Environment: Wii U running Aroma with ISFShax and Minute
- Introduction
Hello, my name is Joshua.
I encountered a Wii U problem for which I could not find a working guide. Searches on Google, AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini, and other troubleshooting resources repeatedly led me in circles without resolving the issue.
After nearly an entire day of troubleshooting on Monday, October 12, 2026, I eventually figured out a solution myself. I'm documenting the process here in the hope that it helps someone else experiencing the same problem.
Important: These are the steps that worked for my console. This is not a guarantee that the same procedure will resolve every Wii U homebrew launch error.
- Symptoms and Error Details
My Wii U was running the Aroma environment.
The symptoms were as follows:
- Aroma plugins: Worked normally.
- NUSspli and Homebrew App Store: Failed to launch and displayed error code "157-1101".
- Other homebrew applications: Some, including Wii Shell and Wii Album, hung during startup.
- Recovering from a hang: I had to hold down the power button on the Wii U console, or possibly the GamePad, to shut down the system.
Error "157-1101" is associated with a title-launch failure. In my case, the error was consistent with the system failing to locate or launch the required title.
- Background: What Happened Before the Problem?
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, I was attempting to get RedNAND working. The process failed multiple times.
Eventually, I noticed that I could still launch games, but my homebrew applications no longer worked.
I also discovered that the Health and Safety application had disappeared from the Wii U Menu. I'm not completely certain what caused it to disappear, but I noticed the problem during my RedNAND troubleshooting.
An earlier troubleshooting suggestion was to check whether the Health and Safety title existed in system memory. I checked and found that the title was present, but it was not registered or appearing on the Wii U Menu.
That discovery led me to investigate whether it was possible to import MLC titles using MLCRestorerDownloader.
I found that it was possible, and this eventually led to the solution.
- Requirements
Before beginning, make sure you understand the following requirements.
Main requirement
- ISFShax must already be installed on the Wii U.
Additional requirements for Windows users
- A valid dump of your console's "otp.bin".
- The MLCRestorerDownloader PC application.
- The "otp.bin" file placed in the same folder as the application's executable.
Important safety note: This procedure involves erasing and rebuilding MLC data. Make sure you have the appropriate backups for your console and understand which NAND is being modified before proceeding. The procedure below describes my experience and should not be treated as a substitute for verifying the correct procedure for your particular setup.
- Prepare the MLC Title Installation Files
Step 1: Prepare MLCRestorerDownloader
Download and open the MLCRestorerDownloader PC application.
Place your console's "otp.bin" in the same folder as the executable.
Launch the application.
Select Option 1 and press Enter.
Select the option corresponding to your Wii U's console region.
Press Enter and follow the application's instructions.
Step 2: Prepare the SD card
After completing the PC application steps, check that the SD card contains the required files.
At the root of the SD card, there should be a folder named:
"wafel_install"
This folder should contain the 52 title subfolders generated for the installation.
The following files should be located in:
"SD:/wiiu/ios_plugins/"
- "00core.ipx"
- "5isfshax.ipx"
- "5payldr.ipx"
- "wafel_setup_mlc.ipx"
Make sure the filenames and folder paths are correct before proceeding.
Step 3: Check the Minute configuration
Locate:
"SD:/minute/minute.ini"
Check the "autoboot" setting.
- If you do not use autoboot, make sure it is not configured to launch an unintended target.
- If your setup requires autoboot for this procedure, set "autoboot = 3" as appropriate for your configuration.
Do not change this setting blindly: confirm that the value is correct for your installed ISFShax/Stroopwafel setup.
- Prepare the Wii U Using Minute
Before installing the MLC titles, I used the Minute menu to prepare the system.
Boot into the Minute menu.
Open the Backup and Restore options.
Select Erase MLC.
Select Erase scfm.img as well.
Follow the additional requirements and instructions for your installation method.
Warning: Erasing MLC and "scfm.img" is destructive. Do not proceed unless you have verified that these operations are appropriate for your console and have secured the necessary backups. This is particularly important if your Wii U has NAND-related problems or you are trying to preserve an existing SysNAND.
- Install the MLC Titles
Once ISFShax is installed and the SD card is prepared:
Insert the SD card into the Wii U.
Power on the console.
Allow the configured installation process to start.
If not Automatic, it's option 3.
Watch the console's LED. During the installation, mine flashed blue.
Wait until the blue flashing stops.
In my case, the process took approximately 15–30 minutes.
Do not interrupt the installation. Wait until the LED stops flashing before powering off the console.
- Verify the Repair
After the installation finished:
Power off the console only after the activity indicator stopped flashing.
Power the Wii U back on.
Check whether the Health and Safety application has returned to the Wii U Menu.
Launch the homebrew applications that previously failed.
Check whether NUSspli and Homebrew App Store launch without error "157-1101".
Verify that the other applications no longer hang during startup.
Final Result
For my Wii U, restoring the MLC titles resolved the problem.
The Health and Safety application reappeared, and the homebrew applications that previously failed to launch were working again. The plugin functionality that had continued working throughout the issue was unaffected.
My experience suggests that the problem was related to the MLC title registration or installation state, rather than a general failure of Aroma plugins.
I cannot say with certainty what originally caused the issue, but restoring the MLC titles was the solution that worked for me.
- Final Thoughts
I spent nearly an entire day trying to solve this problem. Most of the troubleshooting advice I found did not address the actual cause of my issue, and I repeatedly ended up going in circles.
The important clue was that the Health and Safety title still existed in system memory but was missing from the Wii U Menu. That pushed me toward investigating MLC title restoration rather than continuing to troubleshoot Aroma plugins.
I'm sharing this experience in case another Wii U owner encounters the same combination of symptoms: working Aroma plugins, homebrew applications failing with error "157-1101" or hanging, and the Health and Safety application missing from the Wii U Menu.
This is the solution that worked for me. Always verify the procedure against your console's configuration before performing destructive NAND operations.
