I take like 2-3 of these days per year. They're super fun, but it's also just not the same as when I was younger and could string several committed gaming days back to back to really immerse in a setting like Tamriel or the Capitol Waste.

u/MisanthropicBipedal 18h ago
Spending a whole summer in the Capitol Wasteland was an experience

Christmas break, 2009.
A young boy wrapped in a wool blanket sits in a rocking chair that's just a bit too big for him. His face illuminated by the space heater in front of him.
His hair is greasy & his mother is about to force him to take a break from sitting in that chair, from being in front of his TV.
He was gifted xbox live points for Christmas & used it to purchase the Fallout 3 DLC, the extra points were spent on some Halo accessories for his Xbox Avatar.
As he showers, his stomach growls & he thinks about how good some pizza pops with bell peppers would be while he explores Point Lookout.
He has just shy of a week left before school starts again. Later that night he'll hop on Runescape to talk to his friends about what they got for Christmas.
Life is simple.
I havent thought of this since I lived it. Thanks for that :,)

u/Test88Heavy 19h ago
It's rough. I wake up at 6:30am and don't sit down to play until 9:30pm so 15 hours of work, family, house, etc. I have to fight to stay awake some nights.
23
u/DNxHD36 19h ago
You should probably sleep instead. I've learned not to fight those tired moments -- I don't even enjoy the gaming much anyway at that point.
Is there a way you can work out pre-set game time? Like, I'll arrange with my wife to handle the kiddo for a fee hours on a Saturday afternoon so I can game (and of course I'll do the same for her when she wants to do something).
6
u/Test88Heavy 19h ago
That's the only time I get to myself M-F so I make it work. I've conditioned myself to function the same on less sleep and have been doing this for years.
4
u/crocospect 18h ago
I have 9-5 job and have to wake up at 5:30 everyday.
The main gripe I have is the commute time, probably consumed like 3-4 hours of my day (Depends on the traffic that day) just to commute between going to work and go back home.
Living cost near my office is expensive as hell, so it's a big no for my current income, which is why I ended up renting an apartment quite far from where I work.
Shit like this that really tires me out honestly, but gotta stay strong I guess..
→ More replies (2)3
u/Test88Heavy 18h ago
I hear you, it's a grind and commuting is just lost/ dead time that could be used for something more productive. Are you able to WFH if that were an option or do you need to be in every day?
3
u/crocospect 18h ago
Unfortunately no, other than some business trips, my job really requires me to be at office for five days.

u/PiccoloAwkward465 16h ago
Most nights lately I try to get in an hour of reading and put it down when I literally cannot retain info after a paragraph.

This is similar to me but 6:45 and about 10. I'm lucky that I'm playing on switch so I can take it to bed and play in 10 minute chunks until I'm ready for bed. It works for me but I'm certainly not making much progress in the games I play
27
u/splinks66 18h ago
Maybe its because I don't have kids or I just never grew up but I don't feel like this at all. Infact this past year I have played a lot of amazing games that were so good I was thinking about them all day at work and when I got home I was just as excited as when I was a kid to get home and play.
13
u/echoshatter 16h ago
Not having kids is a major boon to your free time.
I don't have kids either and I play way too many video games. Stuff isn't getting done around the house that needs attention because I can just go up into my game room and ignore it. It is worse in the summer when it's 95°F outside.

You're lucky, we die and leave nothing behind, except children as a living legacy. Some people just aren't meant to be parents and not everyone needs to have a child. It's better to live your life the way you would look back happy on your deathbed than be filled with regrets on your way out.
Life is short, play games.
19
u/stronkzer 19h ago
It feels the opposite way for me. I deeply value the two hours of gaming time I've got per day, and cherish every second of it now that I have funds to buy the games I want. And school wasn't a very fun part of my life.

Do yourself a favor and take a few days off work to get immersed, keep bringing the kids to daycare. Game is worth it.

u/Traditional_Entry183 16h ago
49 years old. Happily married. Two teenage kids. And I consider myself a good, involved dad. There has never been a point where ive stopped gaming. (Always single player, offline)
I just watch less and less TV, and dont have other hobbies.
3
u/dogearyourpages 13h ago
Yeah, I am a married woman with one kid but my husband and I both game. My husband has a game night with his brother every Wednesday (who also has two kids. We're also both in multiple dnd games that meet regularly.
It's totally possible to keep up hobbies once you have kids. Hell, my husband is currently teaching our daughter, who is six, how to play WoW.
3
u/Traditional_Entry183 13h ago
My guess is that the people who stop, or feel like they have to stop, either have jobs that absolutely control their lives more than the average person, or have extensive social lives that keep them busy with other stuff. Even when my kids were babies, Id stay up for a couple of hours after they went to bed to do my thing.

I hope you're grateful for your family. At the end of the day, fuck video games if you have a loving family.
2
u/Maxximillianaire 10h ago
Exactly. I've loved video games my whole life and will clear my schedule to play them right now while i'm single and without kids. But i would stop playing them without a second thought if i had a family to spend my time with instead
3
u/ProfessionalNo7946 17h ago
People in the game Wardogs, which im currently addicted to, call people “children less” if you’re a lot higher level than them
I am however completely lost on why this is a insult, as to me it seems that children are a thing for the rich, in time and money
And Im only rich in experience, so im very happy I don’t have a kid
3
u/Soszai 12h ago
Yep, with 2 young kids, I'm down to 1-2 major games per year. I'm really looking forward to playing with my kids though. The day one of them beats me at Mario Kart or Smash will be a glorious day.

Yea bro I get it.
Ive got a 4080/7800x3d PC, 45 inch oled monitor, and close to top of the line peripherals. Like a 5k set up when I did it all. Also have a steam library with hundreds of AAA games. However, I've been in bed since like 845. Literally gonna fall asleep right after this. Sometimes there's just no desire or want to play.
Being an adult sucks. Id so much rather be a 14 year old playing on shit hardware again while staying up past bedtime to raid in wow.

No see that's the point. Since I don't have to dedicate all my time and money to other people, I can afford to game more than your average parent and STILL have time for other hobbies and activities. I don't have to take my work home with me, and I have basically no obligations as long as my bills are paid, so I can do whatever I want all the time. I'm glad people can find fulfillment in raising children, but that's not for me, and I suspect a lot more parents regret it than are willing to admit it.

Reddit likes to think if you don’t immediately love something you are burned out or are depressed. Could be, but it’s more likely that you just aren’t trying a game you like and/or aren’t in the mood at the moment.
Same way you might not enjoy a movie or might not be in the mood to read a book.

I'm having a hard time playing video games right now. Especially after work. I work long days and after work I badly want to actually start getting into Trails 2nd Chapter (barely into the first chapter) but I feel like I can't sit down without being overwhelmingly tired or feeling the need to accomplish something "real." I badly want to just play for 8 hours and leave the world behind for a bit but can't.

For me, gaming has always been a form of escapism. But as I get older, what I need from it changes. When I was younger and had less experience with the world, games gave me things I wasn’t finding in everyday life.
Now that my life is fuller, with work, family, and little things I enjoy, I don’t feel the same need to escape. I still enjoy gaming, but it feels like one part of my life instead of the main thing I look forward to.
2
u/Ken_Erdredy 17h ago
Next: Gaming after work, run chores, make dinner, kiss the kids good night, clean the flat.
2
u/yamadath 17h ago
Just prioritize, less scrolling, less youtube, just do your adult things and straight to gaming.
You're burning 2-3 hours away on your phone for nothing eachday without realizing it. Everyone have time, it's just about priority.
2
u/FarQuail2091 17h ago
That's why 12 hour shifts are the best, work 3 days rest of the 4 days free to enjoy

I'm much more tired after a day of work than I ever was after a day at school. In class I was one of 30 students (ish), at work I'm actively engaged with meetings from 1-on-1 to maybe 5 people. Outside of meetings it's like I'm actively writing essays / doing homework the entire day.
2
u/hypnohighzer 16h ago
Then you're doing it wrong. A fat doob, and I'm playing on easy street. Or just a coupe hits from the penjamin. The wind down is the important part.
2
u/Independent_Salt_911 15h ago
To be honest it was exactly the opposite for me. School still to this day makes me spiral just thinking about it. Work is freedom.
2
u/Due-Independence6692 15h ago
I have 3 kids from 6, 2, and I’m in the hospital currently with the newborn. I’ve never stopped gaming, I’ve added 3d printing to my list of hobbies and learned 3D design. All while having kids. Yeah things change, you lose some you gain some. The guys complaining their lives were ruined just married the wrong person and don’t know how to time manage.
2
u/Imaginary_Dig_5014 15h ago
Not for me. Still enjoy playing games just as much if not more because I have less time to play them now. Still have plenty of online friends to sqaud up and talk shit with while we play. One of the best "escapes" of the usual push and pull struggles of life that I have and can always count on

u/MoonWun_ 14h ago
I’ve had some of my best and most cherished gaming sessions while employed. Especially when I got my puppy. I had very little time to game for like a month so when I got the odd hour here or there to play it was magic.
2
u/commiedetector 14h ago
I've always been pretty hyper so even when I'm dead tired I'm able to game. It's helpful sometimes, but I also feel like I never got enough sleep the next day.
2
u/Guilty-Log-9680 14h ago
Then you fall asleep in midgame session and wake up mid of the early morning like "wtf was i doing?". E.g. such games as Final Fantasy Rebirth, KCD 1 & 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Fallout 4, New Vegas, & 76, Warframe, Arc Raiders, Ark Survival ascended.

u/DrGonzoxX22 19h ago
I game before work now. I’ve been doing it since my daughter was born. My wife would give her breast before we were going to sleep, she would wake up around 4 in the morning so it was my turn (my daughter had a hard time with drinking from the breast so it was better to not wake everyone up and be all stressed because she wasn’t having any milk) so I would give her bottled breast milk around that time and she went right back to sleep until 8am. During that time I would watch a movie or play games and I would go back to sleep at 8am while my wife took the morning shift.
Since then I’ve changed shift at work so I’m day worker now and I wake up at 4am, drink a coffee or two while gaming and leave around 5:30 to work.

I've gotten to a point in life where I barely game during the work week if at all. I play mostly my switch 2 now in my limited time and my PC is definitely a weekend luxury now.
I'd rather read a little in the 4 hours I'm actually at home to relax.
1
u/Sufficient-Ferret-67 19h ago
I pad out my gaming by a couple days
I mainly play deadlock and Minecraft
On work days if I want to game I play Minecraft or ONE game of deadlock
On my long weekends I either play deadlock all day or Minecraft all day and it’s entirely vibe based. Luckily I got into deadlock early on so I’m in the top percentage of players so I really don’t have to grind to get better

This was never the case for me. When I went to school, every waking moment I played games instead of studying or doing homework, I was screwing myself a little bit, and my backlog of homework/study was always in the back of my mind when I gamed. Once I entered the 9 to 5 world, I was free, FREE after my workday ended, and could game as much as I fucking wanted without any adverse consequences.
I had the most free time as an employed bachelor. It wasn't until I had kids that the free time greatly diminished.
Still better than having homework. I've done a couple grinds for certifications in my work life and I can't describe how vehemently my body rejects homework and studying after hours. I am never doing that shit again.

I've felt this was with multiplayer games. Sometime around 2013 i just completely stopped playing them. I didn't like the dedicated time commitment to doing something with friends or random people on a routine basis, and something within me just broke. I have no idea why.
my "gaming" spent time is now basically random. i'll go weeks/months without playing something, and then have some sessions. Sometimes i play for 1 hour or so and stop. sometimes it's 3 hours, and once and awhile i do a 5-6 hour session. Usually this happens on a day off and ill stay up to 4-5am so i can enjoy it. haha i did that recently with Onimusha and beat it within 2 weeks or so.
I plan to take some time off here within the next month to play some games finally. Castlevania and OOT are priority.

You sit through a shift wanting to play a game you just bought - you come home eat and do some family stuff - you sit in front of PC - your entire body gives out and you fall asleep o7
