Advice Holy that was fast

I started a new account on Tuesday and deposited a cashier's check drawn on a different bank for 5 figures as the initial deposit. I'm checking my mobile app and the full amount minus what I paid to have my new card expedited is showing in the account. Is it possible for a cashier's check to clear in 2 days or should I wait at least a week to spend any of it?

Other Why are ach transfers between banks so slow in the US?

• Upvotes

And will they ever get faster ? Yes I know there's apps like Zellle that offer instant transfers, I was just wondering why is it so slow between banks? The other day I just transferred $20 from Citibank to chase. I know I could have used another app to send it faster , but I just wanted to see how long it will take. It's been 4 days and still nothing yes 4 business days. It still says pending in progress 😆 . I was just in Mexico City last month and my cousin showed me that over there Bank transfers , which is basically like an an ach transfer happen in seconds.I didn't believe her Obviously I told her no, you're lying. I thought impossible that a country like mexico is better in this, She told me let me show you. I have 2 different bank accounts. She did she sent 5000 pesos. Which is equivalent to 300 US dollars, she transferred them between Santander bank to BBVA bank both diffrent Mexican banks , it was the same exact process as here in the US it asked for account number and something similar to a routing number it was a bunch of numbers something called a CLABE so yea it was basically like a routing number . Once she clicked submit on the Santander bank app , She got a notification twenty seconds later on BBVA bank app that said she had just received 5000 pesos . I was just shocked in awe.I couldn't believe it , I was oh dam 😳😳. It's crazy how $20 here in the U.S are still pending in 4 days while in Mexico, what would be equivalent to $300 dollars was sent instantly between banks.I just don't get it. Is there any plans for the US to speed up their system?Or what I was just wondering.. ?

Advice ATM error resulted in someone’s else’s check going into my Account

So about 3 weeks, I went to my local Bank of America using the drive thru ATM to deposit some cash. I put my card in, clicked deposit cash and tried putting my money in. At this point however, the ATM screen froze and the machine was stuck and not taking the money. I tried clicking cancel, tapping the screen and nothing. This was after 5:00pm so no one was in the building, I waited for about 5-10 minutes and drove off with the screen frozen. This has happened before a year ago and nothing has happened from it.

I drive off and go to Barnes and nobles and I check my account before purchasing a book, but now I see that there is a check deposit for $2200. Obviously this wasn’t mine and there was someone behind me waiting to use the ATM so I can only conclude the machine glitched and he was able to deposit their check but went into my account. I didn’t move it or anything and called Bank of America around 10:30pm and spoke with customer service. They took all the info down and said they made a report and that was it.

I wanted to be sure everything was fine so I went into the same local Bank of America a few days later to make them aware of the situation. I speak with the teller and he says he’s never seen this before and that the check was cleared and processed. I wait to speak with one of the managers but the teller tells me the manager said, everything should be taken care of just wait a few days.

It’s been 3 weeks now and the money is still sitting there. How long does this process usually take? I’m not really comfortable with this money sitting there and having to track and make sure I’m not spending the money on accident.

Regulations/Laws Anybody Else Remember When Banks Used To Compete For Your Business?

When I was 12 years old (back in 1973), my mother took me to the bank with a couple dollars from my piggy bank and helped me open a passbook savings account. It paid 5%. At the very same time, the Prime Rate (in July 1973) was around 8%.

Today, the prime rate sits at 7%. The average savings account at a brick and mortar bank today is between 0.22 - 0.65%.

Banks no longer even try to compete for your business. When my generation dies off (and I know for a lot of you that can't come soon enough, lol) nobody will be alive who even remembers the era when banks actually tried to compete for your business.

This isn't a question of survival for these banks, they all make record profits every years thanks to 18-24% credit card interest and swipe fees. Banks are clearly colluding to keep savings rates artificially low! Why is everybody okay with this?

I know there are other places where you can do better, for example High Yield Savings Accounts with minimum deposit thresholds that only people like me can access. I personally keep a bunch of money in my brokerage settlement account (large broker with name that starts with V) that as of today is paying 3.81%.

I always hear people claiming that deregulation of the banking industry is good for consumers, but it clearly is not.

Am I missing something, or are people just inherently stupid? Do people not realize that banks no longer feel the need to compete for your business, and clearly work with each other to keep savings interest rates at the crumb level, while simultaneously charging crushing rates on both mortgages and credit cards?

US International fee

I looked at my checking account and seen that I had a $0.32 international transaction fee followed by a $14.00 non bank withdrawal fee but has been waived. I’m not sure what’s happening. Never ordered anything from overseas let alone online for a while now. Was wondering if anyone had this before. Also haven’t used my debit card in a few days

Advice Dispute a charge

Less than three months ago, I got some bank accounts. I made a Zelle account using my number, but I selected the wrong digit and sent money from my Bank of America account to that Zelle account. I forget about that transaction, and now when I'm looking back at my account, I'm wondering if it's possible to dispute that charge? And if so, how? I asked Bank of America customer service, and a wonderful women said to contact Zelle directly. I'm still unsure how to proceed, since I'm not sure exactly how to do so. It would be lovely if someone would help, thank you!

Advice Question about external account setup for ACH deposit

The good ones use cross-bank authentication like plaid, while others rely on good-n-old trial deposits, and some fancy ones have an app taking selfie et el. But this bank I'm dealing with require me to email driver license and full bank statement over public email to verify ownership before allow setup external account.

I recall SMTP email are not secure, and those two documents contain enough information to pass most security verification. Can I trust this process, or skip and look somewhere else? Thanks

Advice Is it normal to struggle counting large amounts of money early on?

Im 20 and I just started working as a loan agent. I’m not sure if this still applies to banking but it’s financial so I thought I’d ask this here.

I’ve been working at this job for about a month now. I’ve never been in the finance/bank industry and I previously worked in IT, then I went to Animal Care, now I’m here. I’m not strong at math and honestly thought I wasn’t good at counting but apparently I am doing just fine if I count super slow.

When we give loans, most times it’s in cash and in very large amounts. I had to count out 1843.00 today. I did it in about 3 minutes, maybe a little less. But by 1400.00, I was already starting to black out and forget especially because I was organizing my piles VERY poorly.

Is it normal for new tellers and loan agents to ‘struggle’ with keeping up with counting large amounts of money early on or is that a reflection of my intelligence? I’d like this job to be a good fit for me but not if I’m not a good fit for IT.

Advice What do you consider Financial Abuse?

For context, I am in my late 20s for , when I first wanted to be financially independent (during Covid) I decided to cut access to my joint account with my dad. I was unable to at the time because he became extremely violent and upset about this action. He never explained why this was a bad idea. He just refused to help. I do not remember what he said exactly since this was a few years ago. I do know I felt uncomfortable and defended in the situation. However, I am not sure if this is financial abuse. On the bright side, I made a new bank account with a separate bank to prevent him from monitoring my finances.

When do you know someone is committing financial abuse ? Or How can you tell if they are just an overprotective parent?

Canada Is the Investment Funds in Canada (IFC) worth it?

Hi everyone, for context, I'm a 3rd-year Political Science student with over 2 years of retail experience involving customer service and sales. I'm looking to start a career in financial services, and I figured that entry level retail banking roles like CSR, CEA, Client Advisor, or Personal Banking Associate would be a good starting point. However, despite submitting 150+ applications to various banking positions over the last 2 months, I've only managed to land one interview, which unfortunately didn't progress beyond the initial screening stage. As such, I've been considering completing IFC or the CSC to strengthen my qualifications and potentially improve my chances of getting hired.

For those currently working in retail banking, would obtaining either of these certifications make me a more competitive applicant? Or would I be better off waiting until I'm hired, given that some positions allow candidates to complete the required accreditation during training?

I'd also appreciate any advice on how someone without a finance or business degree can better position themselves for these opportunities.

Advice Failed ATM transaction, is there anything I can do?

I went to a drive up ATM at a local credit union (where I have an account) on 9/22 and tried to withdraw $300 from my checking account with a different national bank. When it came time to dispense the cash, door opened, no cash came out and a message popped on the screen saying "error dispensing cash, transaction canceled." It returned my card and went to an out of order screen. I figured no big deal and went to another bank up the road and got cash out. Come Monday the initial transaction clears, $300 is withdrawn from my account (as well as the actual cash I withdrew elsewhere). So I call the credit union, they say they can't help, call the bank. I call the bank, they say they will dispute it and issue me a temporary refund. Then I get a message from the bank yesterday saying "Merchant provided documentation showing no error occurred and cash was received. For this reason, our investigation is now complete and the dispute is closed." and they take the $300 back. But there was an error. I didn't get the cash.

How does this happen? Can I dispute this further? With who? Can I request the documentation? Wouldn't the Credit Union notice their ATM was out of order? I mean don't they have to reconcile the records with cash on hand? How common is this? Thanks for any help or guidance you can give. It not a huge amount of money but it's not nothing and it feels really unfair.

US Help Please: credit card point redemption has resulted in broken gift card link, what do I do!

I redeemed cash back points on my chase credit card and the email came with the link to access the credit card but the website won't work. It gives me a 504 domain error. I called my credit card company and they wanna send me another link but I don't think it will work. Why does the egift.activationspot website not work. work and what even is this website? The lady on the phone was directed by her team to send me another link but I never even got another email! It was chase customer support. Granted this all happened within the last hour but I googled and apparently others have had similar issues and contacting support so far via phone has not come to anything yet because I am fairly certain this gift card redemption website does not work. I can not access my nintendo eshop giftcard and if I can't I want my points back!

Advice Stuck wire transfer from Bank of America to HSBC Singapore

I sent a wire transfer in USD, under 10K USD, from my Bank of America Checking personal account to my own Every day Global Savings account at HSBC Singapore. The BIC listed by HSBC Singapore is HSBCSGS2 and Bank of America filled in HSBCSSGS2GPI

https://www.theswiftcodes.com/singapore/hsbcsgs2gpi/

From my online searches the GPI suffix just creates more tracking via the GPI system. It's been a week and there is nothing in my Singapore account. Bank of America gave me a UETR tracing number which shows the following according to uetr dot ai

I also asked Bank of America to trace it. I had no idea SIWFT transfers in Dollars are so difficult.

I also did an instant transfer to the same account in SGD to Wise just now. It's amazing. I should have done that for the original transfer.

Any advice or ideas? Has someone else gone through this? Will they eventually find the money? Any suggestions on how to get the transaction unstuck?

Thank you in advance

Advice I'm 16 and confused on what bank to open up with. Any advice?

Okay, so I recently turned 16, and my grandma gave me 3,000 dollars because my grandpa was in the military and something happened that caused them to give us a crazy amount of money.

The point is, is that I got a bunch of money, and I'm planning to save it, but I don't know what bank to open up a checking and savings with because I have 0 knowledge of this stuff.

I was thinking Capital One, but I was told that wasn't too good because there is no physical location where I live. And I was told to do US bank, but I was also told that that wasn't good either.

If anyone has any good suggestions on banks to choose, and what to look for in good banks, or financial tips it eould help a ton! :)

US Why does sending money between different banks work differently in the US and UK?

I’m from the UK and have flown out to the US multiple times, specifically California, where I’ve spent time with friends and experienced everyday life there.

One thing I’ve been curious about is how people send money to each other. In the UK, I can generally open my banking app, enter someone’s sort code and account number, and transfer money directly to them, regardless of which bank they use.

From conversations with friends in California, I’ve noticed that people often rely on services like Zelle, Venmo, Cash App and PayPal to pay each other.

I’m curious about the banking side of things:

Why does the experience vary between banks?

Are delays mainly caused by payment networks, individual banks, fraud prevention or something else?

Given that instant-payment infrastructure exists in the US, what prevents it from being universally available to consumers?

I’d appreciate perspectives from people working in banking, payments or financial technology. I’m trying to understand the differences rather than assume one system is necessarily better.

US StoneCo $STNE Settlement FAQ: Who’s Eligible for the $ $26.75M Payout?

Hey guys, I posted about this settlement before, but since they’re considering late claims, I decided to share it again with a little FAQ.

So here's all I know about this agreement:
StoneCo was accused of misleading investors about its expansion into Brazil’s credit business. Investors filed a lawsuit over the alleged misstatements.
Now the company has agreed to settle $26.75M with investors.

Who can claim this settlement?
If you bought $STNE between 2020 and 2021, you may be eligible. You don’t need to still own the shares to claim.

Do I need to sell/lose my shares to get this settlement?
No. You can potentially qualify even if you already sold your $STNE shares, as long as your transactions fall within the class period and meet the settlement requirements.

How long does the payout process take?
It typically takes 4 to 9 months after the claim deadline for payouts to be processed, depending on the court and settlement administration.

I missed the deadline. Can I still claim?
Yes, late claims are currently being considered for compensation, subject to approval. Check if you're eligible and file your claim here.

Hope this info helps

Advice 2nd Fraud attempt from same entity after card replacement, help!

A couple of weeks ago my bank caught weird charges coming across and notified me. The charges were all from Xbox in small amounts. I disputed and got a new card issued, no big deal.

Then today I wake up to another message from BofA of the same activity from Xbox on my new card! Only this time they didn’t catch it till I lost about $1,600! So of course I immediately canceled my card AGAIN. I hadn’t even had that new one long enough to pay all my bills yet, so I’m not sure how this happened. I used the card for my Apple Pay and that’s the only thing I can think of?? This is so frustrating! The only thing I can think of is when the bank forwards your new card details to some merchants to keep payments going but I don’t know…
