Meta I've been banned, why?

Good day everyone!

The mod team has noticed a drastic uptick in insult bot behavior in the sub. I understand reading can be difficult, but of our few rules in place the one that sees the most action is the no personal insults aka Rule 2.

We've been exceedingly lenient with reminders and a dash of warnings. However, the issue persists and pops up in site wide posts that draw in non regular users. Since this is kind of harshing the vibe we're temporarily pausing reminders and warnings and going into straight 7 day bans.

What does personal insult mean?

Any sort of insult directed at the user themselves in response to a comment.

What isn't a personal insult?

Insulting public figures, people not directly related to the conversation thread, etc.

For instance, you can say dems/republicans/breatharianism are idiots. If you're talking to a dem/republican/breatharianism you cannot call them an idiot.

Debate the position or policy, do not disparage the user.

Arts I finished the second draft of the sequel to my debut novel!

Hi all! I'm a local indie author living in Kenmore, WA. Last year I self-published my debut novel, Critical Balance, in August. Since then I've been hard at work on the sequel.

2026 has been a hard year. In January I had to put my sweet cat of 17 years to sleep due to kidney disease. It was awful. Then in the spring we had to move out of our home and find a new one. That took over two months during which time we had to live in Airbnbs and hotels. We finally found a house, moved in, and then my wife got laid off from her job because her position was replaced by AI.

Despite all of that, I managed to finish the first draft of the new novel, Citizen Zero, and now I've finished the second draft. I was hoping to get it published this year, but that doesn't seem realistic at this point, as I still want to send it out to alpha and beta readers, get feedback, and then do at least a couple more revisions. My debut novel went through seven revisions before I felt it was ready to publish.

I'm over the moon that I've made so much progress on this book! It was a lot of work, and at times extremely difficult, but it was also a joy to create. I can't wait for people to read it, and I'm especially looking forward to hearing what readers of the first book think of it.

Politics "Hi, my name is Ally. I'm in the first grade..."

Warning to Seattle parents: Ally Kotetsu, on the left in the video, founded Beyond the Plus, a Seattle-based "radqueer" group advocating for acceptance of minor-attracted people (MAPs) and other paraphilias like zoophiles.

Kotetsu openly admits to sexual attraction to children as young as eight and describes a "friendship" with an eight-year-old girl living in the same apartment building in blog posts. Ally's leaked statements about the child are deeply disturbing and should alarm any parent: 1, 2

More sickening archived content published by this individual: https://allykotetsu.com/archives/

I tried posting this in the main Seattle subreddit. The post was heavily downvoted, then removed by moderators within ten minutes on the grounds that it wasn't related to Seattle.

A Seattle resident who openly advocates for acceptance of sexual attraction to children, founded a Seattle-based organization to promote that acceptance, and who currently facilitates a community network for Seattle-area "MAPs" seems pretty relevant to Seattle, doesn't it?

Wouldn't Seattle parents want to know about this? If this isn't relevant to the community, what is?

Are King County candidates submitting AI slop to the voter guide? Analyzing statements

• Upvotes

While reading through this year's voter guide I couldn't stop seeing the amount of "em dashes" and sentence structures that are dead giveaways of AI writing. I decided to run each candidate's statement through an AI writing detection agent and see just how lazy the candidates this year were. The agent was made to analyze each statement for AI writing indicators, log the justification for review, and give the statement a score between 1 and 100. A "50" score is basically a coin-flip between being AI and human written.

Yes, I fully realize the irony in posting an AI analysis of this... but otherwise I'd just be throwing darts at my own interpretation.

Results: most statements were analyzed as being human or consultant-written, though there are some egregious outliers. Of 151 candidate statements on King County ballots this November, nineteen were scored as having some "better than coin flip" likelihood of AI content, and five were scored as being highly likely as near-entirely AI written.

Here's the breakdown of the "better than a coin flip" cases:

Score Candidate Race Giveaways and counter-evidence
88 Mary Silva (GOP) U.S. House 1 The strongest set of model markers in either guide: “Furthermore,”, “robust federal investments”, “True economic resilience requires a foundation of security”, “secure and sovereign”, “self-sustaining marketplace rooted right here”, and a “Together, we can” close. Abstract, few specifics.
85 Mitch Greene District Court Southwest 3 Relentless triads with no idiosyncrasy: “respect” appears five times and “fairness” and “impartial” three times each, from “fairness, integrity, and respect” to “fairness, respect, and impartiality”; every sentence is interchangeable boilerplate.
80 Nirav Sheth (GOP) U.S. House 7 Speech-style antitheses (“not a gift—it is a promise worth fighting for”, “I didn’t just come to this country”) and cinematic phrasing (“the fading light of opportunity”). Rough, human lines (“Real Solutions to help homeless people & Energy Independence”) are spliced in, which fits an AI draft edited by the candidate.
80 Tricia Grove Johnson District Court Southeast 3 Textbook model structure: three capitalized pillars, each defined in one sentence (“Accountability ensures safer communities. Compassion recognizes the humanity…”), plus “a rare, comprehensive understanding” and “rooted in the idea that”.
75 Michael Rutland (GOP) LD 30 Senate Wall-to-wall parallelism: “deserve relief, accountability, and leaders who…”, “Every child deserves… every parent deserves…”, “balance, common sense, and a new direction”. Almost no concrete detail.
72 Dominique M Scarimbolo Assessor Model scaffolding (“far more than an appraiser—”, “isn’t about… It’s about”, “something many candidates cannot claim:”, “results—not intentions”) mixed with human grammar slips, consistent with an AI draft heavily edited.
72 Evon McCorkle (Ind) LD 37 House Pos. 2 Formulaic throughout (“listens, understands struggle, and fights for real solutions”; “heard, respected, and represented”) with a generic bio. A missing dash leaves a run-on (“political machines I’m running”), as if a dash were deleted.
68 Claudia Kauffman (Dem) LD 47 Senate Shifted from a plain 2022 statement to model register: “at a crossroads”, “my priority remains clear:”, “robust enough to catch those falling behind”, “the standard, not the exception”.
68 Nick Duda County Council 8 Several signature turns: “Whether you’re a young person…, a parent…, or a longtime resident”, “Progress isn’t just about spending more; progress is about”, “uncomfortable, but honest facts”. Data claims are specific.
65 Fa’amomoi Masaniai, Jr. District Court Southwest 4 Sharp shift from his rough 2022 statement to balanced aphorisms (“Access to justice is paramount”, “Justice is about more than punishment.”).
65 Michael Rosen (Ind) LD 41 House Pos. 2 Spaced em dash pivot (“lose its way — Olympia keeps spending more”), “worse, not better”, and back-to-back triads (“brings expertise, demands fiscal discipline, and fights for solutions”).
65 Shantrice Anderson Seattle Municipal Court 6 Dense model vocabulary (“helped underscore my priorities:”, “truly reflective of this diverse and vibrant city”, “firmly rooted in the law yet echo the values”) and an awkward fronted opening clause.
65 Sharon Tomiko Santos (Dem) LD 37 House Pos. 1 Almost no specifics from a longtime incumbent; abstract phrasing (“Our path forward requires”, “My deep community roots shape my commitment”, “resilient, inclusive Washington”). Her 2022 statement was concrete and personal.
65 Spencer Meline (GOP) U.S. House 8 Smooth and generic (“the American Dream is slipping away”, “play by the rules”); a six-item gerund list; bio in third person with a fragment.
62 Doug Basler (GOP) U.S. House 9 Much smoother than his rougher 2022 statement: stacked lists (“work, build, serve, and thrive”), spaced em dashes, and tidy pivots (“may sound good, but in practice”). Some specifics (Climate Commitment Act) keep it from the top tier.
62 Mary Anito (Dem) LD 34 House Pos. 2 Corporate abstractions (“drive results, and enact meaningful change”, “not mutually exclusive”) and a long participial sentence. A typed hyphen-dash and the Spanish line are human touches.
60 Tamara Stramel (Dem) LD 31 Senate Classic model turn (“aren’t abstract policy debates to me; they are my life”) and stacked triads, but real personal details (Lake Tapps, two boys).
55 Joshua C. Harris District Court Southeast 5 Model cadence (“defined by respect—not intimidation”, “discipline, sound judgment, and accountability under pressure”), but backed by specific service details.
55 Yuri Marinchik (GOP) LD 33 House Pos. 2 Spaced em dashes and slogans (“I am not a career politician — I am one of you”); a dangling “they” suggests a longer draft was cut down; “self-realization” reads like translation.

Final thoughts: AI-sounding is not the same as AI, and this analysis could be wrong. While most of these people just probably suck, I am sure there are a few who were miscategorized. Additionally there are no laws or WA state rules that require AI drafted content from being disclosed in the voter guide (though there is law around using AI images, audio, or video in campaigning). Either way it's something that is probably going to keep getting worse over the years, so we better get used to it.

PS GO VOTE!

Government What is City Council actually doing?

Hi friends, I’m working on a project that can help you get a sense of what your councilperson or the mayor has been doing (legislatively) during their term. The idea is to score and rate their work like baseball players are scored, wherein they get points based on the quality and quantity of their legislative achievements. It makes their tenure easier to understand from a 10,000 ft. view. You can see the council's effect on citywide stats like crime rate or consumer prices, homelessness, etc.

The goal is to make the underlying records more accessible so people can form their own judgments. It’s still a work in progress, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on it and what it's missing or hard to understand or whatever.

Hey everyone my dog Ella has been missing since 3/20 when her foster mom took her for a walk in Cowen Park the night before I was supposed to get her back and she ran away from the foster. On 4/20 someone picked her up at a gas station and attempted to drive her home but only made it by big whale consignment on Aurora Ave. She has been on the streets ever since and I can’t find her, I miss her a whole lot! Please bring Ella home! My phone number is (206) 380-0543 and my name is Ashle. If you have seen her or have any information please call or text. She may be still wearing her blue sweater.

Business 🎉 We Just Scooped Dog Poop From Our 300,000th Yard! Thank You, Seattle! 💩

Post image

hey everyone! I’m the owner of Swoop Scoop, the local pooper scooper service, & I just wanted to tell everyone on here THANK YOU!

we recently passed 300,000 yards cleaned, and it came from support from the dog lovers here in town.

i started this business with a friend 6 years ago and still remember it like it was yesterday. I was doing social work and just trying to make some extra money on the side. But I never imagined it would turn into what it is today. What started as me out cleaning the yards doing the work myself turned into a real company that now employs over 25 amazing team members.

along the way, I also came to realize just how much this service actually helps people. I've been fortunate enough to have so many conversations with you guys in your yards, hearing about your lives, what you're going through, and why you need our help. From elderly homeowners and adults with disabilities to people recovering from surgery, busy families, and people working long hours. i would say that impact is definitely what keeps us going.

i know scooping dog poop is not exactly the most glamorous business in the world, but building something useful for people has been incredibly meaningful. And I've found our workers are very proud of what they do, too. It's about an honest of a living as it gets.

so again, thank you to everyone in Seattle who has trusted us, supported us, referred us, or even just encouraged us along the way. We really do appreciate it! Cheers to the next 300,000! 🙂

Question Affordable gyms near downtown

Anyone know of affordable gyms near downtown?

I just moved to Belltown and am looking for a small gym with flexible hours and minimal equipment. I run, bike, and, swim for cardio, so I’m really only looking for barbells and racks.

Lmk if you have any recommendations!
