This will be a living/breathing section of the wiki, featuring posts and comments that dive a little deeper into the cyanotype process by your community members. This can help provide inspiration or answers that other users may find helpful.

Thank you for stopping by.

Feel free to leave a comment down below if there's something you'd like to see added to the wiki, or any feedback you may have.

All the best.

About a month ago, I posted a photo of this after I’d rinsed it. (From a personal account, not this one).
It got a lot of love and a few people encouraging me to make prints. Well, I did, and just launched my website this week.
I’ve sold the original and a few others already, and some prints.
Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that encouraged me! ❤️❤️❤️

(And if anyone would like to see my other work, the link is in my bio)

These were all made from a sympathy bouquet for my father's death. I used Jacquard chemistry on Jack Richeson watercolor postcards.

Displaying artwork in nursery?

Post image
104 Upvotes

My husband and I made these space-themed cyanotypes for our son's nursery (we are excited first time parents!)

I am wondering if folks have suggestions for how to hang them on the wall to minimize sun damage? They're fabric, and I wanted to keep that visible, meaning no bulky framing. So I was planning to just pin the cyanotypes to the wall, but now I’m worried about them fading with daily sun exposure. There’s daily light in the room, but the wall we would hang artwork on does not get much bright, direct sunlight.

Any suggestions? Thank you!!

It was fun! I used some coffee! I plan to try with some other tannins and see what happens. I’m excited to try it with some proper photos, it’s been so rainy this week I haven’t had a chance to expose any lol!

Forsyth Park on Kodak photo paper.

Still don’t know how I feel about this medium, sometimes it comes out super clear & sometimes it doesn’t. Also I realized, this medium requires hydrogen peroxide to develope a clearer picture, & you need to rub out the blue pigment physically with your hands for a better result.

Overall though, photo paper seems to be an easy & forgiving medium for cyanotypes

First time printing cyanotypes, problems

Hey, so im using a 2.5W UV light to print 6x9, medium format photographic negatives, I have tried exposures from 8 minutes to 60 minutes, on the edges outside of the negative I obtain a nice blue color, at 30 and 60 minutes the images were visible (faint but visible), especially good on 60 minutes, but when I washed with cold water the image dissapeared and the whole negative turned white.

As far as I know my chemical mixing should be fine, and exposure times should´ve been enough. Any clue on what could be happening? P.S Im using a good negative with enough contrast.

Some experiments with cyanotypes

This is my second time making cyanotypes and I wanted to experiment with some different techniques. The first time I used transparency film, which was cool, but I wanted to do something more hands-on. I tried splattering, dripping, and toning to get some interesting effects. I also played around with using an electric typewriter to see how it would look.

For toning, I bleached the print in a solution of 1L water and 2tsp baking soda for 10 minutes and then soaked it in 1L of black tea (steeped with 3 teabags for 10 minutes) mixed with 100mL of red wine. First time toning a print and I’m very pleased with the color.

Digitizing Cyanotypes

Hi - Has anyone tried to digitize their cyanotypes? I'm particularly interested in toned prints where the general whiteness of the paper has also toned/discolored and how you deal with that when scanning in.

I'd think like digitizing other pieces of art, you would scan and maybe pick everything off of the white background to reproduce on other white papers, but when the toning and the general white of the paper is off, how do you cater for that?

Any info or processes would be great. Thanks!

I want to submit this photo to a local magazine. It’s not perfect and I can’t make it again. What do you guys think of it? Here is the prompt for the magazine:

“imagining Arkansas’s future, particularly how our world might change through technological advancement, political decisions, and ecological destruction—and what possibilities we have for shaping that future.”

The bottle used is Mountain Valley water which is from Arkansas. I shattered the bottle then wanted the flowers emerging from it. I’m touching on the ecological destruction part

First time trying cyanotype--what a fun art form!

I've been thinking about doing this since my sister got married a few months ago--I pressed some of the flowers from their bouquet and arrangements and was planning to make a cyanotype for them as a Christmas present, but hadn't gotten around to it until I realized we're in October and the sunlight is waning!

Had to guess at exposure times particularly since the plants were all different opacities--I think the translucent flowers are my favorite to expose at this point given how "X-ray like" they look.

What botanicals do you like to capture?
