First Time Owner General mouse questions

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all! I have recently adopted a new mouse, after his previous owner could no longer take care of him. While I’ve never owned a mouse before, I have owned other small animals like hamsters and reptiles, and feel pretty solid with my general knowledge of mouse care. However I still have some questions that I’d like to be answered, mainly for my own peace of mind.

First, I want to clean his cage. I use aspen shavings in my chicken coop and the chickens don’t seem to mind it at all. Is it ok to use it in the mouse cage too? His old owner didn’t give me the bedding they used, and I’d prefer to use what I already have.

Also, how do you bond with your mice? Mine is an intact male around 6 months old, and is incredibly shy and nervous. I don’t want to accidentally traumatize him while trying to bond. Should I go slow and steady, or just pick him up and shower with treats after? I want to provide him with a good life. His owner recommended I don’t give him any friends, and that he’s too old to neuter. What’s everyone’s opinions?

Mouse tax available here. This is Cheese. Yes I do plan on adding clutter inside, that was the cage I was given along with him in it.

Question/Help Would this cage be ok for mice?

Post image

I have pet rats and have used a Maxi Duna Multy as a hospital cage but i am planning on only owning dwarf rats from now on. This is far too large to be used as a hospital cage for them and i will have no use for it anymore. Would this work as a cage for mice? The measurments are 99 x 51,5 x 36 cm.

Discussion I have a freed up enclosure, does anyone near Spalding (Lincolnshire, UK) have elderly mice in need of a home?

I'm free to take in a single buck or 1-3 females. The enclosure is a 92x40x40cm modified rabbit hutch to allow for 40cm deep bedding in one section of the enclosure. I currently have one buck in a hutch, set up to meet his disability needs so it is a but uncluttered but, I would love to show it off in DMs for anyone interested, so they can get a feel for my set up. They will also get out of cage time if they want it. They don't have to be tame - I will happily take in aggressive or unsocialized mice and leave them to themselves. I have tons of money saved soley for veterinary costs, so your pet will be covered on that front. I can feed whichever food/blocks you wish, or my own mix, as long as it is species appropriate.

Due to the small enclosure size (and my love for oldies) I will only be taking in elderly mice. Would love to offer a home to one/a small group, so hit me up! I will also take in any similarly sized rodents, such as deer mice or wood mice, if needing a home. No harvest mice, duprasi, hamsters, or fancy rats.

Question/Help Max gap between bars when getting a wire cage?

I’ve thought about getting a regular wire cage then adding mesh, but I’m wondering if any of the ones online will work for my guy. Has anyone had any luck, or have particular personal experiences or opinions? Thanks!!

Question/Help Rocks for better toilet habits?

I read anecdotes from a couple of owners that apparently rats prefer to pee on smooth rocks which then reduces overall smells since you can clean the rocks. Is there any information about this with regards to mice?

Question/Help NYC...caught this guy in a humane trap. Put him in a plastic tank with food and water. Going on vacation and I feel bad about putting him in the street.

From what I can see, he is a baby or very young. Caught him yesterday and pointed a video camera at him overnight and although he hides all day under the paper towel, at night he comes out to drink water and eat peanut butter as we well as millet and other food I left him.

I am leaving on vacation tomorrow and my wife would not allow me to keep him anyway. I also feel he must miss the company of other mice and might be depressed. I hate to do it but I think I have no options at this point but to release him outside. He just doesn't seem to move very fast as I have seen some larger mice do. :(

Question/Help How do I get my mouse interested in his wheel?

Post image
7 Upvotes

At the recommendation of y'all, I ditched the saucer wheel for a proper one. I made sure to get one that was 9 inches. Cinnamon was curious about it and gave it some experimental steps, but he doesn't seem to like it compared to the saucer. I think it's because stopping makes him swing back on the wheel.

Is there anything I can do to encourage him to use the wheel? I want to make sure he's able to get his movement in!

Discussion Why is he so mean and hateful towards everyone and everything that isn't me or his wife?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Ive already made a different post about my other mouse cheese (cuz hes a soup sniffing toe chomping lil bastard) now i think it's time to give my other mouse boy oreo his own post :3 oreo is the sweetest little boy ever! To me that is (and his beautiful wife sundey) He freaking hates everyone else, especially men and other mice. He's tried several times to bite my male friends fingers and has succeeded a concerning number of times (with my friends bleeding after being bitten) he hates his former cage mate which he has spent most of his life with (they were separated not to long after the fighting started) while separating during fights it happened a few times that i was bitten by his cage mate but never him (i had to sadly give his cage mate to a rescue due to bad aggression and being bitten multiple times) and what is really wierd is that oreo never ever showed any aggression towards me at any point, he also has his girlfriend which he had a litter of babies with recently. He's also recently been neutered to try and stop his aggressive behaviour but it didn't work, he still hates men and other mice (with other women there isn't so much a problem but he does show warning signs and that he doesn't like them such as : tail flicking and squinting his eyes but no biting yet) since getting neutered he's been living with his wife and his daughters since he knows them and doesn't show aggression yet (hopefully that won't change when his daughters reach maturity)

I wouldn't consider myself a new mouse owner since i have had mice for a while now and also don't have any other mice who are like him lol

Edit : for clarification, when I say biting other people and mice (not just males too, it also happens with females) i mean really bad bites and not playful ones (i get the playful ones at best while play fighting with him, meaning he will grab my finger with his teeth and chase my hand but never hurting me) it's really stressful to see him switch like that :( I've even been told by some people to put him down which i definitely don't want. Also since this is apparently important information he was formerly a feeder mouse that i rescued along 7 other mice and he is really the only one who is just positively focused on me and his girlfriend and instantly hostile towards others (his children don't count in this situation because he was with them most of the time since birth)

As of right now they’re separated but last night I bought two young mice (from the same store and they said they’ve been together in the same tank for almost a month) but when I got the home and into their new home one (not the one pictured) started chasing and attacking the one pictured no blood was drawn but their were lots of squeals and hands being thrown I’m not sure what to do or if they were just playing or whatnot but give me any tips or advice!! One pictured is named socracheese and the one that’s not is Reggie pepperjackson

Question/Help Does neutering really reduce the smell ?

I'm ready to get my male neutered if there is a high chance that the stench will reduce. I try to do everything right to make sure there isn't a stench. I spot clean and change bedding on time, I use a urine cleaner, I keep some old bedding and items so that he doesn't freak out and pee everywhere. Just 2 days after a deep clean there comes a strong smell of ammonia in the room where he's in.

Question/Help My mouse is now alone what do I do?

I had 3 feeder mice, my mom was told when we first got them that they may only live a few weeks, I wasn’t aware of that I was likely looking at things for their enclosure at the time. Two of my mice have passed within days of each other my third is energetic and running around but shes alone now. I know that I need to get her another sister or two but I’m not sure of the best way to introduce them.

Discussion Mouse parents who use/used paper, how has it worked out for you?

As an avid aspen user, id love to hear others experiences with paper. What brand do you use? Is it dusty? If so how do you mange it? How do you manage odor? Why do you choose paper over wood shavings? Share your experience and inform others!!

Question/Help Can I use a 20 gallon tank for my mouse?

I’ve seen some people say it’s too small :( but it would be hard to get something bigger, and it’s for a single male mouse. I could maybe do 29 or 30 but it would be easier for me to do 20
