I just wanted a hot dog Paramount doesn’t have translated subtitles on movies
fyi this whole scene is like 10 minutes long and fully in italian and i have no idea what is happening
87
u/IroesStrongarm 9h ago
Try turning off the subtitles. Netflix does that BS sometimes where the Forced subs don't work when you turn on subtitles, but when you turn off subs the forced channel shows up.

The standard print of the film (even in theaters) has it translated in subtitles for the audience even when subtitles would normally be turned off. A lot of this movie is in Italian.
This is actually very strange.

Of The Godfather Part 2? Yes lol
1
u/worthlessprole 9h ago
Since this dude deleted his comment before I finished my reply, I’ll just put it here:
Only the original theatrical prints had hard coded subtitles. When they restored the film and did the first digital transfers, they used the original negatives and used soft coded subtitles. You can still find bootleg transfers of the godfather part 2 with those hard coded subs.
This phenomenon, in the OP, is the result of inept management. Someone transcribes the film’s english scenes, but does not know Italian. They write “speaking italian” into the text file. No editor goes in and replaces “speaking italian” with the original subtitle text. They just upload it. To see the english subtitles for the italian scenes, you have to turn off the closed captions. Yes, it is stupid.
13
u/DoorFinch 9h ago
Yup. If it was the director's opinion that the audience needed to know what was being said, a translation would be on screen. The subtitles are not going to fill in gaps the movie deliberately leaves unfilled. It could even help the viewing experience if the viewers don't know what is said.
14
u/Deleena24 9h ago
It originally had the translates text.
This is due to most streaming services switching to AI subtitles. You'd notice this even on anime on Crunchyroll- last year everything was translated now it does this.
4
u/Complete_Entry 9h ago
I actually gave up on gf2 because of that. Pretty sure the TV version was subbed.
4
4
u/idiot-alpha 9h ago
No, GF2 is supposed to be subtitled and major plot points are described in the subtitles.

Instead of commenting the same thing on multiple comments, maybe look at others comments mentioning how this specific movie originally had subtitles when aired on TV / in theaters as it has a large portion of Italian in it. Someone said it could be AI subtitle creation with streaming services cutting it.
0
u/idiot-alpha 9h ago
If it was an old release that used burned in subtitles, but that really hasn’t been a thing since VHS or maybe some crappy early dvd release
9

u/H75311 9h ago
Exactly this. A lot of posts on this sub are "I'm 13 and don't know how this is supposed to work."
3
u/ColonelKasteen 9h ago
Except that guy is 100% wrong, the original theatrical release of GF2 had subtitles for nearly all Italian dialogue, including this scene. This is a very common fuck-up for streaming movies and pirated movies for films where foreign language parts are subbed even without subtitles being enabled.
But sure, be a dickhead to OP about a movie you aren't familiar with lmao
1
u/-retaliation- 6h ago
Funnily enough, entirely anecdotally, I've never had this fuck up on a pirated movie, or using subs from the opensubs database.
I've strictly only ever had it happen on services that are paid services, usually streaming like Netflix or prime.
4
1
u/-retaliation- 6h ago
No, this complaint gets posted regularly, and like clockwork someone who's super high on their horse playing know-it-all like you just comes in sassily acting like everyone else is stupid, and you know what's up, and says "you're not supposed to know what they're saying!"
But you're wrong, and this is a well known issue among many titles across plenty of streaming services.
You are supposed to know what they're saying here (as you are in many of the titles it does this in)
If you had seen this in the theaters it would have translated subs here.
But the services fuck it up constantly, and you get this.
13
u/BishopofHippo93 9h ago
There are two possibilities: if you turn the subtitles off, this scene may actually be subtitled in English. If that is not the case, then it’s likely intentional and you’re likely not supposed to understand what they’re saying.
6
u/LeilLikeNeil 9h ago
Yeah, Paramount doesn't create their own subs for the movie. And this is pretty common for english-language media in general. I watch everything with subs on, and dialogue not in English is overwhelmingly not translated, just says "speaks italian" or "speaks foreign language"
18
u/Toadsanchez316 9h ago
Subtitles for pirated movies are almost always way more accurate anyways.
11
u/ThaLunatik 9h ago
Back when District 9 came out, my husband and I downloaded and watched a bootleg copy of the film. We always watch movies with subtitles on and this was no different, yet when the Aliens -- and only the aliens -- spoke there were none. I assumed it was a creative decision and we were just supposed to infer what they were talking about based on what was happening in the scene.
Our friend later asked how we liked the movie and we told him it was good, but commented that it would've been better if we could understand some of the aliens were saying. He laughed and said it was supposed to show translation subtitles of everything they said 😂.
We still need to go back and give it a proper rewatch someday.

Years ago I wanted to watch Die Hard 4 (?) on a not official platform. I'm not English native so I needed subtitles. There's that scene where they talk in russian for a while and it's definitely an important scene, and the subtitles were not working, not in English, not in French, not in Spanish.... but it worked in Japanese lol. I spent more time I'd like to admit to trace the characters in google translate to have a very rough approximate translation, but that worked to understand what was going on lol
2
u/ElmosBigRedSchlong 5h ago
I watched Everything is Illuminated from a rip and it didn't have subtitles so I thought the audience was purposely not supposed to understand when the two older characters spoke Yiddish to each other, since Elijah Wood didn't seem to either.

No it is not lmao. The regular film cut of GF2 has subtitles for the Italian parts.
On Paramount+, if you turn off the regular subtitles, the english subtitles come BACK for the Italian parts instead of saying (in italian).
4
u/mycatpartyhouse 9h ago
But then there's no subtitles for the English dialog, which is also necessary.

Different track in the video file, it's like an overlay.
the streaming service suppresses it and replaces it with it's own subtitles, worse ones in this case.
1
u/No-Lunch4249 9h ago
Homie thinks a streaming service has a little man in a little tiny projector booth with a little tiny reel of film and that's how the movie plays
3
u/SippinOnHatorade 9h ago
Wait what, I thought there were little people inside of the little box acting for us in real time! I always thought it was tremendous commitment when pausing to get up for a snack, my entire reality has been shattered
2
u/LurkmasterP 9h ago
And when multiple people are watching the same movie simultaneously, they have to have multiple sets of actors doing the performance, and some of them aren't as good as others. That's the real reason why some people don't like a movie when it's objectively good, because they watched it with a F-squad acting it out. Thank you for attending my TED talk.
2
u/ColonelKasteen 9h ago
Because the streaming services used a master print without hard-coded subtitles so that they could subtitle the italian parts into other languages- if someone is watching in Sri Lanka, they'd want to read clear Tamil subtitles, not Tamil pasted over English subtitles already on the movie.
1
u/m1dnightknight 9h ago
These are soft subs so they aren't burned into the video. The problem I'm guessing is the english translations for Italian bits are probably coded on a "forced subtitle" track which is usually how foreign languages are translated to english on movies by default. The problem is they didn't add those parts in for the "english subs" you turn on. Some movies will hardcode the foreign language parts directly into the video portion or include them in the "english subs" to avoid this issue.
-11
u/Ok-West-1358 9h ago
Maybe that's just how they do it? I used to watch this movie with my dad when I was a kid and I vividly remember that they don't supposed to have subtitles. Some quick google searches also say that it was intended by the director for audience to grasp context from the visual and body language alone.
17
u/ColonelKasteen 9h ago
You're reading shitty AI answers about the wrong movie.
Godfather I had several scenes in Italian without subtitles for the reason you gave.
Godfather II had all the italian subtitled because they were plot-centric. This scene specifically was ABSOLUTELY subtitled.
0
u/mcampo84 9h ago
Literally only the scene where Michael kills the Turk
5
u/ColonelKasteen 9h ago
No, Luca Brasi's death scene also didn't have subs in the original release.
1
u/mcampo84 9h ago
Are you sure? I vividly recall Luca being subtitled asking, “What’s in it for me?” when Tataglia tries to convince him to come over to his side, and Tataglia responds, “$50,000”
2
u/ColonelKasteen 9h ago
Yep, in the 1997 25th anniversary re-releasw the studio added subtitles to that scene.
They were not there in the original print and it was an intentional directorial choice. Movies are unfortunately changed all the time in re-releases and between DVD editions.
5
3
u/Broad-Bath-8408 8h ago
No, it's not. There's subtitles for these scenes.
I wonder how many people nowadays are watching GF1 and GF2 for the first time on streaming and think they're super confusing because 50% of the dialogue is in another language that they can't understand. Like would you even know who Robert De Niro is playing in this scene or who the guy is in the white suit?
-5
u/rzk4 9h ago
bit fucking stupid that then

u/Steiney1 9h ago
Paramount may be the absolute worst streaming service out there. trying to watch any Star Trek series is a mix of audio that is too quiet to hear, but sound effects that are still loud in the neighbor's back yard, when it doesn't constantly freeze.
2
u/Crazy-Canuck463 9h ago
I was able to fix this though my surround sound settings and my firestick settings. Ive enhanced voice audio and then turned up my centre speaker and turned down my surround as the voices are usually through the centre channel. I also turned down commercials and theyre almost muted now.
1
u/Steiney1 9h ago
the Native LG app may be the worst version of it. I just got a fire stick to try out, see if it is any better.
1
u/Crazy-Canuck463 8h ago
I think its more the receiver for my surround. Just replaced my old onkyo with a new denon and its much better with the denon
3
u/MyUserNameLeft 9h ago
I swear this is a thing on all streaming services. I’ve watched many films where actors talk then switch to another language and the subtitles just disappear and I’m left googling the scene translated or looking up the script online
2
u/ttwinstanley 9h ago
Had the same thing happen in hulu, but it was for like three to five minutes

See, people keep saying that, but it fucks up the movie for us non-italian speakers. It's an American film.
2
u/tukuiPat 9h ago
Directors will purposely put in foreign languages into their movies with the intent for the audience to not know what's being said, but the Godfather trilogy should have subtitles for all the Italian dialog in the movies.
2
2
u/Tiiimmmaayy 9h ago
Turn the subtitles off. Had to do that when I was watching the latest Bond films on Netflix. It’s very annoying. It would only translate the foreign dialogue when subtitles were turned off, or else it would just show “talking in *foreign language*”. Kept having to rewind to turn off subtitles and replay it so I knew what they were saying.
Not sure about this specific movie, but there are times where it’s not supposed to be translated. Those weren’t those times and it was just shitty apps.

Yeah you get (Foreign Language) frequently too -- couldn't even bother to identify that it's in Italian.

Recently rewatched these first 2 Godfathers on 4K and many of the Italian spoken sequences do not have subtitles. Not sure if it’s the case in this exact scene, but at times it is an intentional choice.

I can imagine that soon all of the conversation will be shown just as "yapping" in the closed captions.
1
u/GrundleSnactcher46 6h ago
Its probably happened many times, but I remember watching John Wick 1 in theatre and they had stylized subtitles. Then its just "Speaking Russian" When I streamed it.
1
u/Top_Eggplant_7156 6h ago
Be grateful they know it's Italian, sometimes they will just say (speaking in foreign language) and call it a day
2
u/ExpBalSat 4h ago
What movie?
What is the exact duration of the scene?
Are you supposed to understand what’s going on?
Often times, foreign language scenes are intentionally unclear - they are meant to not be understood. I don’t know whether this is one of those scenes, but those seems to exist.
2
u/vv04x4c4 4h ago
Lmao do you not recognize The Godfather Part II? Thats wild to me!
It's a long scene and a lot of scenes are in Italian and you are supposed to understand it because the dialogue is part of the plot.
1
u/ExpBalSat 4h ago
I saw The Godfather sometime in the 80s (I was too young to appreciate it). Re-watching that one and watching the rest has always been on my to-do list but I’ve never gotten around to it.
Yeah, that’s some horrible subtitling. I assume it was subtitled in English in the theaters. I do video and film, mastering for network distribution, and I’m shocked that they would screw this up on The Godfather.
2
u/vv04x4c4 4h ago
Yeah i have it on blu ray it's sub titled there so I think it was subbed in the theaters.
Part II is better than the first part and half the movie is flashbacks
1
u/Nice_Marmot_54 2h ago
It’s not that shocking to me. The movie is 52 years old. Classic or not, once something is 5 decades old the majority of people aren’t going to have seen it. The median age in the US is just shy of 39, so most people* are more than a decade younger than the movie
*edit: people in the US

Maybe they are just repeating “in Italian” for 10 mins.. So that’s the translation.
