This is a citron not a lemon

u/Own_Ad_409 1d ago
Oh cool I thought they were just mutants
530
u/Versipilies 1d ago
They are occasionally used as rootstock on citrus trees so anything that grows below the graft will produce the rootstock fruit or if the tree died back below the graft at some point the entire tree can just be the rootstock species.
125
u/doctorhiney 1d ago
This is extremely cool plant knowledge I did not know.
114
u/PoppyBroSenior 1d ago
Look up the difference between broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, kohlarabi and collards. All of em are more or less the same plant bred for different genetic characteristics. The history of how the orange was created, how a lot of citrus fruits were made by hybridization, is pretty cool. Strawberries are one such fruit too. Selective crossbreeding and horticulture is pretty neat.

u/doctorhiney 1d ago
I’ve always known these facts but the rootstalk comment put them into actual actionable context for me. So cool.
26
u/Versipilies 1d ago
The cool bit is more why they graft. If the rootstoxk is from a dwarf tree it will dwarf whats on top, if its more cold hardy it will make the top more so, but the most common reason is usually disease resistance. Unfortunately grafted trees often have a shorter lifespan due to the graft failing or getting infected with age. Peaches and plums will usually last about 15 years depending on climate
42
u/skintigh 1d ago
Yeah I had a thornless lime tree that froze and became a limeless thorn tree.
11
u/Versipilies 1d ago
Yeah trifolate and swingle are pretty common rootstocks and both can be super thorny. They will eventually produce fruit, not good fruit.... but fruit like things.... regrafting is pretty easy luckily. Flying dragon rootstock does look really cool though

Could you graft more citrus varieties to the healthy citron main stalk and have branches of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, and citron?
→ More replies (1)24
u/Versipilies 1d ago
Yes you can, they are often called "fruit salad" trees. Similarly you can have pears, apples, and quince on one tree, and peaches, plums, apricots and cherries on another. As long as the grafts are the same family it generally works, there are some odd non compatability issues with certain varieties. Theres an guy who makes trees with 40 different varieties per tree. Upkeep takes some work since you have to be more careful about branch pruning. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_40_Fruit

More like relatives, the lemon is a hybrid of a citron and a bitter orange.
68
u/Azsunyx 1d ago
You mean life didn't give us lemons?
33
u/sagebrushrepair 1d ago
Sometimes you just gotta make different trees pollinate each other, ya know? It's tough
It's sorta like making lemonade when all you have is citron and bitter orange
7
u/Craigglesofdoom 1d ago
It's not clear if the lemon as we know it was a deliberate hybrid or chance seedling.

Be careful with them; if they are citrons (they’d taste like a sort of mellow non-bitter grapefruit), then they’ll mess with medications the same way grapefruit does.
9
u/MadcapRecap 1d ago
They are one of the 4 original citrus fruit and are absolutely delicious. The flesh is quite tart but the white pith is sweet and has a texture a bit like an apple. You can cut it into long segments and eat both bits together.

Saying they're full of shit with no actual argument isn't being a contrarian ya know. Let me present the question then as someone who has had lemon trees. What is more likely? A Citron rootstock with a graft and that fruit grew below the graft, or a mutation?

u/ih-unh-unh 1d ago
I know citron is French for lemon, is it considered a different type?

It's the progenitor fruit of the other citrus fruits, basically.

So I just found out that apparently, a lemon isn't naturally occurring and is a hybrid by cross breeding a bitter orange and a citron, which means life never gave us lemons; we invented them all by ourselves!!
38
35
u/Jhud6669 1d ago
Lots of everyday fruits and vegetables were invented by us and don't naturally exist in nature. Agriculture is neat
9
u/h00ter7 1d ago edited 1d ago
I’m probably not saying this correctly, but the bananas we eat all descend from the same tree, or maybe even one single banana that came out delicious lol
e: yeah I was mistaken, but it’s still interesting - all the bananas we eat today are clones of one another to preserve the taste. As in they graft the branches from one tree to the next to make sure the fruit tastes good and doesn’t mutate too much. This is true of apples too apparently.

And a bitter orange is just a hybrid of a Mandarin and a Pomelo.
Any citrus other than a citron, pomelo, mandarin, or papeda is a hybrid.

Citrons are their own distinct species of citrus. Lemons are actually a hybrid between a citron (citrus medica) and bitter orange (which itself is a hybrid between a Pomelo and a wild mandarin)

This looks like what in french we call a "citron cedrat" (citron is lemon in french, cedrat is citron... that's funny/confusing...). They have a very thick rind, and you can make marmelade out of the rind and it's delicious (I made a few like 3 or 4 years ago and they were very good, it can be a bit bitter but if you soak the rind in cold water before it's less bitter).

“You know, I’ve been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

16
u/sageandginger 17h ago
No one’s helping you so I guess I’ll do it. It’s from a porn intro clip that went viral like fifteen years ago for being silly; a couple is in their yard expressing their pride for their lemon tree and how they sure hope no lemon-stealing whores show up to steal their lemons. Smash cut to a barely-dressed woman shoving lemons into her leotard and getting noticed by the couple, who are less than happy about their lemons being stolen. Presumably sex happens after that, but that part didn’t go viral so I can’t say for certain.

Did the tree die back at any point? Pretty much all citrus is grafted on to root stock of a hardier citrus plant. I had a pomelo tree that got hit by frost it's second winter. The root stock was the only thing that survived. I was left with a thorny, non fruiting citrus something or other.
