Baby Names Is Spruce actually doable and cute or am I just hormonally crazy right now?

Just found out we’re expecting a baby boy!

My husband and were talking about nature-based baby names years ago and we joked about the name Spruce. Then we kind of went silent and thought, wait, that kind of is super cute. Then we’re like no it’s too much. But also it slaps. But also weird.

Now that I found out we’re having a boy, I’m like… is this actually a doable name or is it too off the rails? Like I genuinely think it’s actually super cute. But I don’t want to give my son a name that people will side eye for the rest of his life. We tend to like less common names, but the fact that this one isn’t even ranked in Canada means it’s incredibly obscure and maybe weird. But I think I actually love it.

So, logical people of reddit: do I have wild pregnancy brain or is Spruce actually doable for a real kid? I legit can’t tell right now.

I was thinking of a female Elven name for a character in a Medieval-fantasy kind of setting.

Which of the 2 names do you like more?

Discussion Is Dio a bad nickname

My little siblings and cousins call me this because they cant pronounce my real name, as they got older it stuck for them, (A Hispanic name). And its like 50/50 if people actually hear or say my name correctly. I've never had a nickname so was wondering if Dio would be a good or bad name; considering the religious connection.

Baby Names Nicknaming our son TJ if his full name is Anthony James

Title correction: Sorry, not full name, I meant his first two given names.

Since Tony is a common nickname for Anthony, I figured Tony James = TJ. Does that seem reasonable, or am I reaching?

Really liking the name Anthony James for our son, I would like the option for an initial-style nickname but I'm not a fan of AJ as a nickname. I much prefer TJ/TJay.

I'm actually working a little backwards here because I love the nickname TJ, but haven't found any T names I really like. He will have two older sisters.

Update: Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts! It seems to be a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it idea. Or a you do you kind of thing... Given our already tricky surname, we feel after receiving this feedback that it adds an unnecessary layer of complexity, so we've decided to rule it out for now which is great, gets us closer to the name we love. Thanks again for your help!

Non-English Names Is Min a dated name to you?

Sometimes it seems like every other Chinese woman I've met born in the 80s and 90s was named either Shu Min 淑敏 or Hui Min 慧敏! So, does 敏 feel tired today? What are combos that might sound more modern?

Baby Names Please help me love the name Francis again

My son is due this week and I'm starting to get cold feet about the name we've chosen, Francis. It's a family name so I'm very committed to using it, but I'm just really not loving it right now. I think hearing what other people like about the name could potentially help.

This is my third child and I had a very hard time naming my second child, so this isn't a new phenomenon and it's probably somewhat hormonal.

Sib set will be:
Julian
Naomi
Francis (nn Frankie possibly)

Discussion Moon as a baby name

I’m not actually considering naming a baby moon! just curious what you guys think of it? I was scrolling through a list of names on behind the name rated as very good by users and was quite surprised to see this name turn up in it! so I’m wondering how many of you think it would be suitable as a name, and if so what gender? personally I think of it as a word and not as a name, but to each their own

hopefully this doesn’t come across as a hate thread? I’m really trying not to come across like I’m bashing the name

Baby Names How is "Clemens" perceived in the DACH-region/Europe? Thoughts on August, Georg, Anton and Maximilian too!

  1. What associations do you have with Clemens? Does it feel classic and elegant, refined/upscale, or something else? We’re hoping for a name that feels timeless/classy. Does the name have a strong catholic association and would be weird if a non-catholic family chooses this name?

  2. Would you choose Clemens over Maximilian, August, Theodor, Anton, Georg, Johann, Henri, Julius, Albert or Leonhard/Leonard? Which would you pick, and why? Which feels the most refined to you?

  3. For Georg, how much of an issue do you think pronunciation would be internationally? We’d use the German pronunciation, but I imagine many English speakers would say “George.” Would that bother you, particularly for a child growing up in an international setting? How is the name perceived?

  4. What’s your impression of August? Is “der dumme August” still a strong association? Does sharing its spelling with the month cause any confusion, or is that a nonissue? What's the perception of the name?

  5. Does Maximilian still feel elegant and refined, or has it become so familiar that it feels a little too ordinary? What would be some alternative names to Maximilian?

  6. Does Anton feel charming and timeless to you, or a little too simple?

  7. What do you think about the name Henri? Is it perceived as too modern/French, and not?

  8. How do the names Julius and Albert come across?

  9. Do you have any other name suggestions that are timeless and classy?

  10. Also if you have any thoughts on the following names, I would very much appreciate it: Oscar, Otto, Emil, Gustav.

For English speakers: How does Clemens strike you as a boy’s first name? Does it feel natural, or do you primarily associate it with a surname? Does it remind you of Clementine, or does it feel distinctly masculine?

Please mention where you’re from so I can put your impressions in context. Thanks so much! :)

Baby Names Could use some input regarding the name Stevie for a girl!

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I’m still in the first trimester, so we actually don’t know the gender of our baby just yet- just a strong feeling it would be a girl. There’s a bit of backstory that goes into why I could use the input.

Our first daughter is named Salem Stephanie (last name). My mother-in-law who has passed, was named Stephanie, and when deciding gurl names- Salem Stephanie came to us in an instant. We never wavered, and we love her name! This time around, we came up with a boy name instantly, but haven’t necessarily chosen a girl’s name. Her father and I have different tastes. The only name we 100% agree on would be Stevie. I’ve seen a lot of people mention, even specifically in this sub that Stephanie is an easier substitute for the name, but we obviously have used the name. I’d like a name with a similar witchy vibe to Salem- and something that flows with her name too, if possible!

All that background info aside, do you think Stevie is a fitting name for our family? If you have different suggestions, I’m open! Nothing has been an instant yes for us yet. I would probably do Stevie Jean, which was my grandmother’s middle name.

Some other names we are considering, but aren’t sure about:
Daphne
Frankie
Drew (my choice, my partner doesn’t love this one)
Dolly (my partner chose the name)

Thanks for the input, please be kind!

Baby Names Looking for a name for our 2nd girl that pairs well with our first daughter’s name!

We have a 14 month old named Violet James (my husbands middle name) and I absolutely love her name. I want something soft, feminine, but may be a little unexpected. (No Ellie’s or Eleanor’s or Olivia’s or anything like that)

We just found out we’re having another girl today due in April!

Unfortunately, some of the names that I like seem really close to Violet (example: Violet and Lisette or Violet and Colette both have the hard “-let” ending).

So far on my list I have:
Lettie
June / Junie
Georgia or Georgina
Josephine nn Josie

I’m curious if all your name gurus out there have some suggestions that would work well with our daughter’s name without having such a similar ending! Thanks in advance!

Baby Names Margaret with nickname Daisy?

I’m like 3 seconds pregnant with my second and can’t stop thinking about baby names already. I have a daughter named Claire, and was thinking about naming #2 Margaret if it’s a girl with the nickname Daisy. So my questions are:

Do Claire & Margaret/Claire & Daisy flow together as a sibling set?

Will people understand the Margaret/Daisy nickname? I know Daisy is a traditional nickname for Margaret but will other people get it or will she be set up for people asking questions about it forever?

Margaret was my late mother in law’s name and I thought it would be nice to incorporate her name in some way if we have a girl.

Baby Names Figuring out the nickname "Lou"

My husband and I are expecting our first baby (yay!) and he has always loved the nickname "Lou" for a girl - and I really agree! I also really love French names. Initially he had suggested the name Louise, and I wanted to go with Eloise instead because I liked how it sounded better. However, I am concerned that 1) people may have an issue with the spelling, and 2) it will be too much of a stretch to have the nickname "Lou" as I feel people will naturally use "Ellie" for Eloise. So now back to the drawing board.

I am looking for opinions on which of these three names you prefer: Louise, Eloise, and Louisa.
I am also open to suggestions on middle names (because we have NO idea!!!)

Thanks! ❤️

Baby Names Thoughts on name April?

Hi everyone, I’d love some outside perspective on the name we have chosen (please be kind because I am really pregnant and hormonal 😂)

Even before I was pregnant, I was in love with the name April. It feels so classic and feminine, and it sounds lovely with my firstborns name.
We’ve been calling my bump April like it's already her name, and I felt really settled on it.

Recently, though, I'm starting to doubt myself because my husband casually joked she would get called "Ape" as a nickname. Now I'm really spiralling she'll get teased or bullied with that in school.

Has anyone used this name, or know an April, wee have any thoughts on the teasing potential? Am I overthinking it because of hormones, or is that nickname something I should worry about?

Thanks in advance! 💛

P.S. It hadn’t even crossed my mind to worry about whether she'll be born in April until I searched the name on this subreddit and saw people talking about it! Should I actually be worried about her birth month not aligning? I never even considered it as a calendar month—I just think it’s such a beautiful name. Due in January!

Baby Names Girl or neutral names that mean strong or determined

Hi!
I am pregnant after several losses and this is a very high risk, miserable, difficult pregnancy but this girl is sticking around somehow despite it all 💗

I’m looking for a name that means stubborn, strong, determined, fated, resilient or something in that vein. She still has a long way to go but I want to start calling her something so she knows she can stay and fight & we can win this.

I have a daughter named Marlowe. I know Marlowe is a controversial choice here but I love it and it’s so her. I’m open to more gender neutral type names too!

Thank you in advance for your help- I love all the beautiful, creative and meaningful names I see you all come up with on this sub.
