Help & Advice Are you thinking about buying a guinea pig for a child/teenager? Please read.

2.5k Upvotes

If you're planning on buying a guinea pig for a child in your life, these are really important things to keep in mind. Knowing this before purchasing can save yourself from being in a financial situation you can't handle, or a guinea pig that is not getting the care it needs.

  1. Guinea pigs are a life style choice, and not for a child to care for. Care taking for animals isn't a responsibility that should be left for a kid. When you buy a guinea pig, you are taking on all responsibility for yourself and facilitating the experience of living with a guinea pig for your child. They may help care for them, but you will be the one to keep things clean, enrich their lives, and handle them the most.

  2. They poo 100 times per day, meaning that you must clean those 100 poos every day to keep their habitat sanitary. If you wouldn't want to walk around in feces, neither do they. In fact they are extremely hygienic animals with fast metabolisms. I spot clean in the morning and at night, every day.

  3. They are expensive. When you buy a child a guinea pig, you must be vigilant on checking for health issues by weighing them weekly and checking for other signs of illness, have an exotic vet near you and be prepared to shell out hundreds in a time of need. You must also buy fresh vegetables, and give them unlimited FRESH hay every day. Finding somewhere local to buy bales of hay can save a fortune. A child cannot afford the costs.

  4. You need 2 guinea pigs. They are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone. Imagine living with titan like predatory aliens, all alone in a cage your entire life. Guinea pigs NEED their own kind. We are predators and they are prey. We can and should spend time with them daily, but it isn't a substitute. So x 2 all costs right out of the gate.

  5. Space. They need space, a lot of it. A minimum of 11 square feet for two guinea pigs. Pet store Cages are just that... Cages. If you wouldn't want to live in a space the size of a small bathroom your entire life, neither does a guinea pig.

  6. You need to do research. It will be your responsibility to make sure your child's guinea pigs are eating the right diet, what signs of health issues to look out for, how to enrich their lives on a daily basis, and more. Pigs need stimulation and interesting environmental changes to keep them happy. You will need to get creative and teach your children how to offer that to them, after you have learned it yourself.

  7. GUINEA PIGS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. They are smarter than you think, and with the proper diet can live 7 years. They are not less work than having a dog. They require a huge time investment for those years. They are dependent on you in the same way your child is.

  8. DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. Scotty's Animals does a fantastic jjob explaining the impact you can have by adopting from a rescue. Adopting saves guinea pigs from euthanization. Covid pets are being abandoned and left to ultimately die unless we start adopting instead of shopping.

I love my guinea pigs and they have done so much for me and my children. My kids have benefited so much mental health wise, and I bust my ass for both the kids and the piggies. I do just as much laundry for guinea pigs as I do my kids it feels like. Just know what you're getting yourself into. They aren't toys, they aren't entertainment only. They're living, breathing beings that deserve love, dignity, respect and proper life enrichment and care.

Pigtures No more ear infection for Bagels

Bagels had been dealing an ear infection for months and losing alot of weight. The lowest he dipped was in the 600s. I'm happy to say after many visits to the vet he is off of all medications and doing well and has been steadily gaining weight back. He will have to live with a permanent weeble wooble but it hasnt been slowing him down and it kinda adds to his silly personality.🥰 Last time we weighed him we were so happy to see he broke through into the 800s.

Habits & Behavior guinea pig dominating me.....??????

I've had the pleasure of being Kyle's friend for a month now. During cage clean time and floor time he grooms the hay off my feet and... tries to... sniff my bum?????? Please stop!!!! I'm not a guinea pig 😭 Today he dragged me to the floor by my hair, took out a MASSIVE chunk and ran away and swallowed it after I worriedly tried to take it out of his mouth. I only just washed it too :(( I hope it doesn't get blocked or upset his stomach. I didn't expect him to do that at all! I'm going to have to tie my hair back or something

I've owned 5 other boars in my life time and none* of them were ever a dominant piggie to me???? picture is of him mere moments later.

edit: now he's eating my shirt. I just remembered that he chewed a hole into my jeans the other day. thankfully they're already ripped skinny jeans

gus gus rates it 100/10 , as days go on he loves it more. he loves licking the spoon clean, using our cutlery and demanding more.

gus gus is now brave and has finally tried guinea pig pellets after being on goat feed all of his life, was a battle to get him to do so but now he’s obsessed. this boy eats 24/7.

gained around 10-15 grams! weighed in at 415g tonight, gus gus is a fighter.. and clearly an eater look at that smile!

he’s going to be mad when he doesn’t need critical care anymore… i think he’s going to tell us off or sneak into our stash

🌈 Rainbow Bridge I am traumatized from losing my baby, Cookie. I don’t know how to cope.

The photo shown is the last time I ever got to cuddle him. He was on the older side, and I noticed when I first moved into my new apartment a couple months ago, his gut was starting to get really strange. He had a lot of flatulence, and he was slowly losing muscle tone despite eating. I took him to the vet multiple times, and they gave him probiotics and gut motility medications. However, once each course was run, he would bounce back for a couple days, then decline again.

Last night, when I came home from work, I saw Cookie puffed up, and he was trying to walk around, but couldn’t balance. I immediately reached to take him out of the cage. Another red flag was that he usually runs away from me the first time I try. He didn’t even fight it. He just let me scoop him. The emergency vets in my area had no guinea pig expert. It was already 9 PM. I tried to force feed him critical care. I DoorDash gas drops, hoping maybe it was blue and I could at least keep him stable until I can get him to my primary in the morning. About an hour and a half into me attempting to keep him stable, he began to roll on his side. He had such a bad seizure he almost launched out of my bed and I had to catch him. It was at this moment that I knew the end was near, and there was nothing that could be done, except to keep him comfortable.

I feel so terrible. I was unable to keep calm. I’ve always been so afraid of losing him. And I was all alone, crying as my sweet man reached out for my hand and I held his paw as he took his last breath. The mobile pet cremation service I have on standby had to basically pry me off of him.

I have been inconsolable and non-functioning since. I haven’t changed my clothes since he died. I haven’t showered. It’s been 3 days. I spent the last 48 hours unable to stop vomiting, and I can’t sleep at all. I have still made sure to spend lots of time with his bereaved cage mate, and I’ve been ensuring he eats enough and remains stable. But I feel sick. I still can’t get the feeling of slowly feeling his body get colder and colder out of my head. I’ve been all alone, with all of the thoughts just going through my head. Every time I look at the cage, I break down. It’s so quiet without him rumbling all the time. I can’t bear to me in my room because now when I’m in there, I see the blanket he took his last breath in. I’ve been unable to go to work.

Cookie was my emotional support pig. Whenever I was sad, he’s the pig I would lay with. Knowing he’s gone has shattered my heart to pieces. I am not okay. How long does this process of grief take? I’m in agony.

In my previous post claiming to feed them a banana I messed up and actually fed a plantain instead (had to learn what the difference was). To make up for it I got a real banana and the results were... mixed.

Simon was appalled to even be close to it.

Hailey ignored it and demanded to know where the real food was.

Molly thought it was pretty good! She was the only one that ate anything.

Help & Advice Update: Hiccup Has a Friend!

Post image
37 Upvotes

For context I had one boy (Hiccup), who's now about 5 months (give or take). I got him a baby boy friend, about 2 months old!

The older one humps the little one a lot but there has been no chittering or much biting, just a ton of chasing each other and their deep purring sound. There is a second cage to separate them in case it gets violent, but they seem to really like each other so far!

What should I expect in the coming weeks, especially since the young one is so, well, young? Will the older one stop humping him so frequently as time goes on? What should I watch out for the most?

Health & Diet Guinea pigs are not toys

Unfortunately I like to torture myself by going on gumtree (facebook marketplace type site) to look at guinea pigs occasionally. What really annoys me is the number of posts by parents saying their kids "have lost interest" in the pigs and therefore have to rehome as they don't have time to care for them. Many also have pictures showing incredibly inappropriate housing/no hay available/fast food pellets/ZERO places to hide etc.

My childhood guinea pigs were also not taken care of properly and that still upsets me but I also think no pet should be a child's responsibility. It is pretty common knowledge that children lose interest in a lot of things quickly and might not yet understand that an animal can also feel uncomfortable or that it's important to learn how to properly care for them. Guinea pigs also enjoy sleeping/hiding/lounging a lot which probably isn't the entertainment these people are looking for.

As an adult I would think it necessary to do tons of research before getting any pet. What is absolutely baffling is that seemingly, in the age of internet access and large amounts of information available about guinea pig care, people are still doing absolutely zero research before getting them for their 6yo or even for themselves??? Guinea pigs, like other often neglected pets (especially rodents), are living creatures that feel pain and discomfort. They don't exist to teach your child a lesson about responsibility or something. Is it that hard to just get your child a stuffed animal instead?
