Announcement New rules regarding business and software development discussions

First up, business discussions.

We've heard you. There's too much business talk here. This isn't a small business subreddit, it's meant to discuss the culture of photography, and the constant "how do I start making money" or "my photographer ghosted me" has diluted that discussion.

So, to find some sort of middle ground, we've created a weekly business thread where those sorts of questions can be asked and answered. Each Wednesday, a new recurring thread called "Business Wednesday" will go live. We will be diverting any posts to there. If you see any on the front page, please feel free to report them so we can help guide the OP to the appropriate place.

And now, the software dev posts.

We have never allowed promotional posts on this sub. It's not what it's for, and we take a strict stance on it. We did, however, allow people to share their photography-related dev projects in the Self-Promotion Sunday thread.

Well, that's no more. That thread was meant to be a place where photographers could share things like photos they're proud of, galleries they've participated in, new publications, really just things us photographers get excited by and are proud of. Unfortunately, that thread has become completely overrun with devs promoting their products. I think we can all agree that we're sick of seeing vibecoded "the ultimate culling tool" and "the Adobe killer". It's exhausting. It's not what Reddit is for. It's certainly not what this sub is for.

So from now on any form of advertising or self-promotion outside of showcasing photos or projects in the appropriate thread is prohibited. Any web-development projects or apps are prohibited as they do not relate to the practice of photography.

We have also canceled the Self Promotion Sunday thread and instead are instituting Success Sunday, a space for photographers to share their photography successes.

If you see any software promotion of any kind anywhere on this sub, please report it.

tl;dr:

We have new community days, accompanying our existing ones:

  • Business Wednesday: Ask your business-related questions
  • Follow Friday: Share your socials
  • Salty Saturday: Get all your rants out
  • Success Sunday: Share your photography successes

Absolutely no software promotion allowed. Anywhere. Zero tolerance here on out.

kthnxbye!

Business Leaving Adobe

Looking to end my time with Adobe for many reasons, tried to cancel today but they tell me I would need to pay them £100ish in order to cancel the subscription. anyone else found this issue and, if so, what did you do to get past it, other than paying the money?

Gear How are you backing up your photos in this economy?

Title is mostly sarcasm, but went to purchase another 2TB SSD and the prices have more than doubled. Thanks a lot, AI.

What's the move? I don't love the dropbox subscription model that I will have to pay until I die.

Technique Can I use Photographic Paper if I don’t own a film camera or have any experience?

I found a full box of photographic paper in a dumpster outside a house in my neighborhood, I believe they were clearing out from a previous tenant. Is there anything I can do with it without having to buy anything else? I’m thinking like a pinhole camera but I’d have no idea where to start.

I have 100 sheets of 8x10 inch glossy photographic paper, when I open the box the sheets are in a black opaque bag that I’m afraid to open. But I really didn’t want them to end up in a landfill if they were somehow useful. They are Ilford brand “MGIV Multigrade IV RC Deluxe” if that means anything. The price sticker says they sold for $90 so I really don’t want that going to waste.

Thanks for any help or guidance, and forgive any apparent ignorance, I have no idea what I’m talking about :)

Art Starting documentary project - how to approach subject

• Upvotes

Hi,

I'd like to start taking photography more seriously. I'm interested in photographing people, and I have a few ideas for long-term photography projects. However, whenever I email someone to explain an idea, I never seem to get a response.

I've tried reaching out to individuals and local institutions. I'm not asking for funding; I even make it clear that I'm willing to cover all the expenses myself. I'm simply trying to make contact and get a conversation started, but I still don't receive any replies.

A couple of hours ago, I came across a project in which a photographer took portraits of people getting out of a swimming pool. It made me wonder how projects like this actually come together. How do you get permission to enter a swimming pool with a camera? Do you approach people as they get out of the water and ask, “Hey, can I take your photo?” Or is there a different process for arranging this kind of shoot?

Art Combining video into a single picture?

• Upvotes

Hey Y'all. I'm an experimental musician with an idea for a cover photo. Recently I've been dealing with various physical and mental health stresses due to my working schedule (damn swing shift), so my own body has kinda been my enemy lately. In order to portray this, I was thinking of recording myself standing in front of a blank wall, with slight variations in my position. Then I wanted to combine every frame into one singular image, to make my body look very distorted. I dont know much about photography or editing so any advice would be extremely helpful!

Business Sony and Capture One are having conflicts?

I saw a post about the conflict between Sony and Capture One because of Capture One Express version for Sony and maybe that's the reason why Sony is NOT supporting their Compressed RAW formats to Capture One since A7V. I have no clues but

Tho Loseless compressed RAW is supported but Compressed RAW and Compressed HQ RAW are Sony's new proprietary format which requires Sony's support but since they are refusing that, Capture One can not support compressed RAW on their software. Reverse Engineering will not work due to the technical difficulties and legal issues.

Most importantly, there was a lawsuit between Sony users and Sony + Capture One from last year before A7V released. The case number is 3:25-cv-02305-WQH-SBC, Rodriguez v. Sony Electronics Inc***.*** Interestingly, they blamed each other in order to avoid legal responsibilities. Tho the case is closed, I dont think their relationship is as same as before.

Since then, A7V and A7R6 STILL didnt get support Compressed RAW on Capture One while RX10 V doesnt even support Capture One itself!!! It's almost one year since a new Compressed RAW came out so this is a serious problem after all. Capture One already answered this from their own forum that it has nothing to do with Compressed RAW support but to my eyes, they do especially since RX10 V doesn't even support Capture One even if it has uncompressed and loseless compressed options. It could be a serious problem for all future Sony cameras as long as Sony doesn't want their cameras supported on Capture One.

At this point, all Sony users are forced to use loseless compressed RAW on Capture One or use Adobe cause so far, they are the only one supporting Sony's new Compressed RAW formats. Since there are and were conflicts between Sony and Capture One, maybe that's the main reason why Sony is still refusing to support their Compressed RAW on Capture One? Because otherwise, it does NOT make any senses as no Sony's new Compressed RAW ever supported on Capture One for almost one year already. Maybe someone need to stand up and spread the world to resolve their conflicts.

Do you think Sony will stop supporting Capture One?

Post Processing Ai in Adobe

So I'm a photographer and shoot alot of events where sometimes, the lighting is either very minimal or just poor.

I would like to say that I don't support AI, specifically generative AI pictures or videos.

I feel that some AI software can be great for people with accessibility needs, but don't like how much people are abusing it in this modern day.

That being said, I cannot stop others from using AI, I won't shame them either. I just don't like to take part in it myself.

However.

Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite as I use the Denoise function on Adobe lightroom.

It's the only AI feature I use and it genuinely helps me so much, especially in the low light instances I mentioned above.

I just wanted to see if anyone here knew more on the AI Denoise function.

In my brain I feel like it isn't as harmful as generative AI, but I'd like to know more.

Thanks

Post Processing Storage situation advice re physical/cloud storage solutions

Hi all, I've done a lot of research and am still unsure about what direction to take for my data backup system and was wondering if you had any word of wisdom based on your diverse experiences.

I'm a beginner amateur photographer. I've been accumulating a many more photos over the last year since practicing more frequently and consistently. At the moment I'm actually trying to consolidate all my photos from over the years (from phones, previous cameras) and securely back them up with a 3-2-1 system.

After gathering all my photos I've reached over 1T. It's going to grow faster as I'm getting more into photography, though I don't plan on becoming that serious.

I don't own an SSD yet, but I really think I need at least one. But oh my it is expensive. Currently, all my photos are in:

  1. Two HDDs (1T + an older 300GB one), one from which I edit, but need to switch to SSD.

    1. Lightroom Cloud : I have a subscription to Adobe Creative through my work that I'm using as a back up for now but need to find a personal cloud solution.

I also have access to a Google Workspace Business Standard subscription (this is my own personal one), and an Amazon Prime subscription, which I could use for storage.

Ive also looked into NAS, Blackblaze as physical/ cloud options, but it's a bit overwhelming and I don't know if it's worth the investment for my situation.

Considering that I only have 1T at this stage and don't see myself becoming that serious with photography, would it be a good option to get one SSD + one other HDD, and back up everything to my Amazon and/or Google Workspace? Or should I be future proof and get a NAS and other more secured cloud solutions?

Technique Tips: Haunted House

I was recently asked to do photography for a haunted house (free work, all volunteer run for a good cause, I'm friends with a few of the long term volunteers. Happy to do what I can and expand my skills). It is a nice haunted house, plus some outdoor entertainment, haystack rides, etc. Everything is done after dark, and inside has varied lighting but dim. I will be shooting while it is going on. My other photography has always been outdoor sport photography during the day, so I'm really worried about lighting. If I use flash, I think i will mess up thr ambiance for the visitors and blind the actors. Any ideas/tips?

I'm also a huge chicken of haunted houses myself so I'm worried about accidently getting scared myself, but i dont know if anyone can help with that 😅 I'm hoping focusing on the pictures will be enough of a distraction. I have volunteered as an actor at a haunted house before, but its not scary when you are the one jumping out at people.

Technique How do I get better?

I've been shooting digital for a few years, definitely not consistently, more so at special events or if I had nothing else to do, but I do think I've gotten quite a few great pictures per total. My boyfriend recently introduced me to film photography. I never got the thrill until now, and I'm trying to pursue it as a hobby. I've shot 2 rolls on a Cosina CT-1, a Kodak gold 200, I believe, and kentmere 200ISO. I think that the pictures on my first roll came out alright for my first time, but it's really humbling seeing other people's "beginner" photography. The b&w roll came out terrible, but that could've also been a developing error since we do it at home.

My main problem is that I understand that I need to actually study photography and essentially just practice A LOT, but I live in a smaller town and can't really go out that much if I'm at home since I have a lot of schoolwork most of the time. What I can do is go out to our nearest city on the weekend, and even then, my schedule is very strict.

So my question is: how do I practice and get better at photography with this little options?

Edit 1: I really appreciate the advice on whether I should shoot on film or digital, but what I want to get from this post is tips on how I can get more experience with my limited options.

Edit 2: If it helps with anything, I've used a Canon 60D my whole life for digital

Technique Camera alignment when shooting large painting on easel?

4x8ft painting. Got the lighting worked out. But getting the camera aligned -perfectly parallel- with the painting on an easel -and therefore slightly tilted backward is not working. Tried the mirror trick using a small mirror taped(!) onto the painting at the very middle. Didn’t work because given i am about 10-12 feet away from the painting nearly impossible to even see the lens in the small mirror. Plus the painting surface is not even, so….even a slight unevenness can throw the alignment off by an enormous degree.

So far have some (near)perfectly lit shots that are sharp in one area of the painting but unsharp in rest of painting.

- Using D850 with Micro Nikkor 55mm AID which is a manual focus lens made for copywork. f8 1/250th iso 64 with two strobes.

-Tethered to 13in MBAir for Capture in Lightroom Classic. ***Limitation: Liveview on D850 does not work with tethering so have to untether to focus and then retether to capture.

Note: hanging painting on wall is not an option in this space. Neither is photographing the painting outdoors.

Technique Favorite photography YouTube channels that aren’t about gear?

It seems like 90% of photography channels sent my way by the algorithm are about gear and gear reviews. I’ve got two great cameras I bought 6 years ago, have the lenses I need. And will never upgrade anything unless something catastrophic happens and thats that.

What are your favorite channels that spend MOST of the time covering photography adventure, landscape techniques, street, share unique ideas about compositing, how to keep things fun and interesting etc… hell they could be using an iPhone for all I care. Just no more content about gadgets please.

Post Processing Shutterfly Reliability

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this but I’ve used Shutterfly for years and in the last few months I’ve noticed they’re incredibly unreliable. Is anyone else having this issue?

Even something simple as printing pictures has been such a hassle. They actually lost my last order and never said anything until I brought it up weeks after it was supposed to be delivered.

Business Lessons from my worst senior portrait shoot ever

I'm posting this story mostly to share the red flags I should've listened to and to get a little schadenfreude from all of you. Also, if you've experienced something similar, it would be nice to know I'm not alone 😅

Basically, I shot a college senior last week, and it was the worst photoshoot experience ever. The kid (man? young adult? 20-something graduating college student) did not want to be there; he hated the experience before it even started. He fought with his mom the whole time, pouted, threw a fit, and made no effort to participate in creating photos.

Red flags I should've picked up on:

  • His mom hired me a few months ago, and scheduling was difficult. Turns out it was the kid pushing it off and being busy.
  • She kept dropping hints that she was forcing him to do it, that we'd be lucky if he showered (after sending over my prep guide), and when I met her at the school, she said she stopped by his apartment to wake him up on the way
  • She casually mentioned he would be difficult, but it was always said with a smile or a laugh. I'm thinking like how my stepdad didn't like his picture taken, but he'd cooperate for official family photos

So he arrives, and he's already sulking and sullen. She makes him put on his cap and gown, and it's a struggle, like dressing a toddler. I ask him to take his AirPods out, and he smashes them into the AirPods case so I'm already like "this is going to suck."

I try to level with him and find out what's bothering him; he says photos are manufactured, and college is a scam (a good thing for a kid to say when their parent has paid for everything). He says the only thing that makes him happy is his truck. I took a few photos of him standing in his cap and gown looking pissed. His mom comes over for a picture together; he gives a shitty look.

We try to do some truck pictures, and he barely engages.

We did one more with him reading a comic book on a bench, and he just looks like he hates the world. Finally, we call it off 20 minutes into the shoot, and he storms off and burns rubber out of the parking lot.

The tough spot is that if it were just the two of us, I probably would've tried to work with him to get something, lean into the attitude, or sit down and have a philosophical conversation about the nature of photography and his future, which may or may not have worked. But I also felt pressured by his mom to get something, and so did he. I considered telling them this was a bad idea and giving a refund, but they both wasted my time.

I'll try to make something of the photos; I might do a duplicate set that's super moody and over the top, plus a normal set.

In the future, I think the lesson is to listen to those red flags and deny the work altogether, because anyone forced to take photos isn't going to have a good time.

Has anyone ever been in this situation with an angry subject? What did you do?

Technique Working with kids

I’m mainly an equine and senior photographer, so I don’t get many opportunities to photograph families! I have a family session coming up and would love some advice on working with their kids. I know kids can be unpredictable, but I’d appreciate any specific tips beyond just “go with the flow” 😅 I’m not around kids very often, so any advice on how to keep them engaged, get genuine smiles, or handle it when things don’t go as planned would be super helpful! The kids are 2 years old and 10 months old.

Technique Help Building Pinhole Camera

Hello,

I'm trying to build a pinhole camera that is easy to operate with my 4 year old. He really likes taking photos. We have a kids digital camera, and one that prints using heat paper (all black and white). I thought he would enjoy making one as a project

Does anyone have experience building one? I'm not sure how small a box i can get. I'm going to take a trip to Office Depot and UPS. But my main question is does the film width/height impact the F-Stop?

Basically I will have f-length probably something like 4-8 inches depending what is available and then the diameter of a pin. However, there might be a lot of empty space along the back wall where the film medium is. I'm going to run a regular film cartridge through on each end so I can do the trick where one film cartridge can roll the each other in and out.

So my question is if a 4-8 inch deep camera is too large, along with the back wall being much larger than the film frame is a problem?
