Before #MeToo Went Viral, Kelly Oxford Said, “I’ll Go First.” | Ten years ago, Kelly Oxford, now a Playboy columnist, asked women to share their first experiences of sexual assault. They’re still answering. (Unpaywalled)
Kelly asked women to share their first experiences of sexual assault. She went first: she was 12 years old, on a city bus.
By the next morning, Kelly said she was receiving at least 50 stories per minute. By Monday afternoon, the New York Times reported that nearly 27 million people had responded to or visited her Twitter page. Kelly sparked #NotOkay, a viral movement that made the scale of sexual assault impossible to ignore.
This was a full year before #MeToo became a global hashtag. But “me too” already existed as a movement. A decade earlier, activist Tarana Burke had founded it to support survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black women and girls.
What followed Kelly’s post took something we’d become used to discussing as a statistic and made it overwhelmingly personal: women sharing their experiences, in their own words, one after another after another. NPR called it a “collective unburdening.”

Funny how abortion bans become “settled law” when an election gets close.

My heart is breaking watching this. They have a TikTok insta and YouTube it just started so I’m assuming more will follow. But my lord I know I’ve experienced this in the healthcare system and so many other women not just in USA. It’s a problem globally. Anxiety is a symptom not a cause! Our daughters deserve a better future and they deserve to be heard. I recorded a small screen recording of the first couple minutes. I’m so glad we are finally talking about it on larger platforms the comments just break my heart.

Shouldn’t Greek life be banned?
Greek life just includes hazing, misogynistic men and racist people who think they’re better than everyone. Also the amount of sexual assault cases is insane, like literally look at the Cornell 7 case right now. In my opinion it should be banned ASAP.

Idea
I would LOVE if someone created an instagram page to post about & highlight movies directed by women or with female stories or new books by women or new podcasts or music by women!
I want to hear more female voices but sometimes they get lost in the sea of men’s voices!
I would create it myself but I am very busy and unwell lol so I’m hoping that I can share my idea and someone with a bit of spare time could jump on it x
(Please let me know if this already exists)

“The sperm that won,” narrative needs to end
This is something I haven’t heard discussed often. Before you clown on me, hear me out.
I constantly hear, “I was the sperm that won,” or in all comment sections of biology videos, “Can you believe that was me?”
Yes, you are the sperm. You are also equally the egg that chose the sperm. We are the end result of the synthesis between the two inside the womb. Biology speaking, 50% of our DNA is also our birth mom’s (technically, we are actually 25% each grandparent but that’s not important). Constantly, we refer to ourselves as the sperm but it’s ignoring half of our biology.
I hate that it discredits the woman’s participation in the creation of an embryo and the egg as an active cell in the process. Our biology is very not favorable to sperm. It’s a very hostile environment and acidic. Our bodies purposely make it hard so that bad swimmers do not make it.
To me, it’s a remnant of debunked history and science where people only thought of women as the “carriers”. A large portion of history believed that women played no active role in sexual reproduction.
I know, “the sperm that won,” is a dumb hill to die on but it’s false and extremely harmful to perpetuate.

Are married mothers less likely to suffer from mental problems than single women?
Obviously, I reckon the answer is no. I don't believe it's because of any "fulfillment" of gender roles or any of that hogwash. The percentage probably just isn't completely accurate.
I don't think the reason why single women are more depressed is because they don't have any children, it's because bachelors, no matter the gender or identity, tend to live alone. People aren't used to that feeling of isolation so we naturally feel lonely. So, unless you're keeping a healthy relationship with those around you, you're more likely to suffer symptoms of depression, no matter your gender. So, naturally, the individuals who have less human connection will generally feel more lonely than those who are frequently surrounded by loved ones. That number will more than likely always be higher.
Now that I've cleared that up, let me go back to my question and clarify what the question actually is: Is the data we're seeing about how many married women are emotionally distressed lower than the actual number?
I came to this conclusion not because of any research I read but the lack of it. How many married mothers ACTUALLY have suicidal ideations, feelings of distress, or depression but don't report it? This is all from observation, from experience. My mother (and married women around me) come together and talk and I sit there and listen because they don't really mind me being there. A lot of them, I feel, are afraid to come out and say how they feel for fear of being seen as a "weak" mother or being "less-than" compared to other seemingly perfect parents. Others even feel that wanting to jump off a building i natural in their stage of parenting. However, I don't believe so. I think their beliefs and preconceived notions of how parents SHOULD act are stopping them from getting help. Although, yes, I agree that your mental health shouldn't be your child's problems and they shouldn't be exposed to such tendencies at such a young age but getting help is to STOP you from potentially putting their kids and theirselves in danger. I wonder if there's research about how many women ACTUALLY report their emotionally distress or how many women DON'T in relation to the data that we're given?
