Players Only Dodgers' Alex Call blasts controversial Sydney Sweeney ad

https://www.thebiglead.com/dodgers-alex-call-sydney-sweeney-novig-commercial-soft-porn/

Since the last post about this got deleted because it contained a X screenshot, hopefully this one actually stays for comment.

All the sports betting ads, ED ads, pharma ads, the Hegseth fascist military ads, the unhinged political ads, it’s all fucking enough already.

EDIT: I'm glad we can all agree on something, flairs notwithstanding.

Man, those war ads are so weird. And we’re playing for it.

Nothing says warrior like having a hair and makeup suite set up in the Pentagon.

This. That soft bitch is as far from the term "warrior" as you can possibly get. He sure likes to cosplay though.

Its been a while since I worked there, but pretty sure the Pentagon has a makeup store lol. Also a very convenient flower store for the poor dudes working all hours so they can bring flowers home to their wife.

Who is that ad supposed to target? The people who crow about patriotism are too busy at their keyboards to serve.

The people who actually join the military want a job with benefits.

There’s a fresh batch of 18 year olds every year

25

u/jlrc2 Chicago White Sox 9h ago

Those batches are getting smaller every year as well, so the armed forces will need to get an increasingly high percentage of them to sign up if they want to maintain their numbers.

It's almost as if something happened 18 years ago that ruined the economy and made people not want to have kids

6

u/jlrc2 Chicago White Sox 7h ago

Yeah that was definitely a metaphorical kick in the nuts although it seems like there are other things at play too

Reassure the people who are already on their side. It's like how car ads are often actually for people who have already bought the car and meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

42

u/myassholealt New York Mets 8h ago

meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

So many American manufucturer ads stopped even touting the actual build quality of the car and it's all blah blah, America, Patriot, America, Be Proud, Buy our vehicle cause America.

6

u/sculltt Cincinnati Reds 6h ago

Car ads are almost all emotional appeals, even if they aren't claiming patriotism. There's no logical way to try to convince people to buy a hugely expensive item with massive depreciation that people use on average 4% of the time (and even then, most of that time people hate using it, because it means dealing with/being stuck in traffic.)

3

u/myassholealt New York Mets 6h ago

Maybe I'm in the minority then, cause back in the day they used to provide info like crash test ratings and other data from tests or award categories. It wasn't exclusively the patriotism angle. Even some of the pickup truck ads don't even advertise how much weight in can tow. It's just 30 seconds telling us in multiple ways to be a patriot by buying their product.

17

u/Asshole_Poet Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago

We keep the middle class poor and college expensive so we can sucker in kids who want to escape the cycle. If some of them die, fuck it!

It's just as much intended to reassert the social norm of troop worship and the image of "America (and the GOP) = strong"

2

u/jdbolick Baltimore Orioles 9h ago

But the people this actually will work on already feel that way because they're beer bellied LARPers who put Punisher logos on their lifted pick-ups. Those guys aren't signing up for anything but diabetes.

Those people are immensely important to this regime.

You have people at home that would aggressively shut down any questioning of what the hell our military is doing.

Keeps red towns red and keeps regular people from understanding that you can condemn your government while still being patriotic.

Sorry for the rant.

My wife and I are both veterans from long ago, we both got out 24 years ago. Just yesterday we were talking about the current state of the military and its leadership and my wife says to me, "Who the hell would join the military today?"

I imagine those ads are completely useless and targeted at people who already know they want to join the military, ad or no ad.

u/Burto72 Milwaukee Brewers 11h ago

The fact that there is a war.gov website is kind of disturbing.

96

u/grubas New York Yankees 10h ago

The entire ad is Fascist.  It's not fascist coded it's not fascist winking.  It's literally what you'd expect a character to turn on the TV to illustrate that this is a fascist government.

I still kind of can't believe that it's now called the War Department.

21

u/karawec403 Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago

Legally it’s not. Congress named it DoD, only Congress can change it. War is just the current administration’s preferred pronouns.

-3

u/Opening-Bandicoot859 New York Mets 9h ago

For most of our history, it's been called the war department.

4

Truth in advertising. I like this a lot better than calling it "defense" while doing more or less the same shit.

Why is that disturbing?

Edit: why downvoted for asking such a vanilla question?

38

u/Hobbies-R-Happiness 10h ago

Because we shouldn’t seek out war…

-35

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 10h ago

I don’t see how that follows? Bulk of the resources are spent on preparation/defense/deterrence of war

18

u/photomike San Francisco Giants 10h ago

Huh, maybe they should change the name to the Department of Defense then

-18

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 10h ago

dank red herring. Thankfully was able to find a genuine articulate answer from someone

21

u/angryjew Seattle Mariners 10h ago

Defense? Would it be defense if I sat in your yard & prevented you from bringing groceries home & then shot at you when you tried to get past me? When was the last time the US actually defended itself from aggression vs being the aggressor.

-14

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 10h ago

Bulk of the resources are spent on preparation/defense/deterrence of war

Then why did they change the name from Department of Defense to Department of War?

12

u/40_Is_Not_Old MLB Pride 10h ago

Because the insecure manchild running that department thought it sounds "tough".

Seriously, almost every single thing Hegseth does is the actions of a deeply insecure individual, who makes policy based on performative toughness.

1

u/Opening-Bandicoot859 New York Mets 9h ago

It hasn't officially changed. It was the war department until after WWII, when it was renamed DOD.

0

u/penguinopph Chicago Cubs • RCH-Pinguins 8h ago edited 8h ago

Well, the commercial straight up says "Paid for by the Department of War" on it.

2

u/Opening-Bandicoot859 New York Mets 8h ago

I understand, but officially, it's still the DOD. Changing it officially would require an act of Congress.

-11

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 10h ago

Red herring, not the point under discussion. Thankfully I found one commenter that was able to articulate an actual response

5

u/Galxloni2 Chunichi Dragons 7h ago

i dont think you know what red herring means. you keep using it wrong

0

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 7h ago

Then explain why it's wrong (you can't)

3

u/Galxloni2 Chunichi Dragons 7h ago

They aren't changing the point or distracting from the discussion. The point was why the name department of war was bad. Your argument was that they defend against war and these people are making the point that department of defense fits that way better. It's entirely the point of the discussion. You just dont like the response

u/Burto72 Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago

Because it gives the impression that we are a country that is seeking to go to war. When a new soldier enlists in the armed forces, I'd prefer they do it with the intention and mindset of defending our country (aka the Department of Defense), as opposed to seeking out war against others.

-3

u/sentry_chad Kansas City Royals 10h ago

5

u/IndycarFan65 Milwaukee Brewers 9h ago
