(Question) How are children taught to learn the Tamil உ / ஊ combinations? Are there any tricks beyond memorisation?
I'm learning to read and write Tamil.
Most vowel signs seem relatively easy to understand because they appear as distinct marks around the consonant.
But உ (u) and ஊ (ū) are confusing me because they can change the shape of the consonant itself.
I grouped these combinations into a few visual patterns. I'm wondering whether this is a useful way to learn or whether I'm overcomplicating something that children learn naturally. I am curious about how children are taught the vowel symbols in Tamil. Please share tricks and tips or how you learnt this symbol part.

அறிவிப்பு (Announcement) "Deepavali, not Diwali" — Tamil Malaysians draw the line on word
It's Deepavali — not Diwali. And Malaysia's Tamils are drawing the line. 🦚
MIC deputy president and Tapah MP Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has written to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, demanding the word "Diwali" be removed from official festive arches and banners across Kuala Lumpur, including Brickfields' Little India, ahead of the November 8 festival. A copy of the letter went to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Saravanan argues "Deepavali" is the official, gazetted designation in Malaysia — and the correct one for Malaysia's Tamil community. "Diwali," he says, is the Hindi-speaking usage.
The dispute has made front-page news in Malaysia's Tamil dailies Makkal Osai and Malaysia Nanban. The ministry has yet to respond.
One word, one identity. What do you call it?

கேள்வி (Question) Why all Tamil movies are English subbed and not Tamil subbed ?
How is it possible that our own movies aren't subbed with our own script ?
Every Tamil movie is English subbed nowadays whereas it's not common to see Tamil subtitles.
For someone who is not comfortable with Tamil, watching a movie with Tamil subtitles is the best way to improve my vocabulary and understand every detail of the conversations.
Such a shame ...

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Thiruvalluvar was never Hindu, and he never worshipped Hindu gods.
people act like hindu was always the name of tamil religion but thats not what history shows, the word hindu came from sindhu which is connected to the indus river in the northwest, far away from tamil nadu where people had their own history and traditions around rivers like kaveri vaigai and thamirabarani. ancient tamil literature like tholkappiyam and sangam poems talks about the 5 thinai and their gods, seyon for kurinji mayon for mullai vendhan for marutham varunan for neithal and kottravai for palai, these traditions existed long before hindu became a common religious identity. tamils also had saivam vainavam samanam and bouddham with their own beliefs and practices, and its not right to just mix everything together and pretend they all had one identity from the beginning. the british census helped make hindu a broader administrative category in the 19th century but the history is more complicated than saying they invented the word, tamil religious traditions deserve to be understood through their own history instead of forcing every part of it under one label, we should be able to talk about tamilar samayam without people acting like tamil history started only when it got a north indian name.

Update: I’m building a Korean-learning app specifically for Tamil speakers — looking for feedback
Hi everyone,
A couple of months ago, I posted here about Dari, a project I’m building to help Tamil speakers learn Korean. That post reached more views that my expectations, so I wanted to return with a proper update.
See previous post for context here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tamil/comments/1vp0fhg/i_realized_learning_korean_through_tamil_made/
The idea behind Dari is simple: Tamil speakers shouldn’t always have to learn Korean through English, when Tamil is so much more similar to Korean than English is.
Since my previous post, I’ve created a new landing page and continued developing the course. It now includes:
- Tamil-aware explanations of Korean grammar
- Hangul lessons with Tamil-friendly pronunciation guidance
- Comparisons covering word order, particles and verb endings
- Korean audio and guided practice
I’m now trying to understand whether there is genuine demand for a Tamil-to-Korean web course and mobile app before I continue to build out more of it.
You can visit the landing page below to explore the idea, join the early-access list or tell me honestly whether you think it would be useful:
https://learnwithdari.com/early-access
Thank you to everyone who viewed or responded to my earlier post. Your feedback would be very helpful as I continue building this, especially because I also plan to expand the site for other language combinations such as Tamil to Hindi or Hindi to Tamil.
Thanks in advance!
DB

கேள்வி (Question) UK-born Tamil looking to improve my Tamil and eventually pursue a degree in Tamil Language & Literature
Vanakkam everyone!
I’m a Tamil born and raised in the United Kingdom. I’m fluent in spoken Tamil and speak it regularly at home, with my family and with my Tamil friends.
I attended Tamil school when I was younger but unfortunately stopped after Grade 2. So, whilst I learnt the basics of reading and writing Tamil, I never really progressed beyond that level.
I can read Tamil sentences and even some paragraphs, but it takes me quite a bit of time. My writing is also fairly limited. However, my spoken Tamil is fluent, and I have no difficulty communicating in the language.
I’ve always had a deep love and appreciation for Tamil, not just as a language, but for its history, literature, arts, culture and the thousands of years of heritage behind it.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve developed an even stronger desire to properly study Tamil and understand the language beyond simply speaking it.
My ultimate goal is to:
Become fully proficient in reading and writing Tamil.
Develop a deeper understanding of Tamil grammar, classical literature and literary history.
Complete my Tamil O-Levels and A-Levels (or equivalent recognised qualifications).
Eventually pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Tamil Language and Literature.
I’m not necessarily looking to make a career out of Tamil. This is something I genuinely want to pursue out of love for my mother tongue and our heritage.
I’d really appreciate some guidance from anyone who has studied Tamil academically, particularly those living in the UK or those who have pursued Tamil qualifications as adults.
Where should I start? Are there any particular books, online courses, institutions or examination pathways you’d recommend?
Is it realistic to work towards a degree in Tamil whilst living in the UK?
I know this is going to take years of dedication, but I’m more than willing to put in the effort.
To me, Tamil is more than just a language. It’s our identity, our history and our life. I genuinely believe that Tamil deserves a lifetime of dedication, and I want to dedicate a part of mine to learning, understanding and preserving her.
நன்றி! ❤️
