New Moderation

Hey everyone!

I recently became the new moderator of this subreddit. I’ve had an interest in urbanism for a while now and thought it would be fun to try and get this sub to be a little more active.

I’m currently a project manager/designer for CDOT. I don’t get to decide which projects move forward, I just design and manage some projects that the CDOT program managers request. Mostly sidewalks, turn lanes, bike projects, and pedestrian crossings.

I’ll try to post once or twice a week if I hear any interesting news or if I have any useful tools to share. I honestly do not know much about urban planning and zoning so I’m excited to learn more if anyone wants to make any posts about those topics.

What do you guys want out of this subreddit? What are your goals for the City? Is there anything you are excited about? Any recommendations for me regarding the subreddit?

Some helpful tools

I wanted to share a few useful tools and websites you can use to monitor new City projects or see historical growth:

Charlotte Explorer: This is the best website. It is a map of the City with tons of layers you can turn on and off. There are more layers in the add data section. You can turn on bike lanes, greenways, City projects, high injury networks, land development projects, etc. You can click on the objects that show up on the map for more information. One of the most useful things on this website is that it shows every City maintained street as a light green color and every NCDOT maintained street as a light red line. If you submit 311 or CLT+ requests, it may ask if your request is on a City or NCDOT street. Link: https://explore.charlottenc.gov/

Project lists: These pages list of almost all public projects. If you see a project on Charlotte Explorer that you would like to know more about, I would try to find it on one of these pages. You can read recent updates and most of the City projects have someone you could contact if you have questions.

CDOT (does not list small projects): https://www.charlottenc.gov/Growth-and-Development/Projects/A-to-Z

Stormwater: https://www.charlottenc.gov/Services/Stormwater/Projects

CATS: https://www.charlottenc.gov/CATS/Plans-Projects

County: https://parkandrec.mecknc.gov/current-projects

NCDOT (this is a map): https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/ProjectsNearMe/default.aspx?location=county&id=mecklenburg&type=aviation,bike,bridge,ferry,highway,construction,public,rail

Mecklenburg County Time Machine: This website lets you see aerial imagery all the way back to 1938. This website has very up to date aerial imagery as well, usually even more up to date than google maps. The quality is so high that you can even see the joints on the sidewalk. https://maps.mecklenburgcountync.gov/timemachine/

Mecklenburg County Greenways: It's about 2 years out of date but it has really nice maps of every County greenway and also shows future greenway locations. https://mecknc.widen.net/s/jwswkfbds8/park-greenway-brochure

Comment other useful tools!

PS: I noticed this subreddit had restricted posting to only approved users (I was the only approved user) so I switched it to allow anyone to post.

Hello I am a twenty seven year old having a rather tough time getting footing back into society. Right now I'm doing indeed applications left and right. Found a church that has an exterior outlet so that's a pro. So everything that's going wrong right now is that my truck is having mechanical issues which is going to be taken cared of on this Friday. Currently my checking account stands at $1,000 so not all it that bad. Want to to see if there's any help out there because my only issue is job loss

Charlotte Wellness Hub??

Hey y’all,

My girlfriend and I are planning a move to Charlotte in the next few months, and we're looking to rent out a space to make a gym, potentially geared towards the underserved community. The concept would be free or low‑cost group workouts (beginner‑friendly strength, walking groups, yoga, etc.) and a strength training area, plus basic mental health support like peer groups, stress‑management workshops, and referrals for affordable counseling. The idea is to flesh it out over a longer period of time, but that's the start.

This would not be a high‑end gym. It would be more like a welcoming flex space aimed at people who can’t afford $100–$200/month memberships or may want a different, more holistic experience in a gym. We’re especially thinking about folks dealing with anxiety, depression, or financial stress who know movement would help but feel like they don’t have an accessible option. The big point in going on this thread is to see if there really is an impact we can have, because I do know there is a bigger concentration of gyms in that area than in other spaces.

I'm not trying to promote anything at all, I just really want to see if it's actually something the Charlotte community needs, and if we can help it at all. Thank you all so much :)

Feel free to DM with any questions, we still have a lot to think about with this concept, so any advice or help would be great.

Best Bars With Food Open on Thanksgiving

Anyone have any suggestions for bars that are serving food on Thanksgiving? I see places like Steak 48, Oak Steakhouse, etc all have some kind of Thanksgiving meals going on (probably super expensive) and have open bars. What suggestions would people have of decent atmosphere (not dive bar) where you can spend the holiday?

Don't have friends/family in Charlotte so, if I don't feel like just staying home and working would like to maybe find a decent place to go for Thanksgiving for a solo person.

With the proposed tax increase, why not use the 40% for roads and 20% for busses to create two Bus Rapid Transit lines along crazy wide roads that could afford to lose a lane in some places? (Orange and Purple Lines)

Then for fun, I added the Red line commuter rail down to Rock Hill and the Green line which is Amtraks route already as another commuter line. I’ve only been in Charlotte for two years so tell me if anything already been proposed and failed.

This is a bill that is slated for a committee and floor vote next week. It would have a lot of measures aimed at regulating the material and form of parking lots as to prevent damage to the water supply from runoff. Notably, it also would eliminate parking minimum requirements statewide

Town Center Plaza Walkability Update

Post image
27 Upvotes

Happy to report a small win!

A while back, I posted about much-needed pedestrian/cyclist improvements at the Town Center Shopping Center near UNCC. I have had ongoing discussions with one of the property managers, who to my surprise, was very receptive and onboard with my recommendations. She understood that improving access improves foot traffic, which is always good for business.

I asked for permission to install a temporary curb ramp at the bottom of the hill where the desire path meets the parking lot, and if I could paint a designated space so cars won’t block it, which she happily agreed to. Not only that, but she said next year, when they repave the parking lot, she would add a more permanent solution to the budget. Unfortunately, the curb ramp I installed was immediately stolen that night, as I did not have the means to bolt it down.

Next steps are to try to get other stakeholders looped in, most importantly, someone from the Heatherstone Condominiums who owns the property that separates the Town Center Plaza from all the neighborhoods upstream. Ideally, a proper path can be installed along the backside of their property.

Hopefully, this inspires others to use their voice to make changes big and small in your community!

REQUESTS:

  1. Help with painting
  2. Help with making a couple of wooden ramps and bridges to get over some rough roots at the top of the hill pictured above.
