PSA I found a rabbit outside - what should I do?

This is the time of year for many people to find both domestic rabbits and wild rabbits outside due to Easter and baby season.

For a comprehensive overview on stray domestic rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Feral_and_stray_rabbits

For a comprehensive overview on wild rabbits, please see the wiki article here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits

Is the rabbit I found wild or domestic?

It can be very difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a wild and domestic rabbit, especially if they are a baby and/or a common agouti brown.

In general, if the rabbit has long hair or does not have brown fur, it is most likely domestic - although there are exceptions. Please note that wild cottontails in North America cannot breed with our domestic rabbits, but wild rabbits in the rest of the world (e.g. Europe, Australia) can.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific tips on distinguishing domestic and wild rabbits, especially in North America: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#Is_the_rabbit_I_found_wild_or_domestic?

I found a domestic rabbit! What should I do?

Please do not hesitate to contact your local rabbit rescue for volunteers to help you catch a stray domestic rabbit.

For more tips and resources on how to catch a stray rabbit, please see the wiki: http://bunny.tips/Stray#Catching_a_stray_rabbit

I found a baby wild rabbit! What should I do?

If you find a baby wild rabbit that is not injured, please leave it alone. It is most likely not abandoned unless you know for a fact that their mother was killed. Rabbits return to feed their young only once or twice a day for a few minutes, usually at night. Just because the babies have been by themselves for 5 minutes does not mean that they have been abandoned. The mother is typically gone from the nest to eat and draw attention away from the nest.

A detailed image guide to whether a baby cottontail rabbit is in need of help.

If it is old enough to be exploring outside of its nest and has no injuries, please put the baby rabbit back under a bush near where you found it. It does not need any additional care or feeding.

As Rainbow Wildlife Rescue writes,

There is a 90% mortality rate with orphaned baby rabbits in human care, especially cottontails. This number increases if the rabbits are very young and their eyes still closed. They are extremely hard to "save". There is little substitute for the nutrients their mother's milk provides.

Baby wild rabbits can survive on their own at a surprisingly young age. In most countries, it is illegal to possess and take care of wildlife without proper permits. Wild rabbits also do not do well in captivity due to the possibility of fatal stress because of their high-strung and flighty nature.

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your dog picked it up but you can't find the nest, try putting a leash on your dog and quietly following them to see if they will lead you to the original nest. If you absolutely cannot locate the nest, you may keep the rabbit in a dark and quiet box and contact your closest wildlife rehabilitator that accepts rabbits

If you find a baby wild rabbit because your cat found it, please take it to a rabbit-savvy vet or wildlife rehabber as soon as possible, especially if it was carried in the cat's mouth. Cats have very lethal bacteria in their saliva, and contact can easily be fatal for a baby rabbit in 48 hours.

What do I do if I am positive that the mother was killed or the baby rabbit is injured?

If you are positive that this is an orphaned baby rabbit, it is best to just keep the rabbit quiet and warm until they can be transferred to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. Baby rabbits will do fine overnight without food or water as they are usually only fed once a day by their mothers.

Inappropriate care can be fatal to baby rabbits - see this story from Blue Ridge Wildlife Center as an example: https://twitter.com/BRWildlifeCtr/status/1420472056139984896?s=20

Please hand off the baby rabbit to a local wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

How should I keep a baby rabbit until I can get it to a rehabber?

To keep a baby rabbit overnight, please leave it in a quiet dark box with no food or water. You can provide a heat source such as a microwaved sock filled with rice and beans or an electric heat pad on low placed under half the box. Do not handle the rabbit more than necessary to prevent deadly stress.

How can I find a local wildlife rehabilitator?

If you need help locating a local wildlife rehabber: https://bunny.tips/Wild#Wildlife_rehabilitator_listings

How can I protect a wild rabbit nest from bad weather and dogs, cats, and other predators?

Keeping your pets indoors while the babies grow up is generally the best option, but if this is impossible, you can protect the nest a few different ways.

Please see the wiki article here for more specific information: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Wild_rabbits#How_can_I_protect_a_wild_rabbit_nest_from_dogs,_cats,_and_other_predators?

Care Santa Fe Buns?

Post image

Hey there, I'm looking into a few places to move and was wondering if anyone knew what the community is like in Santa Fe? I'm currently in Portland where we have a monthly grooming pop-up but wanted to look around and see if anyone did home stops or pop upstairs?

I know the odds are low, but worth a shot! Pic for tax!

Ping Pong turns 10 🎂

My rabbit turns 10! He has been through so much, he is the definition of a fighter.

He first came into my life in 2017, a year after he was born. He became my mom’s pet at first, she took him from a coworker who had him live in a cage for a year.

After my mom took him, unfortunately, she did not know much about rabbits either. For a year, she also had him living in a cage, eating mostly pellets with no hay, and all the horrible Kaytee food snacks. (“Yogurt” drops)

I took him under my wing after 2019, and took him to an exotic vet for the first time and changed his life completely. He became free roamed and followed the proper rabbit diet along with more toys and free time to explore. We were together until 2025, when I had to move to Spain for a couple of months and he was left with my best friend for the entirety of my trip. I came back the same year and we had crazy moving experiences. We moved around 4-5 times between the summer of 2025 to now. He survived so many moves (I was scared the constant moving would stress him too much), but he never showed signs of stress. He is so adaptive and became comfortable quickly in any room we were in. Now, we are living in an amazing place, after moving yet again but this time on airplane!

He’s been with my through so many life events, him being 10 now makes me so emotional. I want him to be with me as I finish my next chapter in life in the next few years. I’m being realistic, but also happy his energy and playfulness only get more defined as he gets older. 🎂🎉🐇🐰

Care Tips for moving with my bun + 4 hours drive?

Post image
276 Upvotes

I’m moving to another city in a few weeks and I’m looking for tips for making it less stressful as possible.

She got a proper carrier that I will be filling with puppy pad and a coaling mat (it’s usually hot here). I’ll pack a bag with hay, pellets, and maybe a banana, but she usually refuses food under stress.

The drive is around 4 hours and during the day.

Care Update: One week new bunny mama

Well, it’s been officially one week of having Douglas. I thought he would be pretty stressed out and depressed since my brother is no longer taking care of him but honestly, he’s been doing really great. He loves when I pet him, especially his ears. He comes onto the bed and hangs out with me. He runs around the living room. He basically has my whole room during the day, the bedroom and the living room when I’m back at home and then at night time, I am having to lock him up in his cage just because I don’t want him to get into any wires in the middle of the night. I did end up getting a bigger cage to extend his bunny hatch because the bunny hatch was just way too small for him to be stuck in at night. I still kinda wanna get a bigger one so I’m gonna go look for one today, but I got him lots of bamboo sticks, and he always has a bunch of hay, but I’ve also been giving him some cilantro and bok choy at night and morning. He only peed once outside of his litter box, which is good and he does occasionally give us little love bites, but it’s not hard and he’s not aggressive in anyway, I honestly thought having a bunny would be way harder, but I’m just open to doing whatever it takes to make him feel safe and happy I’m gonna make him a digging box today since I have a day off work. Adding a video of him letting me pet him, i can tell he’s a really happy bunny because if i stop petting him, he nudges me hand for more pets. Open to any advice!

My wonder is the best

The other day I cut my wonder nugget’s nail too short and she was bleeding. that was first time ever doing that in the 5.5 years I’ve had her. I literally sobbed and kept apologizing. Heck, I’m still apologizing and she’s totally fine now, I applied pressure and put a little all purpose flour on it and she kicked her back feet at me while hopping away. The day it happened, she was just mildly annoyed at me but didn’t hold a grudge. It’s like she knew it was an accident and was trying to comfort ME! She’s the sweetest loaf and I’m so incredibly happy she’s apart of my life. Earlier today, I asked her if I could check her nubs (what I call her two front paws) and tried to reach for them. She pulled them back and hopped away. I thought she was mad at me and said “I just want to make sure you’re ok”, and she turned around and started digging at the carpet with her injured nub for like a bit before turning around and just starting at me….i swear she did that to let me know that she was in fact ok.
I laughed so hard and she came running over and gave me kisses. I swear she knows what I’m saying lmao.
I love my Wonder so much and just wanted to share this with others bc everyone around me is sick of hearing about her but I can’t help it! She truly is amazing! 🥹
It’s gonna hurt so bad once it’s her time. I’ll never be ready omfg.

Tell me about a time your bun(s) safed you!

• Upvotes

Ok, so we all know those buns are crazy good for mental health. But pls tell me about a specific moment where you're bun(s) snatched you out of a bad episode in your life!

Not going into detail here, but I am having a very rough time lately and this morning I got some extra bad news.

Was crying my whole way back home. And at home...

I saw my Safana munching on fresh greens. Like full on munching, mouth stuffed like a chipmunk.

I looked at her and she looked soooo damn silly xD crying fit turned into laughing fit.

went over to cuddle and kiss her.

world was less gray after <3

My bunny groomed me for the first time 🥹

I’m genuinely so touched I have no words to describe this feeling. I was always nervous that he still didn’t really trust me, I’ve only had him a bit over a month but it’s been a steady battle when it comes to trust. Just 2 week ago he was actually comfortable with me petting him and wouldn’t try to run. Now he’s actively asking for more and grooming me when I let go 😭

Behavior Please help...my bunny is aggressive

Post image
300 Upvotes

It has been a month since we got him. We got him from a breeding group. We feed him good amount of fresh grass, sometimes include cabbage , tomato, and corn. He has a cage for himself, quite big not the typical small one. But mainly to litter train him. The door is always open so he has access to the utility room completely , he poops and pees around the complete area in the utility and I make sure to keep it clean. In the start he used to pee only near the drain, but nowadays he pees all over. I keep my house door open now and then and he plays around, when he is bored he just sleeps near my chair where I work. There have been quite some times where he does accidents inside the house , still haven't had success in making him go to the utility to do his business.

He likes when we pet him....but no picking up.

Two days before he had a tape sticking in his neck, so I had to take it out. When I did that I think it hurt him since a few of his fur came out along with it. He immediately charged at me...which be never did....and became completely aggressive trying to bite. I gave him space and let him play ....but since then...even if I am minding my own business...not touching him....he is fine...but suddenly he bites me out of nowhere. So I have tried to feed him grass from my hands which he is fine with ...post that, he was sleeping in a corner of the room , when I cleaned his cage out of nowhere he bit me. This is one such incident. What do I do....I'm scared if this is going to be forever.... He has this curious biting habit before too...where he would sniff my feet and try biting it...it didn't help welping also for him to stop

Bonding Welcome to Asgardibuns little Kairo

Post image
283 Upvotes

Eisa (left) and Kairo (right) have recently been bonded. Both lovely rescues. We lost our lovely Loki in June (Eisa's previous bonded partner) and Eisa and Runa have been living side by side. We have attempted a few times to bond Runa and Eisa, made some progress but never got quite there. We are hoping little Kai will be the glue to bond them as a trio but building a strong bond with Kai and Eisa first as Runa can be difficult.. Runa is very happy as a little single bun though and acts like a puppy. Nonetheless we would like to try to get her some bun friends too if we can. Please wish them all luck 🤞

Note that Kairo isn't a usual asgardian name like our other buns but we quite like it and it suits him. It's the name he had at the rescue.

He's a sweet little guy, our Kai 💕 welcome to the fam
