KC Rants 😡 👎 Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program

Thumbnail

The Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program was brought forward by the community in the form of an initiative petition and became active on August 7th, 2018. The Program provides regulations for health and safety standards in rental housing in Kansas City, Missouri.

I recently sought assistance from the program, they came out and inspected yesterday. After they spoke with Block Multifamily and informed them of the requirements needed to fix my apt.

Today Block Multifamily gave me a 10 day to vacate letter. 🤷🏽‍♂️

But they cashed my full rent check this month.

They even locked me out of the online resident portal to prevent me from getting copies of all my maintenance requests.

Things are getting a bit sloppy Block.

KC Rants 😡 👎 Why does Kansas City fail so miserably at enforcing simple street parking rules?

Given the city’s budget woes & the recent push for reducing pedestrian deaths, this seems like very low hanging fruit to tackle. I spend most of my time in/around The Plaza & surrounding neighborhoods & Midtown. It’s incredibly frustrating seeing the SAME cars being illegally parked day after day, for weeks at end with no consequences. I have tried to report to 311 in the past, but they always just delete/close out what I submit. Hopefully someone with the power to do something on this front sees this post 🤷🏻. Just imagine how much money we’re leaving on the table that could be used to make our city better!

Legal Questions ⚖️ Who to call about mentally disabled homeless guy.

There's a homeless guy who wanders around by my work. He is nice and never causes any trouble. I'm very concerned because he has become painfully thin. It's become obvious that he needs help. Since the cops around here are prone to be rough, I really don't want to call them. Is there maybe a social services group I should call? I don't know what to do. I'm just worried about him. Edit: I have given food on numerous occasions, and he will forget he has it and wonder why he is holding a McDonald's bag then forget that he was supposed to eat it and ask where it came from... or set it fown somewhere and forget where he set it... I don't want to diagnose or anything, but it kind of resembles dementia to me. He also will try to give food to the invisible person who he believes walks around with him.

Where to Eat? 🍽️ Dining single in Kansas City

I finally had a chance to go to Piropos in Braircliff. I had been looking forward to this for a while. I went by myself on a Wednesday at 4 pm. No one was in the dining room. I asked to sit by the windows. They said only larger parties could sit there. They then took me to a small room off to the side, basically a closet, with only one table and no windows. I declined to sit there and they then took me back into the main dining area a little further from the windows at a table for two. That was fine. I do not understand why they tried to seat me in a closet. I understand that larger parties mean more money but nobody was there. Only two people came in while I was there. I ended up spending $100 just for me for my dinner, more than enough to deserve being treated like any other guests. This has happened to me before at various restaurants but this was the worst example. Do other single diners receive this kind of treatment? I’m tired of being treated as less than because I am alone.

Jobs/Networking 💼 Looking for Electrical Apprenticeship Opportunities in KC Area

I’m 19 and currently looking to get started in the electrical trade around Kansas City. I live in Warrensburg but I’m willing to commute for the right opportunity.
I don’t have any direct electrical experience yet, but I have a few years of experience in landscaping, including running a crew. I’m used to physical work, long hours, and working in all kinds of weather.
I’m looking for a company willing to take on someone who’s new to the trade and ready to learn. I’m interested in residential or commercial electrical work and would like to find somewhere I can build a long-term career.
I’ve been applying to apprenticeships and reaching out to contractors, but figured I’d post here too.
If anyone knows of companies hiring helpers or apprentices, or has any recommendations on where to apply, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Salons/Barbers/Spas 💈✂️ Best barber for curly hair on men

Hello, I was hoping for some suggestions. I get my hair from the jewish side of my family, but i have never really cared for it and just gotten short cuts. But I have been growing it out and getting a lot more compliments. Is there a good place to get a haircut that really helps with more curly hair?

Preferably on the missouri side but I am willing to make a trip.

Preferably also open on weekends or after 6 on weekdays.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Local Politics 🗳️ October 13 is the deadline to register to vote if you live in Kansas

Here's a link for early voting. In Johnson County you can go to any polling location for early voting, but can only go to your specific polling location on voting day:

https://www.jocoelection.org/voting-election-info/advance-voting

Here's a link to check your voter registration:

https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview/

And here's a link to register to vote if you have not already:

https://www.kdor.ks.gov/Apps/VoterReg

This website allows you to look up your ballot, and it's not state specific so folks in Missouri and other states can also use this link:

https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup

It's important to know who you're voting for, but getting to the polls is only the first step. The next part is holding them accountable for their promises. I started using the app 5calls a year or two ago, but it really only scratches the surface and doesn't give you information regarding local politics, so I've started doing some research on my ballot and district. If and when these people get elected, we can start making phone calls, sending emails, or even sending physical mail to remind them that we didn't forget what they promised to do.

I may share other information as I do research, but most offices on your ballot will be unique to your district. If you want to find others with the same ballot, talk to your neighbors about it if you can.

I just wanted to get this on people's minds, so if you forgot, you still have a chance to register!

Friendship/Dating 👥 Today saved by professional window tinter

I was hired to come recover those door panels I knew couldn't be recovered, not the way they required. Not like the factory.

I spent way more hours there today than I had expected - somehow that didn't bother me.

Through each of our attempted goes at the endeavor we concluded that it was definitely a factory only application and that your dad needed to buy the over lays, still I was pretty disheartened. I hate to fail. I don't enjoy not being able to make something work, it's not a feeling I walk with often.

I didn't charge as the job, although completed, was not up to my quality of work. I was checked out and frustrated - but the way you handled it completely saved the day. The perspective and kindness you offered forced me to join you and see it in a way that couldn't pick myself apart.

Thank you for that and thank you for the Hamilton. That USD has so much more value than its denomination.

It also didn't hurt that you were quite nice to look at. If my some awesome swing of fate you see this and are into that. Please, let me know - although I won't push my luck, I have to put it out there.

We should hangout sometime, in whatever capacity.

Getting Around KC/Parking 🅿️🚏🚲 Parking behind New Theatre Restaurant question

Hi there. Heading to New Theatre Restaurant tonight, and we always parked in the main parking lot on the west side. That gets a bit crowded when leaving. I only recently discovered there's a back door, and I'd like to confirm my suspicions on where to park.

It looks like I can park on the east side between Phenix Salon Suites and SureFire CPR (both down the row from the excellent Cardboard Corner Cafe) and walk under an awning to enter through a back door? Most likely with stairs going up (which is true on the front side too).

Anyone familiar with that area able to confirm or dispute my thinking? I don't want to waste time driving around trying to find the secret spot only to end up in the main parking lot anyway.

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Is there anywhere cheap in the area I can go if I have a medical problem but no insurance?

Not a serious medical issue, just a bone I’ve tweaked somehow and now I’m in a fair amount of pain. So it’s not an emergency, I just want someone to look at it and tell me what is wrong and how to fix it. Problem is I don’t have insurance or much money. Is there a place I can go with this or do I just have to tough it out?

Friendship/Dating 👥 I'm starting a KC guild for World of Warcraft Forever! Wanna hang out?

Hey local nerds! I'm planning to play WoWF when it comes out on Nov 4th. A few of my buddies are joining me for a relaxed leveling guild, and I thought it would be nice to invite any other local folks who might want to join us. We're all grown-ups with jobs and lives and stuff, so even if we start raiding in 2027, it'll be 1-2 nights a week, not sweaty, just chill. We're here for a good time!

Check out the website at https://wehappyfew.us and hit me up on the Discord if you have any questions. See you in Azeroth!

Friendship/Dating 👥 Interested in a Guitar Hero/Clone Hero Meetup

Title was kinda cringe to write, I know, but I've been playing Clone Hero for about 6 months now and have amassed over 500 songs across various metal and alternative genres. Mainly 2010s metalcore and pop/punk

I know people meet up at board game cafes and places like that, and I thought it'd be cool to do something similar with Clone Hero. I'd bring my laptop and guitar controller and just let people play, try out some songs, and have fun with it.

The only thing is, I'm not really sure how to go about organizing something like this. I'd rather not have a bunch of strangers come to my apartment, so I'm wondering if there's a public space or venue that would be good for something like this.

I know it's a pretty niche idea, but I just love rhythm games and would love to share that with other people. Doesn't have to be anything serious or super organized, just a chance to hang out, play some songs, and have a good time.

Has anyone done anything similar or have any ideas for where something like this could happen? I'd love to hear some suggestions!
