Fun and Games You have to name your daughter after a precious stone- i.e. Crystal, Amber, Ruby, Pearl, Jewel, Jade, Opal, Beryl, Amethyst, Gem, Esmeralda, etc. etc. What name are you picking?

Names don't necessarily need be in English, as per "Esmeralda" rather than "Emerald" in the title! If you like Amatista more than Amethyst, for example, please say so!

Baby Names Please help me love the name Francis again

My son is due this week and I'm starting to get cold feet about the name we've chosen, Francis. It's a family name so I'm very committed to using it, but I'm just really not loving it right now. I think hearing what other people like about the name could potentially help.

This is my third child and I had a very hard time naming my second child, so this isn't a new phenomenon and it's probably somewhat hormonal.

Sib set will be:
Julian
Naomi
Francis (nn Frankie possibly)

Baby Names Thoughts on name April?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’d love some outside perspective on the name we have chosen (please be kind because I am really pregnant and hormonal 😂)

Even before I was pregnant, I was in love with the name April. It feels so classic and feminine, and it sounds lovely with my firstborns name.
We’ve been calling my bump April like it's already her name, and I felt really settled on it.

Recently, though, I'm starting to doubt myself because my husband casually joked she would get called "Ape" as a nickname. Now I'm really spiralling she'll get teased or bullied with that in school.

Has anyone used this name, or know an April, wee have any thoughts on the teasing potential? Am I overthinking it because of hormones, or is that nickname something I should worry about?

Thanks in advance! 💛

P.S. It hadn’t even crossed my mind to worry about whether she'll be born in April until I searched the name on this subreddit and saw people talking about it! Should I actually be worried about her birth month not aligning? I never even considered it as a calendar month—I just think it’s such a beautiful name. Due in January!

Discussion Sibling names!!

• Upvotes

If you have children with names that wouldn’t necessarily be deemed “cohesive” or if you are apart of a sibling set that doesn’t follow a specific vibe or theme, I would love to know what the names are. I think it’s so fun when there is a bit of a mishmash of styles.

Baby Names JMB - I like the family tradition but don't have a name that works

TL;DR: were looking for "J" names to fit a family tradition but are open to other options. We plan to use a nickname and like ones that end in an -ie sound.

So I just had a baby girl (yay!) and her mother and I can't figure out a name we both like. Hoping that some outside brainpower injects some new ideas.

Any input is appreciated but for context here's what we've talked about

Approach 1: My family has a (short) tradition of naming girls in the family so that they have the initials JMB. For the middle name we like Margret or Mara, the last name is set, but the first name we haven't been able to figure out.

I like Joan (vetoed: racist aunt), Juno/Juneau (vetoed: Micheal Cera movie), and Jessica (vetoed: already someone in the family with the name). I kinda like Juniper, but as stated in the sub post about overly used names, it feels a little to "crunchy" and worn out. I just don't think I can name my kid after a berry.

My wife likes Juliet (I like this name in a vacuum but I'm not a fan of Romeo and Juliet, not do I want to drawn a ton of attention to her when her class inevitably covers the play) and Jamie (I don't like unisex names, and I while we'll definitely give her a nickname I don't want her given name to be a nickname).

Jaden/Jadyn is one we both kinda like but aren't convinced on. For me it's a little to unisex, my wife is mostly happily with it but has a lot of other preferred names. Jane is also in the running but we can't come up with a good nickname and it might be a little "to plain"(?). Hard to nail down why this one doesn't work, but we are both a little uncertain with it. Jennifer is a name we both like in a vacuum but feel like it is over used in our generation.

Approach 2: Scrap the family thing and just give her a name that doesn't fit that system. This one is all on me, I'm overly sentimental and a fan of history/connections so I have a hard time giving up the family thing.

That said, we like Katherine (but not the nicknames that go with it like Kat and Kate, Katie is our favorite of the bunch), Andrea (and-rea-uh: we like the meaning Strong/Brave but have a hard time coming up with nicknames for this, and are unsure if the pronunciation sits right), Veronica (we like nicknames that end with the -ie sound but Roni is an exception).

Approach 2.1(?): Moon themed?

Not sure why this is so interesting to us, were not really into nature names but lunar themed names have both been a little bit of a hit. We like Luna but feel it's a little to crunchy/plain, I do like the nickname Lu or Lulu though. We were also thinking about Sena/Selina/Seluna, but feel like it's to close to Seline (vetoed). Maybe we just need convincing.

¯\(ツ)/¯

Sorry for the wall of text.

Name Change Can't believe i'm asking this: What do I change my first name to between two choices?

I'm finally 18 years old. I've carried around my deadbeat father who I've never met's last name. I want my mom's last name, that's easy. But, i'm half japanese half filipino, and Masaharu was supposed to be my middle name but my biological deadbeat said no. However, the family I grew up with is Japanese and i've always been called that. My mom is a 1st generation, she speaks Japanese and English very well, I love my mom. My current name is Gavin. Of course, I live in America so Gavin is a lot easier to pronounce than Masaharu. Online, I've always been known as Masaharu.

Obviously, Masaharu fits a Japanese last name more than Gavin but it really comes down to my real life friends call me Gavin but they know I also go by Masaharu. So it's either Masaharu as my first name or Gavin as my first name and then my middle name being the other. I'm really conflicted. Like, really. Please help.

Baby Names Persian American girl name

I’m expecting my baby girl soon and would love to have a Persian first name for her since my husband is Persian. I’ve been looking for names that start with A (because her first name in my language starts with A), have 3 syllables with a melodic flow, and write / sound a bit American. We love the name Aria but it got vetoed by my in laws (reason: that’s basically naming your child white people). Apart from Aria, we really like Amira but my in laws don’t like it because it’s more Arabic than Persian.

We’ve gone through so many rounds of name choosing but couldn’t find anything that quite fits our preferences and has Persian roots. Some that we like but not love right now are: Adrina, Avina & Armina. I would really love some more suggestions because it’s been so hard trying to pick out a good Persian name when I don’t know that many Persian people or speak Farsi well. Thank you in advance!

Baby Names Baby number 3 inspo

Looking for some inspiration for Baby 3.
Older siblings start with S and F so I will probably stay away from those letters.
I don’t know the gender yet.
The girl names on my mind are:
Eliza
Antonia
Calista
I want the name Poppy as a middle name for sentimental reasons.

For boys, I’m thinking:
Casper
Kit
Ellis

I feel like I need some fresh ideas that fit with this kind of vibe if people would kindly throw their suggestions out there and give their opinions on my lists!

Discussion Is Dio a bad nickname

My little siblings and cousins call me this because they cant pronounce my real name, as they got older it stuck for them, (A Hispanic name). And its like 50/50 if people actually hear or say my name correctly. I've never had a nickname so was wondering if Dio would be a good or bad name; considering the religious connection.

Baby Names How is "Clemens" perceived in the DACH-region/Europe? Thoughts on August, Georg, Anton and Maximilian too!

We’re considering Clemens for our baby boy. We currently live in the US, but he’ll most likely grow up in a major German city. After years abroad, I feel a little out of touch with how names are perceived there, so I’d love some local perspective!

For people in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or elsewhere in Europe:

  1. What associations do you have with Clemens? Does it feel classic and elegant, refined/upscale, or something else? We’re hoping for a name that feels timeless/classy

. Does the name have a strong catholic association and would be weird if a non-catholic family chooses this name?

  1. Would you choose Clemens over Maximilian, August, Theodor, Anton, Georg, Johann, Henri or Leonhard/Leonard? Which would you pick, and why? Which feels the most refined to you?

  2. For Georg, how much of an issue do you think pronunciation would be internationally? We’d use the German pronunciation, but I imagine many English speakers would say “George.” Would that bother you, particularly for a child growing up in an international setting? How is the name perceived?

  3. What’s your impression of August? Is “der dumme August” still a strong association? Does sharing its spelling with the month cause any confusion, or is that a nonissue? What's the perception of the name?

5

What would be alternative names to Maximilian?
6.

  1. Does Anton feel charming and timeless to you, or a little too simple?

7

For English speakers: How does Clemens strike you as a boy’s first name? Does it feel natural, or do you primarily associate it with a surname? Does it remind you of Clementine, or does it feel distinctly masculine?

Please mention where you’re from so I can put your impressions in context. Thanks so much! :)

Discussion Names you see suggested that would not work in your country

Inspired by the prolific suggestions of Simon.

I'm from the UK - some of the names I've seen suggested that would be not work in the UK, mainly due to being very dated:

- Simon

- Roy

- Nigel (Also right wing politician)

- Graham/Graeme

- Gary (!)

- Barry (!!!)

- Paul (my husband is German and I know this is super popular over there, but always makes me laugh when I hear a baby called it).

- Ambrose - I see it suggested a lot but I can't imagine anyone in the UK using it as it's very close to a brand of custard!

I'm struggling with girls names, but I often see quite 90s names suggested - Gemma, Emma, Caroline...not awful but be considered quite of a time.

What names do you see suggested a lot here that would be surprising in your country?

Baby Names Baby girl name help!

• Upvotes

My husband and I are expecting a second baby girl in the spring and are just starting our name search. I tend to like older, classic names and my husband leans trendy. We have one daughter Eloise Josephine (middle name after my grandfather). I would potentially like to give this baby the middle name Frances, but am not dead set on it. Please send me any/all names suggestions!

Baby Names Canadians: I need help “Harper”

Me and my partner are expecting our first child in January 2027 and we love the name “Harper”

but there’s a part of me that thinks some will associate it with former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Am I being irrational here? Any feedback would be great.

Also open to any name suggestions that have a similar feel to Harper.

Other names on our list that we likely won’t use for various reasons were: Astrid, Evelyn, and Genevieve.
