Im sure that iguana is tame but those things can have a MAD bite. I saw someone's arm get bit and he needed immediate stitches, so this makes me worried

u/Ok_Loss13 19d ago
Cat scratches and bites are extremely harmful to most animals, even deadly, but almost certainly causing serious infection.
This is not safe for either party.

That’s wild I hunt and handle them alot and thought they only tail whipped

u/Own_Recommendation49 19d ago
Here's an example

u/Gafspls 19d ago
That’s gnarly, it seemed like he had to basically feed it his hand.
Still I thought they would just never bite and only used tail whipping so good to know

u/Unckmania 19d ago
That guy is such an asshole. You're right iguanas prefer to whip you. If the iguana bit him it must have been very distressed and feeling like there was no other option.
Their jaws aren't very strong, so biting anything other than soft food can cause them to break.

I used to have an iguana. They don't have any braincells to give.
Just 2 empty heads bonking into each other.
Exception for both -- ability to escape unwanted confinement braincells, and surprise attack for no reason braincells. They might be sharing those.

Iguanas are like the Chimpanzees of the reptile kingdom; They can go from 0 to roidrage demon in a blink. Kind of surprised this video is happening.

u/Dependent_One6034 19d ago
Only a matter of time till the cat warms the Iguana up enough so it can make sudden moves.
And yet the cat will still almost 100% bop him in the head with a thwack and run away.

Iguana is kinda like a cat but at lower rpm. How many pets until cat meets the tail? This cat is about to find out.
4
u/Elfshadowx 19d ago
Cat is likely fast enough to dodge it.
Cats are stupid fast.

u/Mr_Shad0w 19d ago
This is true. I've seen an upset adult emerald iguana open up a man's arm pretty fast though, Let's hope we never find out.

Isn't closing their eyes usually a sign of discomfort in reptiles?
16
u/BalancedDisaster 19d ago
According to a random thread on an iguana forum that I just found, iguanas will lower their heads and close their eyes when they aren’t happy. If you’re petting them and they keep their head high (like the OP) while they close their eyes then they’re VERY happy.

I had a relatively chill (female) iguana for a long time and our cat was fascinated with her, but smart enough to maintain a respectful distance. She didn't care for him much.

FYI we have invasive iguanas in thr Florida Keys. Something everyone should know... "Domesticated and wild iguanas can carry Salmonella bacteria in their digestive tracts and shed them in their feces, posing a health risk to humans through direct or indirect contact." And .... "Yes, iguanas can transmit Salmonella bacteria to cats through direct contact, bites, scratches, or by leaving contaminated feces on surfaces that cats groom off their paws."

So are we all just ignoring the whole thing where if the cat so much as accidentally scratches the iguana, it'll be a serious problem due to the bacteria on the cat's claws? Like it's serious enough that you generally should not let your cats get close to your reptiles.
Are we all just forgetting that? Or is that not a thing in this scenario? Or do yall just not care?
EDIT: Jesus christ yall I was just genuinely confused. Sorry if it came off badly.

My guess is no one has brought it up because most people in here do not own reptiles and don't know this information 🙂

u/My_Favourite_Pen 19d ago
Same with birds yet its nuts how many people on social media eat up vids where cats and birds are playing together.
I think it comes down to a lot of people viewing these videos just dont know the underlying risks which is why proper pet education education is important.

Yeah man. Cat saliva being life threatening to reptiles is definitely common knowledge everyone is choosing to forget. You nailed it
3
u/ian9921 19d ago
Yeah, how dare I expect pet owners to know shit about the animals in their care. My mistake.
It's not like this is some obscure thing, usually I see people consistently bring it up whenever a video like this gets posted. I'm just suprised that I'm the only one this time. A single Google search "is it safe to let my cat interact with my lizard" is all it takes to figure this out.

u/AntonSugarwater 19d ago
You think the people who made that video are writing all the comments here? I don’t own a cat. I don’t own a lizard. A very tiny fraction of people do. Why would I google that ever in my life? You have niche knowledge. Share it with out being some pearl clutching weirdo judging everyone else for not knowing that niche knowledge

Do iguanas have strong jowls musclss? I saw a video once of a Tegu going after a cat and good lord was that brutal (I know tegus have much larger jowls than an iguana though).

I live in Florida, my cat literally HUNTED and BROUGHT HOME one of the same size. Not sure if they looked identical tho.
Edit to add: plz dont shame me for him going outside, my cats are indoor/outdoor cats (they go out 3-5 hrs a day, have a curfew to be home by 11 which i make sure they get inside safely every day by that time.
My dad made them outdoor/indoor cats, if i had a say in the matter i wouldve kept them inside only. Fortunately it is a safe neighborhood but still.

This is a inter species symbiotic relationship. They both look like they are really enjoying the head rub.

Just an FYI for those who need it: this is an exception among iguanas. They have no chill and frequently need to be rehomed because inexperienced people keep buying them and then regretting it. If this video made you want a reptile about the size of iguana, consider way superior and beginner friendly ackie monitor and blue tongue skink. Clint's Reptiles would be a good start on gathering info about pet reptiles
