Editing/Post Processing How are some people getting these super incredibly detailed bird photos?

• Upvotes

I've seen so many photos on Instagram and Reddit of these bird photos that just have so much detail on them you'd think it was shot with a macro lens. I get some solid detail with my photos but I feel it's never at the level of some others. Is it simply getting super close and having the right exposure, or am I missing something important with my photos?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Anybody else just hate digital viewfinders?

I've only recently made the jump to mirrorless cameras and I just cant get along with digital viewfinders at all.

I use an R50 at work which isn't too bad in terms of image quality, it a just feels a bit fake like I'm not actually shooting a scene and just taking screenshots of it on a monitor.

But I recently bought an R7 for personal use and I'm on the verge of sending it back because the viewfinder is just abysmally bad. On the screen the images look fine but when I put my eye to the viewfinder everything looks incredibly dark and distorted regardless of what lenses or settings I use. It's like I'm looking at everything through a dirty goldfish bowl. I've tried adjusting the dial by the eyepiece as a few guides have suggested and it hasn't helped at all, it sharpens the image but the image is still incredibly dark and distorted

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why am I consistently getting such terrible exposure?

I am a long time phone photographer and decided to get a dedicated camera recently. Iv been walking around in the woods taking photos for two days now and getting my ass handed to me by this Z50ii, and I'm not really sure what I am doing wrong.

I feel like Iv got a decent handle on the principles now and Iv been shooting in aperture priority mode with AF-S for the most part. Today I was mostly taking some photos of the trail I was walking on and my dog, the light was filtering through the trees beautifully, lots of sunlit green spots with darker shadows, but no matter what I did to the aperture or where I focused or what I did to the metering it was consistently simultaneously blown out in the bright spots and super dark in the shadows.

I messed with exposure compensation, but that would just either make the dark spots too dark or the bright spots too bright.

The photos at the end which suddenly have color in them are taken with my phone for comparison.

I guess one factor is that these are JPG's from the Nikon vs heavily processed, HDR'd JPGs from the Pixel. I could theoretically take the RAWS and post process them into something that looks better. But I should be able to get a better exposed photo from the start no? Or am I misunderstanding something fundamental?

I recognize this is a very general question, I just really have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Nothing I change on the camera fixes it. The camera isn't magic, but in aperture priority my understanding is I mess with the aperture and the camera controls the shutter speed & ISO to get the correct exposure, but it evidently isn't doing that. Metering, different auto focus settings, exposure compensation don't seem to help either.

Discussion/General NYC Photographer, Anyone Looking for Assistant, Intern, or Second Shooter Opportunities?

I’m a photographer based in NYC looking for opportunities to assist other photographers, intern, or work as a second shooter.

I’m particularly interested in event photography and studio photography, and I want to gain more hands-on experience working alongside experienced photographers. I’m hoping to learn more about lighting setups, studio workflows, client shoots, and how professional photography jobs are run.
I have experience with freelance photography and photographing events, and I’m willing to help with equipment setup, lighting, behind-the-scenes tasks, or other things needed on a shoot.

I’m open to paid opportunities and would also consider a short unpaid learning opportunity if the expectations and educational value are clear.
If you’re a photographer in NYC who needs an assistant or second shooter, or if you have advice on how to get started, I’d love to hear from you!

Gear/Accessories Has anyone switched to super zooms from fast primes? Any regrets?

I got an 18-135mm f3.5/5.6 on my older Pentax system simply to have a weatherproof option. I’ve surprisingly found a it’s what I’m using 90%, I feel I get better compositions that matter more, not having too many issues either zooming in for bokeh at 5.6, or pumping iso/using a tripod. Considering selling a bunch of my fast primes to get a similar but faster AF super zoom for my lumix which is my more up to date camera but I’m terrified of kicking myself after, wondering if anybody else has done this - not to say 24-70 f2.8 or other fast zooms just big focal ranges probably slow apertures. Anybody here done this and want to weigh in? Attached are my 2 fav shots this month this month after a deflating summer shooting just primes

Technical Help/Camera Settings What settings and lighting would you recommend for indoor close-up photography with a Canon EOS 1300D?

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are getting more interested in photography and currently use a Canon EOS 1300D with the standard EF-S 18–55mm lens.

We often take close-up photos indoors in the evening, using only an LED ceiling light. Sometimes the built-in flash fires automatically, but we'd prefer more natural-looking photos without harsh shadows or reflections.

What settings would you recommend for ISO, aperture and shutter speed in these conditions? Would a different lens or an additional light source make a noticeable difference?

We're beginners and would really appreciate any practical advice. Thanks!

Business/Pricing How should I proceed?

Post image
4 Upvotes

So, I am a full time reporter and photographer. I have been a photographer for over a decade, but only on the last year or so have I offered personal services.

An organization that organizes a lot of events in the city reached out to me about taking photos for families for five hours and offering print packages.

I have not offered print packages before, and I also don’t know how I should price my services.

This is huge, because as you probably know.. journalism isn’t the highest paid gig— especially as a small community reporter. So I absolutely want to take this opportunity, but I don’t want to undersell myself.

The community is a rural county but the city is the center of the county and 50% of the entire county population.

Do I charge the organization a fixed rate and then offer the packages as a separate rate? Also who is the best printing company, who do you use?

Discussion/General Is there anyway to clear up this sort of photo?

Post image
• Upvotes

As the title states, I am just trying to figure out if there is a way to clear up a photo like this? I took some photos for my brother and sister in law at their wedding (free of charge) and they looked so go on the camera, but now moving them over to computer to send them and now they look like this. I have tried resizing the photo to see if it was a compression issue but I am not too familiar with touching up photos. Any sort of advice and help is appreciated.

Gear/Accessories What to do with old photography equipment?

Hello,

I apologize if this is not the place for this, but i find it difficult to research this on my own because i lack the basic knowledge.

So here goes,

My father recently died, he was a hobby photographer ranging from the 40s to the 90s. obviously I, as his child, have no clue about the equipment itself, but the fact of the matter is, theres a room with enlargement equipment, a bunch of chemicals, old cameras (like rolliflex and such) leftover lenses, filters, light sensors, different unused films (iso 100-200-400)

Our main question as a family is what can we throw away, what should one keep (aside from what is sentimental to us), because someone might want it or it has some value, if at all.

Ive made around 100 pics of different items, i can probably find a way to host them and share if someone is willing to have a look.

Thank you in advance, and sorry if this is not the place

Discussion/General What's your travel "load out"?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I see debates on here about what is the better camera or lens. But just packing for the next holiday, and it got me wondering: we rarely discuss what we take with us. I bet I could learn a lot from other people's setups. So tell or show us yours!

I take the above lot in my Billingham Hadley Small Pro - quite a compact bag that will fit over the handle of my carry on, but still small enough to use wandering around.

As can be seen, I have an X-T5 with a 16-50mm for the day, and a 23mm f1.4 for evenings. A 3 legged thing "docz" as a tabletop tripod, spare batteries, cloths and a blower, and a set of magnetic filters. All fits in the bag.

Would be interested to see how others do it.

Lens Buying Advice Can I use a digital camera with an analogue lens?

Hi all, I have been using a Nikon D80 for the past year and have really been loving it! Recently, I found some Pentax film cameras (alongside some lenses) for cheap at a thrift store and got them immediately, since I thought it might be fun to try out film photography. However, I also noticed that some of these lenses are pretty good quality, and since I only have one lens for my Nikon, I was wondering if anybody knew if these were compatible.

The lenses are as follows:

Tamron Aspherical 28-200 mm

Tamron AF Macro 1:28 90 mm

SMC Pentax Zoom 1:4 75-100 mm

SMC Pentax-A Zoom 1:3.5 35-105 mm

I understand I'd need an F mount adapter for them, which I'm fine getting, but I want to be sure that it would still work before I spent the money.

Camera Buying Advice Questions to ask seller when buy used camera ?

Hi guys im a beginner looking to buy my first camera. Im not very experienced with cameras yet, so I’m wondering what questions I should ask the seller before buying and what I should check when inspecting the camera in person. How can I tell if a camera is in good condition, and are there any common issues or red flags I should look out for? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion/General How do newer lenses become smaller?

Tamron just came out with a 16-50/2.8 for APSC, which looks to be smaller than m43 12-40/2.8. Is this a case of sacrificing edge/corner performance? Or, is there a manufacturing advancement that allows miniaturization without actually sacrificing performance.

Technical Help/Camera Settings What ads do I set my camera to?

Hi, I just had bought my first film camera, and got a $10 roll of film just to start messing around with how to use it. I have no clue what to set the asa to on the camera itself, the options are 64, 100, just a red box, and 400. I'm assuming ASA means the same as ISO? The film box doesn't explicitly say anything about it and I know very little about cameras lol I'm still learning so if you have any tips I would appreciate them!

Edit: title should've said ASA, mb 🤦‍♀️

Discussion/General How did you know your photography was good enough to start building a portfolio?

I’ve been doing photography for a while and want to start taking it more seriously, possibly even turning it into a side business.

I currently shoot with a Sony A7 IV and edit in Lightroom and Photoshop.

One thing I’ve been struggling with is putting together a portfolio. I keep feeling like my work isn’t quite at the level I want it to be yet.

I’ll edit something, like it initially, and then start noticing things I could’ve done better. Next thing I know, I’m back to editing or convincing myself I need to get better before showing anyone my work.

For those of you who have been through this, how did you decide which photos were worth including in your first portfolio?

Did you just start with what you had and improve it over time? Or did you wait until you had a specific style and quality you were happy with?

Would appreciate hearing how you approached it when you were starting out.

Technical Help/Camera Settings New cameras!! How to work the settings?

New cameras! (Need help with settings)
Hello! I've bought two new cameras
• Canon S5 IS
• Nikon D1000
I bought them both for roughly 175$/€156 (and | got an extra lens for the Nikon) so I am hoping that was a reasonable price, although I am struggling with the settings!
Previously I have had a Sony Cybershot, with it the pictures can turn out warm as well as "crisp"/cold toned and it's pretty easy to control it! Although with both of these new cameras I feel like the pictures look dull and the colours don't really pop, it kinda looks cold and flat. And when I tried taking a picture outside in the dark with one of them it couldn't catch the view and it was a very dark picture.
Does anyone have tips and tricks on how to learn to adjust settings and use these cameras to their fullest potential? I'm willing to hear all tips that everyone has and how to use them properly!! I know some cameras simply take warmer/colder toned pictures than others so I don't know how much I can do but I thought surely there are more knowledgable people on here😊

Gear/Accessories What's everyone's go to SD Cards?

Some super nerdy topics but an important one -

What's everyone's go to cards?

I've always been a fan of the Lexar Professional Silver series
Great bang for your buck (used to be) cards that have always been reliable.
