/r/mixedrace — Welcome, and a reminder about rules and moderation

Hello, mixedrace! It's time for a monthly reminder on some admin stuff! First, a big welcome to new people! Please take some time to read through past threads and use the search bar to get a feel for the community. Rules and guidelines (https://www.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/rules) are here. Our wiki (https://old.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/index) is here. And the FAQ (https://www.reddit.com/r/mixedrace/wiki/faq) is here.

Mods would also like to clarify some rules and approaches to problems. This is a diverse community. In a diverse community you will come across people who do not agree with you.

Regarding warnings and bans. We want to encourage the free flow of ideas and conversation rather than coming down heavily on every topic or idea. Free discussion does NOT give users the go-ahead to use derogatory language; pick fights with; or otherwise stir up trouble. Our present stance is to warn the person/delete their posts. If the behavior doesn't stop, we will escalate to a 14-day ban and move from there. Other users do not have to agree with your positions or ideas.

Examples of responses that would be deleted and warned include: - Using a slur, including terms like "half-breed." Name-calling (ie- "Stfu, you're stupid.") - Telling others how to identify (ie- "You can't call yourself mixed because mixed isn't real;" "You're not Asian, stop calling yourself one," etc.) - Using your personal trauma to bully other users

Regarding harassment by PM. Unfortunately we've been alerted to incidents of users harassing others over PM. As mods, we cannot really enforce behavior that happens outside of , so it is best to either either block individual users (https://www.reddit.com/prefs/blocked) or else, in extreme circumstances, escalate to the reddit admins (https://www.reddit.com/report).

Thank you all for helping to make this a great community!

Rant Does anyone else have a problem figuring out their identity?

Im quarter jamaican but my mam is pretty black and i get called lightskin quite often. I always see jokes about mixed people with one race calling them the other and vice versa but its really like that. Its annoying because all my white friends call me black, black people call me lightskin or just mixed. I feel like i dont have a place in either. And my hair doesn’t help either since its a mix of curly and afro.
Essentially if i think im white, white people say im black/mixed. And if i think im black, my percentage throws me off. Since so many people see me in so many ways i dont know how to see myself

Discussion Whenever I'm abroad nobody recognizes me as American

This isn't a rant but it kinda makes me sad almost nobody recognizes me as American whenever I'm abroad. A lot of Americans abroad I notice always seem stuck up or I'm better than you mindset. If not, they give you looks. On the bright side of things, I'm ok with it because I did a good job trying to blend in with locals. As I said it kinda hurts but I don't know. Some people in Europe think I'm Arabic even though I'm mixed with Black, White and Polynesian.

Black+white mixed people, does your white side sometimes randomly “surface”?

Like do you find yourself randomly wanting to go to the country club? eat mayo and bacon sandwiches? putting raisins in potato salad? and if you hear a strange noise in the house, do you find yourself wanting to go towards it instead of running away?

Discussion Whats an acceptable reply to dirty looks and stares?

Mixed guy here, ever since dating a black woman (not mixed, i'm talking pure black), mixed women have been giving my girl dirty looks while they just stare at me doing faces. I try to ignore them but its genuinely weird. I like looking at my surroundings and trying to ignore them, to me, it means putting my head down. Which i dislike and feel uncomfortable. I sometimes feel slightly paranoid because i dont know if thats a girl from my past and shes still angry over some meaningless stuff But i'm also not about to have a verbal discussion with these ladies who I cant tell if they are trying to tell me something or its their natural reaction. Either way it's disgusting and I want a way to let them know I'm happy and confident with my woman and their opinions of us have no affect on us. And I cant do that pretending I dont see them. But like I said, i'm not about to have a discussion with them. I'm after some middle ground here. What do you personally do?

Identity Questions Why can’t I opt out of the concept of ethnicity if I am ethnically ambiguous and live in western country?

Like I’m an Aussie citizen, and look ethnically ambiguous. I’m neurodivergent too and don’t feel belonging to any group. So why should I carry the burden of this ethnicity when it is so meaningless

Rant Why do some ppl think I’m flexing when I talked about being mixed race

It’s so dumb

For context I’m Black+SE Asian

Just cuz I mentioned (for the first time) that I’ve been mistaken countless times by people of different ethnicities from East Africa, to East Asia to South Asia.

Like it’s just a fact, that’s my experience. But I think I look like what I am anyway and I love myself and that made ppl mad for some reason tryna humble me by… telling me what I am? Like no shit, I literally said I think I jus look like what I am

Why the fuck would being mistaken as another ethnicity or race be a flex unless you think those ethnicities are superior to Black or SE Asian ppl? Whatever they just racist or have internalized racism 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Like it the internet it fake anyway but I think there are more ppl who are weird towards mixed ppl more than there are those problematic mixed ppl who just say racist bs and act like they’re better than other ppl 😭 but that’s just how I feel

Rant As a half black women, I feel weight loss made me uglier.

I've posted here lots of times before. Truth it when I was bigger, people treated me better and considered me more feminine looking. My ass and tits were bigger and my face was soft, cute and boneless. My waist was chubby and I had a tummy pouch. I hated myself back then.

I assumed years ago that if I lost weight my body would end up looking like Quenlin Blackwell and Rissa Porter (Lady Picasso) on YouTube as the fat from my waist would be gone and I have wide hip bones. I assumed my face would look snatched to the gods as my jawline used to be buried under a layer of fat and my cheekbones would come out. Now after years of trying and finally learning my own body at 27, I can finally see my ribcage which is wide AF and it makes me look like a rectangle despite my measurements telling me I'm a figure 8 hourglass. My face looks haggard, masculine and older due to my natural bone structure underneath. I have a strong diamond shaped jawline, wide cheekbones from the side but my face is flat in the front. No forehead or brow ridge as a result of Persian heritage, no frontal cheekbones and that weak chin that's common in people of African descent.

I'm healthier and my body feels fit, light and full of energy. Pain in my joints is a thing of the past and I can move and dance for hours, do push up and run for a long time so I don't regret losing weight but... Losing fat has made me less physically attractive. I wish this was a side effect people would talk about more, especially if you've inherited an amalgamation of features from different ethnic groups that may not favour weight loss as well.

Identity Questions Does anyone else relate to simply not knowing their racial heritage?

I've always grown up being told I was or to say I was white by my family, my dad is white and so is that entire half of the family, but my mother is dark and there's some family ambiguity about my real grandfather, as both her parents and siblings are white.

Me and my sister don't look like it either, I have tan skin and dark hair, and constantly people ask where I'm from, what country my family is from, etc. It doesn't especially dwell on my mind a lot - theres more important things to think about - but it'd be nice to know if people out there can relate to this specific experience of feeling like there's just a big gap in their identity and ancestry.

How do I connect to my culture?

I feel so alienated because I was raised by an assimilated mother and a white father. I wasn’t taught to speak Spanish, I wasn’t raised with much cultural influence. My grandma doesn’t like talking about stuff like this and I don’t have a meaningful relationship with my cousins to ask this kind of stuff. there’s like little to no panamanian community where I live, and I continuously get pushed out of more general latino communities bc I’m too white or americanized. I’ve been trying to learn and engage how I can but I feel like I’ll never be enough for peers or cousins. I’m tired of being told I don’t belong because I wasn’t raised bilingually or don’t have the same experience as a Mexican kid, and I’m tired of being othered by great aunts at cousins quinceañeras and worrying about coming off as a total gringo when I try to engage. I’ve tried to just ignore it and make myself out to be total white, but white people love to clock you no matter how white passing you think you are and push you out and degrade you just the same, even if they’re family. there’s no happy middle and I feel lost and I just want to finally connect to that part of my heritage and identity but it’s so daunting and I feel like no matter how much I learn I’ll never be welcomed

Identity Questions who gets to be seen as mixed race?

So I’ve been watching some videos recently and there’s been a conversation online about how society often doesn’t see dark-skinned people as the ideal mixed race or biracial person. I saw a video discussing dark-skinned, monoracial representation and how black beauty is often associated with lightskin or mixed women, which contributes to the erasure of darkskin black women. Some of the comments mentioned Ryan Destiny, and people were replying saying she isn’t good representation for monoracial Black women because she’s mixed race and has a white grandparent.

I don’t think I completely agree with this because she looks like a black woman, and I imagine she would generally be perceived and treated as one by society. This would also affect the roles she gets and how she’s portrayed in the media, if that makes sense?

It got me thinking about my own background. My mum is half east african and half yemeni, while my dad is ugandan. My DNA results show that I’m around 30% yemeni, but I consider myself a black woman. I’m brown-skinned and black-passing, and I don’t think anything about my appearance would suggest I have Yemeni ancestry. My sister, on the other hand, looks fully yemeni, although we have different dads.

I’m not trying to claim a mixed-race identity, but it made me wonder whether having mixed ancestry automatically changes how people categorise you, even if you identify as black and are perceived as black by society.

For example, if I was ever in the media, would I still be considered a Black woman? If people found out about my yemeni ancestry, would they suddenly say I’m not monoracial or that I can’t speak on certain experiences as a black woman? I wouldn’t want a percentage of my DNA to be used to invalidate my Blackness especially when I identify as Black and am generally perceived that way.

Discussion Anyone here 3/4 South Asian? What features did you inherit more? Do you look fully South Asian, ambiguous or 50/50?

When I was a teen, I looked racially ambiguous but after about age 21 or 22, I noticed that my South asian features started to get more dominant. The brother looks full but he's still a minor so I don't know how he'll look like as an adult.

Identity Questions Being from the Caribbean islands is definitely interesting lmao

For background I’m a Jamaican American both my parents are Jamaican my mother clearly is of African heritage due to the transatlantic slave trade and my father is of mixed heritage.

People ask me what I am racially and I honestly have no answer to give. Being from the Caribbean islands gives you a whole other level of identity crisis because for the most part everyone here is mixed some more than others.

My father is if of English, West African, and Chinese descent and it’s very prevalent in the way I look and the way I’m perceived, specifically my Chinese ancestry.

Since I was born I was mistaken as an Asian baby(quite literally as my mother was stopped leaving the hospital when I was born because security thought she had the wrong baby lmao), then soon blasian, then just “black” in American terms, and now blasian again as I had grew up and I don’t know how to feel about it.

I tell people I’m Jamaican and Chinese as my great grandparents had come to Jamaica and intermixed with the people already here, and also because I have extended family in china, even though I don’t know them and they don’t know me, but we are still blood related.

But it feels very weird nonetheless. Online I’ve been seeing a bit of discourse on where one’s ancestors had originally came from (mainly in African American conversations) and I feel pretty shitty as at least for them you can trace most of their ancestry back to west/central Africa whilst for me apparently I’m Mr. Worldwide 🫩

Honestly I just don’t know how to feel about myself identity wise I just say I’m Jamaican and leave it at that but I just don’t know what to say when the concept of racial identity is brought up.

This lowk js feels like a redundant mumbo jumbo post I’m so sorry 😭😭💔

Rant White parent refuses to understand that I'm a minority??

Title, basically. My mum's white latina, my dad's east Asian but dark skinned so I came out looking very racially ambiguous which to most people that means latino. My mother refuses to understand that I face racism.

She asks what I perceive myself as when I tell her of former teachers that have been xenophobic towards me, for example.

It's absolutely mind-boggling. She does not register that a) I am not white and b) more importantly, I do not LOOK white.

It's incredibly fucking frustrating. She's mocked me for saying that im a minority before. When we talked about the census she said I should register myself as "other white" (a category in the UK for people who are white but aren't of British or Irish heritage), despite the fact that my skin tone is olive brown???

Advice to stop people asking about my son

I have a beautiful mixed race son. He gets alot of questions about his race with his skin colour and unusual golden green eyes.
To start with I didn’t mind, but it’s become tiresome after a year. His race is part of him but there is so much more to him. No one asks about his toys or outfits.
Should I be more open to the questioning (despite it making me uncomfortable) or does anyone have any idea how to shut it down and move on without being rude.

Thank you in advance 🩷

We are UK based, where manners maketh man haha.

Rant How valid is it to b white passing but can barely interact with white people cuz I just think they’re lying in every way

Title I’m wasian and my dad is the white side and he didn’t live with me only my mum I didn’t have any family too I used to live in a small majority white town I didn’t get bullied or anything but I didn’t know the concept of being another race at age 10

I moved schools and I would say I never experienced racism in my life and always said it but I feel like I did
2 white girls said I was aggressive and nasty cuz I argued with someone for saying something racist and it was within a friend group where everyone was fully n completely white other than me they also said I was Chinese and fat they made fun of my nose for being weird they said I should get surgery or not live
I thought it wasn’t racism in the slightest bit when it was happening but later realised it probably was

Im white passing but some people say I just look like I have something that’s different from white and someone said I look Latina

I feel like white people just lie about their struggles I’ve only had white friends and I hate every single 1 of them it feels like I should try n find non white people to b friends with but I can’t make friends in general I have severe social anxiety
It feels like white all follow this same structure where they have the same basic issues they look for attention in the same way as well and just agree to always stick to that

I really hate being white passing because of this
I’d rather be a skinny and cute white girl, with all the problems that white girls and the comfort too
Or not, just anything that isn’t white passing but also seen the things that whites do

Rant White American mom wants to be called Abuela

My mom (white) and my dad (Mexican) had me as teenagers and didn’t stay together. All my childhood my mom has referred to my mixed status in a derogatory way/as the butt of a joke. Now I’m almost 40 and she’s really involved with conspiracy theories and is basically buying her citizenship throughout Latin America. She calls herself Mexican and insists on being called Abuela even though she’s knows NO Spanish. I’m the only person in the family who has Mexican indigenous/cultural heritage. Today she sent me a photo of her and my white stepdad riding a burro with ponchos on. My mom is the only blood relative I’m in contact with and our relationship is very much fragile so I do the best I can to accept the good parts and let go of the rest.

I feel insane and don't have anyone who can relate to this experience. I need some support.
