I bet a lot of teams’ slates look like this. Baseball is really tough to project.

54

u/Vagina_Woolf 2d ago

the mental fortitude it takes to to get out of the minors and establish yourself in the show isnt considered enough by fans I think.

the grind of professional baseball is unlike any other sport in that the slightest change in your motivation or self-belief can happen very easily, which can lead to more fatigue, both physical and mental, which invariably leads to changes in your biomechanics. and since baseball has such a small margin for error in those biomechanics, all of a sudden you're playing terribly with no obvious explanation.

just coming back from THAT takes a huge amount of mental focus, let alone coming back from an injury that changes your mechanics

15

u/KOBE_GYN 2d ago

Especially with teams so focused on bonus pool allocation and not taking the best player available

12

u/b_sketchy 2d ago

Came to say the same thing. I’d like to see the percentage of all stars who were also first round picks. I bet it’s pretty low.

11

u/Content_Thing_4058 2d ago

It’s insanely low. There is no MLB first round draft in history where even 1/2 of the selections amounted to starting caliber big leaguers

3

u/AskGlum3329 1d ago

I'm not positive that's true, but it sounds true, so I'll accept it!

1

u/Content_Thing_4058 1d ago

It’s a little hyperbolic but it’s emotionally true

2

u/Technical_Stand9939 1d ago

you have to remember half the talent in MLB came from international signings- so were not even drafted in the first place.

All stars tend to make more than 1 ASG (if you get 1 you are more likely to get 2- like Harper has like 10).

I suspect is is much lower than one would think. Generally for top 10 prospects (which is a higher class than just 1st rounders) have about a 30% chance of being all stars. So it is lower than you think, since that % goes down pretty fast since maybe the guy who went 1.1 is going to be top 10 right away.

3

u/Technical_Stand9939 1d ago

Teams that almost always draft late tend to be in this boat. as you leave the top 5-10 the hit rate goes ways down. Most 1st rounders make the bigs (i think around 70%), but remember only 1 1st overall failed to reach the bigs, so as you get deeper into the first round it falls off.

This list lacks a guy who popped, but also has a lot of journeymen.

4

u/AskGlum3329 1d ago

Ellsbury was a relatively close 2nd in the 2011 (?) MVP voting, and I think the led the AL in WAR that year. He was a very good player, and underrated. Maybe not "a guy who popped," but a very solid pick.

95

u/Pyramid_Head182 15 2d ago

Jay Groome, man. Whatta throwback. Ellsbury, Bard, Barnes, Benintendi are so far the only ones to have had respectable careers, no shade to David Murphy

13

u/ScoresGalore 1d ago

David Murphy 104 home runs .274 career average .765 ops 10 year career

Andrew Benintendi 133 home runs 11 years .265 career average .715 ops

If Andrew Benintendi had a respectable career, so did David Murphy who had a better career batting average and ops.

1

u/CryptographerFlat173 1d ago

Benintendi was a stud before that barely rib cage injury before he was traded away and never the same since. Still won the World Series, won a gold glove.

10

u/Icehorse19 1d ago

I’d argue Houck has been “respectable”

48

u/Benintendi_Catch 2d ago

Remember when Blake Swihart was the answer? Man… smh.

6

u/Thick_Journalist_808 2d ago

Dude had the best autograph I’ve ever seen. His first and last letters in his first name and last name are BEST.

2

u/LiveForMeow 12h ago

This is JBJ erasure

11

u/ndc8833 2d ago

They did my boy dirty

2

u/CryptographerFlat173 1d ago

Remember when they broke him by playing him against the monster

1

u/bobcollum 3h ago

They broke Daniel Bard too, trying to turn him into a starter.

1

u/rafuzo2 1d ago

I remember people going nuts about Ice Horse

1

u/SirDigbyChknCaesar 1d ago

I remember when people thought he was despite no evidence.

45

u/Famous-Egg-6136 2d ago

It’s amazing how many first rounders are busts

24

u/RaymondSpaget 2d ago

It's more amazing how many second-rounders are borderline HOFers. Lester and Pedroia. Maybe Tolle and Anthony, someday.

2

u/ScoresGalore 1d ago

Dont forget about Henry Godbout, a C2 and Anthony Eyanson 3rd rounder from 2025.
Henry Godbout hit 15 home runs in only 220 at bats. Went on a Gasper like tear to end the season. He can hit for a higher average too. If Mead doesnt stick at 2nd base, Godbout could be the guy. He got promoted to AA in season so I suspect him to start off with Portland but might be promoted to Worcester if he goes on another likely tear.

-8

u/musashisamurai 2d ago

Different sport, but wasn't Tom Brady like a 5th rounder or something? I've seen a resume he prepared assuming no one would draft him. Says a lot about analytics

35

u/irwinian ortiz 2d ago

Very famously a sixth round draft pick

10

u/rawspeghetti 2d ago

199

7th QB taken

2

u/hobbes543 1d ago

And now you have Brock Purdy who was MR Irrelevant, literally that last player taken in his draft year.

-4

u/rawspeghetti 1d ago

Ok Cool

He's not Brady

3

u/SolarStarVanity 1d ago

Really? I thought he was, thanks for clarifying.

15

u/Plutor 2d ago

Tom Brady was an 18th round pick for the Expos.

7

u/PlatinumTheDragon 2d ago

Different sports are not really comparable. In the NBA the hit rate in the first round ranges from 40-95%, NFL expects a hit rate of 66%, in MBL the median first round pick has a total career WAR of 0. Interestingly the uncertainty of the draft correlates to the rounds in the draft and total roster spots (including practice squad & affiliates) on the teams.

3

u/RaymondSpaget 2d ago

Brady was not at all highly-regarded, coming out of Michigan (he had a fine senior season, but was always overshadowed by Brian Griese). The only QB anybody was excited about in that class was Marc Bulger.

The stuff that made Brady a winner - stuff that almost nobody has - just can't be quantified, or sometimes even identified.

-6

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

6

u/Then-Contract-9520 2d ago

Brady was 6th round

74

u/Scotty1230 2d ago

I don’t know why I thought Barnes was a journeyman reliever who was thrown into the closer role. He had that vibe.

31

u/Corn1989 2d ago

Thought Hansen and bard both would have been closers for the Red Sox

32

u/victorspoilz 2d ago

Wasn’t Bard lights out in the bullpen until we tried to turn him into a starter and then he sucked at both forever after?

33

u/John_Self_2077 2d ago

Yes and no. He sucked at both forever after in his Red Sox existence. Then was out of baseball for a few years. Then was coaching high school kids, who convinced him to try again. Then caught on for a few really good years in Colorado.

16

u/Buckscience 2d ago

I remember being so happy for him when he returned with Colorado.

10

u/am153 wally 1d ago

bard was an elite reliever for us in 2010 which prompted the failed transition to a starting role.

8

u/Dinobot2_ 1d ago

I do recall him really sucking in September 2011. I think he cost Wakefield his 200th win like 4 times, not to mention his role in the eventual collapse (though obviously he was far from the only thing that went wrong).

4

u/StrangeHombr3 1d ago

Holy crap this just stirred memories of Wakefield almost getting that 200th win.

Googles

It took Tim Wakefield 51 days (from July 24, 2011, to September 13, 2011) to go from 199 to 200 career wins. • Win No. 199: July 24, 2011 (against the Seattle Mariners) • Win No. 200: September 13, 2011 (against the Toronto Blue Jays) • The Drought: He went winless across 8 consecutive starts (0-for-8 or 0-for-9 span) over a 51-day stretch before finally earning his 200th victory.

24

u/Scotty1230 2d ago

Bard was pretty great until they said “let’s Joba Chamberlain him.”

3

u/Then-Contract-9520 2d ago

Didn't they try fucking with Papelbon too?

17

u/OrangeKun15 50 2d ago

Other direction. Pap was a starter in his rookie appearances in 2005 and then took over as closer in 06. I don’t remember them trying to reverse that decision though.

9

u/cstar84 2d ago

OP is kinda correct in that they did try making him back into a starter after his legendary 2006 season tho. Gave up on it before the season started tho, thankfully.

9

u/MaineSoxGuy93 15 1d ago

I think it was discussed in the offseason/early spring training and then Papelbon went to Francona and said if it was okay, he wanted to still close.

Francona was delighted since trying to replace a Papelbon in the bullpen would have been much harder.

4

u/whoamdave 2d ago

I randomly had that same thought lately. He was strictly a reliever after those 3 starts in '05.

1

u/joelee__ 1d ago

Accumulating 5 WAR as a closer is wild. If he didn't get shut down in September he probably would have won ROTY over Verlander.

2

u/Scotty1230 2d ago

He was pretty unhittable but did he have other pitches?

1

u/Minute-Marketing7434 1d ago

i dont remember his pitxhes.. seems like that’s something that has changed a lot recently in general. starters. they used to have 3 pitches.. now theyve got about 6. anyways pap was having shoulder subluxation issues.

1

u/Ironbaun-Vermont 1d ago

They wanted to go back to having him start and were actively stretching him out at the start of spring training but then Papelbon went to Francona and told him he wanted to remain closer because he knew he could do it and the team didn’t have a clear alternative.

Similar to the conversation Miller had with the Padres this year. He likes it and wants to keep doing it.

1

u/Corn1989 2d ago

Yep! Once he went into the rotation he had lost control and had the yips

1

u/OrlandoMB 1d ago

Yup. He had electric stuff. His change-up would get clocked around 89. And then they broke him….

3

u/zamboniman46 2d ago

I remember being so hyped for Hansen

3

u/Calm-Helicopter-1237 2d ago

Saw him in Portland in 2005 as he was a buzz saw through the minors. He looked like peak Gagne against the competition

19

u/macdaddyx4 Bellhorn 2d ago

I was so excited for Craig Hansen. We definitely rushed him to the majors.

7

u/johnnyconcussion 2d ago

Doing great work catching predators now though

2

u/DependentDish2066 1d ago

That’s Chris, his big brother.

26

u/CriscoCamping 2d ago

I think the Sox screwed Swihart. He hit just fine, really good for a C, but he didn't know how to call a game at ML level.

Stuck him in the outfield and he broke his leg on the wall.

Why not fucking teach him how?

1

u/nonaegon_infinity 1d ago

Should have gone to UTexas instead.

21

u/Harry-Flashman redsox7 2d ago

Teal and Montgomery look like they are going solid picks but both were traded for Crochet

17

u/cyberchaox Tek 2d ago

Yeah but Crochet is an ace.

8

u/Harry-Flashman redsox7 2d ago

I am not saying it was a bad trade, just that both of those players seem to be solid picks

1

u/Technical_Stand9939 1d ago

and then try traded Kyson (and Eyanson, and 2 other prospects) for a catcher (Adley)

-7

u/EdgarAllenFro 2d ago

Crochet might not ever be the same. We got fleeced.

3

u/killallrockstars 2d ago

Your general logic was fleeced.

8

u/Content_Thing_4058 2d ago

This is bad, yes, but if you look at most years first round picks in MLB it’s like a 5-10% hit rate on starting caliber big leaguers. It’s not like any other sport in this way. So hard to predict how guys will develop/such a long lead up from being drafted to actually contributing in the league with infinite variables to mess things up along the way.

7

u/gstormcrow80 Wakefield 1d ago

Mookie Betts - 2011 - 5th Round, 172 overall

6

u/parkcity1998 2d ago

I remember thinking Korbin Vitek would be so good

17

u/uncleshady Sweat Caroline 2d ago

hes almost Korben Dallas and Jason Varitek, so I can see why you'd think so.

7

u/trickponies 2d ago

Bard was electric at times. Watched Tito absolutely torch Hansen’s arm in one of those 6hr games vs the yankees in like 06 or 07ish?

9

u/ipsumdeiamoamasamat 2d ago

Bobby V/Cherington ruined him, Cherington by demanding he be a starter and Valentine by being an asshole who left the kid out there way too long in his starts as a way of showing him up. The logical thing after three starts where he struggled was move him back to the pen, but no. I’m glad Bard rebounded and ended his career on a better note in the NL. He never should’ve been put in that spot tho.

3

u/Firecracker048 2d ago

Bard never should have been a starter. He was built for 8th/9th inning spots

3

u/trickponies 2d ago

Oh I mean Tito torched Hansen, not Bard. Bard’s collapse was totally on Cherington

5

u/sderby 2d ago

Ice Horse represent

6

u/GeoffBAndrews 2d ago

Where Jackie Bradley Jr at? He was also a first rounder in 2011.

12

u/TurdFerguson22 50 2d ago

He was in the supplemental first round. Only thing I can think of why he’s not on here

49

u/LowCritical1057 2d ago

This is so bad

49

u/BeerGogglesFTW 2d ago

How does it compare to other teams though? (I honestly don't know)

I feel like MLB draft is one of the more unpredictable drafts where 1st rounders may amount to nothing.

14

u/b_sketchy 2d ago

Football: big, strong, fast
Basketball: tall, quick, hands
Baseball: uh.. what position do we need?

27

u/BeerGogglesFTW 2d ago

What position will we need in 5 years?

7

u/b_sketchy 2d ago

That’s more accurate

2

u/Minute-Marketing7434 1d ago

thats the thing… the other pro sports you go directly from draft onto the team maybe a starter if youre a higher 1st round… baseball can take years between college and mlb. strange since its so much less physicality than football or basketball

1

u/RaisingFargo 1d ago

what position can this SHORTSTOP be in 5 years

8

u/Idwant2baliar 2d ago

Not a single front office in the game drafts based on position. It just takes too long to reach the biggest. A lot can change

-6

u/Then-Contract-9520 2d ago

I can't imagine it would compare very well

15

u/Nusselt 2d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/p2AxCBYWhZ middle of the pack. Baseball is just that difficult to project. The draft also ignores the international scouting, but that is probably similar.

5

u/Saucy_Mcrib 2d ago

Man had such high hopes for Blake Swihart

5

u/withmuchtolearn 2d ago

A real who's-who of Who?

3

u/AADPS 1d ago

Nah, there's more than just first basemen on there.

2

u/withmuchtolearn 1d ago

That's fair, now that I squint I do see What, Why and How

6

u/Tough-Celebration-21 1d ago

Goes to show prospects don't mean a whole lot, some of these guys turned out great, but most of them were okay or disappeared off the face of the planet.

5

u/Sad_Ambassador4096 1d ago

Deciding what to consider Mayer is weird. He was actually still a really good 1st round pick, because he turned into a top prospect with tons of value. He's more of a failed prospect because the team failed to turn that top prospect capital into anything useful

12

u/ZroDgsCalvin 2d ago

Prospect huggers, avert your eyes

3

u/retannevs1 2d ago

Ah but our 2nd and 3rd rounds are top notch!

9

u/ipsumdeiamoamasamat 2d ago

In all seriousness I thought they did well when they picked Delcarmen in the second round (2000).

4

u/ipsumdeiamoamasamat 2d ago

In all seriousness I thought they did good when they picked Delcarmen in the second round.

3

u/wxysm 2d ago

I’d love to see other teams first rounders to compare but this is atrocious

3

u/Accurate-Client-1479 2d ago

Blake Swihart 😟

5

u/Calm-Helicopter-1237 2d ago

Rays 1

11

u/Calm-Helicopter-1237 2d ago edited 2d ago

Rays 2

I mean, they’re a really good drafting team and there’s a lot of misses. This isn’t the dunk you think

-1

u/OneMoreAcc0unt 2d ago

Way more hits though.

8

u/RaymondSpaget 2d ago

The Rays had SEVEN top three picks in that time. That, y'know, makes it much easier to hit on a winner.

2

u/Hombre-Delfin8533 2d ago

Blake Swihart was the most jerked off prospect ever. Dudes balls hadn’t dropped and every Red sox fan was calling him the Next Bench

2

u/7Streetfreak6 Roman Anthony is made of glass 1d ago

Some tough choices 🗑️

2

u/Perseverance792 1d ago

Well 2023 and 2024 brought us Crochet so I guess there's that

4

u/friz_CHAMP Fire Sam Kennedy 2d ago

Imagine being Jake Schaffner and seeing this list knowing you'll amount to almost nothing in MLB.

4

u/RaymondSpaget 2d ago

The most distinguished 20th-overall picks of this century are Denard Span and Tyler Anderson. He's not got much competition.

2

u/friz_CHAMP Fire Sam Kennedy 2d ago

At least he'll have plenty of company (and money)

2

u/KimJongRocketMan69 Benny Biceps 2d ago

But you will make it to MLB

3

u/GrooveHammock 2d ago

Kyle Teel is awesome

4

u/dc8291 2d ago

Remarkably bad run

3

u/Firecracker048 2d ago

I miss Daniel Bard

4

u/jmcavoy1 2d ago

Aaron Judge was available when the Sox selected Trey Ball. 😫

3

u/RaymondSpaget 2d ago

Judge wasn't even the Yankees's first pick in that draft. He wasn't highly-regarded.

1

u/jmcavoy1 1d ago

He wasn't highly regarded? He was a first round pick!

1

u/Technical_Stand9939 1d ago

I was high on him really early- but when drafted the talk was like a 30% chance of being Richie Sexson- and most likely a bust like so many tall power hitters (that is a profile with an absolute ton of bust).

1

u/jmcavoy1 1d ago

Richie Sexson, The Legend of Brush Prairie!

Not gonna lie, I love if 30% of my 1st round picks turned out as good as Richie Sexson.

3

u/HuskyTheHarvey 1d ago

Matt barnes had a solid 14 year career, won a championship, and averaged 10 points a game.
Can’t hate that pick.

Oh… that Matt Barnes

2

u/Fun_Debt2212 2d ago

Remember when we were excited about Campbell, Mayer and Anthony?

3

u/Ok_Hurry_8728 2d ago

Yup. Still some Roman fanboys out there, but hard to find too many proud Mayer hypers now.

You can identify them by their silent downvotes. They’re not pissed at him for sucking—they’re pissed that the doubters they mocked were actually right. 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Minute-Marketing7434 1d ago

i hope he gets it together. his fielding looked so smooth.

1

u/Technical_Stand9939 1d ago

Marcelo was traded. I still think there is a 20/20 corner OF there, but chances are now pretty low.

Campbell could have been big at 2b, the issue is the offense stinks if he plays corner OF.

I still beleive in Roman being a 30/30 guy someday

2

u/Godiverson3 2d ago

Whole lot of dogshit

1

u/morey56 1d ago

Who aRe these guys?

1

u/Embarrassed_Key_1406 1d ago

Man michael chavis was a dog

1

u/The_Stein244 1d ago

Only 3 top 10 picks too. Probably pretty normal right?

1

u/ScoresGalore 1d ago

The first round pick isnt necessarily the best player picked in the draft anymore.

2020 was a bust with Nick Yorke. 2021 was a bust with Marcelo Mayer. Many would argue that he has the talent if took the game more seriously. In 2022, Mikey Romero was first round pick but Roman Anthony was the player the team invested in the most, giving more money to him at 2.5 million over the 2.3 million given to Romero which is much less significant ghen the 6.6 million given to Mayer. Teel was a good pick, traded in the package for Crochet. 4 million bonus. The next year's first rounder was Montgomery who hasnt impressed much in his rookie year. Witherspoon was next and traded for Adley Rutschman. Red Sox in this years draft gave equal money to first round pick Jake Schaffner and Jace Mataczynski, of 2 million a piece. So I kinda consider Roman Anthony and Jace Mataczynski unofficial first round draft picks based on $ invested.

1

u/classically_cool 1d ago

Trey Ball is gonna come good guys, trust me

1

u/RaisingFargo 1d ago

I have a feeling this is actually way better than some may think.

So many of these guys played in the MLB which is a massive feat.

what % of 1st rd picks make it into the MLB

1

u/andycannolis 1d ago

Casey Kelly made a pretty impressive career for himself in the KBO and even had a brief comeback with the Reds I think

1

u/AnnualFilm 1d ago

So 4 of those 1st rounders have actually done something professionally. I’m being somewhat generous to Benny Biceps

1

u/Dynamite_401 1d ago

This worked out well for Chicago

1

u/MagnetFisherJimmy 1d ago

Micheal Chavis the legend 💪

u/TigoOver Tony Tony's kid supporter 🤌 22h ago

I can admit I don't follow the MLB draft process but a SS? Would a LF, 2B or even 1B be a more concerning need? Story now and then Arias seems to be the future so why that pick? Do they think he can/does Jake also play those IF positions?

1

u/SempreVeritas7468 16h ago

Casas was a third baseman he can’t even play first without an ambulance on site

1

u/Lazenby22 3h ago

Daniel Bard was 20 years ago?!?!!!

-2

u/Drawing_The_Line 2d ago

Better off doing the Felger & Mazz throwing a marker at a draft magazine and drafting that way. This level of ineptitude is really something.

2

u/Minute-Marketing7434 1d ago

it does make u winder why an org would pay so much for scouting. when you could just watch some ncaa baseball these days and pick them.

-4

u/Dseltzer1313 2d ago

This tells me the Sox have not drafted a great or even a very good player (Matt Barnes?) in the first round this century

11

u/EJplaystheBlues 2d ago

His peak wasn’t long but Ellsbury was 2nd in MVP voting in 2011, behind Verlander who pitched a 24-5 2.40 ERA season

1

Ellsbury was great for the Sox and for America when he stole a taco for everyone in the World Series
