This 1960 archival photo captures a night game at Nippon Life Stadium (Nissei Stadium) in Osaka, Japan. Looming right behind the outfield is the illuminated reconstruction of Osaka Castle, offering one of the most unusual backdrops in professional sports history. The stadium served as the long-time home field for the Kintetsu Buffaloes before being demolished in 1997.

What turned out to be her final mission was supposed to be a “milk run” – a routine, uneventful sortie completed without incident. However, the B-17 was hit by an 88 mm flack shell, which blew a 7-foot by 12-foot hole in the floor, roof and side of the aircraft. Despite the damage, the aircrew ensured Miss Irish went on to complete the mission, and the pilot, Capt. John P. Gibbons, managed to emergency land the plane at RAF Raydon, Suffolk.

" The Steerage 1907" a photogravure by Alfred Stieglitz, believed by some to document early 20th century immigration to the US, sold at Heritage on Oct 1-2 for $40,000. The presale high estimate was $18,000. Reported by Rare Book Hub. (466x600)

NB - A photogravure is an early photomechanical method of reproducing a photo.

Catalog notes: Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864-1946) The Steerage, 1907 Large-format photogravure on Japanese tissue, 1915 13 x 10-1/2 inches (33.0 x 26.7 cm) (image) 16 x 11 inches (sheet)

PROVENANCE: Janet Lehr, New York, 1977; Private collection. In a provenance letter by Janet Lehr accompanying this lot, she states that this photogravure was selected by Alfred Stieglitz and presented to Dorothy Norman.

The September/October 1915 double issue of Alfred Stieglitz's publication 291 (Nos. 7/8) was devoted to photography and featured a photogravure of his celebrated image The Steerage (1907).

Under Stieglitz's supervision, five hundred photogravure proofs were printed on Imperial Japan paper for the regular edition, while a smaller edition was produced on thin Japan tissue for the deluxe issue. The regular edition sold for $2, while pricing for the deluxe edition was available on request. Encouraged by the positive response to the photograph, Stieglitz expected many readers to subscribe to 291 in order to obtain a copy of The Steerage.

However, little was done to attract subscribers, and Stieglitz and his collaborators overestimated wartime demand for the publication: about 100 people subscribed to the regular edition and only eight to the deluxe edition.

In a final satirical gesture, Stieglitz sold the remaining 8,000 or so copies of the regular edition in 1917 to a rag picker for $5.80; he retained the deluxe copies but eventually destroyed most of them.

American photographer Genevieve Naylor was sent to Brazil in 1940 by the U.S. Office of Inter-American Affairs to capture everyday wartime life. She spent nearly three years documenting a quieter, intimate, yet structurally strained portrait of Rio de Janeiro, including this famous capture of the city's open-sided streetcars.
