These are my own observations. I have seen multiple models of each of the 2026 basic in ube and graphite as well as an Alpine sky basic. All the models I saw were ordered individually on different days. I don’t have photos - don’t have all the kindles with me. Also, it’s difficult to capture the differences on photos.
Lighting:
Consistently, the ube has the warmest screen of them all. To me, it’s very pleasant and does not have a “blue” or “pink” tinge as you increase the lighting. It’s almost more grey like my 2024 basic, like a warmer paper color.
The alpine sky lighting leaned more blue. The two graphite models I had differed. One was more blue. The other one was noticeably pink. Both were cooler than the ube. None of these kindles were as blue as the matcha kindle screen.
My 2024 kindle basic with the recessed screen had a really nice color that was very grey without a pink or blue tinge. The ube models are warmer but still pleasant like paper. The other models are more cool with a blue or pink tinge.
Clarity/contrast:
This is the biggest reason I made this post. I noticed that both graphite kindles had significantly blurrier screens with lower contrast. This was a huge difference for me. Letters definitely looked blurrier than on the ube and alpine sky models. Almost like a foggy, slightly out-of-focus screen.
The ube and alpine sky both looked sharp with good contrast. Both ube models were like this. I have good vision, and I actually think the sharpness on the ube models is similar to the 2024 basic that has a recessed screen.
Weight:
The alpine sky aluminum kindle feels noticeably heavier than the plastic models. I didn’t expect to care about this, but I ended up favoring the ube because of the weight. The aluminum back also feels slightly more slippery, like the back of an iPhone.
I’ve been seeing different reports about screen clarity and warmth. Based on my observations, there seem to be consistent differences between the models just like how the previous generation matcha kindles were way bluer than the black ones. In particular, the ube kindles have the warmest screens with the best clarity. The aluminum basic also had good screen clarity but was heavier with a cooler screen. The graphite kindles look noticeably blurrier.
