Rant Wtf - what the hell kind of whacked contradiction is this?

My child is celiac. He ate most of this bar before reading this. It literally has the gluten-free certification on it.
Why should we have to read any further? But apparently we needed to.
Bullshit.

Question Help me help a kid on halloween

A little girl at my church has celiac disease (diagnosed just a few weeks ago, she is 11) we have a trunk or treat coming up, and I want to make it a success for her.

My idea was to fill those cellphone baggies with certified gluten free candy, and hand them out to each trunk with instructions to give them to this sweet girl when she comes around.

I'm looking for ideas on how to make this a better plan, and ideas for candies to put in the baggies. Right now I'm planning to use the Unreal brand, are there others?

TIA

Question Anyone here get sick from beer in the air?

Just try to see numbers here, I get intensely sick from being around aerosolized beer in confined spaces.

edit+ commented below:

Pretty disappointing how many people here would rather make the same joke about beer spray cans than actually understand the question being asked.

Aerosolization doesn't require a spray can. When bubbles burst at the surface of a liquid, they eject microscopic droplets into the air. This is well established fluid mechanics, and there's literally published research demonstrating it with beer specifically.

Zhu et al. (2010), Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20644917/

Beer foam also contains higher concentrations of certain proteins than the underlying liquid, including barley-derived proteins. So the idea that bursting beer bubbles could carry some of that material into the air isn't exactly some insane proposition. Nor am I asserting this mechanism as some grand medical finding.

Nobody here claimed this was a proven mechanism for triggering celiac reactions, that's literally why I'm asking. I'm trying to see whether anyone else has experienced something similar. It's a question, not a medical assertion or advice to anyone.

What's especially embarassing is seeing this response in a community for people with a disease where individual symptoms can vary so dramatically. You'd think people here of all places would understand the difference between something being poorly studied and something being impossible.

The sheer number of people immediately jumping to ridicule over a completely harmless question is pretty telling. You don't have to believe my hypothesis, but maybe spend 30 seconds understanding it before confidently making fun of something you clearly haven't looked into.

GOOD JOB r/Celiac 👏

Rant Gluten challenge sucks

Hi All,

I imagine the subreddit is probably tired of posts like these but I don't have anywhere else to rant about this. The Gluten Challenge feels so cruel. Im 3 weeks and a few days into the challenge so far, and while it has gotten easier, it feels like other signs have started creeping in. It's so exhausting, I feel like I'm on fire all the time now, and my brain has essentially been mush these past 3 weeks 😅 I also have never been so damn itchy. Like holy moly.

I have antinausea meds, and they're somewhat helping on the worst days. Thankfully, my headaches are bearable as well. My throat every now and then keeps becoming a little swollen and inflamed as well, which is being monitored closely. Don't get me started on the cramping and bowel movements either. One week, it's explosive diarrhea, the next week it's all constipation and the cramping is sooo uncomfortable. It's been hard to go outside because I can't trust my stomach. I just can't wait for these 6 weeks to be over!! I never thought I'd miss eating Gluten free food 🥲 you'd think there'd be a less torturous way to confirm celiac by now :/

Is there anyone who has gone through it that has any tips to make things more bearable? Anyone have any simple recipe suggestions or basic ways to dress up pasta? (I am admittedly growing tired of my bowl of pasta for lunch every day.) Thanks for listening to my woes :')

Anyone else drink this okay? I am a silent celiac so never know if I gluten myself. It says gluten free on it and doesn't contain gluten ingredients. It says it is made in a facility that has wheat but the company takes measures against allergens.

Question 1st celiac Halloween

This is my 7 year old son's first Halloween after a celiac diagnosis. How do you handle trick or treating? We thought about still allowing him to trick or treat, then having safe candies on hand for him to trade into us at the end of the night. What do you do?

I am diagnosed celiac. My 19 year old (who had sky high antibodies when tested as a child. So has always been gf) and I are consistently having trouble with Spice Islands Taco Seasoning (purchased at Costco). It says gluten free on the label. Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Thanks.

Question Favorite Celiac Friendly Restaurants in Boston

For those of us who live in Boston or surrounding areas, what’s your favorite celiac-safe restaurant?

There are so many places with one or two ratings on FindMeGF and I would feel better if they had more.

I’m hoping you all might have some recommendations?

Discussion Celiac and a Sorghum allergy

I was diagnosed with celiac a good 11 years ago along with my son. We've been great since but one unexpected thing that I figured out quickly after is that I'm also allergic to Sorghum. Not terribly so, kind you. I can tolerate small amounts but anything made from mostly sorghum hurts my tongue and slightly swells my tongue and throat. It's enough that I don't eat it. I never knew of this allergy because sorghum is relatively rare on non GF food.

The thing is, I've never met anyone else with a sorghum allergy. Is it that rare? Anyone here in the same boat? Did I simply win the genetics lottery?

Question Celiac and pancreatitis

My husband is newly diagnosed with celiac at age 65. He has a history of 4-5 bouts of pancreatitis (he doesn't drink alcohol at all) over the years that landed him in the hospital for several days each time. They ever really found a cause aside from the presence of a neuroendocrine tumor which has not grown at all over the past 10 years. Is there any correlation between celiac and pancreatitis? Just wondering.

Rant Family does not take my diagnosis seriously

So I was recently diagnosed about a month ago. My symptoms prior to diagnosis were pretty vague. I didn’t have a lot of GI issues other than bloating. However, my cousin has had Celiac for the last 10 years and her symptoms are severe enough to cause an ER visit if she accidentally eats gluten. Because my case isn’t as severe as hers, my family acts like I just have a mild intolerance and are not taking cross contamination seriously. I am getting so frustrated!

Question I want sushi — need advice

Hi so I miss eating sushi and have just been avoiding it cause of the hassle to figure it out.

Commonly I see the store bought sushi in grocery stores like metro, Canadian superstore etc but I worry about the cross contamination with the tempura and some imitation crabs can have gluten.

Do they likely change gloves between rolls? Or are they most likely contaminated?

If eating out are you still able to go to an all-you-can-eat sushi? And if so how do you approach it to make sure it stays gluten free without cross contamination

If going out to a restaurant what sort of questions do you ask and precautions do you take?

Ik to ask for gluten free soy sauce or even bring ur own, but idk if I remember seeing something about the vinegar they may use, sauces etc

How healthy is schar bread compared to regular (with gluten) bread?

What about compared to potatoes or rice?

I mean in terms of calories and general nutrition.

No Recipe gf enchilada lasagna

wanted to try lasagna style enchiladas because i hate when stuff is too drenched in sauce and too mushy! this gave me such a well rounded texture.

i personally also hate corn tortillas so more traditional style enchiladas are hard because the tortilla cracks, so i decided to go a different route entirely.

sautéed veggies, vegan refried beans, xtreme wellness street tortillas, and homemade enchilada sauce.

absolutely will be making again!

🤍😍

My mom got me this from Woodmans and I think it might actually be better than my current favorite, the BFree home style sandwich bread. It’s super soft and doesn’t have any weird flavor. Let me know if you have tried this yet!

Rant Been glutened

And this is why I'll do my best to never become complacent again.

I've been coeliac for the last 14 years. I've grown up coeliac. I've grown up checking labels. I've grown up knowing how to check for gluten.

And there was a chocolate that I fucking love, and it was incredible. And I would get it when it was cheap.

I got it today and after having a square I thought "I didn't check the ingredients". And I checked.

Wheat starch.

Gluten.

I've been glutened.

I already feel mad nauseous, my brain is filled with cotton, and my skin feels so sensitive.

I feel like such a fucking idiot. I've always been good about checking labels. Then I trust the chocolate, and I didn't check it one time. And I've been glutened.

Far out man.

Far out.

Question One Pot, minimal kitchen usage recipes?

That title is a little weird but i will be on a vacation this week. We booked an AirBnB with a kitchen and i am taking my own cooking pot, a cutting board and knife with me. Now.. i want to avoid as much contact to that kitchen as possible but i have no idea what to cook then. There is this microwave rice that i quite like which is ideal but i cant eat that 5 days in a row plus its expensive 😅

We plan on hiking every day so i probably also dont have the energy to stand for long... It doesnt need to be nice or fancy. Just filling so i have enough energy for the hikes, quick and it would be an absolute bonus if its also cheap :)

I am notoriously bad at coming up with things to cook since i usually rotate through the same stuff every week so i could really need some help on ideas :')

Realistically, I absolutely adore Fidough and all its glory. However, how would a trainer with Celiac encounter this little guy? Full mask and gloves from a distance? Poor little guy…. I like to believe the shiny version is the GF one!

Thank you for listening to my TedTalk.

Question Other weird secret triggers besides oats? Store bought snack recomendations?

For those who are messed up by oats, is there anything else that tends to be listed as Gluten Free but still messes you up? I am affected by wheat and found out I am also getting messed up bad by oats, and now I'm worrying if there's a secret third or fourth thing.

Also, if any of you in the USA have any cheaper dairy free oat free GF store bought snacks, instant meals, or milk recommendations, I'd appreciate any recommendations a ton. Low histamine would be an incredible grail.

Discussion Celiac and Allergic to Oats.

Hello everyone. I was officially diagnosed with Celiac Disease 4 years ago after suspecting it for years and not eating gluten for 5+years. I was happy to have gluten free oats because I love everything oats; oatmeal, granola, my favorite cookies made with oat flour. It was nice to have oats as a snack that was safe. However, over the last year every time I ate oats I'd feel extremely nauseous and get throbbing headaches. When I used oat products like Aveeno I'd get large pus-filled welts out of nowhere. It turns out that I'm now allergic to avenin, the protein in oats. I have to stop eating immediately and also stop using any skin products containing oats.

I'm wondering if anyone has this allergy? It was already hard enough for me to find food with my Celiac. Now I can't eat oats, even if they are certified gluten free, or use oat containing products. I'm just frustrated I guess.

Question What do i do if i physically cannot afford to be celiac

Hi:)

I am in the process of being diagnosed with celiac every doctor involved is 1000% positive i am but i have a problem.

I live in the uk and im disabled and a full time young carer for my mum and brother we live exclusively on benefits becausemy wage from beinga TA is not enough, im also an athlete so i need to eat more then the average person.

I in no way what so ever can afford to actually eat safely but i am in agony every single day what am i actually meant to do every cheap item of food is not safe, you can't get gluten free food on the NHS anymore and the food bank can't give me more then a weeks worth to cover 3 months and thats for someone who Isnt actively competing every other weekend.

Am i supposed to just be in pain 24/7?
