Transportation Heads up! It's Baltimore Running Festival weekend! Spoiler

For those of you who may not know, this is the Baltimore Running Festival weekend, being held on Saturday, October 17th. This means YES there will be parking restrictions, and YES there will be road closures.

Rather than seeing a number of people saying they had no idea, and were left unprepared, here are links with info on the street closures and parking restrictions:

Vent Sewage Overflow in my Basement

Post image
71 Upvotes

The other day, I asked about a plumber because I had six inches of water in my basement. Well, come to find out that there was a blockage in the sewer lines on my street, and while my line was clear, someone else's was blocked and my basement flooded. As soon as the city unplugged the blockage, all of the water going through my sump pump stopped.

I just got the bad news from my insurance company that I don't have the proper sewer rider on my account, so insurance was denied. (just s h o o t me!)

Has anyone tried to go after the city to have them pay for some of the damage? At this point, I am going to have to re-do the basement, and probably get a new washer and drier and possibly furnace, not to mention other things that got soaked.

If anyone has any tips, etc. it would be much appreciated.

Ask Where do the lesbians hang out?

I have a good musician friend from Austin that's playing a show in Baltimore. She's asked me to help by hanging up flyers promoting her show. I'm being given 12 nice big flyers to hang up and I want to strategically put them where they will reach the best audience.

She's a queer folk singer-songwriter that plays banjo. The show is at Four Hour Day in Arcadia/Lauraville.

I'm looking for recommendations on where I should hang up these flyers.

Ask New Water Bottle Policy

Post image
• Upvotes

Did any other parents get this, or a similar policy in there school?

I’m not totally sure what to think about it: I get the desire to minimize disruption, but how big are the water bottles? Can they refill them during gym? It sounds like they want them to fill the bottle at the beginning of the day, then not again.

My daughter has an accommodation that will keep her access, but it’ll be just another thing to single her out as different. She’ll already sometimes avoid using accommodations that draw attention to herself.

I wish they had a comment period, or an opportunity to ask questions about it.

Edit: we didn’t get the call as a voicemail so we can’t play it again, but I confirmed that I wasn’t the only one to heard it say that students where only allowed to fill the bottle once. The letter seems more wishy-washy and I’m guessing they’ll walk it back, but at least whoever was on the voice announcement was talking about restricting the amount of water student had.

I don’t necessary think that’s a bad thing all in all, but it seems really sudden and I wish they announced it in an interactive forum so parents could ask more about it.

Ask Blocked Harbor Promenade in Fells Point

• Upvotes

The section of the harbor promenade that goes around the Residences at Henderson's has been blocked off for a year by temporary construction fencing. This means you can't continue walking along the waterfront and have to go around the building. However, the Residences at Henderson's has replaced the construction fencing with permanent cast iron gate and a sign that says it's 'temporarily closed'.

Is this illegal? The promenade is city property, right? If yes, how can I report this? I haven't had any luck with anyone responding to non-emergency 311 requests, so I'm not sure if there is a different flag I can use for this.

Transportation 311 Parking Complaints - Which district do you live in?

Post image
15 Upvotes

This graph shows how long it usually took Baltimore City to close TRS-Parking Complaint 311 requests in each council district.

The districts are listed from fastest to slowest based on the median number of days it took to close a complaint.

The median is the middle number. That means half of the closed complaints were resolved faster than that number, and half took longer.

For example, if five complaints took 2, 3, 5, 8, and 40 days to close, the median would be 5 days. We use the median because a few complaints that take a very long time can make the average look higher than what most people actually experience.

For this comparison, I only counted complaints that were marked Closed and had valid created and closed dates. Complaints that were still open, marked as duplicates, transferred, or had incorrect dates were not included.

The results show a big difference between districts. District 11 had the fastest median resolution time at 3.16 days, while District 5 had the slowest at 29.97 days. The citywide median was about 10.13 days.

This does not tell us why some districts are faster than others, but it does show that parking complaints are not being closed at the same pace across the city.

Ask Advice negotiating a lease on an apartment in Baltimore?

Hello! As the title says, I am looking for advice (or suggestions for who/where else I can ask) on negotiating a lease with a landlord in Baltimore city.

Specifically, some of the terms written under lease termination seem like it would allow the landlord to bypass the normal amount of 30-60 days' notice if he wanted to end the lease, and there is also a rent acceleration clause -- which I haven't seen before. I am hesitant to agree to these things specifically and wondering if other people have seen things like this in a lease, or could help think about how to negotiate taking out terms that we do not want. (To be clear, we are obviously not planning to do anything that would necessitate terminating the lease, but I have experienced some shady things with a separate landlord before, who decided they wanted to end our lease and flip the property, and so I am trying to be extra careful about figuring out what we are agreeing to.)

We found a couple other things that were either vague, or not within the Baltimore city law, which he did seem amenable to changing. But we are just trying to look at the whole thing closely before signing it and would appreciate more advice, whether directly from anyone willing to share their experience here, or pointers on organizations where I can call someone and ask easily, or anything else you think might be helpful.

Thank you!

Moves, Jobs, Meeting People Roomate finding

Advice on finding roommates as a 23 yo Man moving to Baltimore. I’m going to be working in Locust Point. So I’m looking for a place in nearby neighborhoods (Fed Hill, Riverside). I’m into fitness, going out, Baltimore sports, spending time outside, and live music. Don’t have to be best friends with roommates but I’m friendly and wouldn’t mind causal friendship. reasonable budget ~1500 /month. Any advice, leads, or reality checks are welcome. I’m just getting started so just trying to learn!

Ask Who specifically plans the scheduling and timing for Metro and Light Rail?

I saw the announcement for this Saturday about the Baltimore Running Festival. Metro every 20 minutes and light rail every 30 minutes?! That gotta be a joke. It should be at least 15 minutes for both lines to keep the crowds moving. Same for whenever there's a big event at Inner Harbor, Camden Yards and M&T Stadium, the lines aren't moving often enough to handle the large crowds.

Need Recommendations HVAC that works on furnaces and radiant baseboard heating

Anyone have a recommendation of a good HVAC person who can work on my gas furnace and radiant baseboard.

It is in good shape, but I need to get a pressure gauge replaced and air vent valves replaced. And bleed some air out of the baseboards.

I used to have an HVAC company I really liked but they were bought out by a big conglomerate and I was shocked when that tech came out and didn’t know you needed to bleed radiators.
