G2 | Discussion The scale of progression seems way harder this time around
I’ll start by saying I’m not a super experienced player here and this opinion is from solo play, if that changes anything. I’ve played Grounded years ago (not much) and ended up getting back into the series seriously for the past couple of weeks now. This is just what I’ve noticed experiencing both so far.
The scale of progression in the first game seems a lot more straightforward. More specifically with enemy encounters. While doing missions for the story, each subsequent mission felt as if it was taking me to a different level of the yard and showing me the next challenge I had to overcome to complete it. Unless you went exploring on your own, there wasn’t a feeling that something was too strong for you. This meaning that it wasn’t something you couldn’t overcome in time. From your first larva to your first orb weaver or wolf spider, the game directed you accurately to what you should be able to handle by the time you see them and if you couldn’t handle them already, you weren’t far off of being able to.
In Grounded 2, I don’t feel this progression is the same at all. I’ve been consistently “blindsided” by certain enemies I’m facing and I’ve barely been playing the game at all. I’ve just hit “A Strange Warning” in the story and haven’t steamrolled to get here. I’ll spare enough detail for spoilers but I’ll lay out exactly how one of the missions went for me. I needed to get acorns to build the hatchery so I go to the nearest tree from your first ranger outpost. On the way there I see a small orb weaver, a big orb weaver, a big roach, a small scorpion, and a big scorpion. By this point I still have an eyepatch, a clover poncho, and aphid slippers with the first claws you’re able to build. I didn’t even really have the chance to explore too much before this because the missions hadn’t required it. After building the hatchery, I end up going to get ant eggs and find the orc weaver just sitting there with no mention or explanation so I leave him be. Only then to be thrown into a fight shortly after with an orc scorpion that I really only beat due to having a portable distraction with me. Immediately after this I’m told to put two spike strips down and handle three soldier ants, one orb weaver, and a spiderling. I died to this 6 times before I cheesed the spikes.
Each time I was met with the challenges I was met with it seemed like I should be further along than I am but I’m not that far in totality. Is this something only I’m feeling or have any of you felt the same?
