I work as a graphics designer on a graphics-heavy TV show, so print quality and reliability is very important to me. I find myself in a bit of a bind.
Two months ago my three-year-old Epson SC-P900 stopped working. Paper started getting jammed with every print job and the machine would make a loud, gear-jam gear noise whenever we tried to print. Epson wasn't able to help troubleshoot over the phone and because it was beyond the warranty period, I decided to buy a new Canon Image Prograf Pro 1100 in August.
Canon was great at first, but about a month in it started banding on dark color-dense images. Sometimes the banding is faint, others much more stark, but it is often there. I called Canon a dozen times and after many printhead cleanings, nozzle checks and printhead alignments, eventually they sent me a new Pro 1100 at the end of September. I'm wondering if others agree that Canon Customer Support is generally much better than Epson's.
At the beginning of this week my less-than-two-week-old Pro 1100 started banding AGAIN. After after calling Canon, the nozzle checks won't print with totally solid black bars, so they are sending me ANOTHER unit of this $1,400 printer. They don't really seem to have an answer as to why this keeps happening. While I'm grateful that they are so willing to send out a new unit to fix my problem, setting up this new heavy printer is a pain, I still have to ship back the old one, and I'd rather have a printer that just works.
I'm thinking about returning the Prograf Pro 1100 and going back on the market for a new printer. Seeing as how finicky these machines can be, both Epson and Canon, customer support is important to me. Is it the general consensus that Canon has better customer support?
TLDR: My Epson and Canon $1,500 printers have both broken. What would be your next move in my position? What have others' experiences with both Epson and Canon printers at the $1,500-2k range been? Can you recommend other printers at this calibre that you have loved and have worked, or at least been covered by warranty, for a good long time? Any advice or insight would be appreciated!
