Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] Creators don’t add the setting’s language to what they’re talking about

I’ll be straight with you - I came here to vent my angry rant about Metro 2039. I added Kingdom Come: Deliverance only as an extra example.

Metro 2039: I’ll be honest - I’m from Russia and my main language is Russian. For those who care so much, I don’t support what my government is doing.

Just what the fuck, 4A Games? Completely abandon the Russian language! Fine, maybe just the voice acting, but completely abandoning the Russian text? That’s some kind of madness. You’re making a game based on a work by a Russian author(In Russia, Glukhovsky was given the status of a foreign agent.), set in - for God’s sake - Moscow Metro. You really want to tell the story of a totalitarian fascist regime, but you can’t even be bothered to add Russian dialogue. It’s like in Wolfenstein refusing to include German speech.

I can’t think of a single rational reason for such an idiotic decision. You can’t work with Russian voice actors? Sony keeps releasing games in Russian. Hell, even in Stalker 2 there was Russian text. The irony is that Ukrainian voice acting is present in the game, which essentially means instead of shooting Russian-speaking aggressors I get to shoot Ukrainian-speaking ones. Bravo, 4A Games.

Kingdom Come Deliverance: The developers justified the lack of Czech dialogue by lack of time, which I find complete stupidity considering it’s a Czech studio making a game about medieval Czech history. Fortunately, they fixed the mistake in the second part.

Characters [Loved Trope] "Monogamy is for cowards" Spoiler

Basically whenever the story sets up a love triangle/corner or similar in the story with the implicit expectation of having to choose between the partners but then the story pulls the rug under you asking "Why can't they all be happy?" and allowing all involved character to date each other

Rentarou x Hahari x Akane - The 100 Girlfriends who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really love you: Rentarou is a guy who falls in love easily to the point that, at the age of 16, he has confessed to 100 different girls and has recieved 100 rejections (With his first one being at 8 months of age), he's then confronted by the God of Love who confesses that, due to an accident while watching "Castle in the sky" by Studio Ghibli, he accidentally made Rentarou have 100 soulmates. He explains to Rentarou that having 1 soulmate is an incredibly lucky occurance, to the point that those people who are blessed to have one have exhausted all their luck in life and are prone to accidents that scale in severity until they meet an early end. Thankfully their luck resets if those soulmates find each other and live together. This still applies to Rentarou and he only technically needs to date 1 soulmate to avoid death, but it also means that the 99 other soulmates are fated to die without him. And he's instantly confronted by having Akane (The tsundere archetype) and Hahari (The "Lewd" Archetype) fall in love at the same time with him. He considers dating them in secret, but he genuinely loves the two of them and can't bring himself to do something that would hurt them in the future, so instead chooses to come clean about his feeling and being unable to choose, so instead he confesses his love to them and asks them to date him at the same time. They have some hang ups at first, but eventually decide to give it a test. At this point in the manga, the two girls have even develop feelings with each other, being one of the few girls to actually love someone as strongly as they love Rentarou

UNDEADXUNLUCK - Rip x Leila x Latla: Rip and Latla are both members of the UNDER organization that are seeking to steal an artefact from "The Union" that, theoretically will allow them to time travel. They want to time time travel to save Latla Sister and Rip's fiancee Leila, who tragically died due to Rip's Negator ability, "UNrepair", and Latlas "UNtruth" which manifested during a life threatening operation that Rip was performing. They eventually would die in battle against UNdead. Then, when Fuuko is entrust with the final loop, she makes sure to guarantee everyone's happy ending, which among other things, involves studying over 100 years to learn how to properly operate someone's heart. Later, after the fight everyone assumes, including Latla, that Rip is going to have his happy ever after with Leila while Latla will be sideline. Instead, Rip confesses to Fuuko that he loves them both equally, he has always done so. And that he couldn't care less what other people think, since it's their happiness and not the strangers, So in the day of Leila & Rip's wedding he proclaims that the three of them will get married to the surprise of the guests and Latla herself.

Characters Characters that get a lot of undeserved hate

Thumbnail

These characters are obviously not perfect, and are flawed where the frustration around them can be understandable. But there have been some cases, where people on social media take it way too far than they actually deserve

Skyler White from Breaking Bad is a big example! Many people hated her because of how much she opposes Walt’s actions and doesn’t support his decision to be involved in the drug world in order to “provide for his family.” Which is completely fair and a realistic reaction to how someone would respond if they found out their spouse made meth and has also been responsible for killing people.

Lori Grimes from The Walking Dead is another big one! The hate around her I can understand to a degree, but when you think about her situation where the world is ending, and your loved ones (which included her thinking her husband; Rick) are all dead, you want to feel good where you don’t feel like you’re trapped in a nightmare that’ll never end. So you latch onto anything that makes you feel safe, which plays a role in how she interacted with Rick and Shane, that unfortunately put them at odds. Don’t get me wrong, her encouraging Rick to do something about Shane than not being there for him when he needed her most after killing him was shitty on her part. But what I liked, is how she recognized this herself and felt heartbroken when she was slowly accepting that their connection as a married couple was over.

Ginny Miller from Ginny & Georgia is one I put on here, only because whenever I finished the show (or the seasons that are currently available) I was quite surprised to see that a lot of people can’t stand Ginny and talk about how “ungrateful and annoying” she is when it comes to not appreciating Georgia as a mom. Yet people disregard how much Georgia’s actions and unhealthy habits have impact Ginny growing up, that she suffers through trauma because of it. She violates her personal space, refuses to talk about conflict with her and embraces toxic positivity, not to mention she sabotages both Ginny and Austin’s credit score which will make it hard for them to get into college or build their lives as adults once they’re old enough.

Characters [Funny trope] The adaptation is SO inaccurate that it creates a new character who is just as if not more engaging

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

-Hercules (Disney's Hercules)

Hercules is much more simpleminded and charismatic in the movie as opposed to the relatively serious character of Heracles we see in myth. This also applies to Hades as the villainous showing we see in the movie is much different from the relatively neutral character that myth Hades is.

-Nicola Tesla (Record of Ragnarök)

Most characters in Record of Ragnarök have this aspect. Nicola Tesla serves as a good example in this as they make him a far more eccentric and hopeful character representing humanities progress.

NVM on that last one. I don't even think it counts as an adaptation

Cooties (2014): The way the zombie virus is spread is through contaminates chicken nuggets. In the scene where a kid bites the nugget, green ooze can be seen coming from the nugget. When I saw this, it made me so violently ill. It was so bad I couldnt eat chicken for months because I would think of this scene and throw up.

Borrasca (2015): The ending of the story involves an incestual prison encampment of female slaves from a town in the middle of nowhere. During the ending, the story describes how the funny best friend of the main character gets brutually paralysed by the father of the main character. The description was excruciantingly haunting that I totaled 9 1/4 hrs of sleep for a whole week because of how graphic the ending was.

Characters' Items/Weapons Characters who are nothing without their weapons

Marvel Comics - Nowadays this is no longer the case as the Mjolnir is merely a way for Thor to channel his powers and he still has super strength , but in early comics Thor would turn into Donald Blake if separated from his hammer for more than a minute

Ben 10 - Everything that Ben can do relies on the Omnitrix. The show tells us that he can be a hero without the watch but everything he accomplishes he does with the Omnitrix. There's also an episode showing that Gwen would've been a better hero if she got her hands on the watch, and so would Grandpa Max

Green Lantern - Everything they can do relies on the ring, and without it they are just average people. Though at least in this case there's an entire corps wielding said rings, and the main characters Hal, Kyle and John are shown to be the best amongst them

Hated Tropes (Hated)changing somenthing to be more "progressive" ends up being a bad thing

Thumbnail
gallery
7.7k Upvotes

Now to be clear,i am not one of these "anti-woke" losers that complain some people exist, and i am also not the type to complain about changing somenthing in a new version or adaptation, however there are cases where it did ended up being a bad idea.

-In the anime of Cowboy Bebop there is the character Gren, despite being short lived the character is very memorable specially thanks to his tragic story.Basically his story was that he was a soldier from the titan war who was a great friend with Vicious(the main bad guy)after the war he was emprisioned thanks to Vicious who testified against him and he was forced to take a experimental drug that caused him hormonal problems, giving him a feminine appearence and even breasts.

In the Netflix live action, for some reasons they decided Gren was going to be non-binary,which wouldn't be a problem(some people believe he was gay in the anime)if it wasn't for the fact that they also removed all the nuances and complexities that made the character memorable and interesting, instead of a tragic war veteran that was betrayed and had his body changed against his will,Gren is just kinda there.

-The original Rugrats cartoon had the couple Betty and Howard,Betty was a big and masculine woman while Howard was a smaller and nervous man,it was a genuine interesting relationship that stood out from the other couples who were the standard straight couple.

In the new series however they replaced Howard with a woman named Trish, two things, first off why? What was the problem with having a woman being the stronger in a straight relationship?Second why does Hollywood seem to think that every tomboy or masculine woman is a lesbian?

Overall not the worst thing but it is jarring that they had a gender reverse roled that was progressive and decided that wasn't enough.

-Oh man, this one pisses me off the most so i am gonna have to break it down

So back in the late 80s and 90s there was this anime called Saint Seiya also knows as Knights of the zodiac,it tells the story of knights who fight for the Goddess Athena to protect earth, being divided in the golden, silver and bronze knights, the anime was a huge hit in latin america and Europe and while it floped in the US it still has a loyal fanbase.

Being a fan myself i can't recommend it enough, now granted the story does have a fair share of flaws, and that's because the author was honestly just making stuff up as he went along(also a lot of side characters are poorly used or even forgotten about)still it is a great story you should check out

But then a couple of years back Netflix got the rights and decided to a 3D reboot,in this reboot they decided to make the story more "american" to try to bring more american viewers, now i could go on and on a big rant about how that was a bad idea and the execution was so terrible that it made me want to strangle someone but this post is about one specific change.

So Saint Seiya has five main characters, those are Pegasus Seiya,Dragon Shiryu,Cygnus Hyoga,Phoenix Ikki and finally Andromeda Shun.

While the other four characters were the standard masculine and brute male characters who were always ready to throw punches,Shun was smaller, more sensitive and even feminine looking,a pacifist who didn't liked fighting, but don't mistake that for weakness because Shun was loyal to his friends and was extremely powerful.

Then Netflix decided to change Shun into a girl named Shaun.

So wait, you have a male character who goes against every male stereotype and you turn him into just another generic female character?

When asked about it,the showrunner Eugene Son said he made that change because there was no girl in the group and having a all boys group wouldn't be acceptable nowadays

First off that's not true because Athena was also part of the main cast, yeah she wasn't the fighting type but she still helped quite a lot in the story even saving the knights on several occasions, second if you wanted to add a girl to the main group why not use Marin or Shaina?Hell,if you were going to change the story anyway why not turn Seiya sister into a knight?

Thankfully this monstrosity was cancelled(so much for trying to bring more fans)

Characters [Mod/Romhack Trope] Genderbent PCs

Thumbnail

When fans of video games want to be able to see playable characters of a different gender, so they use modding or romhacking to make it happen. Not necessarily a gender bend of he original character(s). I just couldn't think of a better name.

  • Persona 3 Reload: Back when Persona 3 was ported to the PSP in the form of Persona 3 Portable, they chose to add a FeMC route to the game. This wasn't just a model change either; Social links were completely different as were several story events and even the personality implied through your dialogue options was notably different from the Male MC. So, when reload got made and didn't include her because "it would be too much work", fans took matters into their own hands by creating a mod that alters events, changes music and even the the opening intro to give the full FeMC experience you might have expected if Portable's FeMC had made it to the new remake. In fact, this is so popular that both 4 and 5 also have people working on FeMC mods.
  • Earthbound: The rest of these are going to be a lot more simple. This is a romhack for the Earthbound that changes Ness's sprite along with altering dialogue to reflect a female Ness. Interestingly, there are essentially two versions of this hack. One that makes the change universal, and one that maintains Ness's original sprite in a certain flashback.
  • Sonic Generations: Several Sonic games have received transfem mods/hacks over the years, from Sonic 2 all the way to Unleashed. But from what I've seen, the Sonic Generations mod feels like the OG that inspired a lot of the others.
  • Final Fantasy: A very niche romhack, I'd imagine, is for the original Final Fantasy on the NES that changes all of the class sprites for the warriors of light and some of the dialogue adressing you, the player, to reflect a female party.

Am I using this post as a way to get other people to find mods/hacks like this for me? Yeah. Just a little. But I also do reallly like this genre of mod and wanna see as many examples of it as I can. I know I missed some obvious examples, but I wanted to include some lesser known examples without bloating the main post too much.

Characters When charcters with disabilities adapt to the situation

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

When a previously able bodied character gets a life altering disability then adapts to the current situation and its like they never had a disability to begin with in fact they somehow got better.

Black Panther lost his leg and to adapt he started running like a panther making him more agile, looked cool af and was able to attack Thanos from his blind spots.

Tank chair(sorry for ai slop) was a great assassin but became a vegetable after a failed execution yet his instincts as the greatest assassin remain sharp despite the fact that he is in a wheel chair and brain dead.

Jonny Joestar lost his ability to walk and yet his passion to find a way to walk again led him to tame a stubborn horse, race across America and create a technique that transcends time and space.

This is so cool to me because they dont let their disabilities stop them from achieving what they want or helping people to the extent that losing a limb makes them realise how precious life is that they are willing to sacrifice even themselves to ensure a goal is reached man Black Panther's death brought tears to my eyes.h

Characters [Hated Trope] Villains who could’ve ended the plot early if they just got off their asses and did things themselves

Thumbnail

- Salem from RWBY. This witch is the most cracked entity on Remnant. She has magic, can control Grimm, and oh yeah, IS LITERALLY UNKILLABLE. No loopholes shown so far. Drop a nuke on her and you buy a few hours at most. And most people don’t have that level of firepower so she revives in literal seconds.

She spends almost the entire series letting her goons do the work when she’s been alive for hundreds to thousands of years and somehow hasn’t won yet when her main enemy’s source of immortality is far more crippling than her’s. Given how old and powerful she is, there’s no reason she hasn’t won yet before the series started besides sheer laziness.

- Thanos in the MCU. It’s a giant meme about how he did nothing for multiple movies in a row. In-universe, years pass as he suffers setback after setback and when he finally gets off his ass for Infinity War it takes him, what, a couple days to get all six stones?

Some people say he was waiting to gather them all up in one fell swoop, but that’s not really true? He had the Mind Stone and loaned it to Loki so he can get the tesseract/space stone. He sent Ronan to get the Power Stone. So clearly he had no issue getting them one at a time, but he still insisted on his goons doing it instead of just doing it himself.

In a world where us trans girls are made out to be disgusting predators and often represented by the caricature “man in a dress stereotype” in media or played for shock value or gross out value, it’s really nice when we get media where the trans girl is just a normal girl and is actually cute and friendly and someone you would actually feel safe around.

Hated Tropes (Hated) The protagonist/character is an obvious self insert fantasy

Thumbnail
gallery
97 Upvotes

Most authors, some even say all, put a little of themselves on their work. Be it taking characteristics of themselves to give to the characters, or using their lived experiences as a basis, it's all really common.

HOWEVER, there's also the times when authors pretty much write what, let's be honest, is basically self "estimulation" with their characters been always correct, beloved or badass in a way that it's clear they see themselves that way or want to be seen that way. Usually comes paired with the Mary Sue/Gary Stu trope. We see it mostly on fanfiction but then again, original/official works cam also be affected. Examples:

- Velma (Velma): Basically the example that brought the trope to the general public discussion. Velma treats the titular character as sympathetic, misunderstood but clearly competent person, when in actuality she is anything but that. She is an asshole, a bad friend and would be the most hated person in her school deservidly if she was real. Combine it with her looking a lot like and been voiced by the creator of the show executive producer, Mindy Kaling (who she herself if a piece of work)... the conclusion is obvious.

- The Rock (most of the relatively recent Rock movies): maybe there was a time he wasn't like this, but it's clear that for a long while any movie that has the Rock as a protagonist makes him this macho superhero that everyone fawns over. Apart from that, the Rock's acting (or lack thereof) makes it so that several of his roles could be exchanged and nothing would differ, since they don't come across as separate characters... but as the Rock. Add to this the fact that on his contract he has a clause that he should never lose a fight (mb, just a rumor), he is often an executive producer on his films and in general, is an attention seeker and you got a very obvious self insert Gary Stu.

Lore (Loved Trope) Aptronyms

Thumbnail
gallery
1.8k Upvotes

Aptronyms are characters whose name is heavily symbolic or represent them as a character. Sometimes it is a subtle play on words, sometimes it’s just a clunky transliteration. Either way, it can help characterize a character and provide more allegorical depth. Authors must be careful not to delve into the realm of cliche, though.

  1. Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter series) His name means Evil Dragon, and he tries really hard to live up to his name.

[Many commenters have pointed out that Darth Vader is not a true aptronym. I stand corrected .]

  1. Darth Vader (Star Wars series) His name means Dark Father, which cleverly conceals one of the biggest reveals in cinema history.

  2. Cthulhu (Lovecraft mythos) Cthulhu may just sound like a nonsense syllable, unpronounceable by a human mouth. The name is derived from the word “cthonic” which means a being that lives under the earth or in the underworld, so an ancient and terrible god that lies dreaming in death at the bottom of the ocean would definitely fit the description.

Pedo island bloodbath- it's actually a surprisingly good vampire hunter book with a 17 year old girl named Clarissa who is being telepathically called by her twin sister ava, who was kidnapped when their parents were murdered by a human sex trafficking vampire when they were 7. Gabe is a 20 year old porter working for Emory Jackson, a billionaire who is running this operation but is unaware of his crimes along with most celebrities and influencers on the yacht. Sven is a journalist trying to expose Emory Jackson of his crimes. And finally a very very old van helsing who is still alive due to dracula blood running through his veins. Dracula is also in this book but he's a prisoner who is forced to watch Emory Jackson create more nascent vampires with Dracula's blood to become sex slaves to sell them to rich pedo politicians and celebrities and dracula fucking hates him for what he's done to him and the nascent vampires who he considers his children, He despises humanity partly because of this and wants to wipe them out. Also has interesting vampire lore with dracula being count Stefan of Moldavia instead of Vlad the impaler and having a hivemind type connection with nascent vampires and able to share memories due to this connection also vampires in this have a waning and blooming season with waning being their physically worse with dracula being stuck in this phase for a long time due to him being kept prisoner and barely being given enough blood to be kept alive, blooming phase being at their absolutely physical peak. Dracula also doesn't need to directly feed to regain his physical peak as when his nascent vampires started to feed on blood he was growing in strength and power slowly but surely to his original peak in his cave where he was imprisoned.

Us- one of my favorite movies with a mediocre name. Us is about a family having to deal with government created clones who are trying to kill them and replace their lives and it is revealed their neighbors were killed by their clones and these clones are all over the United States attempting to kill their real counterparts. I love this movie but the name is just not good.

Lore The franchise already has a saga in the future, but when a special product comes out, it has to be a sequel or only related to the first installment, completely ignoring the lore of the other installments.

1) Avatar.

A new Avatar movie came out, which is Aang's story, and it includes an event mentioned in bonus material from The Legend of Kora.

2) Power Rangers.

A Power Rangers anniversary? If we can't bring back Tommy Oliver, why not make him Rita Repulsa's son, or Rita Repulsa herself (even though she becomes good at one point and even allies herself with another generation of Rangers), or even Lord Zedd (even though he became human at the end of that saga).

3) Yu-Gi-Oh!

5D's was the future of Yu-Gi-Oh!, and after the game got too complicated, just like in Power Rangers, they decided to make it a multiverse to avoid chronological complications and released another movie that's literally about Kaiba and his obsession with playing cards with the Pharaoh.

Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] Shows that abandon the premise almost immediately.

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Dexter: Dexter is a serial killer with rules that prevent him from killing non-criminals. It’s established that he is a sociopath and has no feelings, except almost immediately it’s clear that he does have feelings and he’s not a sociopath. He clearly cares about the wellbeing of his friends and family and just also gets aroused by killing criminals. The premise immediately becomes an off putting vigilante rather than a “good” serial killer.

Gravity Falls: The artwork and first episode set up a spooky forest and a mysterious journal outlining the mysteries of the forest. Yet 90% of the adventures and paranormal activity doesn’t relate to the forest and the journal is mostly irrelevant. Many episodes end up being sci-fi coded rather than paranormal or cryptid. I can forgive this because it’s a silly children’s cartoon but there are clear missed opportunities. The “plot” insofar as there is one progresses in very anti-climactic ways with new characters discovering the paranormal or journal with little to no reaction.

Hated Tropes [Annoying trope] character lose a part of their body in their last fight, just to get a new one the next time we see them. Minus point if the new looks exactly the same

Thor's eye (MCU): his sister ripped his eye in thor Ragnarok and at the end of the movie use the eyepatch of his father. In infinity war he use a bionic one that Rocket gave him, he simply put it in his eye socket, change the color to match with his other eye and is like he never lost the first one.

Naruto's arm (naruto): Naruto and Sasuke lost their arms at the end of their last fight. Sasuke lost that arm and Naruto got a new one, you would believe that the arm should look white like the ones made with Hashirama cells or robotic, but the last cover show that his arm (at least his hand) looks perfectly natural.

Kano's eye (mortal kombat 2021): Sonya blade kill Kano stabbing him in the eye to save her life and get her arcana or whatever. In the next movie he came back to life and instead of use his iconic robotic eye Quan Chi make a new one for him. The red glow was there before so is not even a real change.

Deku's arms (My hero academia): his fight with Shigaraki ends with AFO taking over Tomura's body and Midoriya losing the one for all and his arms. Next chapter and they get him new arms using Eri's horn to rewind them back and end the war. What a way to kill the moment.

Don't watch these at Sunday School

1) While a more sympathetic example than the below, Lucifer's tirle character still retains the CW bait (yes I know it's a Fox/Netflix show) crowd as he's busy solving crimes.

2) Mystery of the Kingdom of God was a 2021 Christian kids film that would've fallen into obscurity beyond fudnamentalist audiences if it wasn't for folks picking up on the Tumblr sexyman vibes of the film's devil.

3) The CEO of Hell Lucifer (or 'Lucy') is an intimidating persona also reflecting the creator's preference for women in business suits.

4) Le génie du mal ('The Spirit of Evil', sculpture on the right) was a sculpture by Guillame Geefs in 1848, meant to replace the sculpture on the left by his brother Joseph, criticised for its distracting beauty and 'unhealthy allure'. He didn't do a good job (or did a VERY good one) taking that into account.

Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Byronic Hero paired with Girly Princess like Girl

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I love the Byronic Hero trope, it's my favorite male archetype, not only because it makes for interesting stories as i prefer when characters are flawed and go through development, i also identify a lot with this type of character(cringe i know), however, it seems these characters are always paired with princess like characters, the light to their darkness, their anchor, the peace to their tumultous soul, i.....hate this, first cuz usually these type of characters usually are mary sues/manic dream pixie girls, they exist just to support another character, second, cuz simply, that's just not my type of woman, i prefer punk tomboy gals. .

The examples are:

Cloud x Aerith from FFVII(from my favorite JRPG)

Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth Lavenza(the oldest example i know of and it's from my favorite book)

Squall x Rinoa from FFVIII(Square did it twice in a roll)

Ichigo x Orihime from Bleach(maybe it's a stretch to count Ichigo as a byronic hero, i dunno)

Anakin x Padmé from Star Wars(a classic from my favorite movies, specially since it got a tragic ending)

Kaito Kumon x Mai Tatsukasa from KR Gaim(one of the more frustrating ones, Kaito abandoned Marika in favor of Mai, though he did not win her in the end)

Erik x Christine from Phantom of the Opera

Kouga Saejima x Kaoru Mitsuki from Garo

Beast x Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Sasuke x Sakura from Naruto

. What do y'all think ?
