The situation:
I am a 38M with a good job, but I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world and I do not have a lot of disposable income, nor am I able to save to a great extent. I work, on average, 52 hours per week, but some weeks are higher and others are a lot less. I rent a 2-bedroom apartment with a female housemate. My housemate is a high-powered career woman in a very competitive field, where long hours are the norm and sleepless nights are a regular occurrence. She has asked me not to have people over at night, as she needs her rest when she can get it, and I respect that. It just means that hookups typically have to happen elsewhere
I am very tall, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and I actively compete in multiple sports. I am an experienced and generous lover. Writing it makes me feel like a dickhead, but I am generally described as charismatic and handsome, and I get a fair bit of sexual and romantic interest.
I've had years of non-serious relationships at this point, and I was not looking for a long-term relationship before I met GF, but she made me want to change all that. 6 months ago she joined one of my sports clubs and I asked for her number. She came with me and my teammates to dinner after practices, and I started giving her rides between practice, dinner and her place.
Early on, she said to me "You're flirting with me," which was true. She said "I'm not looking for a boyfriend right now."
I told her, "Would you like me to stop flirting with you, then?" to which she didn't answer.
We texted back and forth and saw each other at practice for a while before she asked if I would come with her to a book fair. We had a few casual one-on-one meetups where we were getting to know one another. Nothing physical, beyond my holding her hand. I told her about my dating history. She told me about hers. She wanted to know about the self-harm scars that she saw on my arm.
On one of our meetups, she told me, "I have a friend-with-benefits." I told her that I didn't judge her for it. But when planning our next meetup, a Friday afternoon at an arts-and-crafts workshop, she told me that she would have leave early because she was meeting someone else that night. I slept on it, and then texted her back,
"Is it your friend-with-benefits?"
She said yes.
I told her, "I'm sorry. I'm not comfortable going out with someone and then handing her off to another man in the evening."
She said she would change her plans that night to have dinner with me instead.
For me, it was a really nice date. I look back on it romantically. She doesn't. We went to the workshop together (not my thing but it was fun to try something new) and I took her to dinner. At dinner, I asked her whether she wanted to have an open relationship, or whether she wanted to have only one man in her life. At that time, I still considered myself uncommitted, and I was in several casual relationships. She said that she would like a real relationship with me. I asked, "Boyfriend and girlfriend?" and she agreed, saying that she would start distancing herself from her FWB.
I confessed to GF that I have quite a high sex drive. GF is a virgin, and so I communicated my expectation that I am not looking to wait for marriage for sex. I would do my best to be patient with her, but I explained that one serious relationship in my past had nearly ended over it.
As I was driving her home, it started to hail. I had to park my car under some thick trees for shelter while we waited it out. We reached for one another and took turns touching one another, going down on one another, but strangely, she was so hesitant to kiss me. Eventually she did, but only after overcoming a lot of hesitation. For me, it was very romantic, but again, she didn't feel the same way.
That same night, I texted the other women in my life and amicably (for the most part) agreed that it was time to move on. I haven't texted or heard from any of them since.
...
Two months later, GF and I were on an interstate road trip. I was travelling for sport, she wanted to come with me, and I really was excited to have her come along. I did all the driving while she sat next to me, took care of what audiobook or podcast to listen to, and did some arts-and-crafts. When I was busy with my sports commitments in the daytime, she would attend free tours or workshops, and then I would take her out for dinner. Every night, I gave her oral sex. I am quite an experienced lover, and to be honest, I love giving oral, and I like to take my time doing it. She reciprocated on the first night, but not on any of the subsequent evenings, saying she was too tired.
It was during this trip that I realised that I had fallen in love with her. I realised that she has a unique way of calming my fire, soothing my heart and mind. Coming back to her at the end of each day felt like coming home.
The last night of our road trip, I booked a very romantic, rustic night at a nice place in the country. We went to dinner at a country pub, and had some drinks and chatted with the patrons afterwards. While we were drinking and chatting, she mentioned to me that FWB had been texting her. I have no idea why she brought it up. It seemed out of the blue.
I said, "I thought you two were over."
"We haven't seen each other," was her reply.
I took her back to our luxuriously-appointed room. She asked if I would massage her back. I happily obliged. She fell asleep before it could go anywhere else.
I went to sleep thinking about her and her FWB.
In the morning, I got up and went for a long walk alone along the river, across the floodplain, and through the fields. I texted her so that she knew I was okay.
In the car, I told her about how I felt. I didn't tell her that I had fallen in love with her. Instead, I told her that I was left disappointed by the night before. Emotionally, by the revelation that she was still regularly texting her FWB, and physically by her lack of reciprocation. I explained that I had done a lot of driving and a lot of sports, and I could have used some physical attention too. She hadn't gone down on me since the first night of our trip. Given that I had paid for every date in our relationship to that point, including an expensive birthday gift, I told her that I felt as though I was being taken-advantage-of.
"How do you feel about me?" I asked.
"I don't know," she responded.
"Compared to FWB."
"About the same," she said.
I stopped talking. I pulled over. Told her I needed a moment. Walked fifty meters away to where she couldn't see, and I cried.
...
Another month on, and GF and I were on another road trip. This time to visit my elderly, demented mother. She had previously cried when I told her about my mother, and we had been planning on vising her together.
We stayed the night in a nearby small town, and we had dinner at a beautiful restaurant built in an old trainyard. Live music, space heaters and blankets. Cosy. Romantic. We walked back to our motel where we had wonderful mutual oral sex, and drifted off to sleep in one another's arms.
One quirk I have is genuine sexsomnia. That means I perform sex acts in my sleep. It only happens when I'm sharing my bed. Ex-girfriends have all commented on it, and all enjoyed it. I'm also somnambulant very very rarely. I had warned GF a long time ago about it, and told her that if I ever try to do something to her in my sleep, she should hit me HARD to wake me up.
In the early hours of the morning. I woke up on top of GF. She was pushing me away. I rolled off of her, and cuddled her. I apologised profusely.
She said, "Actually, it was kind of nice," and then she asked me to try again. While conscious this time.
That morning, we started working together to help her lose her virginity. But I'm a big guy, and she's a small, inexperienced girl. Things didn't go smoothly. We had to stop. But we agreed that we would try again in the future. I was over the moon.
...
The next few months involved good oral sex, many more (unsuccessful) attempts at taking her virginity, and lots of fun dates. We gradually introduced one another to our friends, and we got along well. On one memorable evening, after I dropped her home after practice, she hugged me and said, "You're the best boyfriend."
She had one close friend in particular that was surprised to find out she now had a boyfriend. He greeted me awkwardly, said hello, but didn't seem to have much to do with me at all. That's okay, not everyone likes talking, and not everyone is comfortable when meeting new people. I wanted to impress him, as I knew he and GF were particularly close; every Sunday evening she had been setting aside a few hours to text him.
A couple of weeks later, he met with GF for dinner and handed him a typed letter, in which he confessed his love for her. GF told me that night. She said she didn't know what to tell him.
"Wow. Giving you that letter when he knows you have a boyfriend is a bit of a dick move. Just tell him that you value him as a friend, but it's not going to happen, so he needs to move on. Tell him you are happy with your current boyfriend," I suggested.
"Am I happy with my current boyfriend?" she asked me.
I was stunned. Was she joking? Things had been going so well.
"I've never felt a spark or butterflies with you. I mostly like being around you, but I don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling. I don't like your temper," she clarified. "Like that time you yelled at another driver."
"And so you'll refuse to tell him that you're happy with me?" I asked.
"Well, I won't tell him if it isn't true," was her reply.
"I can work on my temper. I'll do my best not to shout at other drivers."
And so the weeks and months went on. She kept in touch with her friend. She did tell him "Let's just be friends," but in the back of my mind, I worried that she might still be leading him along. I also had a growing feeling that I was just a boyfriend of convenience; a wallet and a taxi.
In terms of our sex lives, things were pretty steady. On one date night, she told me, "I don't want you to try to put it in tonight." I didn't question why she said that. I thought she might just be tired. We had a fun night regardless, and I didn't think anything of it. I didn't know yet that we'd actually never try again.
The next week, we had a romantic date night, and I booked a hotel. I went down on her, and gave her a series of rolling orgasms, one transitioning into the next for about fifteen minutes. I'd never seen anything like it. It was so exciting. But when it was her turn to reciprocate, she fell asleep. Frustrated, I left her asleep on the bed, got dressed and sat on the couch while playing on my phone. GF lives at home and her mum has a strict curfew, so when it was time to leave, I woke her up, we checked out and I drove her home. I was feeling bitter, agitated and taken-advantage-of.
"I'll make it up to you," she said.
I'd heard that one so many times by now.
"When?" I replied bitterly.
The next day I took her to practice. Afterwards, when I drove her home, she motioned as if to give me a blowjob in the car. I said "No." I was still bitter from the night before, and the last time she had tried to give me a blowjob after practice, she had given up, complaining that my dick "smelled like a public toilet." There are no showers at practice.
...
The following week, the mounting tension came to a head. GF had bought tickets with her in-love-with-her friend, to see a musical in the evening. Musicals aren't my thing, and seeing an opportunity for a bit of fun, I asked, "How about when the show is over, I pick you up from the theatre and we stay somewhere together"
"But then I won't have enough time with my friend!" she complained.
When the day came, I felt like shit. Call me possessive, but I was totally uncomfortable with a man who had just recently professed love for my GF sharing a romantic evening date with her. But I felt I couldn't say anything. GF had already been calling me "controlling" because I had issues with his love letter, and issues with her still-regularly-messaging FWB. So I grit my teeth.
Since she was going downtown, I found an excuse to go downtown that evening as well. I met with a former colleague, and we had a drink together. I took a photo of our drinks with a beautiful city view in the background, and I sent it to GF. "Wish you were here," I texted. She didn't reply until after midnight.
She skipped practice the next day. I was worried.
I saw her the day after that. She asked if I had deliberately tried to make her jealous with the photo I had sent her. I admitted, "That was part of it, yes. I wanted to see whether you cared. I also hoped I might be able to meet up with you and your friend after the musical, since we were all downtown together."
"So you did it on purpose. To make me jealous, to hurt me," she said. She started crying uncontrollably. "Was it worth it?" she asked again and again. I acknowledged what she was feeling, said that jealousy is a normal emotion to have, and doesn't necessarily mean being hurt. I said I was sorry that I had hurt her. Eventually she settled and I took her home.
Late that night, I received a text. "I'm still pissed, just so you know."
And I let loose.
I decided to let all my pent-up feelings out in a series of lengthy (by man standards) messages. I wrote about how I felt about the man she had gone to the musical with, I wrote about how I felt about her staying in touch with her FWB. I complained how he texted her things like "I didn't mean to get in your way" while continuing to stay in touch. I asked how she would feel if I treated her the same way. I told her that the jealousy she felt about the drink photograph was just a fraction of the feelings I had been bottling up for months. I called her selfish, inconsiderate and unapologetic. But I bookended the messages with statements of affirmation and love. I wanted to make it clear that I was getting something off my chest.
The next morning, I woke up to a single message. "You're right. I'm done." I didn't even realise I had been blocked. I'd never been blocked before.
That morning I had a sports meet that I had organised. While I drove, I started to cry. I couldn't see the road. I had to pull over. I didn't make it to the event. I bought flowers, a snack, wrote her a letter of apology, and dropped them off at GF's work. She was not happy to see me. I left.
The next day, I skipped practice to visit her at work again. She had guessed that I'd come again. I handed her another rose, a handwritten letter and a snack. She tried to give back all of the gifts I had bought for her since we started dating. I told her to keep them. She stood in front of me while texting her FWB to come and pick her up after work. My heart was breaking.
But we talked. After her shift, we sat and talked. We agreed that I would work on my problems. I drove her home. She asked me to go down on her in the car. She cried out my name while she came, and she whispered to me softly in the afterglow, "I don't want to lose you."
I visited her at work the next day as her shift was ending, a red rose, snack and a third letter in hand. After the previous night, I thought she'd be happy to see me. "You must have forgotten to unblock me," I said with a smile, as I handed her the gifts.
She looked at me in the eyes and said, "I want to break up."
I immediately got weak in the knees. "What about last night? I thought we made a plan to get through this."
"I went soft on you," she explained. "I can't be with someone who tries to hurt me deliberately."
I watched her receive more texts from her FWB. It looked like he had sent about fifty that day.
Amongst all the messages, he had me "crazy jealous," said that keeping in touch with him was fine because they weren't "doing anything anymore", and then backtracked, saying "it's normal to stay friends with a FWB when you start seeing someone."
Maybe that's true for him? Was he just trying to manipulate her back into his bed? But it certainly wasn't the expectation that the relationship between my GF and I was built on. I had bid farewell to my old flings months ago. Was I really wrong by expecting the same? I started to question myself.
GF told me that "she had felt pressured to have sex with me, and to give her virginity to me." I was in shock. I thought it had been something that we had agreed to do together. She had seemed so eager. Had I misread her? Or was she retconning our relationship?
GF and I talked. I hate to admit it but I begged. We hugged. I cried in front of her. Once again, I drove her home. Once again, we had oral sex in the car. This time she reciprocated.
The next day, we were meant to go on an overnight trip to visit my mother again. She cancelled and I went alone.
...
Another week has passed now. I'm trying strategies to manage my feelings, like writing them down in my notes. But I'm still not sleeping well, and I've had nightmares about my GF and her FWB. She's agreed to no longer go out with her in-love-with-her friend on evening dates alone. I even met up with him to apologise for what I had written about him (she sent him the messages). She's also agreed to stop texting her FWB for two months.
But why only two months? It makes me really uneasy. I feel like a weight is hanging over me while I count down the days until they're texting again. GF and I have spoken about him at length, and now I really don't like him. It really sounds like he took advantage of her vulnerability during difficult parts of her life, and has cultivated an emotional dependence in him. But ultimately she is an adult, responsible for her own actions, whether manipulated into those actions or not. GF said she finds not having him available for texting very difficult. But I know she has other friends that aren't so problematic, and she has me. Both GF and FWB knew I didn't want them to stay in contact, but both of them kept doing it.
We've been communicating better. We've been speaking more about the things we like and the things which upset us. She likes it when I tell her that I love her (though she still hasn't said it back). She doesn't like it when I talk about the future in romantic terms. That makes her feel pressured. That's okay. I can work with that. She said she never felt any pressure for sex from her FWB. But FWB was never exclusive with her. It's easy to not feel pressure when you can just find intimacy in someone else. I know, I've been there. GF was just one of several women FWB was sleeping with. GF confirmed this.
Last night I drove her home from her to and from practice, and as I was carrying her bags to her door at the end of the night, she said, "I'm going to be really busy for the next couple of months, until January (it's now October). I'll really only see you at practice, once per week, or when you visit me at work."
I replied, "When you were with FWB, you had quality time alone with him every second Friday. Is it really fair for me to expect never being alone with you for two-and-a-half months?" I am mindful that my birthday, Christmas and the New Year all fall in this period. Am I really going to be spending the holiday season alone?
She got suddenly defensive. "What do you want me to do!? I'm so tired! Do you want me to drink ten cans of Red Bull before seeing you?"
"Of course not, I want you to be happy and healthy."
But something about it doesn't feel genuine to me. I know her schedule pretty well. She doesn't have any classes over the holidays. Even during the semester, a quick look at her schedule shows that her work hours plus study hours are about equivalent to my working hours. If I can make the time for her, why is she saying she won't be able to make the time for me? I don't think she's lying at all, but I think she may be trying to shield me from the way she really feels.
My question:
So I'm thinking of pulling back from our relationship a little and seeing what happens. I have plenty of work, sport, and volunteering things coming up that will keep me busy. I'm lamenting my lack of a sex life, and I'm lamenting having fallen in love only to have my heart broken.
My plan is to text her less. I'll only text her outside of my (longer than typical) work hours. I will stop visiting her with snacks at work on weekends. I'll stop paying for meals, treats and drinks. I'll stop booking hotels for us to stay at. What about giving her rides to and from practice? Carrying her bags for her and opening doors for her? It's difficult for me, because I naturally want to keep doing these things. Loving her comes very naturally.
Is the right approach? Do you think there is something I've missed? Perhaps you think I'm being too controlling and jealous. I'd appreciate good-faith feedback. I'm really at a loss here.
TLDR: After 6 months with my (38M) GF (29F), I feel like we're drifting apart. I love her, but is it unrequited? A wedge has formed between us due to her staying in touch with a FWB. Do I pull back, cut my losses, or something else? I don't want to lose her.
