All the sports betting ads, ED ads, pharma ads, the Hegseth fascist military ads, the unhinged political ads, it’s all fucking enough already.

EDIT: I'm glad we can all agree on something, flairs notwithstanding.

Who is that ad supposed to target? The people who crow about patriotism are too busy at their keyboards to serve.

The people who actually join the military want a job with benefits.

Those batches are getting smaller every year as well, so the armed forces will need to get an increasingly high percentage of them to sign up if they want to maintain their numbers.

Reassure the people who are already on their side. It's like how car ads are often actually for people who have already bought the car and meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

41

u/myassholealt New York Mets 8h ago

meant to help them feel reassured of their purchase decision.

So many American manufucturer ads stopped even touting the actual build quality of the car and it's all blah blah, America, Patriot, America, Be Proud, Buy our vehicle cause America.

5

u/sculltt Cincinnati Reds 6h ago

Car ads are almost all emotional appeals, even if they aren't claiming patriotism. There's no logical way to try to convince people to buy a hugely expensive item with massive depreciation that people use on average 4% of the time (and even then, most of that time people hate using it, because it means dealing with/being stuck in traffic.)

3

u/myassholealt New York Mets 6h ago

Maybe I'm in the minority then, cause back in the day they used to provide info like crash test ratings and other data from tests or award categories. It wasn't exclusively the patriotism angle. Even some of the pickup truck ads don't even advertise how much weight in can tow. It's just 30 seconds telling us in multiple ways to be a patriot by buying their product.

17

u/Asshole_Poet Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago

u/MC_Micro_Penis Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

For me the absolute darkest ads are from one of the casinos that advertises on spectrum. It will usually show a couple doing whatever, some kind of resort activity, then they will pass through a door that leads to a beautiful landscape where, incongruously, two slot machines are waiting. Of course, these days slot machines are basically designed with the goal of making us into drooling zombies, mashing on a button for hours on end in a diaper.

I think the tag line is the incredibly new-speak-esque "welcome to freedom".

Every time I see it I feel genuinely sad.

77

u/KRandMG 10h ago edited 9h ago

Come on man, those ads are totally realistic.

All the gorgeous 23-year-old women spend their Friday nights dressed to the nines at the local Indian casino an hour away from civilization, where every man is wearing a tailored suit and high-fiving his buddies as he wins for the fourth time in a row.

13

u/ILoveCornbread420 Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

My favorite part is when the guy magically comes out of a TV to refill a lady’s wine glass, then she immediately walks away.

13

u/KRandMG 9h ago edited 9h ago

Or the 40-something guy who’s just out of shape enough to be somewhat relatable to the average suburban dad walking in with his beautiful 30-something blonde wife as they smile and open their mouths to gasp while taking in the majesty of the dimly-lit room that smells like lung darts and old people who don’t have anything in their 401k.

And remember—according to the voiceover, you’re not a sucker when you go to the casino, you’re a “player.”

3

u/Charming_Squirrel_13 7h ago

i haven’t seen these ads but this comment chain has me very confused lol

3

u/KRandMG 7h ago edited 7h ago

If you move anywhere within a 2-hour drive of an Indian casino there’s an excellent chance you’ll see one exactly as described, many, many times, during just about every single sporting event you watch.

They’ll also highlight the resort’s golf course where the husband goes to ditch his family after gambling away the kids’ college funds as they sit and wait for him by the pool.

1

u/ThePrussianGrippe Chicago Cubs 5h ago

The most normal ones I’ve seen is a group of people dancing through different areas of the casino, which is at least normal and not a surrealist nightmare.

0

u/MC_Micro_Penis Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

Just like lottery ticket commercials with cartoon animals. PA has Gus the groundhog. I'm sure everyplace else has something similar. Gus even has a "clever" catchphrase. Keep on scratchin!

Scratch your way to forclosure!

Casinos are fun. But like alcohol, moderation and self control is the key. And neither is promoted in any commercial ever.

12

u/SmallLetter Atlanta Braves • Seattle Mariners 9h ago

Addictive activities need to be regulated against advertising at the MINIMUM in such a way that children will never see them. Cigarettes, alcohol, gambling. Anything else is an absolute FAILURE to uphold "the best interests of the child", which is a simple and yet profound concept that most world experts consider to be FOUNDATIONAL to any functionally just and ordered society. Ergo, america is a cesspit that doesn't give 2 shits about it's kids

I also can't stand the current DraftKings rewards club ad read I have to skip over or listen to on most podcasts currently. I mean that kind of betting and the behavior of Draftkings is deplorable anyway, but this just seems so unethical. Getting rewarded for losing? They are kinda doing it anyway to keep milking their wales and addicts, but this is so blatant.

51

u/bantha42 Los Angeles Dodgers 10h ago

Kind of insane the 180 we did on gambling as a society seemingly overnight.

19

u/RogueModron Milwaukee Brewers 9h ago

I'm guessing there was some policy or policies that were quietly dismantled.

You ever wonder why televangelism and the associated scams got big in the 80s? Like why specifically then? There used to be a law that television stations had to give up a few hours of air time on Sundays (or it may have been the weekend) for cheap/free religious programming, that wasn't allowed to profit from this. Reagan did away with that. So the wolves swooped in and started in with the prosperity gospel and made tons of money on it.

This is obviously a paraphrase and honestly it's half-remembered from when I read the excellent book Sleepwalking Through History by Haynes Johnson about the Reagan years, but it's correct in the broad strokes.

The point is, it's usually some small and boring policy change that has huge consequences.

2

u/Artistic_Bit6866 Milwaukee Brewers 8h ago

The administration’s favorable policies towards prediction markets, which their family members are invested in, has accelerated this. Things were already trending towards more gambling, but it’s been supercharged

1

u/jimihenderson New York Mets 8h ago

there's really no "we". there's a commission of people who decided that money is more important than protecting people who are weak and vulnerable to this specific thing. most people tend to have the same beliefs on it, freedom is a good thing and overregulation of how we spend our money isn't the government's business, but much like cigarettes we don't need to see ads rubbing our noses in it at every corner and the degree to which it is predatory towards children should probably have some regulation. at least that's how everyone i know looks at it and has always looked at it

It blows my mind that there are people out there who watch commercials without pressing mute. Mute is the second most important button on the remote, behind Power.

(Most of these are still pretty obnoxious even on mute, though.)

17

u/No_Difference_9195 New York Yankees 10h ago

I do this when ads get repetitive and my brain can’t take them anymore. But normally, I use the sound as a signal when the game is back on. I’m doing something and listening for the commentators or other intro, as opposed to staring at the screen without sound or constantly looking up to see if it’s back on.

Yah, usually I can tune out the ads and look at my phone or use it for a bathroom break. But ads these games, oy vey

Sadly, when using an Apple TV, the only way to mute is the phone app remote or if you have a separate sound system and remote for that specifically. I even mute / ffwd the mid inning 2/3 screen ads but after a while I give up cause it’s exhausting to keep opening my phone app. But yeah, Muting is the way.

The Apple TV remote has a mute button. I’m not sure what that guy even means? You obviously have to set it up once to connect it to the TV/sound system but after that it works fine.

1

u/fid_a Seattle Mariners 4h ago

Eh, mine doesn’t but clearly others do:

1

u/fid_a Seattle Mariners 4h ago

They added it eventually, it’s likely just a design decision to keep the grid on the remote as minimal and simple as possible and feedback said that a mute button was less helpful than a…microphone/Siri button? Who knows.

Now you have me questioning my memory on that one. But if you do have them, I don't remember seeing them in my limited sample size. At least not as much as I see them on US broadcasts.

Most of the new music I know is just pharmaceutical jingles.

The AI anime pharmaceutical ad is particularly off-putting.

I miss 2009. Seemed like postseason baseball was the time of year video game companies did advertising blitzes for their holiday games. Still had pharma and political ads. But it was nice to see a solid amount of Mario, Master Chief and Pikachu mixed in.

Watching the game in a bar surrounded by strangers has never been more weird

In fairness, one of those things is not like the other. Is it really so bad that kids learn what the Department Formerly Known as Defense has been doing all along? Maybe if more people thought about this they wouldn't only care about war when the price of gas goes up.

Don’t forget about the AI ads!

I don't know if baseball understands this because money, but having all of your commercials being directed to people 65+ is not going to attract a younger audience.

The national ad buys on the Cleveland series for perhaps the worst negative political ads I've seen is something else too.

Don't forget liberty mutual, and other insurance ads

What happened to normal advertising?

Don’t forget the ballsack trimmer adds. They really help make watching baseball a wholesome family experience.

As someone with an incredibly fragile ego who isn't comfortable with my own masculinity, I appreciate it.

It reminds me what it means to be American. If I wasn't seeing breasts behind footballs, eagles, war, guns and pills for my erectile dysfunction, I don't know what I'd do. It might even make me start believing that women and minorities deserve equal treatment.

Now if you'll excuse me, I got a multi leg parlay to bet on. prediction market to trade options on.

Gosh, I’m Canadian and I’m getting spammed with a bunch of Halloween Bakeshop ads. Not complaining about that again!

Commercials always fucking suck but they especially suck when it’s the same 3-4 constantly being aired.

Well, it's been great to watch online streams, depending on which feed you get, NO ADS. None at all.
