Arena Limited Championship structure revealed

The tournament structure and prize pool ($250,000) have been posted on magic.gg, and MTGScribe has an article with the details:

We already knew the dates - Jan 16/17.

There will be 12 rounds: 4 drafts, 2 each of Reality Fracture and Star Trek, and you advance with a positive record.

Given that they have said they expect to qualify ~120 participants, we can expect about 750 participants.

Assuming 768 participants (for round numbers), this would mean 15 pods in draft 4, so prize money would be as follows:

  • $3333.33 for 3-0

  • $2222.22 for 2-1

  • $1666.67 for 1-2 or 0-3

tl;dr:

  • 4 drafts, FRA/TRK/TRK/FRA

  • 2-1 or better to advance pods (no draws)

  • 3-0 in draft #1 gets you straight into draft #3

  • 2-1 in draft #3 gets you qualified for the LC (and for draft #4)

  • $250k prize pool, but only for making draft #4

PSA: Vraska, Cutting Glare cares about how many lands you have when the ability resolves.

Opponent casts Emrakul.
I unsummon Emrakul, sacrificing 3 lands.
Opponent casts Emrakul, I try to counter with icy reception, it doesn’t work because Emrakul untaps all their lands.
I draw into vraska with 7 lands on board. I cast vraska and target Emrakul, sacrificing down to 5 lands. This doesn’t kill Emrakul. I thought it would since the ability went on the stack while I had 7 lands. This confuses me, but so be it.

Fblthp wins the game from 12 cards in the library after drawing 7 with variable chaser and milling three with metamage after several Emrakul related punts.

Fblthp is love. Fblthp is life.

This draft I landed on to UG maybe in second pack, since i was being passed really good blue cards very late. Ended up drafting this cool deck which lacks interaction (sureshot sower worked great these games, once playing double duty with restore with empathy), but has a clear plan that executed well: long games with huge board states, some threats that the opponent needed to answer and me drawing almost my entire deck with arni and jace tokens, only for me to play fblthp when there were 2 cards in the library and attack for the win with restore with empathy backup if they kiled fblthp before attackers.

it was fun but the games took a long long time. 4 were won with fblthp's trigger, one with avatar of burgeoning echoes' ability, and a couple with verdant kraken's huge army + hunters axe.

Discussion Getting really tiresome playing against the same U/b/x control shells 9/10 times at high rank

And the worst thing is that this makes 75% of the archetypes in the format almost unplayable, as they have a terrible matchup into these grindy control decks. The "salvation" - the aggro decks - are still way too contested, and blue way too underdrafted, so the only way to get a decent fighting chance is to also play a grindy control deck and try to win those mirror slogs.

I bet this format is an absolute blast in pod play with good drafters. But on arena the unranked pods into ranked matchmaking just make it a dreadful experience. I want to start a draft, and I just think about those 5-8 20 minutes long control mirrors I will have to get through, and rather do anything else.

Anyone else feel this way?

There are lots of seats in this format where you should be drafting focused, curve conscious, low color creature decks.

Here's two decks that went 7-0, taking me from 120 mythic to top 30. Obviously the UW one is just a great deck top to bottom in a very open QD seat, but the BW deck is premier draft, just curving out and removing anything important, supplementing the opener with some incidental surveil. I even accidentally played an off color dual (which I drew, and still didn't remove until 6-0 smh).

When both blue good stuff and RG ramp is cut off I think white aggro can be quite good. There's a ton of cards here that just don't get picked highly but perform quite well when opponent is durdling. It's definitely a zig while they're zagging archetype. I never attacked a jace Planeswalker the entire 7 games I think.

Discussion Has there been an effort made to reconstruct the full echoed pair sheets?

• Upvotes

It seems that knowing the full sheet(s) would narrow down the possibilities for what the third card in the echoed pair slot could be significantly. This would obviously be most important in sealed, where you could more easily play around cards in you opponents' pools but also in draft, knowing the possible cards someone could have picked if a full pair is left pick2 could help with reading signals.

I don’t really love ghoul, but it goes well with silence and winter in this deck. Not really sure what else though. There are a lot of decent cards here but not great ones.

I’m hesitant to cut a land, so I guess maybe just one of the filler 2s?

I was also contemplating the Gecko, just cause the deck kinda lacks ways to push through at the end

First trophy after terrible run overall

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi guys,

just wanted to share my trophy list.

I am not the best drafter but I kept drafting FRA after several 1:3s, 2:2s or 2:3 attempts. Had to find my line with this set.
Ended Grixis this time and also started 2:2 but had a run afterwards with good opening hands and trust to find "naturally" grixis with [[Apex Witchstalker]].

Also had only a single rare, [[Gideon, the Oathless]], which I did only pay in 2 games iirc. He more or less shut off my opp to cast creatures as he was down to low life with no board/blockers. Otherwise this could have been an no-rare trohpy. /sadge
[[Mable, Bitter Recluse]] feels great for trade, but sometimes I felt bad for playing it T1 without her additional payoff to shut down jaces.
The blue parts felt great overall, except [[Ruric Thar, Biomagus]]. I think I only pleaced him once. Red was indeed necessary, 2 bodies with [[Heartstring Puller]] and removal/face dmg with [[Tether Technician]]. I would have loved to discard [[Theoretical Necromancer]] for recursion, but did not found any in the end.

I actually had the chance to get 8, but had to get at least a little removal in pack 3. I know I have to make a few more cuts, just wanted to pust the funny screenshot first.

Quick Draft direction help (P3P2)

• Upvotes

Add this point of the draft: Would you cut red completely because my main gameplan is GW-lifegain or try to splash some? So picking Hexhaven Battalion, No Admittance or Vigorbloom Charm?

Quickdraft (P1P2). Just picking the best card, or a buildaround card?

Would you really take Protege's Awakening because it is the best card? Or one of the Saheelis because those are better to built a deck around?

Discussion The main issue I have with FRA (draft in particular) isn't Blue itself. It's that Blue can absorb the best of every color so seamlessly, creating this black hole effect on the draft.

It would be one thing if a Ux deck were the best. That would allow other color combos to shine, as well as not be fed on in the draft. But Blue in FRA, along with the fixing, is able to siphon the best of other colors without really being punished for it.

For starters, almost all Ux combinations can win by themselves. UB, UR being the strongest. (UW in surgery, and UG if it's there, but it's green so it's most likely splashing a third). Couple this with Blue's card advantage, and the strong amount of fixing possible, and this makes Uxy piles increasingly powerful, with little risk involved.

The side effect this has on the other color combinations is pretty glaring, as it's nothing for Ux based decks to splash an off-color bomb, which takes it away from the other lanes in that color.

Some of the strongest, most fun decks are the non-blue, 2 color synergy piles. GW life gain, RB aggro/grind, RW aggro, Gruul... But none of these get a chance to really thrive given Blue's gravity during the draft.

For example, I would honestly take the strongest BR deck over anything in this format. It just has such reach, and imo is the most fun to play. It got me a direct trophy, it got me a contender trophy. But so much has to go right for it to come together, like opening the correct rares, and that's including the fact that a lot of BR's cards are filler in other decks, but important pieces of the puzzle in the BR shells. So when the Uxy decks absorb the best BR colors into their picks, it leaves scraps and filler for the rest.

Which pulls people into blue, in order to do the same.

Anyway that's my rant. I think this is one of the best formats we've had in a while, but I really do think the cracks are starting to show.

How to improve as a first time platinum

Post image
1 Upvotes

After a handful of trophies early on in FRA, I reached platinum for the first time and hit a wall of 1-3's and 0-3's. This is my latest 0-3 deck. https://www.17lands.com/details/a33158b1b8594b44bc710fcee5c4e864

I feel semi-confident in my ability to draft, but I think I have blind spots I'm struggling to diagnose when looking back through my gameplay. I'd appreciate the community's expertise and fresh sets of eyes to help me figure out where I can improve. Many thanks in advance!

My takes on where I punted:

Game 1: I think I could have been more aggressive and traded off my 3/1's suboptimally a little earlier to clear the board for my Crusher that I knew I had coming. I don't know if it mattered vs the fliers I lost to, but I probably shouldn't have traded off my deathtouch creature either during the board stall.

Game 2: Using my Pyre Rhymer as fodder for the counter felt right, since I didn't want the Tenured Tethermage to get countered later, but I would understand if it was better to have passed my turn without casting anything. Memory trap on Hapatra might have been better saved for a different creature, but since they had the Necromancer I didn't want it to be brought back to remove one of my big creatures.

My opponent punted by using the deathtouch recursion trick on a token, so losing this one hurt.

Game 3: I punted by completely ignoring that they had Hall of Echoes and got too aggressive before fully stabilizing at the end. First time playing against that card, I mistakenly thought it was only for legendary creatures.

My opponent here punted by using Fulminant Forte when they could visibly see I had the instant spell to pump my prowess creature, so felt extra bad to lose this one.

Help with Final 3 Cuts (43/40)

3rd Reality Fracture draft. Help me improve my draft skills if you are able.

https://www.17lands.com/draft/2a84c3e77d8d42d9ad4b50bf32b6c243/1/1

The main ask though is I really need help with whittling this deck down to 40 though. I have it at 43/40, but which last 3 would you cut (or which cuts would you add back)? I am admittedly not very great at deck building (or drafting) but trying to get better.

https://www.17lands.com/deck/2a84c3e77d8d42d9ad4b50bf32b6c243/0?view=deck

Should I run just the one Fblthp? Cut the Twinned Vision & Ferocity?

Thanks for any help.

I'm afraid to start drafting Reality Fracture. Should I just sit this out?

I'm more of a Constructed player at heart than a Limited player, and I tend to do much better at Sealed than at Draft unless I've had a lot of practice with a set (or just rely more on 17lands data than my own judgment). When Reality Fracture came out, I used my two Sealed tokens from the Play Bundle on Arena, and both times I had a much harder time than usual building my deck and ended up doing worse than I expected even though each sealed pool had an Elder Sphinx (one had the G/W one, the other the G/R one) so it's not like I completely lacked bombs. I haven't tried any drafts yet and haven't quite finished listening to the set review LR podcast or started listening to the "Format Overview" podcast. (Side note: I'd much rather read than watch or listen to Magic content, because I can read like 3x faster than I can understand spoken language - this might be a neurodivergence thing - but there are very few people like LSV when it comes to Magic strategy, so I just let the podcasts play when I'm driving.)

I used to play Limited sometimes in the MTGO days and really wish I could do Bo3 pod drafting like on MTGO ten years ago because it's just a way better way to play than Bo1 against whoever opened and/or got shipped the most broken stuff by the people in their own pod once you reach 4 or so wins, but I can't afford to shell out that kind of money to lose at Magic and I'm worried that my EV on playing Reality Fracture at all is going to end up too low to have been worth it - I'd honestly rather play more The Hobbit or even TMNT drafts because they're simple enough that I managed to end up fairly comfortable with the formats and I like to be able to just curve out and play removal. (I've been playing 20 creatures 19 burn spells 21 lands in any Constructed format where it's viable since 2001.)

Marshall complains about getting tired of Limited formats, but I could have been happy to spend six months to a year only playing the same set without getting tired of it, as long as I'm at least breaking even on gems. (I spent a year on MTGO going infinite in original Kamigawa block drafts by doing nothing but drafting U/W regardless of what cards I saw - it was literally the only color combination I knew how to draft and when I tried to draft anything else I always got pulled into UW anyway so eventually I completely gave up. And as long as it was profitable, I was very happy to do it.)

I also wish I could play Sealed for ranking points - I really, really want that achievement for hitting Mythic in Limited, but my win rate in Premier Drafts at Platinum hasn't been good enough to get me out of it given the amount of games I've been willing to throw money away to play, and Quick Draft pick orders get weird as hell because the bots are bad at mimicking players (they pass removal a lot, etc.) and that throws me off, and Traditional Draft can't get me ranking points. (Should I be doing ranked Pick Two drafts because they're cheaper?)

The other thing is that I've been having financial worries recently, so although I'm sitting on five draft tokens and about 20,000 gems, I absolutely can't afford to break out the credit card for Magic for a while; once my gems are gone, they're going to stay gone. I've been staying out of the Arena Opens because even if I think I could win a box often enough to pay for the entry fee, I'd still have to spend 6000 gems and get nothing much for it way too many times to make it worth the risk.

So, um, enough ranting, but would I be amiss if I just sit this one out or maybe just do one ranked Limited event to qualify for rewards at the monthly reset? Or is it a good format that I should try out and maybe even get some of the achievements?
