Writing October/Halloween Scary Story Contest 2026!
Hi everyone I think we should have a scary story contest. I suggested something like this last year and then didn't follow through but I am a different person now, I'm a woman of her word.
This is what I suggest, everyone leave a scary story here. It must read as true, something that happened to you or that you've heard second hand from a friend or family member. No sneaking in politics or other "topical" conversations. Then I can set up a poll for the top 10 or 20 most upvoted ones, I'll even send a prize if that's not in itself too weird and creepy.
Mods let me know if that's ok and if you'd rather run it than some rando who couldn't follow through on her ideas as recently as last October. But if this is cool with everyone let's do it!!!

things people are doing now that they aren't before that I hate #noticing
- Putting the "after" photo on the left, or in the first image and the "before" on the right. Apparently because they select them by the order the pictures appear in their photo album. How retarded can you fucking get? Pisses me off. Did you get fatter or skinnier? Uglier or hotter? Don't make me fucking guess.
- Most major style guides like Chicago, MLA, APA do not use spaces around em dashs, I don't know why LLMs loves to add spaces around them, everyone seems to have forgotten the convention.
- LLMs also love to add spaces around "/" Why? Who knows? I'm already disregarding your opinion.
- There's also a whole class of mass psychosis grammar/vocab errors solely proliferating because of internet and typing (apart of/a part of, peak/peek, payed/paid, could of/could have, weary/wary, queue/cue, bare/bear)
- The whole POV misuse thing
Please share more examples.

I have no aspirations beyond living like a Murakami character
Having a meaningful tangible job like teaching, living in a small but nice apartment in a city, being in love, having sex, swimming in the sea, going to the cinema, drinking beer, taking trains, listening to and playing music, cooking, reading, not owning much
This is already pretty much how I live (although I want to move cities) and my family is bemused that I don’t want to climb the corporate ladder because I have impressive qualifications, but I don’t know why I would want more than this

Sub's dead
I spoke against this alarmism for all my 5 years here, because for all its faults it was still the best place in the internet. But now it's oficially indistinguishible from r/all, chapo, instagram reels and tik tok comment sections.
Both the dirtbag left and the tradcath right arms of the sub are dead, as in actively get downvoted, and so do the bohemians, the arthousers, the pseuds, and the productive rivalry between those who agreed with the early pod and those who agreed with the late pod. It's been completely replaced by default midwitted airheadism, confidently circlejerking over imbecilities contrary to ANY possible twisting of the original spirit of the sub. I can't even really describe what redscare is "about" now.
I blame the reddit avatars, the banned rival subs' BARBARIAN refugees, the videogame and porn sub followers, the genderslop posts, A+D for abdicating of anything original to say so that they can appease the most basic of MAGA thielbucks, and the countercyclical reddit libs who colonized the power vacuum.
Redscarepod is dead, long live redscarepod...

for all the hate cluster Bs get, they have so much tenacity
rolling stones who gather no moss, the energy it takes to suck the life out of people, ruin every community they enter, then move on like it’s nothing, and truly believe themselves to be the victim? find a whole new group of people to do it again with, maybe get rejected this time around, delete all of their social media, rinse repeat, rinse repeat. no whisper network to ever be established.
i’ve never met a cluster b who didn’t get everything they wanted in life. they never tire of meeting more people. they will keep going. they’ll will their victims into giving them everything they want and will further abuse them if the answer is no, or if anyone dares to put down a boundary. nothing keeps them down. they feel no guilt for anything they’ve done. it’s a genuine super power. what is the actual downside of having NPD/BPD? there’s no such thing as karma. pathological lying, nuking any event that isn’t about them, triangulation. no ability to take any accountability. they lash out, make people believe their insanely disproportionate reaction is their fault, then it’s only after when holding court with the other people they’ve fucked over do you realize they have such a low tolerance for anything that pokes at their lack of personhood. they export all that shame and self hatred onto others, while they stay totally clean and just move on with life.
seriously, what is the actual downside to a cluster b personality disorder? these people are infallible.
i went to a high school where some of my friends were later diagnosed with bpd when we reached our late teens/ early 20s, got help, and went into remission. even in remission, they can still be so demanding and triggered by something as small as changing dinner plans. but i’m talking about those who won’t even admit there’s a problem to be addressed because they have yet to hit a wall.

Are most people just not attracted to the person they are dating?
Potentially exposing my ass here but I feel like I only meet somebody who is my type and available (in the sense that they are in my social sphere and single, not that they will even go out with me) once every couple years. Needless to say my love life is not very active. Thankfully I'm not the type to string along people I'm not into but it does get lonely at times. I feel like other people I know get into relationships vastly more often than I with a, lets just say wide, variety of types. I know that if it were me, like 90% of relationships I've seen, successful and non, wouldn't get off the ground in the first place.
It does make me wonder what level of desire they experience for their partners. Like when you see a gorgeous woman with one of those mustache mullet guys or an athlete with somebody who looks like they don't even walk on the treadmill twice a week. Obviously personality matters too but I can't help but feel if I'm to enter into something so based on cooperation, compromise, and opening my life to another it's something that requires a passionate level of raw desire from me. Like, I need whoever I'm with to be a muse to want to move on it.

Is anyone else becoming a “Karen” because of how extremely expensive and poor standard everything is?
I used to be like “whatever!” when my coffee order was messed up, but now that it’s $7.80 for a regular flat white, it’s become a luxury, so I find myself sending it back if it’s not correct.
I used to not care if something was missing from a dish that I ordered, or it was entirely incorrect and I would be like okay this looks good anyway I’ll eat it! , but now everything is so expensive and done with such little care that I will say “this is missing the mushrooms that I ordered”..
And it extends to everything. I won’t get started on my recent experience booking an international business class airline ticket because it would sound pretentious but you pay these stupid companies shit tonnes of money and they can’t do a single thing right, and they treat you like dirt.
I know this is a first world problem obviously but it feels like you now have to push people to do things when you’ve paid them an exorbitant amount to do it.

i did molly with shrooms this weekend at a festival and i am dramatically more confident in myself
i decided to roll on molly for a music festival this weekend and figured it take some (not a lot) of shrooms as well. had a fucking blast but what is sticking with me is how fresh everything feels. didn’t have a nasty depressive comedown or a bad roll thankfully. it must be the cumulative high of everyone at the festival, but i felt a gravity towards me as in everyone wanted to talk or flirt with me.
first day back at work and everything i say is just rolling of the tongue like natural, things i normally see on my commute seem familiar but new, and i am significantly more confident. killed all my client meetings today and seriously hit it off with my work crush today. how can i build off this

People are genuinely surprised when I tell them about living in africa
one thing i've noticed is how surprised people are when i talk about my life in nairobi. i think there's this image of africa that makes it difficult to imagine people there having similar mundane experiences. now i'm not gonna pretend this is the average experience for most africans, because it obviously isn't. but i think people underestimate just how familiar life can be in certain parts of the continent, especially in major cities.
when i attended college there for a year, i was friends with this guy who got ruined by an art hoe. i met her a few times and she was very gorgeous. she had this alt, erykah badu like feel but something about her eyes made me feel like there was something deeply wrong with her.
his friends had been warning him about her from the beginning, but he kept insisting that they didnt know her. within a few months he was skipping lectures and constantly dealing with some new crisis involving her. apparently she had lupus, and often enough when he disagreed with her or tried to stand up for himself, she'd conveniently have a flare up and he'd have to drop everything to take care of her.
the timing got so ridiculous that we started wondering whether she even had lupus, but he thought we were being cruel for questioning her illness. by the time they broke up (she dumped him over text), he'd basically sacrificed an entire semester to her whims.
i guess it's funny how you can be halfway across the world and still encounter the exact same species of people.

We do things a little differently here. We serve family-style tapas, and we recommend ordering 3-4 items per person and sharing everything.
Each item is $23-$65 and is tiny. Every dish is served on the littlest plate you’ve ever seen in your life and there will be an odd number of pieces so you’re forced to either order another or have one person get an extra or one less than everyone else. Bread costs $12 and does not come with butter. You can also order a mocktail for $18. Yes that’s right a MOCKtail. It’s just juice. The person in your party who is very proud of themselves for cutting down on drinking will order five of these and then ask everyone to split the check.

Are these the two greatest pseuds of the British 21st century?
The British ‘intelligentsia’ are obsessed with being “objective” but it’s almost always just pulling stuff out of their ass, “muh camebridge” “me mum n dad’s values”. These two are the biggest examples, British radio must hire based purely on smugness levels.
I thought oh this lermode guy is a respected cinephile, let’s see what he has to say on Digger and what a pseud, I don’t give a shit if he has the Gang of Four album sitting above his big head. “This film is objectively a mess” and “eyes wide shut is objectively a mess”, according to who, the British film institute? “Oh it’s trying to be a masterpiece like Strangelove”, what a boomer, thank god we had political critiques like strangelove that actually saved us from ever being led be right wing warhawks ever again!
And what is with movie critics that can’t get their heads around meta shit, “it’s meta, it’s postmodern, the director has used this to prevent anyone critiquing their film” because the Oscar winning director can only make a shit film and needs to add an entire meta narrative to get ahead of the critics.
And the other guy is just the politics version of this, propah midwits. God save the king

Young adults aren't treated like adults, especially in the workplace
Something I've noticed as an ex-young person, working with young people. They are spared more responsibilities (aka moving up, developing experience) because it's assumed 'they're not ready' so they stay on the bottom way WAY longer than necessary. Often the people in the workplace who are meant to be role models and teachers are too overworked or selfish to care. When it comes to corrective action, they're spoken to in a very calculated way, so as not to come off as 'mean' (which okay honestly they all kinda think that everything is mean). On the rare chance that they are given more responsibilities, their lack of experience is often just taken advantage of and abused by horrible lazy managers, they get overworked with no support, and they take it because they don't know any better, then burn out and become jaded for the rest of their working existence. What I'm saying is they are never treated as respectable, decent workers with dignity. Their malleability is no longer seen as an asset, but a burden, or something to use against them. I wonder if it was different in the past.
