each other and live together. This still applies to Rentarou and he only technically needs to date 1 soulmate to avoid death, but it also means that the 99 other soulmates are fated to die without him. And he's instantly confronted by having Akane (The tsundere archetype) and Hahari (The "Lewd" Archetype) fall in love at the same time with him. He considers dating them in secret, but he genuinely loves the two of them and can't bring himself to do something that would hurt them in the future, so instead chooses to come clean about his feeling and being unable to choose, so instead he confesses his love to them and asks them to date him at the same time. They have some hang ups at first, but eventually decide to give it a test. At this point in the manga, the two girls have even develop feelings with each other, being one of the few girls to actually love someone as strongly as they love Rentarou

UNDEADXUNLUCK - Rip x Leila x Latla: Rip and Latla are both members of the UNDER organization that are seeking to steal an artefact from "The Union" that, theoretically will allow them to time travel. They want to time time travel to save Latla Sister and Rip's fiancee Leila, who tragically died due to Rip's Negator ability, "UNrepair", and Latlas "UNtruth" which manifested during a life threatening operation that Rip was performing. They eventually would die in battle against UNdead. Then, when Fuuko is entrust with the final loop, she makes sure to guarantee everyone's happy ending, which among other things, involves studying over 100 years to learn how to properly operate someone's heart. Later, after the fight everyone assumes, including Latla, that Rip is going to have his happy ever after with Leila while Latla will be sideline. Instead, Rip confesses to Fuuko that he loves them both equally, he has always done so. And that he couldn't care less what other people think, since it's their happiness and not the strangers, So in the day of Leila & Rip's wedding he proclaims that the three of them will get married to the surprise of the guests and Latla herself.
