I've read the FAQ & Rules How do I find actors for a shoot in less than a week?

So as actors, what attracts you to do student films with a little less than one week preparation (it's a three page script).

I got a fake email after making an ill-advised joke (understandable).

You think I could use backstage for my actors?

I don't think trying the university actors would work because I already tried that and Some don't get me, while some are just genuinely busy.

I tried to email other universities nearby but no response.

In this town, I got some friends mainly aquaintances and they don't wanna act.

It's looking I might have to pay for actors but I don't know hows that going to work?

I've read the FAQ & Rules How can a complete beginner get an audition for American Horror Story?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm interested in pursuing acting, and one of my long-term goals is to audition for American Horror Story.

I'm a complete beginner with no professional acting experience or credits yet. I'm also currently living outside the United States, so I'm trying to understand what the realistic path into the American film and television industry would look like for someone in my position.

I'd love to hear from actors, casting professionals, or anyone familiar with the industry.

A few questions:

- How would you recommend getting started if you have absolutely no acting credits?

- Where can beginners find legitimate casting calls for TV shows like American Horror Story?

- Do productions like this ever audition complete newcomers, or do they generally cast actors with professional representation and experience?

- Would I need a talent agent or manager to have a realistic chance of getting an audition?

- How important are acting classes, a showreel, and credits from independent films?

- Since I'm currently outside the US, what should I know about work authorization and the practical steps required to pursue acting opportunities there?

I'm not expecting to land a role immediately. I want to understand the actual process and what I should work toward first.

If you've been through something similar, I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I've read the FAQ & Rules Asking not to be considered for roles

At auditions, there's a box to specify what roles you want to be considered for on the intake form. Rarely is there a box for roles you don't want. But is it unprofessional to say you want to be seen for all EXCEPT a certain role?

There is a character in this play that is described to be of someone going through a "mid-life crisis" and will be going through a mental breakdown which includes crying, screeching, attempting daredevil stunts (gymnastics, fight choreo, and tumbling skills preferred) multiple costume changes, interacting with audience, trying different stimulants onstage etc. I don't want to do all of that. I have martial arts training but all of this running around this character seems to be doing, I don't want to do. But I feel like if they see my skills section they'll consider me anyway.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Any LA based actors work as a local in NY this year ?

Just curious if anyone here based in LA has booked jobs in NY and worked as a local in NY. Only ask cause I've been getting a lot of auditions for projects shooting in New York this year.

If you have worked as a local in NY, did you crash with friends or just got an air bnb ?

I've also noticed this year many auditions are NY and LA auditions are more rare.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Auditioned for a feature film almost 2 weeks ago — should I still expect a callback?

I auditioned for a feature film on October 6 and haven't heard anything back from my agent about a callback or any updates.

The film is scheduled to shoot sometime between November and December, with the first shooting date listed as November 2.

I'm wondering if I should still expect a potential callback at this point or if it's more likely they've moved on with other actors.

I'd rather not name the project for privacy reasons, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation.

For those who've auditioned for feature films, how long did it typically take to hear back about a callback, especially when filming was only a few weeks away? Is no news usually bad news, or could I still be in consideration?

I've read the FAQ & Rules joining the union as a bg actor

I only started background acting in february of this year. I got lucky and have received 4 vouchers during this time. This activated my ok30 during which I worked 8 sag jobs. I have talked to so many people and I am really conflicted about joining. The money I earned from the ok30 period would cover the initiation fees. I have heard many people not regret their decision to join because the pay and benefits are simply that much better. I don’t want to be overly optimistic and assume every month I’ll be able to book 8+ sag jobs. And I would like more experience since I am so new to this. I did book another sag job but now I am wondering if i should cancel it because It would mean I would have to join before going on set. I am still very new to this so I would appreciate any advice you have!

I've read the FAQ & Rules Fourth wing

Hey guys!

I’ve seen that they’ve already cast Xaden and Violet for the adaptation, do we know something about the other characters?

I was hopping that there would be an open casting call for the other characters as well, but I haven’t seen anything and since they already have the leads i supposed that they should be already closing on the other ones, right?

I've read the FAQ & Rules TO agencies honest thoughts

Seeking a new agent with stronger connections and more push as my career has grown. I know things are shifting, and I want some honest thoughts and opinions on your agent/things you’ve heard.

My big goal was Characters (unsuccessful) and am hearing good things from people about their agents but not specifically on the things I’m looking for.

Anyways, would love to hear opinions, good bad and mediocre if you have any. TAMAC only :)

I've read the FAQ & Rules Do all actors hate watching themselves?

I'm an amateur actor and sometimes get gigs in local tv shows. I just watched an episode i filmed early this year and oh my God, i can't stand looking at myself. Everything from my movement to my line delivery just feels wrong and awkward. My voice feels so raspy and try-hard like i'm doing a bad Kingpin impression. The director wasn't complaining when we were filming. My friends also say that i'm acting fine. But whenever i'm watching it my performance looks genuenly awful. Is this something all actors feel when watching themselves? Or is my gut telling me the truth? Maybe i'm just too demanding of myself. I'm an amateur playing in low quality slop but i expect a Marlon Brando level performance from myself

I've read the FAQ & Rules Has the holiday slump already begun?

SAG Actor in LA, I got kind of lucky and had tons of auditons and two bookings this year, but it has died down considerably. I had a feeling this would happen, but fall is usually busy for me, auditon wise. Are we already in the holiday slump? it feels deader than usual, I will say summer was pretty dead.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Fourth Wing Updates

So Violet and Xaden have officially been cast. Does anyone know if they’ve started casting for other series regulars, recurring, or guest stars? The series now isn’t going to start filming until March (according to production weekly) so they have a lot of time still.

I've read the FAQ & Rules Best wfh day jobs to support your acting career?

My goal of being of a working actor has never left, but my god, debt and inflation are kicking my ass, and I am looking into going back to school for a higher paying career that I could do remote or hybrid, even if it’s not at the start, to support myself as an actor. Right now I just have a BA in theatre but am looking into finance or risk assessment jobs. I don’t want to do bartending, I need something that pays better and provides good healthcare. I know a lot of people go into tech and software but there have been so many layoffs of late that I’m hesitant to do that, especially if I’m going to be starting said career after a year or more of school/training. What have you found works for you?

I've read the FAQ & Rules Adding subtitles in self-tape for foreign language dialogue in audition?

Hey everyone,

Title is pretty self-explanatory. I've been asked to audition for a role in an American network TV show that requires fluency in a foreign language (Arabic in my case). The scene I'm auditioning for is written in English on the script (but the directions say the characters speak Arabic). Translation was provided but it was clearly a Google Translate effort because there were errors in the translation and it was written in a formal pan-Arab dialect that is only used by news broadcasters (or textbooks). They didn't specify which dialect of Arabic to perform, so my reader and I both did the scene in Egyptian Arabic.

I would assume casting has someone on their end to vet the actors and make sure they speak that language authentically, but I'm having doubts since they didn't put a lot of effort into translating the sides. And also, not everyone speaks the same dialect of Arabic, so they may end up getting a consultant who speaks Iraqi Arabic or Moroccan Arabic, and they might perceive my Arabic as not authentic to theirs. Kinda like how Chilean Spanish or Rioplatense Spanish diverges a lot from common Spanish.

Should I still do my due diligence and add subtitles to the Arabic dialogue in my self-tape? Just so they can match my spoken foreign dialogue to the lines on the script?

FWIW, my reader and I both performed the scene in Arabic, so there's a whole minute of conversation that would alienate anyone watching who doesn't speak or know the language.
