Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - October 11, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Discussion Does anyone not enjoy their SK? Hoping someone can relate.

Throw away account so I don't hurt anyone's feelings. Does anyone not get much joy out of having a SK?

I have a preteen SD and she's a good kid. I never wanted kids. My husband is a great dad and I'm lucky for my situation. I've been in her life about 6 years and married for 3.

We have her 50/50 and I find myself dreading the time she's here. Our whole routine changes and everything becomes about her. She's messy and her dad and I have different ideas of what we think is acceptable. When she's not here, they call every day. I feel like there's never a break. She doesn't do anything terrible, just typical annoying kid things. I'm very lucky.

I feel terrible that I don't enjoy her. I will always take care of her and be kind to her but I haven't grown to enjoy or even really like her like I was hoping.

When she goes back to her moms her dad gets sad and misses her. I try to be supportive but I don't feel that way at all.

Maybe I was naive in thinking this would get easier, but as time has gone on it has gotten harder for me. Yes I knew he had a kids when I married him, I just thought she'd grow on me more. I feel awful about that.

Can anyone relate?

Advice Am I wrong for setting a boundary about childcare?

My boyfriend (30M) and I (30F) have been together for almost three years. When we first started dating, he was upfront with me that his ex was pregnant, but he wasn't sure if the baby was his. I accepted the situation, and a paternity test eventually confirmed that he was the father. I was still willing to accept both of them as part of my life. Initially, my boyfriend and his child's mother had an arrangement where they each had the them for a week at a time. Eventually, my boyfriend and I moved in together, and he started having trouble finding childcare during his custody time. At first, he told me he didn't want me to have to take on that responsibility. However, things eventually reached a point where he was at risk of losing his job because he couldn't find anyone to provide childcare. I offered to help in that emergency situation because I work from home overnight and thought I could manage it. Unfortunately, what started as occasional help gradually became an expectation that I would watch his child whenever the child was with us for the week.
Then I got pregnant.
Around the halfway point of my pregnancy, I repeatedly communicated that once our baby was born, I wouldn't be able to take responsibility for both a toddler and a newborn. I continued providing childcare throughout my entire pregnancy, literally until the week before I gave birth, but I was clear that things would need to change after the baby arrived.
Our baby is now here and I've maintained that boundary because I know my limits and if I made everyone else happy and just gave in, I wouldn’t be mentally okay. My boyfriend is having to find childcare again and sometimes he struggles to find someone.
The part that's making this difficult is that, over time, my boyfriend, his family, and even his child’s mother have come to view me as another parent to them. My boyfriend has specifically told me that he wants me to look at them as if they are my own child and that all three of us are their parents.
I genuinely love that little kid, but I never intended to become their primary caregiver during my boyfriend's custody time and I feel like helping out in an emergency somehow turned into an obligation.
Now I feel guilty because everyone seems to have gotten accustomed to me taking care of them,
and my decision to stop has created a problem for everyone else and his family has become distant from me when before, we were close.
I love my boyfriend and I understand that his kid is part of his life. I'm not asking him to choose between his children. I'm simply trying to protect my own well-being and make sure I can take care of my newborn.
Am I wrong for maintaining this boundary, even though it means my boyfriend has to figure out childcare himself? How do I navigate this without being made to feel like I'm abandoning his child?

Vent Need to vent 😭

I just need a moment to vent. I would LOVE to be like the cool aunt figure. I didn't want the additional emotional and physical labor of being a core attachment & stability figure for two kids that aren't mine. But, that's not the hand I was dealt. We have 50/50.

There is so much backstory about mom i don't care to get into, but she seems to have recently acquired a new boyfriend, and is now leaving the kids (4 and 12) home alone all the time. This is not illegal. She denies it. Nothing can really be done - the GAL and his attorney have been informed, but GAL has been pretty useless. CPS won't do anything unless kids get hurt. We're not sure if she's leaving my stepkids overnight (4 and 12, and she has an older daughter that is 14) but oldest daughter confirmed that she is left home alone all night and "will be fine" (he has no legal rights to her even though he raised her, which is a whole other sad story).

My SD12 now calls both of us multiple times in the evening/night just to chat. She's cooking for the toddler and putting her to bed. Oldest daughter may be around, but also partially lives with her GF it seems like, so we're not sure. There's literally nothing we can do. If you confront mom, she'll say she's home and child is lying. It's nuts. It's breaking my heart and he's constantly worried about his kids while they're there. Obviously there have been some behavioral issues that have cropped up since mom went AWOL, but we're dealing with it. I just can't even begin to imagine just ditching my kids home alone all the time rather than dropping them off with their orher parent. The craziest part is, her boyfriend lives one town past us, so she could literally drop them on her way there without even going out of the way. Instead they're home alone 20 minutes from a parent for God knows how long what seems like daily. Ahhhhh.

Vent Feels like I’m having constant fights with my wife over stepson

wife and I had over how I handled a chore situation with my 12-year-old stepson.
Here is what happened: The kitchen trash was completely full—partially because he had just tossed an empty package of Oreos right on top instead of taking it out. Instead of taking it outside like he's supposed to, he tried to wedge a new trash bag right next to the full one so he could keep piling stuff in.

I wasn't mad or yelling—I was just being straightforward and direct. I asked him what he was doing and told him, "Hey, don't just put another bag there, take the full one out." He didn't really say anything back; he just sat down and went back to his Oreos. At that point, his mom stepped in and told him to go take it out right now.

Afterward, my wife brought it up to me and asked if I was saying those things with "kindness" or if I could explain it better to him. I told her I didn't feel like I needed to soften my approach or give a deep explanation—I was just giving him direction and correcting him on a basic process he already knows. Her response was that I shouldn't "assume things" about what he understands.

This is a recurring theme for us. My wife often says I'm "too hard" on him, but he has always been used to a softer, more chill parenting style. From my end, I feel like I'm just being a parent by stepping up to correct him when he tries to bypass a basic chore.
I don't think it's unreasonable to give a 12-year-old a direct instruction without wrapping it in extra niceties, but since he's used to a softer approach, it constantly creates friction between my wife and me.

And I feel like compared to the way I was raised. I’m a whole lot softer than my parents were. And I feel like they were pretty reasonable parents. My stepson is a person that will talk back to his mom and other things, just act out and not listen when you tell him to stop it’ll take a few tries. None of that would fly in my household growing up.

JustBMThings Constantly Interrupted FT Calls with SK

• Upvotes

DH and I try to call my SS (7) once a week since we do one week on and one week off. His mom calls us once a week too.

When his mom calls, we allow him to have that conversation on his own without interjecting or speaking on his behalf. When we call, we are not given that same consideration. Every question is answered by his mom, step-dad, and whoever else is around him at the time.

It doesn't seem to bother him and he just happily stays quiet and nods along.

This isn't something we can necessarily bring up because she gets VERY defensive, no matter how politely we word our requests, and choosing to stop calling him may give him a negative impression about how we feel about him (or not, who knows) so this feels like a lose-lose battle.

It's just so annoying.

Advice Stepparents who live separately from their spouse, would you recommend it?

Hi all, I apologize in advance for the long post, but hope that some will take the time to read and offer advice. I’ve posted in here before, and I’m hoping to hear from people who have been in a similar situation.

I (36F) am married to my husband (41M), who has two children, my stepson (20M) and stepdaughter (18F). They live with us full-time. Their mother is mostly absent and doesn’t contribute financially towards them. I pay half of our household expenses and rent. My husband and I have discussed my stepson starting to contribute towards the household when he turns 21. He currently works a low-paying job, while my stepdaughter is still in school.

The issue is that I’m struggling with our living arrangement, and I’m starting to wonder whether living separately from my husband might be the only way to preserve our marriage. Before moving in with my husband, I lived alone. I had my own space, privacy and routine. Now, I live in a house with two young adults, and my stepdaughter is home probably 99% of the time. She is very introverted and a homebody, and rarely goes out apart from occasional visits to her boyfriend.

Because she is so introverted, things are still extremely awkward between us. We’ve lived together for almost three years, and there is still a lot of distance between me and the children. We’re civil with each other, but we don’t have much of a relationship. I know I’m also introverted, and I don’t always know how to bridge that gap. I’m not expecting us to become a close mother-daughter family, but the constant proximity without much connection is mentally draining. I often feel like I’m always “on”, and because my stepdaughter is nearly always home, I rarely feel like I have my husband or our home to myself.

I also notice that when my husband and the children are together without me, they seem more relaxed and comfortable with each other. When I’m there, things can feel awkward. I know they have a history and bond that I wasn’t part of, but it can leave me feeling like an outsider in my own home. The reality is that, given the current job and financial situation, I can see these children living with us well into their twenties. I don’t want to throw them out or make them feel unwelcome, but the thought of living this way for another four to six years, or even longer, is honestly nerve-wracking.

The other issue is that my marriage is already struggling. I don’t always feel emotionally supported by my husband, and I’ve increasingly realised that the family dynamic is taking a toll on me. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep trying to adjust myself to a living situation that I fundamentally don’t enjoy. I recently raised the possibility of getting my own place while remaining married. I’ve lived alone before, and part of me misses having that independence and peace. I wonder whether having our own spaces, while still spending time together as a couple, could give our marriage a chance to recover.

My husband was very upset and said that if we lived separately, we might as well get divorced. So now I’m faced with the possibility that the choice is to continue living this way or end the marriage. I’m torn because part of me wants a life with just my husband, but another part of me genuinely wants to be on my own. I don’t know whether living separately would help us reconnect or simply delay the inevitable.

For those of you who are married to parents and have chosen to live separately, how has it worked for you? Did having your own space improve your relationship, or did the distance create more problems? Do you feel it’s possible to maintain a healthy marriage this way, particularly when the main issue is the family living arrangement? I’d especially appreciate hearing from people who made this decision while they still loved their spouse but realised that living together was making them unhappy. Did you regret it, or did it give you the breathing room you needed?

Thank you.

Advice My husband says the reason why we don’t plan trips it’s cause it’s complicated with his daughter!?

so we see his daughter every other weekends and Mondays . I feel bad that she has to spend more time with her mum than her father. his ex wife called him today saying that in the summer she’s not able to take complete 3 weeks off and needs his support To cover at least one week. my problem is i don’t ask but I get disappointed when he doesn’t do stuff for me. we are married a year and still didn’t go on honeymoon. I waited waited nothing from his side about traveling. so I planned a trip and went alone which was not a holiday but to visit my parents. now I got an opportunity to travel with a friend ans I told him I really want to go and he got disappointed that he wants this trip with me. I said you only talk and nothing happens. He said he’s bad at planning and I should do the planning. I’m scared to plan something and get disappointed. I mean in our wedding anniversary he couldn’t take the day off. I took the day off but then decided to go back to work cos what’s the point!?
the wedding ceremony was not easy to plan as well. Everytime I come up with a date then he has something that day. So I just dropped it. Now he’s hurt and saying that he can’t believe I said that he will disappoint me even in the future cos I don’t believe he will plan a trip for me And saying one of the reason is his daughter And most of her holidays she spent with her mum. We barely have her in holidays.

Vent Im not happy when his daughter is around

Well, as the title says really....and I don't know what to do with or about it.

She is a lovely girl, 7. She is polite, pleasant, well behaved. You couldn't ask for better, really.

I am F34 (childless - semi-choice, semi-circumstance) and my partner is M33. We live together.

She doesn't spend much time with us because of an extra curricular she has. Its dropped down to literally one sleepover a week at best. She often spends one evening a week at ours too.

There are compounding issues that I know affect my feelings:

• Her mother is controlling

• We're having constant issues with child maintenance service (UK) because she was adamant that my partner was working, threatened solicitors and went to CMS - he was out of work for an injury and paying what he could which wasnt the £300 she was used to getting

• Till the CMS and solicitors threat she was overly nosey and intrusive on our lives

• We dont have a say over the schedule and time she is here, its all dictated by her mother (and grandmother sometimes)

• Ive had to go through 2 terminations in a short space of time for reasons...

They're the main ones. But even before rhe CMS stuff Ive just never really felt happy when shes here.

I find myself keeping my distance. I find somewhere to go/be on the weekday evenings she is here so im not home (and disguise it as them getting 1-1 time together) so I dont have to interact or entertain her. I often despise having to look after her for my partner. But I know if i say no, then he doesnt see her at all.

She is so sweet, she really likes me, she is no trouble at all, but i can't seem to be pleased she is here. I find going out sometimes is better as we're doing something.

I get annoyed over the small things when it comes to her.

More recently when he buys her dinner in (not take away) when we have food at home really grinds my gears (considering the financial position we're in). Its "she didnt want what we had" but im sorry, does she go to work and pay for our bills?

If im asked to look after her or do the school run (which is not often) it makes me feel so put out and annoyed.

I have almost 0 emotional tie to her. I feel bad in admitting that if she never came over again, I wouldnt be overly bothered about it.

I dont know the aim of this post, whether I want advice, reassurance, cebr, or to hear similar stories.... I am in counselling (new) so it will be a topic I bring up. I dont want this feeling to be forever. I want my own family with him eventually. It will change things and that fills me with some dread too over what it will look like.

Im stuck and I dont know how to sort of get over myself or it and the way I am feeling.

Also my partner doesnt know completely how im feeling- the avoidance etc. Though hes probably not an idiot to it. I'm just not ready to share until I have figured out or processed properly. It would destroy him. I dont want that.

Advice What do you do with a stepchild who really likes you and spends time with you?

I know this is suppose to be a win situation and it takes some time to reach this point. my step daughter is 7 and we only have her every other weekend which is a bit long some hours of Friday and two full Saturday and Sunday and she leaves Monday morning. before it was much easier as she was more clingy to her father and spends more time with him and a bit not friendly with me however this takes some and we reach a point where she follows me around the house. it’s sweet and nice and also wants to accompany me and help me in the kitchen but this makes me really tired and exhausted. and not being there also makes children’s think like I don’t like her anymore and just want to be away. what do you guys do to have your alone time without hurting your stepchild feelings ?

cos this memories doesn’t go away

I remember when I was her age and my dad dropped me at my uncles house for few hours and my uncle made my presence so heavy by not spending any tome and looking a bit annoyed

I don’t want to do this and she remembers it in the future

Vent Miss being childless

I saw a video yesterday that has me deep in my feels. It was this girl saying how she was a childless millennial and when she has a bad day at work she gets to go home and prop her feet up, read her favorite book, have a glass of wine, and go to bed. I am incredibly envious. Take me back to the days where those were my simplicities. Now I have to argue with an almost 13 year old daily who has no sense of personal boundaries and is incredibly loud all the time and just so fucking annoying. Not the kids fault I guess but it makes me hate my life sometimes. I had the house to myself today for like an hour and a half and it was the most peace I have felt in ages. Just venting, something, idk. I don’t have anyone to talk to about this. Anyone else miss being alone sometimes?

Advice Step son and porn addiction

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this subreddit, but I need guidance, advice, or support. I don't really know.

My husband and I have 4 kids; 2 are mine, 2 are his from previous relationships. I have my kids (7-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter) 100% because their dad passed away from brain cancer. He has his 2 boys 70% of the time, with their mom having them 30%.

My soon to be 15 year old step son has a problem with pornography. This has been ongoing for 1.5 years. It began when I found it on his YOUNGER (10.5-year-old) brother's tablet when he was showing me a football game clip. Turned out he was watching it on his own tablet and his brother's for quite some time. Okay, our controls failed, so we added stronger parental controls to all devices, and he lost his tablet completely (it was old anyway and brought no value to him other than porn). Keep in mind he and his brother share a bedroom, and he was watching it while his brother slept above him, and doing more than that, I am sure....

My husband let their mom know to make sure he did not have unrestricted access to tech there, and she replied, "okay, thanks"

He has been obsessed with getting a girlfriend for approx. the same amount of time, and during that time, at least 3 girls came forward saying they felt guilted into being his girlfriend via text or Snapchat. He is no longer allowed to text or Snapchat on his phone.

There was also one instance where he reportedly followed a girl into a dressing room at rugby practice, but he was with his mother during this time.

A few months later, he stole that tablet out of our bedroom and hid it in his bed (between the wall) and was again using it to access porn. I was unimpressed with both him and my husband, because my husband was supposed to get rid of it but never got around to it...

Then it came out that he has an old iPhone and tablet at his mom's house, both of which he had been using to access porn AND make fake dating profiles and talk to real women, and also engaging in long conversations with sex bots. She was not monitoring this at all. He shares a bedroom with his younger brother there, too.

His mom eventually admitted she had no idea how to make the tech safe, and sent them over to have the app, but on them to make it safe; then she ultimately said she decided no tech other than the PS at her house... okay, cool..

Well, fast forward to last weekend when his brother, who has been under a gag order from him and his mom, admitted that he's had a tablet since December at her house and has been using it to watch porn. His mom brought it over after a long back-and-forth and resistance, and sure enough, he's up to the same thing: watching porn and trying to guilt girls into dating him. But the worst for me is that ALL the porn he is watching is step-sister porn, and again, my 13-year-old daughter lives here full time. I keep trying to remind myself that the pornstars arent really step-siblings, but I am so grossed out with him.

I am SO angry. I am disgusted, and I am at my wits' end. So is my husband, who isn't far off from telling him to go live with his mother if he can't follow the rules & expectations here.

But I also love him. I have been in their lives for over 5 years, and I know this behaviour has to come from somewhere, but I have to protect my own children too.

We've spent lots of time and money on therapy for him since November of 2025, but he's been doing this for the last 10 months anyway. Their bio mom does/pays for nothing.

His bio mom seems to be unaffected by this. She even posted a memo on Fb saying, "I am raising a son your daughter will be safe with.".....no, you're definitely not.

I get that teenage boys are horny and curious, but this goes well beyond that in my opinion. His mom won't help keep either of her boys safe, which impacts all of us, but especially his younger brother, who was made to keep this a secret, knowing full well it wasn't okay, and it made him uncomfortable.

He came home today, opened up his school laptop and started talking about a basketball lesson he wants us to pay for.

WWYD?

Legal CPS called on bio mom

Without delving into too much, my husband was informed that a report was made to cps by the school yesterday regarding abuse. My step kids were interviewed by the counselor, gave similar reports of what they experience with bio mom and explained they feel safe with dad and myself. This was prompted due to bruising on one of my step children. We have suspected abuse in the past but I have not had proof. My husband has not been contacted by CPS yet but has spoke to the school. We are very uneasy and concerned. Kids are currently with us for our normal parenting time. Does anyone have any advice or experience in this?

Advice Am I asking too much

I have been with my SO for a little over 2 years now, we live together and he has a 8 year old daughter who we spend every other weekend with.
I need to know if I am expecting or asking too much from an 8 year old.
She doesn’t get ready on her own yet, so when we are taking her to school or leaving the house, I have to ask multiple times and remind her to change her clothes, change her underwear, brush her teeth, get socks and shoes on.
She doesn’t brush her own hair still and dad doesn’t care to brush it everyday for her so by the time we need to take her back to her mom’s, brushing it hurts. I have tried to make a routine of brushing her hair twice a day but she doesn’t like it and I don’t get support from dad in helping make that part of the routine.
She doesn’t flush the toilet, this has been a point of contention since this beginning. She will flush sometimes but at least once a weekend, I still have to walk into the bathroom with an unflushed toilet.
Asking her to change her underwear everyday to form good habits, I get push back from. She doesn’t want to do it and dad doesn’t remind her to do it.
Brushing teeth everyday, sure we can have a lazy day every now and then but now she is telling me that she doesn’t need to brush her teeth when she comes over because she doesn’t do that here and she isn’t going to school.
She lies about washing her hands. Sure as a kid I did the same thing but it is gross when she goes to the bathroom (doesn’t flush) and touches her tablet, her pillows, the tv remotes, shared snacks. I am constantly having to ask if she washed her hands.
She doesn’t pick up after herself so when the weekend is over, I am going through the house picking up dirty laundry, trash, empty food wrappers.

These are all things I’ve tried to make good habits out of or make a routine for her but I feel like I am being too hard on her and nagging nagging nagging. I don’t want to be the evil stepmom and I feel like I am because her dad doesn’t care about these things.

Vent I’m Tired of Being the Default babysitter.

Just as my title says, I’m tired of being the default baby sitter for SS. my SS is (5) and has an ATTITUDE. Food is ALWAYS an argument because he’s such a picky eater. Even what he wears for school is always a fight because he doesn’t like how something feels that day (even if he has worn it before). He’s even gone as far as kicking and pushing me because he doesn’t want to get ready for school. Please keep in mind that he is a very big 5 year old. He weighs more than half of my weight and is only maybe a foot and change shorter than me. And I’m the one always left to fight the battles. Because I’m a step parent, it feels like there’s no other way for me to discipline other than saying no or just walking away. I’ve always had anxiety attacks but they were always very few and far in between to the point that I didn’t feel I needed medication. Dealing with SS has driven me to have anxiety attacks 2-3 times a week while he’s here. I’ve had to get on anxiety meds because of it.

To my point. I work from home and have become the default baby sitter for SS and I just can’t do it anymore. I’m miserable. I LOATHE when school breaks are coming around because I know “we get him on his breaks” means I get him on his breaks. SS willpurposely comes into my office just to make noise and disrupt me while I’m working. I get so backed up on my work when he’s here and that just ends up being another stressor. I’ve tried talking to my husband about it and it just gets taken as I don’t like his son. And truthfully, I don’t at this point. Just because I work from home does not mean I have all the time in the world to be dealing with SS. I’m growing resentful towards my husband because I don’t have kids and it feels like a responsibility I avoided in my single life was thrown at me without a lifeline. And the thing is I feel like I can’t say anything because I get the “well you knew what you were getting into”. No, I did not. I knew he had a son. But never did I think or did I agree to take on his care fully while SS was not in school. I just want to crawl on a hole and sleep till it’s time for SS to go back with bio mom.

Advice Demanding, rude Princess behaviour of SD (5)

I need some advice because my partner and I don't know what to do anymore with this. My partner's daughter (5) had the biggest tantrum tonight because our housemate was using the bathroom she wanted to use (mind, we have another toilet to use too). She screamed the whole house down saying SHE needed to go to the toilet but she couldn't because of our housemate. We told her she could either wait for her to finish or use the other toilet. Then she continued screaming she didn't want to use the other toilet and that the other bathroom was HERS. We told her again, calmly, she's got two choices; either wait or use the other toilet. Tantrum went on and on. We chose to ignore it and keep on eating our dinner. She became more angry, started throwing pillows. We told her off and she'd get a time out if she'd throw another pillow.
Then our housemate came out of the bathroom, so I told her the bathroom is free for her to use now. For some reason she didn't believe me and kept on screaming and crying that she was in there. We told her one more time it was free, but she chose to keep on screaming and crying. So we chose to ignore her again. Anyways, this kept on going until FINALLY she gave in to check the bathroom and then she smashed the door shut and kept on screaming in the bathroom too. "IT'S MY BATHROOM!!" she kept on repeating. Then when she finally came out, she just kept on crying and yelling. Then started claiming that everything was hers only and no one else's. The house, the living room etc. When she somewhat calmed down, my partner tried to reach out to her to ask if she was ready for a chat and she wasn't; she then continued crying and yelling and being angry again. We just cleared the table, kept her sister company in her room, doing some stuff.

Anyways, in the end she did come up to us again, still a bit angry. But my partner wanted to go talk to her and she just didn't want to listen at all, didn't care about what he said. I tried to talk to her to later on when her mood was better, telling her that behaviour wasn't acceptable, that we are kind to each other etc. And she said she wouldn't do it anymore, but it didn't sound like she actually meant it.

We're just kind of lost what to do to get her to listen and behave like a decent human being and not be such a princess just ordering people around (which she also does, we shut it down every time she does and tell her to ask nicely instead) and wanting to get everything she wants. (which we also don't do, but she's not great at receiving no's).

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Advice Should I engage with HCBM?

I have an 8 month old son with my now ex fiancé. He shares a 7 year old with his ex. She was a HCBM throughout our relationship and even disclosed they slept together out of spite. She acted friendly but I knew what she was from the beginning. I broke off the engagement and have since blocked her as she would call every few months causing drama/chaos. Recently she realized that I blocked her and has asked our BD to have a conversation to “clear the air”. I told him that we have no business speaking to one another as we are not together. Her coparenting relationship with BD is all their business and mine with him is ours. HCBM said she wouldn’t feel comfortable having their son around me if the conversation does not happen. IDC to be around any of them so I have declined to unblock and talk to her. My peace and mental health matter to me atm. The children are at different ages and stages in life so them being around each other atm is Not my concern. My child and my health are my priority. I don’t understand why she would wanna speak esp if BD needs to foster their relationship. I may or may not be present when he has our child. idk if the trifling BD has said something to her either but I have expressed keeping everything separate. Should I have a conversation with her?

Advice I need a vacation.

I would say my SD12 lives a pretty great life. She is jn cheer, gymnastics, soccer. She has many social circles and has a bedroom that most of her friends envy. This summer we took her to Denver, we went to Indianapolis for her cheer competition and we took her to Europe for two weeks. It was the longest trip I’ve been on in 2 decades. At first we were not going to bring her because of her attitude and entitled behavior but after a few months of her probably having massive FOMO she cleaned up her attitude and started being respectful towards me. Well tickets had gone up in price in that time period, but i still used all the points i had left for her ticket. The first 5 days were pretty good, but they took a nosedive after that. She complained about carrying her own suitcase and said we were treating her like our “servant” because we were asking her to carry her own suitcase (it’s on wheels so really just push it). I regret taking her on that trip. The only benefit was i wanted to show her she had value and was part of this family and i wanted this experience for her. She has rewarded me by essentially ghosting me. I understand this is common for kids this age, but I also have a daughter that is about to turn two. I wanted to plan one last trip before her birthday since it’s the last time she will fly for free but I really didn’t want to bring SD12. I thought it would be pretty clear to her why. I would say “well since I didn’t want to carry your suitcase and inconvenience you or make you feel like a servant by asking you to carry your own suitcase I think it’s better that you just stay home.” My wife didn’t like this. She said we are bringing all the girls. So I said fine. Well when I was at work, I found an amazing deal on a trip to Fort Lauderdale. SD12 had a gymnastics competition that weekend, so I texted her at 10:15 and she never responded. I even texted her twice adding my wife to the text. My wife said when SD12 saw the text she was confused which is why she didn’t respond. I don’t buy this for a minute. I don’t text her very often so her not responding was honestly not surprising but I’m like “I’m reaching out try to take this kid to Florida and she knows whether or not she responds she will go because mom will have her back.” I’m fed up with it. She will take a picture of my daughter when she sits on my lap (she’s a daddy’s girl) and specifically crop me out of the picture. How should I handle this situation?

Support Brokenhearted Not Stepmom

I (32F) was with an absolutely lovely man (43M) who shares a 10-year-old son with his HCBM. We dated for a little over a year and a half. I experienced severe harassment from her on and off during that time. When we finally started doing intros with his son, there was manipulation and antics that I knew were affecting the child. But more so it was affecting me. I wasn't proud of how I was acting and responding to those circumstances and how I was treating him. I wanted him to be able to control the circumstances and protect me but he's just in an impossible situation. And I felt that this was just going to get worse. I want my own children. And I don't want them to be in these horrendous circumstances. So I broke up with him. And my heart is broken. I know deep down that I did the right thing for my future to give myself the opportunity for a peaceful circumstance for my children. But I hurt so bad right now.

Advice Generation of hoarders and I don’t have space in my home anymore

my husband and I live in a studio apartment

one bedroom and a living room. part of the living room is an office space which really is small and my husband uses it . I have so much to do , will be working remotely soon , studying online and also painting . I don’t have any space for myself , we also have a cat and my step daughter who comes every other weekends. my husband kept buying toys which she barely plays with and he doesnr even play with her with the toys, which filled up the house, hes messy and she’s messy, his parents are hoarders his siblings as well.

I grow up with so many stuff that I helped throw out so many things from my parents place and now my own home I’m not able to do that. maybe this is not the right place to post about this. but I need advice for my mental health how can I make a safe space for me that no one can put their things or use it. my salary is too low to rent a room or studio where I can chill alone.

another issue is bonding with my husband and step daughter together . she loves playing with me and actually do enjoy it as well, we are both creative and have wild imagination, but when I step out and do things alone then my husband will ask me to join them? but I he doesn’t join me and his daughter to play!? and when I told him I need to go out for a walk and then he ask if he ans he’s daughter can join, why? I said I need alone time. I don’t get it? then he ask if everything is alright. I just need time myself. I was single for very long time and recently married I’m used to having my own space and not sharing it with others so I need to be alone. sometimes the weather is bad I step to the bedroom to play with the cat he comes inside to check and see if I’m ok.

it’s not possible to have my own room but maybe someone can give me some idea when things gets overwhelming I need to have a safe space aaway from ny husband his daughter and so many things lurking in the house 😭 , except for my cat I don’t mind him being with me and he’s so clingy

Advice Did you feel different towards your adult stepchild once you had your "ours" baby?

I am making this post because I am just curious as to how my situation will turn out and if anyone has been in the same situation and can give me advice on it.

My husband and I don't have bio kids, however, my husband does have a stepchild (20 year old son) that he has raised as his own from his previous marriage. My husband and I are now 7.5 months pregnant with our first child (also a son) together.

The issue is, we do not have a great relationship with my husband's adult son's bio mom (she is extremely difficult/ entitled/ not a pleasant person) and his son does not have a relationship with his bio dad, hence the reason my husband stepped up to be his dad when he was 8 years old and stayed even though he and is then wife divorced 5 years later.

My husband's son is having a really tough time getting launched into adulthood. He was unable to go off to a university, failed out of community college and was not able to get enlisted into the military either. He still lives between our house and his Mom's house, so there aren't many expectations outside of keeping his room clean because he is only here at most 2 weeks out the month.

I do find myself getting tired of the lack of guidance given to him and it seems like they are just allowing him to flounder (but of course I have no say so in anything because I'm a stepmom to the 2nd power I guess).

This arrangement will be indefinite as of now. I am wondering if once our child is born, will I feel even more impatient about having another adult in the house not contributing to the household chores? Will my husband be more willing to force his son to come up with a plan for himself entering adulthood? Will his son start feeling uncomfortable at our house and gain motivation to find full-time work and his own place?

I don't want his son to feel pushed out/ replaced (especially since another boy is coming), but I do think there is a time when we have to start having adult expectations for him. (And yes, I know his parenting is to blame. My husband has coddled him because he was so worried about him potentially no longer being in his life after his divorce.) He also does talk about wanting to be out on his own, and he does work part-time, but I'm not sure if it's a lack of confidence or what but so far, he has not found is "path to success" just yet (which is probably normal for 20?).

Advice Advent Calendar - EOWE

Hi,

I have a bio daughter (9) and a step daughter (13). Every year we do a chocolate advent calendar for everyone, even if my SD is not here. She can decide what she does with it.

My dad took my bio daughter out for a day and they came home with a $100 squishy advent calendar. Which now sort of puts us in a tricky spot, as we don’t really want to drop $100 on another one.

Step daughter is here 5 days between December 1-24.

My suggested solutions are
A) put it away while SD is here
B) have SD open two days of the calendar and keep the squishy

My SD will still get the normal chocolate calendar. I am not sure if they do this at her moms or not.

Advice Relationship advice

Hey Reddit first time here and literally made an account for advice. Long story short I’m in a serious 7yr relationship with my significant other having 3 kids (not biologically mine) current ages 14,11,10. Within the last 2-3 years the kids have been extremely rude and ungrateful to what I provide for them and talk a lot of smack about me. My significant other hears and does nothing unless I say something to here and even then she’s soft to them and does nothing else. I literally kill myself for this family everyday and I’m starting to feel like it’s not worth it. I know they’re just getting older but with what they say it’s starting not to feel worth it. Mind you I’m 31 yrs old and met my significant other at 24. I’ve always wanted my own kids and my partner can’t have anymore. I’m not good with words but this is what I can muster at this point. Thank you in advance
