Discussion This is the first year in more than three decades with a Democrat running in all 124 South Carolina House districts, and 31 of us are here. Ask us anything!
Hi, r/southcarolina! This year there's a Democrat on the ballot in every one of South Carolina's 124 House districts, which hasn't happened in more than 50 years (see the note on history below). In 2024, 54 of those districts didn't have a Democrat on the ballot at all. So instead of a hundred separate AMAs, we're doing one for the whole class, three days before early voting opens.
31 of them are in! Each candidate answers you from an account the mods have verified. I tried to take a picture with all of them holding up their signs. It was an experience.
Leave your question now and the class answers Friday, Oct. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m.
If you know it, start your comment with your district number ("District 99:"). Don't know your district? Type your address at bluewavesc.org and it'll tell you, along with who's running there.
Early voting runs Oct. 19 to 31, Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can find your early voting center at scvotes.gov.
A big thank you to the moderators of r/southcarolina for helping us pull this off!

Edit, a note on history: The title says "more than three decades," but it's actually been more than 50 years. In March, South Carolina Democrats had a candidate for every statewide office for the first time in 32 years, and one in every state House district for the first time in more than 50. So while both statements are true, the title actually understates it. Either way, it's been way too long and we're glad everyone is running!

[OC] SCDHHS - Discouraged
Good morning everyone.
I'm trying to stay hopeful and in higher spirits, but it's difficult. I'm frustrated and feeling down at the same time.
My wife and I are expecting twins. She's getting closer to the 20 week mark. We have done two seperate Medicaid applications and was denied for both due to my income. She's high risk and diabetic. She was diagnosed with type 2 back in 2021. The bills keep racking up. I feel a mountain of stress compounding on me. This last one took 3 months just to hear something back, just to find out this morning that my wife was denied. When I called this morning, they escalated it as a medical emergency with the info I gave them. My fingers are crossed, but still. We did manage to get some hospital sponsorship that covers nearly 70% of the costs, but they are still expensive.
It's heartbreaking.
It's maddening.
I feel like everything is crumbling around me, that it will just be more difficult going forward to make sure my kids will be healthy. I don't think I would have been feeling this way if SC would have taken then Medicaid expansion. I just feel lost now.
I know some fault lies on myself. I know some on my other half. I think I was just blinded by my naivety of everyone I know had it while pregnant, so I thought she would be able to as well. I can't believe I'm pushing 40 now with this still in mind.
My apologies to everyone if this is not a suitable post for the subreddit. I just needed to vent a little.
Thank you all.

Politics Voter Concerns!
Voter Registration Issue - Check Yours Today
I have been an active voter for over 10 years, and am eager to go vote on November 3rd. I previously voted in the 2024 Election, in-person with my ID, and had zero issues.
In an abundance of caution I went online to check on my registration and polling location and got an error message saying I wasn’t registered.
I assumed maybe I was made inactive somehow- though I’ve voted in the past four years and had no changes that would disqualify me from voting or my current registration being valid.
I emailed, then called my county office.
I was told I was Inactive due to “moving residences”. I have not moved in 5 years, well prior to the 2024 election. The tag associated with becoming inactive due to moving is “Inactive - IM”. This is the tag on my account according to the county office.
This is different than if I was sent a letter to confirm residency and didn’t respond (Inactive - IF). To be labeled as Inactive - IM, the office/State is meant to have gotten **confirmation** of my having changed residences. They don’t have confirmation (because I haven’t moved) but they have tagged me as such anyway.
As I got this remedied on the phone I was told ***I*** had made a mistake in putting my SSN wrong as I filled out a new form for them to rectify this.
No.
This is my correct SSN. The one they have ***on file*** is incorrect. Despite my having checked it in previous years, for previous elections, and having voted in previous elections.
So all this to say… what the hell happened to my registration? In SC, voter registrations marked “Inactive” can still show up at the polls and vote regardless, but what if that wasn’t the case? Does having the wrong SSN, due to an error on the State’s part, affect my ability to vote? Not necessarily. But the issue is that my registration is incorrect, through no fault or changes of my own.
I emailed the State Office wanting to know:
\-The date and reason my registration was changed to inactive.
\-The specific information used to determine that I had moved.
\-Whether an address-confirmation notice was mailed to me, and if so, when and to what address. (I never received one, I also should have been marked “IF” if I failed to respond.)
\-When the Social Security number discrepancy was first identified and whether it existed when I voted in 2024.
\-Confirmation of my 2024 voting history
\-Confirmation that my registration is now corrected and that I am able to vote in the November 3rd election.
This is what I received in response:
G*ood afternoon,*
*I hope you are doing well. When I open your Voter Registration, everything looks as it should. It is showing that you are active and ready to vote. I see several participation records over the course of several years. Your votes were tallied and counted. I cannot verify your SSN, but it sounds like the county updated that for you.*
*I am happy to report that you are ready to vote during the Early Voting period or on Election Day.*
\- - -
That’s it.
This answers none of my most pressing questions.
WHY was my registration so poorly handled that it was marked as “Moved” and my previously correct SSN changed to be incorrect?
Being marked inactive is one thing- but the inactive tag being placed is one that requires confirmation that I did NOT give because I DIDNT move! Is this happening to other voters without their knowledge, leading to their votes being invalid? If I hadn’t been diligent in checking my registration, would my vote have counted on November 3rd?
With the current political climate, and such scrutiny being placed on elections, errors like this can’t keep happening.
Check your registration, people. It’s too late to register to vote in this election if you haven’t, but register anyway so you are ready for the next one.
Thoughts?

Discussion Changes to the cannabis laws
South Carolina has seen major legislative battles regarding hemp-derived THC products. [1] (https://scdailygazette.com/2026/08/17/sc-bills-to-restrict-thc-products-strengthen-dui-laws-wont-be-revived-this-year/), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfKoQXiCVks)
The state legislature voted down a major compromise bill to regulate intoxicating hemp products. [1] (https://thecurrentga.org/2026/06/27/thc-hemp-products-remain-legal-for-all-in-sc-after-efforts-to-limit-sales-fails/), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfKoQXiCVks)
The Hemp Regulatory Battle
• The Failed Bill: In June 2026, the South Carolina House of Representatives voted 69-28 to defeat a heavily debated compromise bill. The bill aimed to place strict regulations on hemp-derived THC products (like Delta-8 or Delta-9 beverages and gummies). [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfKoQXiCVks), [2] (https://thecurrentga.org/2026/06/27/thc-hemp-products-remain-legal-for-all-in-sc-after-efforts-to-limit-sales-fails/)
• Proposed Rules: Had it passed, the bill would have established a strict 21+ age limit, restricted most sales to liquor stores, banned restaurant sales, and capped THC concentrations to 10mg per serving. [1] (https://thecurrentga.org/2026/06/27/thc-hemp-products-remain-legal-for-all-in-sc-after-efforts-to-limit-sales-fails/)
• The Outcome: Because a coalition of lawmakers (concerned about harming small hemp businesses) and hardline opponents (who wanted a total ban) killed the bill, hemp-derived THC products remain legal and unregulated in South Carolina. [1] (https://thecurrentga.org/2026/06/27/thc-hemp-products-remain-legal-for-all-in-sc-after-efforts-to-limit-sales-fails/), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfKoQXiCVks)
Where Marijuana Laws Stand Now
• Medical Cannabis: While the state's 1980 alignment law technically adjusted its scheduling mirroring federal action, standalone legislative efforts to create a fully functioning state-level market—such as the Compassionate Care Act (SB 53)—remained deadlocked and failed to pass before the session ended. [1] (https://www.johnnewkirklaw.com/blog/drug-charge/marijuana-and-hemp-in-south-carolina), [2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_South_Carolina), [3] (https://scdailygazette.com/2026/08/17/sc-bills-to-restrict-thc-products-strengthen-dui-laws-wont-be-revived-this-year/)
• Recreational Marijuana: Marijuana possession remains fully criminalized. Lawmakers rejected decriminalization bills like HB 3804, meaning possession of small amounts can still lead to a misdemeanor conviction and up to 30 days in jail. [1] (https://southcarolinastatecannabis.org/laws), [2] (https://www.johnnewkirklaw.com/blog/drug-charge/marijuana-and-hemp-in-south-carolina)
Would you like to know more about the penalties for simple possession in South Carolina, or how the state handles low-THC CBD oils for medical exemptions?

Discussion South Carolinians: Do You Have a Short-Term, High-Interest Personal Loan? Share Your Bills.
Hi folks!
South Carolinians took out more than one million high-interest, short-term personal loans in 2024 alone, totaling $2.3 billion. The industry, which critics say preys on desperate borrowers, is deeply entrenched in the Upstate, in cities including Greenville and Spartanburg.
The New York Times and The Post and Courier are examining the business of short-term lending in the state. If you or someone you know is a borrower who has taken out installment, payday or title loans, or you work for a company that offers them, please fill out the form here.
A reporter or editor may reach out to learn more, but we won’t publish any part of your answer without hearing back from you. Thank you for your consideration.

Politics Election 2026: Graham polling tight with Andrews (+4pts)
In Sunday’s poll from Rasmussen Reports, Graham led Andrews 49%-45%. The poll sampled 837 likely voters Oct. 5-8 and carries a +/- 3% margin of error. The same pollster in September had Graham ahead 48%-43%.
