Technical Help/Camera Settings Why am I consistently getting such terrible exposure?

I am a long time phone photographer and decided to get a dedicated camera recently. Iv been walking around in the woods taking photos for two days now and getting my ass handed to me by this Z50ii, and I'm not really sure what I am doing wrong.

I feel like Iv got a decent handle on the principles now and Iv been shooting in aperture priority mode with AF-S for the most part. Today I was mostly taking some photos of the trail I was walking on and my dog, the light was filtering through the trees beautifully, lots of sunlit green spots with darker shadows, but no matter what I did to the aperture or where I focused or what I did to the metering it was consistently simultaneously blown out in the bright spots and super dark in the shadows.

I messed with exposure compensation, but that would just either make the dark spots too dark or the bright spots too bright.

The photos at the end which suddenly have color in them are taken with my phone for comparison.

I guess one factor is that these are JPG's from the Nikon vs heavily processed, HDR'd JPGs from the Pixel. I could theoretically take the RAWS and post process them into something that looks better. But I should be able to get a better exposed photo from the start no? Or am I misunderstanding something fundamental?

I recognize this is a very general question, I just really have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Nothing I change on the camera fixes it. The camera isn't magic, but in aperture priority my understanding is I mess with the aperture and the camera controls the shutter speed & ISO to get the correct exposure, but it evidently isn't doing that. Metering, different auto focus settings, exposure compensation don't seem to help either.

Editing/Post Processing How are some people getting these super incredibly detailed bird photos?

I've seen so many photos on Instagram and Reddit of these bird photos that just have so much detail on them you'd think it was shot with a macro lens. I get some solid detail with my photos but I feel it's never at the level of some others. Is it simply getting super close and having the right exposure, or am I missing something important with my photos?

Business/Pricing Where to take my lenses for repairs?

Hey all,

I live in Missouri and have two lenses that could use some TLC. The first is a Sigma 170-500mm A mount lens. The manual focus does not work, but the auto focus works just fine. I've been using it with an LAEA4 adapter on my Sony A6500. The second lens is a Sony 55-210mm lens which has fungus on the lens, and whoever owned it before me tried to open it up. The right on the front of the lens with all of the information was removed and poorly put back on, breaking in the process.

While I was in Milwaukee, I asked around about repairs to the Sigma, but nobody had any idea as to who could work on that lens. Sigma won't touch it either since it's so old. I don't know what would be required to detox and repair the Sony lens. Google has been less than helpful in my searches, so if anyone knows of a shop in the state of Missouri that would be willing to work on these lenses, I would greatly appreciate it.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Anybody else just hate digital viewfinders?

I've only recently made the jump to mirrorless cameras and I just cant get along with digital viewfinders at all.

I use an R50 at work which isn't too bad in terms of image quality, it a just feels a bit fake like I'm not actually shooting a scene and just taking screenshots of it on a monitor.

But I recently bought an R7 for personal use and I'm on the verge of sending it back because the viewfinder is just abysmally bad. On the screen the images look fine but when I put my eye to the viewfinder everything looks incredibly dark and distorted regardless of what lenses or settings I use. It's like I'm looking at everything through a dirty goldfish bowl. I've tried adjusting the dial by the eyepiece as a few guides have suggested and it hasn't helped at all, it sharpens the image but the image is still incredibly dark and distorted

Editing/Post Processing Best monitor for editing?

Hello all. You may remember me from a few days ago asking what the best computer for editing is. I’ve decided to go with an M6 MacMini! A smidge over budget but overall I feel best bang for my buck. However I now pose another question - what monitor should I buy???

Ideally under $250, and I don’t want to have to buy from Amazon (our boxes are usually ok but every so often we get a beat up one, I don’t want to risk that lol). I’ve seen some gaming monitors that offer 130% sRGB, color calibration, and something about 16bit color space (???). I am not super computer language literate lol. What sort of specs should I be looking for and asking about when I go to buy one? Or just tell me which one should I pick up lol

Also, dumb question, but could I just use my Roku tv? 😂😭 And what’s the census on curved monitors? Idk how I feel about them. thanks yall!!

Lens Buying Advice How is the Nikkor AF-S 18-105mm 3.5-5.6G lens?

• Upvotes

While scrolling on FB Marketplace, I saw a cheap 18-105mm lens that has a slight fungus. I am waiting for the seller to send sample shots to check if the fungus is noticeable on images or at a certain focal length. What I actually wanted is a Nikkor 18-135mm lens but I don't find any in FB Marketplace, at least, close to the city I live. I did saw one at a online shop (like Aliexpress but for SEA) but it is above my budget and I haven't done any validity check on the store yet.

I'll replace my 18-55mm AF-S lens that came with my Nikon D3000 and then clean the fungus in the future. But if, say, my only options are 18-105mm AF-S lens but has no fungus, would it be a great budget lens or should I really look for 18-135mm lens?

Business/Pricing How do I sell to the right buyers?

• Upvotes

I’ve been an avid photographer since I was a kid when my uncle would hand me his DSLR during family gatherings. I took a photography class in middle school at a local college over the summer and have had my own camera in my hand since. It’s always been a hobby though have done some gig work, but am looking at ways I can sell some of my best shots. Talked to someone recently that offered a “course” that is about 20$ and gives a bunch of information on how to sell prints on Etsy, haven’t gotten the course yet but seems like it could be valuable information, because at the very least they offer discount codes through the major print services for canvases, metal prints etc.

Question is, how many of you have sold on places like Etsy, or are there alternatives that you have found more success with? Not looking to make this my full time job just yet as I’m in my late 20s and recently pivoted careers into sales, but would love to ramp up the selling of my work as a side hustle. I particularly enjoy landscapes, urban architecture, as well as portraits. I’ve also done a ton of automotive work as it was my previous industry for the past 8 years.

When it comes to work that sells well, I assume that iconic landmarks or landscapes, or even well known automobiles, would be the type of art a potential buyer may have a personal connection to it, rather than just a good looking photo. Would I be correct in that statement?

Discussion/General NYC Photographer, Anyone Looking for Assistant, Intern, or Second Shooter Opportunities?

I’m a photographer based in NYC looking for opportunities to assist other photographers, intern, or work as a second shooter.

I’m particularly interested in event photography and studio photography, and I want to gain more hands-on experience working alongside experienced photographers. I’m hoping to learn more about lighting setups, studio workflows, client shoots, and how professional photography jobs are run.
I have experience with freelance photography and photographing events, and I’m willing to help with equipment setup, lighting, behind-the-scenes tasks, or other things needed on a shoot.

I’m open to paid opportunities and would also consider a short unpaid learning opportunity if the expectations and educational value are clear.
If you’re a photographer in NYC who needs an assistant or second shooter, or if you have advice on how to get started, I’d love to hear from you!

Gear/Accessories Has anyone switched to super zooms from fast primes? Any regrets?

I got an 18-135mm f3.5/5.6 on my older Pentax system simply to have a weatherproof option. I’ve surprisingly found a it’s what I’m using 90%, I feel I get better compositions that matter more, not having too many issues either zooming in for bokeh at 5.6, or pumping iso/using a tripod. Considering selling a bunch of my fast primes to get a similar but faster AF super zoom for my lumix which is my more up to date camera but I’m terrified of kicking myself after, wondering if anybody else has done this - not to say 24-70 f2.8 or other fast zooms just big focal ranges probably slow apertures. Anybody here done this and want to weigh in? Attached are my 2 fav shots this month this month after a deflating summer shooting just primes

Discussion/General What's your travel "load out"?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I see debates on here about what is the better camera or lens. But just packing for the next holiday, and it got me wondering: we rarely discuss what we take with us. I bet I could learn a lot from other people's setups. So tell or show us yours!

I take the above lot in my Billingham Hadley Small Pro - quite a compact bag that will fit over the handle of my carry on, but still small enough to use wandering around.

As can be seen, I have an X-T5 with a 16-50mm for the day, and a 23mm f1.4 for evenings. A 3 legged thing "docz" as a tabletop tripod, spare batteries, cloths and a blower, and a set of magnetic filters. All fits in the bag.

Would be interested to see how others do it.

Camera Buying Advice Are any of these with snagging?

Just starting off. I'd like something for quick shots while I'm out and about. The ones in the pictures were from an antique shop going for $20-$50. But I question if they actual work. The ones on the paper were at a pawnshop (I couldn't take picture inside).

country: USA

Budget: up to 150

I currently have essentially a reusable Kodak disposal camera

Mainly quick shots. Something that can handle low light.

Technical Help/Camera Settings What settings and lighting would you recommend for indoor close-up photography with a Canon EOS 1300D?

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are getting more interested in photography and currently use a Canon EOS 1300D with the standard EF-S 18–55mm lens.

We often take close-up photos indoors in the evening, using only an LED ceiling light. Sometimes the built-in flash fires automatically, but we'd prefer more natural-looking photos without harsh shadows or reflections.

What settings would you recommend for ISO, aperture and shutter speed in these conditions? Would a different lens or an additional light source make a noticeable difference?

We're beginners and would really appreciate any practical advice. Thanks!

Gear/Accessories What to do with old photography equipment?

Hello,

I apologize if this is not the place for this, but i find it difficult to research this on my own because i lack the basic knowledge.

So here goes,

My father recently died, he was a hobby photographer ranging from the 40s to the 90s. obviously I, as his child, have no clue about the equipment itself, but the fact of the matter is, theres a room with enlargement equipment, a bunch of chemicals, old cameras (like rolliflex and such) leftover lenses, filters, light sensors, different unused films (iso 100-200-400)

Our main question as a family is what can we throw away, what should one keep (aside from what is sentimental to us), because someone might want it or it has some value, if at all.

Ive made around 100 pics of different items, i can probably find a way to host them and share if someone is willing to have a look.

Thank you in advance, and sorry if this is not the place

Business/Pricing How should I proceed?

Post image
5 Upvotes

So, I am a full time reporter and photographer. I have been a photographer for over a decade, but only on the last year or so have I offered personal services.

An organization that organizes a lot of events in the city reached out to me about taking photos for families for five hours and offering print packages.

I have not offered print packages before, and I also don’t know how I should price my services.

This is huge, because as you probably know.. journalism isn’t the highest paid gig— especially as a small community reporter. So I absolutely want to take this opportunity, but I don’t want to undersell myself.

The community is a rural county but the city is the center of the county and 50% of the entire county population.

Do I charge the organization a fixed rate and then offer the packages as a separate rate? Also who is the best printing company, who do you use?

Discussion/General Is there anyway to clear up this sort of photo?

Post image
0 Upvotes

As the title states, I am just trying to figure out if there is a way to clear up a photo like this? I took some photos for my brother and sister in law at their wedding (free of charge) and they looked so go on the camera, but now moving them over to computer to send them and now they look like this. I have tried resizing the photo to see if it was a compression issue but I am not too familiar with touching up photos. Any sort of advice and help is appreciated.

Camera Buying Advice What camera and lens should I get for miniature photography?

I've been using a Sony a5100 for the past 5 years of my career as a miniature painter and it was a very solid piece. The image quality was always better than any phone and I really tweaked it to my liking over the years. Saddly it recently died, so I'm looking to get a new one.

I mainly shoot miniature models (about 32cm tall) against a black background. Good video would be nice well, but it's not a necessity.

A Sony a6100 would be the easiest pick but I'd like to hear some options. I'm curious to everyone's

(1) Budget, country, and currency: 450-650 EUR, Belgium

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I had a sony a5100 but it died.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Miniature models (about 32mm tall)

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Primarily photography, but videography would be a nice bonus.

Discussion/General What should i do?

I’m going on a trip to Vancouver next week for 8 days (I know, very short). I had a Canon Rebel T5i and a Canon 6D Mark II, but I sold them, and now I wanna take photos on my trip.

I was thinking, what if I spend $1,700 CAD on Amazon and get a Canon R50, a 50mm lens, and a 75–300mm lens, use them on my trip, and return them within 30 days? But Amazon could also decline the return since the equipment would have been used.

I could also buy second-hand cameras with a budget of $1,500 CAD. But the thing is, I have no savings, and I’d be using my credit card and then paying it off. I’m 19, my monthly income isn’t that much, and I don’t know what to do.

I wanna take photos and videos so bad, but I’m confused. Renting also costs $1,500+ CAD.

I live in Canada. What should I do?

Lens Buying Advice Can I use a digital camera with an analogue lens?

Hi all, I have been using a Nikon D80 for the past year and have really been loving it! Recently, I found some Pentax film cameras (alongside some lenses) for cheap at a thrift store and got them immediately, since I thought it might be fun to try out film photography. However, I also noticed that some of these lenses are pretty good quality, and since I only have one lens for my Nikon, I was wondering if anybody knew if these were compatible.

The lenses are as follows:

Tamron Aspherical 28-200 mm

Tamron AF Macro 1:28 90 mm

SMC Pentax Zoom 1:4 75-100 mm

SMC Pentax-A Zoom 1:3.5 35-105 mm

I understand I'd need an F mount adapter for them, which I'm fine getting, but I want to be sure that it would still work before I spent the money.

Editing/Post Processing How to achieve this sort of style?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

All pictures are from @josue.vizuals_ on Instagram

Can I get some help replicating this style? Like what editing techniques do you guys think are being used, or certain settings or something? Obviously all 6 pictures differ in certain ways and aren’t exactly the same, but I think they all have a distinct style. Specifically the contrast and color, which are two of the things I’m finding the hardest to match. My current best guess is a lot of gradients but I can’t seem to find it. The skin tones seem to have an interesting style, and so do the backgrounds/sun in some of the images. The detail in the pictures is also pretty impressive, and mine don’t seem to capture that without looking like they have too much clarity. I’m relatively new to photography (about 6 months on and off, just for fun not getting paid or anything) and I’m still trying to find styles that I like. Obviously I don’t want to just rip his style off him, I just want to figure out how to replicate it so I can progress further and find my style.

Any advice (or other tips) helps, thanks
