Discussion Hiring- CMS Bus Drivers

Saw the hiring announcement on my kiddos school page and thought I would share. There are 3 more hiring events this year. I read somewhere that there are about 100 openings for bus drivers.

Application page:

https://www.cmsk12.org/operations/transportation-services/become-a-driver

Edit to add: the hiring events include openings for multiple roles across CMS too — afterschool, food services, etc.

Additional edit: Those who would like to speak to the board of education about the pay, here is the calendar: https://www.cmsk12.org/board/calendar-for-the-board-of-education

Meetup Longboarding in Ballantyne :)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

hey everyone! Starting today, I’ll be longboarding around the Ballantyne area. If anyone ever wants to join me for a ride, you’re more than welcome!

I’ve been thinking about exploring the Waverly area. I’ve noticed it tends to be pretty quiet after 4 PM, with very little traffic. The pavement is also nice and flat, and there are some decent turns to ride through.

If anyone’s interested in joining for a ride sometime, feel free to reach out!

Recommendation Fat Xennial new to Charlotte needs advice.

Hi. Long story short I am 46 and in surgically induced menopause. I also have a pituitary tumor. Both of these things cause weight gain. I just moved to Charlotte and I am looking for unique fitness classes that are ok with a fatty just starting out. I am interested in martial arts, dance, anything that isn't just running on a treadmill.

Politics Wake County: 697. Mecklenburg: 100. Can Charlotte beat Raleigh at something that actually helps animals?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Full disclosure: I'm a Raleigh guy, and I'm here to stir up a little rivalry for a good cause.

I run a free volunteer project called NC Pet Project that tracks shelter numbers in all 100 NC counties and is asking the General Assembly to properly fund spay/neuter when the long session starts in January. Right now the state program covers about 37 cents of every dollar counties ask for.

Here's the scoreboard as of today:

  • Wake County (Raleigh): 697 signatures
  • Craven County (New Bern, about 104,000 people): 374
  • Mecklenburg County (Charlotte, 1.2 million people): 100

Per resident, Mecklenburg ranks 89th out of 100 counties. New Bern is out-signing the Queen City almost 4 to 1.

The good news: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control is doing better than most of the state. It euthanized 13.9% of the dogs and cats it took in last year, against 26% statewide (state report: https://www.ncagr.gov/divisions/veterinary/aws/Fix/reports). Low-cost spay/neuter is a big part of why, and more funding means more of it.

Low-cost spay/neuter in Mecklenburg, if you need it:

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control: free spay/neuter for residents at or below 200% of the poverty level or on government benefits.
  • Humane Society of Charlotte: cats $75 to $85, dogs from $125.
  • Stand For Animals: three clinics, with walk-in days and a medical assistance fund.
  • Spay Neuter Clinic of the Carolinas: serves Matthews, Pineville, Mint Hill and Union County.

The full list with phone numbers is on the Mecklenburg page: https://ncpetproject.org/counties/mecklenburg/

And if you think spay/neuter is worth funding, add your name. Takes about 30 seconds: https://ncpetproject.org/sign-the-petition/

Let's at least catch New Bern.

Politics They are going to ban THCA?

I just found out about this and I'm completely losing my mind. How is this flying under the radar?

I’m hearing that everything including our access to THCA flower is suddenly on the chopping block in North Carolina. I don't know all the legislative details or the exact bills being pushed behind closed doors, but it sounds like a total F you to consumers and local shops.

Why are they doing this? Is it big pharma? Alcohol lobbies? dumb politicians? It makes zero sense when adults have peacefully enjoyed a legal market and local small businesses have been thriving.

So I’m asking because sitting around and watching this happen is not what i want to do

What can we actually do right now to save hemp in NC?

Who are the specific reps we need to blow up phone lines and emails for?

Are there active groups, petitions, or industry coalitions leading the charge that we can support?

Drop your knowledge and action items below. Let’s get loud before they pull the rug out from under us entirely. What's the game plan?

Recommendation What to do during an 8 hour layover in Charlotte?

Hey folks, on my way from Montréal to Mexico City in December and I have an 8 hour layover in Charlotte on my way there. I've never been outside of Canada before so I want to take advantage of the layover to catch some American vibes without turning my wallet inside out. What do you recommend for someone to do in Charlotte without a car for just a day? I like a good chat and a good pint, history, culture, music, food. I don't like sports (including NASCAR lol).

Thanks!

Recommendation Where to watch the World Series in Charlotte or surrounding areas?

I recently moved to western NC from Wisconsin and I have high hopes of my Brewers making the World Series this year. Are there good baseball bars or anywhere people are going to watch the WS? Do people even care about baseball here?

EDIT: I never claimed Charlotte was western NC, I live on the edge of western NC and want to travel to Charlotte to watch, as it’s the nearest city. I didn’t know this would have people up in arms
