Academics Big Achievement To Celebrate

I feel very proud and honoured to announce that one of our very own students from UAlberta (me) has shown an extremely inspiring amount of discipline and initiative to actually start lecture 1 for his courses (now). This will greatly help him succeed and perform well for his midterm (in 6 hours) as midterms tend to be extremely important to one’s success in passing a course.

Professionals in the field reported, “these moments do not come often.” So please, have a smile on your face today, because it’s truly a prideful time in UAlberta’s history.

Thank You 🥹,
(me)

Rants Someone talk me off the ledge lol

I keep making dumb mistakes on tests and second guessing myself. I passed all of my midterms but just genuinely making dumb mistakes I wouldn’t be spiralling if I just straight up didn’t know what I was doing but I do 😭😭 idk why I feel so down but I wanted to boost my GPA this term and have a 4.0 term which honestly realistic for the classes I have this term but feel like I just blew it . Anyways someone tell me something nice 💔

Rants the beauty of toothbrushing

for the love of god with all offence included, please brush your teeth. like i know you can afford a tube of toothpaste if you can either use loans or other supports to attend uni. it’s genuinely an issue when i’m sitting in a lounge or library and i can smell the radiating gingivitis coming off of people when i’m not even directly beside them. (yes, gingivitis, very distinct smell). if it’s because of depression or other things okay that’s understandable i’ve been there but if you can show up to school you can spare some of that same energy to at least take a swig of mouthwash or pop some chewing gum in your mouth. id like to study while not being penetrated by the horrid smell of tooth decay if possible. also if you know your breath stinks, don’t be opening your mouth to talk!! if you think no one can smell it you’re most certainly mistaken. take advantage of the dental covered by tuition and spare the nostrils of your fellow peers from disintegrating.

Academics If anyone wants CMPUT help

Hellooo, well I'll mention this first that IM NOT MAKING A TUTORING AD OR ASKING FOR MONEY IN THIS POST

Im just offering help to anyone who may feel stuck in CMPUT courses just because I went through the same issues and I'm now in my 4th year and after having TAed a bunch i think i know how to help most people struggling with cmput courses. Also, i just like helping.

Ofc im not offering any tutoring or asking for money, just offering FRIENDLY help so that u can get that 4.0 in your cmput courses. I won't TEACH you the topics necessarily but I'll show you the path that may be helpful.

Anyway lemme know if u need any help.

Question What happened to those program requirement pages?

I'm looking for the mechanical engineering one specifically. There was a page that outlined every course you're supposed to take with links to every possible ITS and technical elective, idk where it went but it's just completely gone from the internet. Is the site just being maintained or did they remove it to torture us further?

Hello, I have a midterm pretty soon on Friday for Middleton and was wondering if anyone who happened to take his course before found the exam to be hard. I'm feeling slightly unprepared even though I'm a bit familiar with Greek myth. Please lmk, thank you

Admissions Did admission into U Of A suddenly become more competitive over the years? And how do they calculate averages in the application now?

Hey, so for context, I’m a student at a North High school in Edmonton and have applied to U Of A back on September 30th. I am someone who was waitlisted quite quickly and am not that shocked since I do know that the Physiology BsC major and Engineering sector is quite competitive, and am going to make a program change request asap. (For some reason it won’t let me even tho it’s been 14 days already…) I put in every course I could for the application but now am wondering if they calculated my average using all my courses when I only wanted them to look at 5 for the BsC. (Also , no, there wasn’t an option to select them for the specific programs . Not sure how to make the courses I wanted to be used work for the BsC.) average for 5 courses I was hoping they look at would be 94.4 (English messed up that averags..) and average for engineering would be 93. (Yeah now I know that’s too low….)

But, I realize that almost NOBODY else in my classes have been accepted for early admission, the ratio has been insane. Like 3 out of 30 people are being accepted into u Of A . And when I talked to my friend who has been in u Of A for 2 years, she had a lower grade 11 average than me and got into biochemistry. I know I didn’t select biochemistry, maybe I would’ve gotten in if I did. I’ve been told now to change the major to general Biological sciences .

But is it true that competition has gotten really crazy now? Like back in the day the average was 90 but now it’s 97? Thanks.

TLDR: Everyone is being waitlisted in my school and I’m want to know which major is the least competitive in 2026.

Question Haven - supposedly an app to help refugees with English practice - anyone tried it?

I keep getting ads on Instagram about this platform called Haven, where you can volunteer your time to video chat with refugees to help them improve their English. Has anyone else tried this and is it legit?

Haven's website: https://www.findhaven.org/en/

It seems like a great low-commitment way to help newcomers settle in, start working, etc. However I haven't found much information about Haven online (except for 2 positive Apple reviews from volunteers), and I don't usually make it a habit to video chat with strangers. Would love to know if anyone has experience with Haven, from both sides.

I'm planning to try it but only chatting with the same gender for now, to hopefully avoid creeps / catfishing. Will update on how it goes.

Question regarding SEM 210. When I was making my schedule in highschool, I was unaware of the ualberta calendar, and did not take SEM 210 in the first year. I see that’s it’s not a first year requirement, but will it impact me negatively second year if I take it then?
